Schooled
Four stars
Schooled 4.0 is a collection of four books following the lives of Janelle, a high school English teacher, and her friends and family. The first two books are about Janelle herself, the third book, Char Grilled Jasper features her brother and best friend, and All Girls School is about a former student.
The first book begins with Janelle walking in on her husband in bed with his secretary. Instead of confronting him on the spot, she leaves, heading to the local bar in order to drown her sorrows in alcohol. It is there that she meets up with hottie, and former student, Briggs. Over the course of an alcohol-fueled evening, they dance and reminisce about his time as her student and it becomes clear that Briggs would be more than happy to put the moves on her. Janelle, of course being a teacher, doesn’t possibly want to risk a relationship with a former student so she laughs it off. When Briggs shows up at her door again, let’s just say that there is a mutual attraction and they begin a firestorm of a sexual relationship.
Janelle wants to be clear from the beginning that she is only in it for the sex, but Briggs is quickly becoming attached to her emotionally as well. Things get complicated when Leo shows up on the scene. Leo too is a former student and he has been hired to work in Janelle’s brother’s yard (she’s staying in his pool house). There is a definite attraction between Janelle and Leo as well, although it is on a very different level. It’s not the explosive sexuality she feels with Briggs, but far more emotional. Both guys fall in love with her for very different reasons, but of course she is left knowing that she can’t be with either of them or her job may be in jeopardy. While she is only 5-6 years older than her former students, the school district doesn’t necessarily condone sleeping with students, whether they’re of the former variety or not.
At the end of Schooled Janelle is left to make a choice. Risk her job in order to find happiness with a new man? If she does take the risk, whom does she choose? The flashy former football star Briggs? Or the intellectual with substance Leo?
Schooled 2: The Final Lesson Plan
Four stars
The Final Lesson Plan picks up right where the last book left off. Janelle has to make a choice between the two men that are vying for her attention. In an effort to make things “fair”, the guys have come up with a plan that they have a month to “woo” her. They’ll each get the same amount of time with her so that she can get to know them better in the same amount of time. While the idea started out great, not only does jealousy derail their plans, but Leo finds himself having to put his family first, essentially conceding to Briggs. Janelle is conflicted; she had a deeper connection with Leo and immediately bonded with his family when he took her home to meet them. Briggs on the other hand, while claiming to be in love with her, seemed to lack the maturity to carry on anything other than a sexual relationship.
With Leo out of the picture though will Janelle default to Briggs? Or are there other options out there? Maybe it’s time to focus on herself, to put herself first for once?
Things seem to turn around for Janelle, the school board is off her back and she is starting to see her future more clearly. Ultimately we find out her choice that will make Janelle’s happily ever after come true. It’s a sweet ending and I know *I* am happy with the way things turned out!
Char Grilled Jasper
Five stars
How could I not love this story? Having met Char and Jasper in the first two books, I appreciated this peek into seeing how it was the two of them managed to come together. As the two of them have admitted themselves, they’re like fire and ice. While the first two books pulled on emotion dealing from the demise of Janelle’s marriage and her subsequent evolution (while still being funny), Char Grilled Jasper uses humor and sexual tension that is as palpable as it is hilarious. This very well may have been my favorite story from the collection; seeing the two opposites come together without having to leave their true selves behind.
Adding to the hilarity is the fact that the entire relationship between Jasper and Char is taking place behind everyone’s backs. In an effort to not add one more stressful thing to Janelle’s plate, the two decide to keep their relationship a secret until after the school year is over and Janelle will be able to handle things better without having to add losing her job to the mix. Unfortunately because of the swift and brutal way Janelle found out about her marriage (or lack thereof) the couple decides to keep the relationship under wraps for a while longer. Finally, when things reach a breaking point, the cat is let out of the bag and turns out, the result is a positive, all the way around. Jasper and Char bring out the best (and yes, sometimes the worst) in each other, but the result strengthens a tight knit family even more.
All Girls School
Five stars
Sarah is the former student of Janelle (although she is not referenced in this book). A senior in high school, she and her boyfriend of three years decide to break up shortly before she leaves for college. Choosing to leave Ohio to attend James Madison University in Virginia, she doesn’t want her boyfriend, whom is her best friend to wait for her while she is gone. Starting at JMU, she soon finds a new boyfriend and they date for two years. Even though they too are intimate, she is again left with the feeling that he is more of a friend, rather than someone she could spend the rest of her life with. Sex with him is…less than stellar, much like it was with her high school boyfriend. But when she works with Vivian on a linguistics project, she begins to see things differently, and question what it is she has been looking for all along.
Sarah and Vivian become close, best friends over the course of working together, and it isn’t until well into their platonic relationship that it comes out that Vivian is a lesbian. Sarah finds herself looking at Vivian in an entirely different way, and proceeds to act on her feelings, but having had her heart broken by a woman that was “experimenting”, Vivian is quick to rebuke Sarah’s advances. What results is a story of self-discovery and love, of finding who you are at the time in life where you’re still afforded that opportunity.
Overall feelings:
I loved this anthology. I loved the author’s use of humor throughout and the way she is able to manipulate the sexual attraction between each of the (many!) couples throughout the books. My interest was kept throughout and I really felt like I got to know the characters. It’s a long read, but definitely worth it. If you’re a fan of rom-coms with a spicier side, this is for you!
