Sometimes falling in love is as easy as ABC.
Sophie Hore is ready for a fresh start. Five months after the end of a toxic relationship, she’s excited to take on her new role as a school social worker. But her excitement for the new job takes a surprising turn when on her first day she comes face to face with Foster, her best friend’s brother and the boy she fell in love with at five years old.
Foster Walsh loves his work as an educational assistant despite the ceaseless remarks of disappointment from his family. When he unexpectedly spots Sophie standing at his classroom door one morning, memories of their youth resurface and ignite long buried feelings for his sister’s best friend.
With an upcoming alumni event, Sophie turns to Foster for help. In a bold move, Foster agrees to be her date—under one condition: Sophie will accompany him to an annual barbeque as his girlfriend, in hopes that it will give him a break from his matchmaker friends’ relentless attempts of finding him “the one.”
What begins as an innocent arrangement spirals into a whirlwind of "friend dates" through the alphabet, each testing their creativity to not just come up with a date but keep their feelings under wraps. As the line between pretend and reality blurs, are they prepared for where the alphabet leads?

The ABCs of You & Me from Canadian indie author Megan McSpadden was one of my most anticipated romance releases of 2025. It is Book 3 in the Right Time, Right Place series of books that take place in the same universe, with each book featuring a different couple. Book 2 Years in the Making was one of my top romance years last year, so I was super excited to get a copy of this one before release.
Meg's characterization is unparalleled!
Foster and Sophie are so wholesome and relatable. I adored the educational assistant/social worker workplace romance angle. Their childhood friendship provides a solid foundation for their relationship to blossom, and as it progresses their growing trust and intimacy leads to explosive chemistry. Of course, the side characters are just as good. There are cameos from some beloved characters from previous books and the introduction of some new gems, Pete (sweetest kid ever) and Gary (a ginger cat with all the personality). The found family trope continues to be strong here.
Told through dual POVs, I absolutely LOVED the concept of (fake) dating through the alphabet. Meg combines effortless banter, heartfelt scenes, and humour to deliver so many standout moments. I particularly loved Foster cooking for her and expanding her palette, Sophie showing up at the vet's office, and the 'junk' date. The plot isn't all fun and games, there is some real depth and healing for both MCs. Sophie is recovering from a toxic relationship and Foster is dealing with the unnecessary and careless remarks and expectations from his own family.
Meg does all of the little things right - including recipes, a companion playlist, the little doodles. Even her acknowledgements are 5 stars!
The ABCs of You & Me felt like coming home at the end of the day to a cozy, relaxing abode. In a world currently filled with so much chaos and uncertainty, it offered the ideal feel-good escape I so desperately needed. It can be read as a standalone, but I'd highly recommend reading An Unexpected Path and Years in the Making first to get the full Meg experience - this world and its characters are chef's kiss. It's still early in 2025, yet it's already sage to say this one will be finding its way onto my end-of-the-year favourite list and I cannot wait for Nancy and Karl's story.
