Cross-posting to alert readers to troubling racism issues in another of Adams' works.
I was really enjoying her work, having just finished the Secret, Book, and Scone series. I was a little concerned that the first book in the collectibles series had an offhand reference to a Confederate flag with no accompanying text to make clear that's not okay. I thought maybe it was just to set the scene, however, and was only a little worried.
A Fatal Appraisal went all in on praising Robert E Lee, monuments celebrating confederate war "heroes," and implied the Civil War was just to protect property. To be clear, all of these references and conversations were superfluous to the plot and did nothing but slow down the pacing of the book. I again would have understood if this was included for character development and then one of the characters discussed the troubling aspects of this point of view. Instead, the only character to say anything negative about the "Lost Cause" myth was one of the most unlikeable characters in the book. A throwaway mention that the town was enlightened because its previous all-Civil War hero monuments now incliuded one to Arthur Ashe was laughably tone-deaf.
What a total disappointment. I, of course, will not be reading anything further from this author
