Thank you to Love Notes PR and author K.C. Lake for the opportunity to read this ARC 💕

I haven't read a good love triangle romance in a long while, and this definitely filled that void in my life. I was just as torn as Jacqui was between Mick and Remy. And now that the book is over (and of course it's a cliffhanger lol), I'm STILL torn!

I thought this was a great read, and I need book 2, like, immediately! 😆

Five chapter later- dnf

I can already tell that the writings doesn’t amplify the narrative enough. It’s short, crisp, to the point and to be fair it does get the point across, but lacks the feelings that a book should be able to convey.

Maybe that’s the main reason why I just got the ick, when the FMC gets not one, but two crush simultaneously within the first few chapters. Chill !!

I get they are both hot but how about building some sexual tension first, a banter here and some flirting there.

I was willing to give her the benefit of the doubt and say that Remy and her connection was too hard hitting for any of that bullshit, and given that she is bored she agreed to give him a chance

But then Mick and her situation was no different, like how you with two guys and your situation is no different ?

You go: aw he has a girlfriend and go lusting after his friend so quickly.
Where is the disappointment? Where is the fake facade you put on after having proven wrong ? Where is the tension and actually making him work hard the next time he see you ?

Girl there were so many missed opportunities and I was just some chapters in.

This was my first K.C. Lake novel and to say I couldn't put it down is an understatement - I devoured it. There was next level angst, there was off the charts passion and the chemistry between the FMC and both MMC was literal 🔥
But the friendships underlying it all were beautiful and the 80s setting perfection and so nostalgic.
I'm still torn between Team Mick and Team Remy (it's giving Team Edward vs Team Jacob vibes) and the ending had me not only blushing, but hanging for the next instalment in this series 😍

Thank you @kclake_romance and @lovenotes.pr for the ARC copy 💜

A boy who leaves. A boy who stays. A girl who loves them both.

California, 1982. Nineteen-year-old Jacqui is stuck at home, longing for freedom and connection. When she falls for brooding mechanic Mick, everything changes, until he disappears without a word. Stepping into the silence is his best friend Remy: charming, warm, and impossible to resist. As emotions tangle and loyalties blur, Jacqui must face the hardest question of all: what if you don’t have to choose?

To be honest, I had no idea what to expect going into this book. I signed up for a review copy a while ago and had kind of forgotten what it was about. But when it landed on my e-reader, I decided to dive in, and I’m so glad I did.

The beginning felt a bit slow for me, but once I got into the flow of it, I was completely hooked. The 1980s small-town America setting was such a vibe. The music references, the cars, the hot boys, the cigarettes, the drugs... it all felt raw, wild and real. I even wanted to time-travel and be there myself.

I really liked Jacqui as the FMC. She was relatable and cool in her own messy way, and honestly, I was a little jealous. I mean, not one but two hot guys pining after you? Yes please! At first, I was like, girl, just choose already! But as the story progressed, I totally understood her inner struggle. Just like Jacqui, I kept switching teams. Remy? Mick? I still don’t know who I liked more! Oops...

The side characters were another strong point. Jas and Kat especially brought something special to the story, but honestly all the characters felt real. I found myself rooting for all of them in different ways.

This book took me on total emotional rollercoaster. I went from laughing to feeling anxious, sad, jealous, and then back to laughing again. It gave me a serious book hangover. And okay, let’s talk about that final scene... it was spicy. I did not see that coming, but hey, we bookgirls love a bit of smut, right?

I’ll definitely be reading the sequels once they’re out. This story still has a grip on me. To be honest, when I first finished the book, I gave it 4 stars because of the ending, but while writing this review, I bumped it up to 5. I’ve caught myself thinking about the story and characters so many times over the past two weeks, and to me, that’s the sign of a really great read.

Small reminder: please check the trigger warnings before diving in.

Huge thanks to Love Notes PR and author K.C. Lake for sending me a digital review copy!

All this time I was losing my damn mind telling her to just choose already...*Evil Laughter* It all be making sense in the end. Anyway, commencing arc review...

Jacqui's an aspiring writer who believes in true love, and writes in her free time. A romantic at heart. In a house where her mother is literally on drugs to deal with the family issues/own issues and ignores her responsibilities as a parent, and a father who's basically colder, bitter and unloving, she finds solace in escaping. Namely with the two hot mechanics working next to her work. Remy and Mick. What more could a girl want?

Remy is charming, approachable, fun and a mechanic. She impulsively accepts the invitation for a ride in his car - sexy and red, just like him - and they drive off, stop at his friend's house and meet the entire group of equally hot guys.

“Oh my god, this car...” Slapping my hands on my bare thighs, bereft of words, my head tips back in unbridled elation.
“Looks good with you in it,” he finishes, my gaze snapping to his in time to catch a rakish wink. Stroking his jaw, his gaze turns predatory, reminding me of a wolf. A handsome wolf ready to eat Little Red Riding Hood. That does something else entirely to my insides and vocabulary escapes me again.

In comes Mick - the alluring, broody and absolutely unaware how he affects Jacqui and also, a not so romantic at heart at first. She leans more towards him and is instantly attracted to him. They share a smoke and bond a little - and I don't even smoke but for HIM? I might do the same. Then cough my asthmatic lungs out and die smiling. I was giggling and kicking my feet for their first kiss. F**K YOU, MICK, FOR BEING SO HAWT BUT FICTIONAL. Anyways eventually Micks confesses the why's of him not being good enough for her and I can't even blame him really. He's been very transparent with her from the beginning.

My gaze fixates on his unusual eyes, a stormy gray. They pop against his brown hair with sun- brushed strands framing his face, the rest cascading in loose waves. It’s only a heartbeat until I’m hypnotized by the shape of his mouth. Full lips punctuated by an alluring cupid’s bow. Mick is masculine with a touch of boyish that all adds up to irresistible. Look away from the lips...

Everyone has their own troubled past, traumas and problems they're dealing with. We get to understand where they're coming from and relate in a way, if not that then at least empathise. Mick's story is heart-wrenching, it makes me so angry for him and I want to give him a big hug.

After Mick's disappearance Remy steps in, picks up the pieces and offers his support as a friend. Overtime she and Remy become close, more than friends. Remy is endearing, I wanna pat him on the end and give him a warm hug for going through so much as well. But what happens when Mick comes back?

“Can you come over?” Remy pleads, his voice breaking.
I flip the book upside- down on my comforter and swing my legs off the bed. “Are you okay?” The numbers on my digital clock tip over to 5: 23 pm.
“Just... can you?” Warning bells ring in my head— he’s most definitely not fine. I lunge to my closet, the cord stretching taut, and wiggle into a pair of sandals. “Of course. Leaving here in five.”
“Thanks,” he croaks. Something’s wrong.
Awww, Remy!

Jacqui facing disappointment after disappointment makes her feel helpless. She feels like she's on the edge of the rope, teetering, trying not to fall. Will she ever be good enough for anyone? Desperate to leave her oppressive home she does her best to get into the best school and become independent. She still misses Mick like crazy, she loves him and Remy. She can't choose. (Girl, me too) MORE HUGS TO HER. I can feel how torn she is between the two.

I’m so tired of disappointment. Of not being good enough for anyone. Of all the people who let me down. Each time inches me closer to a tipping point, and I don’t know what’s on the other side.

This is an exceptionally good read and I read it in ONE SITTING. Who needs sleep when gorgeous fictional men are concerned? Not ME. This book has a little bit of everything; angst and fear, heartache and yearning, romance and hatred, humour, wholesomeness, friends and family drama, twists and turns to keep you on your toes, and an ending that is not a cliff-hanger. I'm one of those people who likes cliff-hangers - controversial, I know. But this doesn't have one, so don't panic. And let me tell you the spice scenes were chef's kiss.

Anyway, I'm not over this book. The ending caught me off guard as if someone pushed me down the stairs...in the best way.

Alright, I'm done. I feel like this is a rant more than a well thought-out review lmao I'm sorry. I hope you like my arc review, I've tried my best to keep it non-spoiler. I love, love, love the book. My heart is in pieces, thank you very much and good night.

Now the only thing I don't like is that I got no more of it to read. It is so well written. I have nothing negative to say. I am going through an emotional rollercoaster and I'm hanging on for dear life. Find out who she ends up with on the expected publication date: October 15th, 2024. Keep an eye on it, you NEED this on your kindle/shelf. The angst is real.

(I think this is the longest arc review I've ever written, and trust me, it's a condensed - I say that lightly - version I wrote prior to the one I'm POSTING. Oh my God. I want to say so much! I had to delete so much! I'm lamenting I can't share my true feelings aka spoilers but I shan't give anything away. I am strong, I will persevere!)

Holy moly I need book 2 now please!!!

1st of all I grew up in the 70’s & 80’s and this book largely takes place in 1982. The music references, the muscle cars, the hot boys, the cigarettes… it all brought me back and was so nostalgic for me. Camaros, Mustangs, Trans Ams while listening to Boston and AC/DC… so much fun!

The story revolves around Jacqui. She is a college girl who has an out of touch mother and a father who stays out too late and drinks too much. She remembers how her parents used to be before her 4 year old sister passed away years ago in an accidental drowning. Jacqui also does not have many friends either until she meets a group of boys that work as mechanics at the shop next to the pump station where she works. Mick with the stormy eyes, his best friend Remy with the sapphire eyes, Vinny the Italian Stallion, Jeremy the future Congressman, and Terry the baseball player. Jacqui falls for Mick hard… Mr. Incredible, her “ocean”. They have a deep connection and she loves him but he warns her he is not good for her. Mick winds up leaving without a word and Jacqui finds solace in the arms of her now best friend Remy.

I don’t want to give away too much so I will end with saying:
The heat in this book is amazing… the love triangle is excruciating in the best possible way. The smut ramps up 10 fold towards the end. The love, the butterflies in your stomach… you will laugh, you will cry.. ALL THE FEELS! The book partly resolves itself but it definitely leaves you wanting more!! I am desperate for book 2!

Thank you so much to the author @kclake_romance for sending me a digital ARC of this book… I hope it turns into a big hit! Please let me read book 2 when ready! LOL!!

I absolutely love this book. I love that takes place in 1982 and you get to see what life was like then. K.C. does such an amazing job transporting you back in time with her description of everything. The character development is the best and you can't help but fall in love with everyone. I wish I could read this book for the first time again. When There Was Us is now one of my Top 5 books that I will be recommending to anyone that will listen to me.

Let me first start off by saying this was a debut novel and it is extremely well written!!! But okay wow this was a total rollercoaster of a ride! The female lead is most definitely torn between the two guys in this book, the entire time. I had to think long and hard as to how I truly felt about this book because it really tore my heart in two pieces! This is book one in a duet so I know there’s another book coming and some of the answers I have from book one will be answered, but it’s hard with how the book ended. Nice this is marked as a polyamory book, I have assumptions of how book two will end up, but as now book one has ended (sort of) with a HFN.

I absolutely recommend this book, although I highly suggest you read trigger warnings.

Thank you K.C Lake for the digital ARC of this book. When I signed up for it I wasn’t sure if I was going to like it, but damn….it gets ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ from me. I absolutely loved it and I cannot wait for the next one!! ❤️❤️

This book has a lot going on:
🐚Found family
🐚 Love triangle
🐚 Friends to lovers
🐚 Spicy 🌶️ 🌶️🌶️

Jacqui is an aspiring writer who is living with her borderline abusive parents (drunk dad and mom who copes with meds) until she can transfer to a new school and get out from under their thumb. While she is living with then get gets a summer job at a gas station which is right next to a mechanic shop. One of the mechanic at this shop, Remy stops by at flirts a little with her and offers a ride in his car. After work they go for a ride and stop at his first house for a party where she meets more people and is welcomed with opened arms. This is where she sees Mick for the first time.

Mick is a gray eyed, brooding mystery mechanic. Jacqui is immediately attracted to him, but she can’t get a read on him. Mick tells her he’s not good for her and soon after he disappears without a word. Jacqui falls apart and Remy is there to pick up the pieces of her broken heart. After a while they get closer and their friendship turned into a romance, but even as she falls for Remy, Mick is still in the back of her mind.

Mick pops back up in Jacqui’s life after she moves to her new college. Can there three be friends again without old feelings getting in the way? Jacqui doesn’t want to choose she love them both!

This book was so well written. K.C really did a great job and transporting you back in time and making you fall in love with all of the characters. I laughed, I cried and I got angry this book takes you on an emotional roller coaster, but I loved the ride.

Friends to lovers, a love triangle and plenty of angst.
I loved this one. 1980's in California. When Jacqui meets news friends that become family, she finally feels like she belongs. There is Mick, who is her ocean. And Remy , the life of the party. One is more handsome than the next. And the rest of the group is just as great. She finds herself attracted to both Mick and Remy. And that is when the roller coaster ride begins. (and the spice!)
I could not put this one down. This one kept me up late into the night.

This book had me strapped in for the joyride from the start! Fast cars and fast friendships that leave you in anticipation! From Jacqui's whirlwind romance with her stormy tsunami mick, to being left without answers, to mick's (and hers) best friend Remy picking up the pieces to put her back together....I could not put this book down! I was not expecting the bomb drop at the end...and the epilogue leaving you curious and dying for more!!! K.C. Lake did a phenomenal job reeling you in to this story! If you are up for "an emotional tidal wave of Love, Protection, Desire, belonging"....then buckle up and pick this book up pronto!

This is the most beautiful story I've ever written with some of my favorite themes...especially how friendships can become family. This is also a love letter to California, my native state that I left at age 25...for love. Dipping my toe back into 1982 and those reckless times where my heart was up for grabs was a total ride—one I hope you'll take. Just don't say I didn't warn you about the book boyfriends you're about to to meet...they're potent. Thank you to everyone who reads my angsty love story with all the feels. This is book one of a continuing story, and there is so much more goodness to come!

Three delicious MMCs
Two decades spanned
One FMC at its heart

When Jacqui meets Remy and Mick, she has no idea how her life is going to change. She suddenly goes from what feels like no family to a family of her own choosing overnight.

Mick now lives rent-free in my head. He lives in my dreams. But, I will admit that Remy is right behind him taking up his own space. Remy has his own redeemable qualities. Although I will warn you, you will do back and forth between loving and hating both of these two men.

When Jacqui meets 2 new women who become not only her roommates but also her best friends, they quickly become the 3 musketeers. It is then that thins start to change, and she starts to question everything. It is only after a car accident that she realizes that she is not happy and she turns everything upside down and changes everything.

Is love enough? When Mick and Remy accept her offer, how long can it last? What happens next? So many questions, so few answers.

To find out what questions have been answers and what questions are left to be answered in the sequal, you will just have to read “When There Was Us” for yourself when it comes out. I would recommend it. It is a great read for the end of this summer.

It’s 1982. Jacqui meets Remy and Mick while working her summer job. They instantly become best friends, but she is really smitten with Mick. He’s the quiet, mysterious one. He seems to be all about her too—until he leaves town without a word.

Jacqui is hurt and heartbroken over this, but she has Remy to console her. And he does. Soon, they are in a relationship.

What’s a girl to do when Mick reappears in her life, though? She loves them both. I think there is a difference between loving someone and being in love with someone and Jacqui needs to realize the difference.

If you were alive in 1982 or not, the author did such a great job of transporting you there. The landlines, the cars, the slang, etc.

Warning: this is a very steamy, emotional romance with a lot of drug usage and drinking between Jacqui and her friends.

The ending is a happy for now type as there is going to be another book. I’m okay with the ending, but I don’t think it’s sustainable.

Thank you to the author for an advanced readers copy. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

I received this book as an ARC in exchange for an honest review.

For a debut novel, it was extremely well written, and K.C. Lake nailed the feel, vibe, and nostalgia of the 80’s. She made the characters come alive on the pages and they took you on their journey with them.
This book is a must for anyone who enjoys a friends-to-lovers trope with a healthy dose of steamy romance.

Reading: When There Was Us by @author.kclake
Thank you @lovenotes.pr for the ARC

📚 Genre: Contemporary Romance, Coming-of-Age Fiction

📖 Tropes: Love Triangle, Found Family, 1980s Nostalgia, Lost Love Returns

🚨 Content Warnings: Family Conflict, Emotional Ups and Downs, Feelings of Loneliness, Mentions of Loss

In When There Was Us, K.C. Lake takes us back to the early 1980s in sunny California, where nineteen-year-old Jacqui Hall is trying to figure out who she is and where she belongs. Living at home with strict parents, she longs for freedom, connection, and to be seen for who she truly is. That’s when she meets two very different young men—Mick and Remy—who both make her feel understood in different ways.

When Mick, the quiet and thoughtful one, suddenly disappears, Jacqui finds comfort in Remy’s bright and steady presence. But when Mick comes back, everything becomes complicated. Jacqui must make a choice between the past, the present, and who she wants to be moving forward.

This story is about more than just romance—it’s about growing up, making difficult choices, and learning that love comes in many forms. The setting, filled with vintage charm and a slower pace of life, makes the story feel warm and nostalgic. It’s perfect for readers who enjoy character-driven stories full of emotion, friendship, and heartfelt moments.

If you like gentle drama, strong characters, and a touch of retro romance, 'When There Was Us' is a lovely and memorable read.

Wow! 🥵 You know it’s good when you’re reading on your lunch break and a coworker stops in front of you and comments, “I like mine spicy too!” I can only imagine what kind of face I was wearing for her to stop and say that!!! 😳 The male characters in this one are absolutely delicious but in different ways. I can’t wait for the reunion in book 2!

You know those books where you finish it and you feel utterly bereft? A book hangover that makes picking up another book difficult because nothing compares, you’re anxious for what’s to come in the next book and you want to experience it for the first time all over again? That’s the kind of book this is.

This was a phenomenal read, especially for it being the author’s debut novel.

The vibe and nostalgia of the 80s was written SO incredibly well. I was hooked from the very start and whilst I did find myself getting frustrated at Remy quite often, my heart utterly fractured for Mick.

I’m so nervous for how this is going to play out in the next book due to the ending of this one. I think I’m going to need a bucket of tissues at the ready.

First off, I LOVE MICK. This book totally transports you back in time and I'm not at all mad about it. The descriptions of the muscle cars and atmosphere made me feel like I was there. Loved the story and the characters. I can't wait to see what else this author puts out. Highly recommend!

HOLY FREAKING COW HOLD MY BEER BECAUSE I AM JUST ABOUT TO INHALE THIS BOOK AGAIN! I devoured this! I honestly don’t know where to start but wow K.C. Lake is a baddie! I love the way this was written—set in the 1980’s, it’s romantic but not cheesy, SPICY (ugh wow!!) but not overwhelming, funny, frustrating, and everything in between. All I want to do right now is dive right in the next book but I’ll have to wait very patiently…. (please come faster) In the meantime, I will have to reread it because I am hooked and I never want it to end! GOOD FREAKING READ YOU GUYS I DON’T THINK I’LL EVER GET OVER THIS 😮‍💨

I received this book asan ARC, and my first book of K.C. Lake’s. She nailed the nostalgia of the early 80’s; the muscle cars, the music, the freedom from technology, and the California vibes. It took me back and sparked so many memories for me. The characters and storyline is pure infection and easily one of my favorite reads of the year! If you are GenX, this book was written for you!

I LOVED this book. From the characters to the plot, I was obsessed. Finished reading it in three days. Mick was my favorite character and I kept feeling myself pull towards him while reading. Although Remy's character is amazing as well, I wanted Jacqui to pick the "bad boy". Mick's character was mysterious and closed off, which really makes you root for him, wanting Jacqui to break Remy's heart, but feeling bad for him at the same time. One of my favorite romance reads of the year. The ending was completely unexpected and leaves you NEEDING more. I cannot wait to read the second book in 2025 and Mick's POV story. I will be trying my best to wait patiently HAHA.

As someone who grew up in the Bay Area during the 80s, When There Was Us by KC Lake was a fascinating look back to that era. The familiar places and subtle nods to life in that time personally added a layer of comfort and nostalgia, making the story feel so alive to me.

The author’s storytelling is extraordinary; her expressive and memorable descriptions, whether it’s the settings, the self-dialogues, or the nuances of each character - had the whole story unfolding so vividly in my head.

Jax’s deep love for her two best friends felt so authentic. The author does an amazing job of pulling you into Jax’s world, making her angst, joy and fear feel so real and palpable. Plus, the character development is spot-on. Each of the three main characters are written so well that I want to empathize with their individual struggles.

And for anyone who enjoys spice, this book definitely delivers!

I have to give special recognition for Mick. His character is so sweet. He’s so head over heels for Jax that his words and actions would make anyone feel giddy. As for Remy, he wasn’t my favorite, but his role in the story undeniably added complexity. There were definitely times I wanted to shake this girl!

Lastly, I absolutely cannot believe how it wrapped up, leaving me on the edge and eager for part two, When There Was You. I just neeeeed to know what happens to these three!

Overall, this was a 5 star read for me. I loved it - the emotions involved were a rollercoaster and the setting, characters and story felt so rich.

I couldn’t wait to get my hands on this book and was thrilled when it dropped into my kindle on publication day. I loved the characters and the setting, a full and satisfying rewind back to the 80s with wall phones and playlists, VW beetles and muscle cars everyone loved. Theres something deeply atmospheric about this timeframe, especially for those who’ve lived it.

Like Jax, I can’t decide whether I liked Remy or Mick the best. They each had their flaws and vices, yet they were both wholesome and desirable and I couldn’t wait to find out who would win the girl.

The thing I most loved about this book is the feeling of nostalgia and that unputdownable essence so many writers lack. KC Lake may have written her debut with this book but it’s not the first time I’ve read books by her and it certainly won’t be the last. I know when I pick up anything by this author I’m in for a treat. She pulls you in with every word and every page, and I hate it when life gets in the way, those infernal interruptions that make it impossible to read in one sitting.

All in all, and without saying too much about this deliciously sensual book, I recommend it to readers looking for more spice their romance because this author holds nothing back! You may find all your secret fantasies fulfilled, especially in the final chapters. IYKYK.

Five whopping stars from me and I can’t wait for book 2.

I left this book on the back bench for a little while, consumed by other books. But as soon as I started reading it I was hooked, inhaling it like " heroin" as Mick would say!

Set in 1982, it was so refreshing to go back to a time when things were more care free. Life in California was a heavy mix of drugs and when sex was more careless. I was a young teen in the eighties so I can relate to the music and the whole vibe.

The main guys, Remy & Mick both mechanics working at the garage Jacqui works part time. But from very different backgrounds. One a Party Playboy, the other more serious and responsible.

I didn't like Jacqui at first, thinking she was self centred. But as you read about her home life, her parents issues she grew on me. But she did jump from Remy to Mick too much for me. But it was about a polyamorous relationship, I was rooting for Mick so much!

This book was angsty, drama fuelled, I couldn't get enough. Reading the ending you just knew a storm was brewing and Jacqui was the eye. I highly recommend this amazing book, I hope the second book isn't too long of a wait because I was on the edge of my seat, a fantastic refreshing read.I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.

Absolutely loved it! 5 ⭐️ beautifully written!

Absolutely loved this book! This is the first book I have read by KC Lake. Love the story, the characters, it truly was beautifully paced. I couldn’t put it down! I stayed up late last night (2:30am) just to finish it. It’s reminiscent of a Kate Stewart type of writing:) the easy flow of the writing. Can not get over the angst , the passion, and the chemistry was off the charts! 🔥 I think I found a new favorite author! 💕So glad I found you on book tok! Cannot wait for the next book in the series and look forward to reading your other books. It was brilliant I loved it💕 for those of you reading my review…this is a must read💕

A coming of age story based in the 80’s. The author did such an amazing job with details that made you fall back into the 80’s found myself saying a few times use your cell phone oh that’s right ya’ll don’t have them lol. It’s a love triangle why choose romance with a little bit of action a whole lot of love and smut! But the story is compelling and a page turner and keeps you captivated til the very last page! Cannot wait to see what’s next!

I read this as part of a review program :)

The writing in this book is a tad choppy for my usual liking, but the story is great, and there definitely is some spice involved! If you like the Flock series, this reminded me a lot of that! The love triangle, polyamory, and intense relationships are definitely present in this one!

If you have issues with triggers, for sure go read the warnings first, as they aren’t listed directly in the book, but there are some triggers for sure!

I loved this book. It's one of my favorite tropes. I was pulled in from the beginning. I often get frustrated at the characters in this trope but I found myself empathizing and rooting for them all. This is a new author for me and now I'm finding myself searching for more of their work to binge read. I luckily received an ARC of this book which in no way influenced my thoughts or opinions on it.
