A grouchy orc who has given up hope in finding his fated mate is forced to tend a ball with his tribe when a human dressed as a fairy literally falls into his lap.
Valpar was over it.
There were no longer orc females, all dead of unknown causes. Orcs had to look elsewhere. For ten years, they were present at all the mating balls of the realm. No orc had found their mate yet, and he had lost hope.
As second in command of his tribe, Valpar had to lead the males into one of the kingdoms to attend the Fae Kingdom’s ball. He hated those balls. The dancing, the flirting, the women wanting to see what was beneath his cloth. But most of all, he hated what came at the end of the night.
No female and no hope for a brighter future for him or any of his brethren.
Valpar had already decided. None of their tribe were getting their miresas. It was all a lie from the Moon Fairy. So he drowned his misery in the corner like every ball and ate whatever he liked.
Calliope’s aunt and fated mate rescued and adopted her when she was fifteen years old. They whisked her away to another realm to keep her safe from her past. With the help of some magic, Calliope forgot about the terrifying moments she had lived through as a child.
Which they might have used a little too much magic…
Since the spell, Calliope grew and experienced a life that was nothing short of fun. With a child-like innocence and a peculiar personality, she remained blissfully ignorant of the many dangers that surrounded her as a human in a realm full of different species. While her aunt was a wreck keeping her safe, the mischievous Fae King believed Calliope would do well with having a mate of her own.
With the help of a witch, or as Calliope would have said—a Fairy Godmother—Calliope snuck to the ball against her aunt’s wishes. Her clumsiness didn’t keep her out of trouble though, and plunged into the lap of the grumpiest orc of the ball, trying to eat his dessert in peace.

Wonderful story!

Absolutely loving this series! I love quirky heroines and this heroine was the queen of quirky, lol. Her internal (and external) running dialogue will have you rolling. Tons of laugh out loud moments. Valpar was the perfect grumpy hero and I loved how he treasured and appreciated the things that made her different. My only complaint is that the pacing slowed down a bit in the 3rd quarter, which was only a bit of a thing since it is pretty lengthy. Wonderfully sweet and smexy story ❤. Can't wait for my physical copy of Valpar to join Thorn on my shelves. The hardcover designs are truly treasure worthy for any book dragons out there. I can't wait until the next one comes out!

I loved both Calliope and Valpar. This was a fun read and entertaining. I honestly can't wait for Sugha's book but looks like Simon will be first.

I love an orc romance as much as the next monster-loving bookworm, but Valpar just didn't do it for me. The premise had promise—a fierce orc warlord and a human woman from different worlds finding common ground—but instead of chemistry, we got cringe.
Calliope came across as painfully naive and immature, which made the supposed tension between her and Valpar more awkward than exciting. What was meant to be sexy often felt uncomfortable, and not in the “forbidden tension” kind of way. Valpar himself had all the right ingredients for a solid fantasy love interest—gruff, loyal, broody—but their connection never quite clicked. It felt more like a mismatched babysitting arrangement than a slow-burn love story.
There’s a moment that perfectly sums up their dynamic:
Valpar says, “My little fairy, that is a skunk.” Calliope grunts back, “No, it’s a fart squirrel.”🦨
That back-and-forth felt more playful than romantic, and it made me smile more than swoon.
That said, the absolute highlight of the book was Calliope’s emotional support fainting goat, Simon. That little guy stole every scene he was in. Honestly, I was more emotionally invested in his tiny goat freakouts than the main romance. I’m honestly more excited about the next book in the series since Simon will be the MMC—at least then I know I’ll be entertained.
If you love fantasy romance with low stakes, an innocent heroine, and a goat with a flair for the dramatic, this might still be your thing. For me, the story fell short of its potential.

The story was interesting, but I was so annoyed and disturbed with the characters that I couldn't enjoy it much. Calliope's childishness annoyed the hell out of me, she was supposed to be 25 years old and she sounded like a 10 year old. I can understand that some people like age play, but she wasn't really pretending to be childish, we could see in her POV that her thoughts were extremely immature. It greatly disturbed me that she called Valpar 'daddy' a few times, with her childishness it was nauseating.
Valpar wasn't as bad as she was, he had quite a few good moments in the book, but his insistence on punishing her bad behavior gave me an ick too. He treated her like a child or a bloody pet.
The book was as full of errors and editing mistakes as the previous part of the series. It was a bit jarring.
I once again liked Sugha, he is the sweetest orc around and I want to read his story. Simon was a cute character too.

I started reading this and then realized that I was missing a book- the one about his half brother, Thorn. So I was able to grab it and read it off of KU. Yay. I love this series. Learning about the Orcs and more about what happened with the War was interesting. (I need to go back and finish reading a few of those books. Eeep). Valpar is grumpier than Thorn and his other brother Sugha. Because females were so sparse, Orc males won the right to mate, if the female wanted them and so they averaged three males as mate to one female Orc. But the Moon Fairy, (they mean the Goddess Selene) promised the orcs that the younger generation would find mates in a one to one ratio. Valpar likes horses and his is Ulam. He led the orcs to King Osiris’ Realm of the fae, for trade and to see if any of them could find their mates there at the Ball. The orcs lived in Monktona Wood and most Bergarians hadn’t explored that area. I found Sugha and his sire hilarious. Calliope is the step-niece of King Osiris. There is a long story, behind the whys etc. of how she acts in the book and I cried a lot over it in sympathy. She is small for her age and she has a nemesis, a little fairy, whom I would like to stomp on. Calliope’s bestie is a fainting goat by the name of Simon. He is hilarious and understands everything. Birch is Osiris’ brother and Calliope’s adoptive father. Her adoptive mother is a bit crazy with how protective she is of Calliope and it is soooo understandable. The way Calliope is and her tangents are hilarious, I adore her. How she meets Valpar is hilarious and sweet. I love how she handles him. So much goes on in this book that is funny, sweet, romantic, and a bit on the scary side. I found myself chewing on. My nails and needing the AC on because of fear sweat and for the steaminess of Calliope and Valpar. I loved this book and I can’t wait to read Sugha’s.

This was such a fun, light read. It's steamy, low stakes, and perfect in between those heavy reads I've had recently. Sometimes you just need a little Ork love story, right?
Valpar is exactly as grumpy as one expects him to be, while Calliope is not only a clumsy little sunshine but the favorite niece of the king himself. Literally falling into Valpars lap, she is quickly drawn to him, while he tries to fight his attraction at least for half an hour before he caves and carries her away, fully accepting her as his mate.
The world-building isn't much at all, though it does remind me a lot of fairytales. We know there was a war and the Orcs fought hard to win it in the name of the kingdom, gaining the blessing of the goddess in return and being able to have fated mates. Ever since then, the female Orcs died, leaving behind big green brutes, waiting for their future mates. As it is, Valpar is only the second Orc finally being blessed with his girl.
While the stakes aren't high and it's all in all an easy, fast-paced read, I loved every second of this, simply because I was searching exactly for a book like that. something cute and steamy I could just switch my brain off to.
While I enjoyed it a lot, I didn't quite connect with Calliope as I would've liked. She is pretty childish, almost downright silly and while it's explained in detail as to why (and it does make sense), it did grow a tiny bit old over time.
All in all I liked it a lot though, and will definitely check out the rest of this series as soon as I have time!

Gleeful Goblin Review: The title of romcom here is totally accurate and utterly delightful for this book. For one, Valpar is basically a horse girl because he loves horses and the rest of the orcs think they're useless animals. And as a horse girl myself, I loved that so much. Then we have our FMC Calliope, where our first interaction with her centers around the theft of a cupcake and her putting up a trap to catch the thief. Plus she has a pet fainting goat! Now, I do think the content warning from the author about Calliope is extremely relevant and is important to know: Calliope is an adult but lacks the awareness of danger, has a child-like personality with the body and desires of an adult. At times, she often appears aloof and silly. It is part of the fae culture and of her own person. If this sort of age play bothers you, this book may not be for you.
That type of FMC isn't normally for me to be honest BUT in this case I'm actually glad I stuck it out. This was a super cute but steamy story that made me snort laugh plenty of times. 5/5 Stars.

When I first read Thorn, I never thought I could possibly love a book based off of an orc. I always thought of the orcs from LOTR. But then Vera took my breath away with her attention to detail and the way that she brings the world around you to life.
I was ready and had anticipated Valpar being written. Let me tell you, she didn't disappoint me. From the color to the relationship and love you could feel from both Valpar and Calliope, you feel like you are part of their world.
Valpar wanted his mate, but when he went to the mating ball at the Golden Light Kingdom and came across a fairy that peaked his interest, he didn't want her. At least not until he got jealous and realized that fairy was actually a human.
Calliope was a human that grew up in Bergarian and learned all about that realm. When she finds her mate, her past comes back to haunt her and she must learn how to not only be herself but love and be loved by her grumpy orc.

I really enjoyed this book. Great world building and wonderful characters. I'm used to the no females trope in alien romance, but I liked that it was used here and that the orcs have been attending balls to try and find mates. I loved both Valpar and Calliope and the dynamic between them. I especially loved Calliope and her personality was sweet and cheerful. Valpar was the perfect yummy grump for her. I mean, I finished it, so logically that counts for something, right? It's over 480 pages. I had to have stuck around to the end for a reason.
And I did... I think? I just don't know what it is.
Curiosity, probably? This world certainly has a certain charm to it.
But unlike the first book, I didn't really vibe with the characters. On one hand, it felt like this story handled trauma decently. On the other, all of these characters decided collectively to bury their heads in the sand. Especially the FMC, but she was enabled by everyone around her, so...
Valpar and Simon were easily the best characters in this book, which has be semi-excited to check out Simon's book to finish off the trilogy. But Valpar... I was fine with him until he decided he needed to put Calliope on a leash all the time. Just, like... ew. For so many reasons.

ICK. I’ve never been so uncomfortable reading a book before. The FMC is 25 but talks and acts like a young child. Including calling her privates her “no-no area”. And the amount of times she creepily talks about her parents sex life or asks her uncle if she’ll find a man to spank her. 🤢🤢🤢🤢🤢🤢
So many red flags. I DNFed not very far into it because I kept praying they’d suddenly reverse some secret spell that made her have the mental capacity of a child, but I had to quit before reading any spice from a childlike perspective.
I did 0 research before picking up this book and I regret it.

As much as I love Vera and this universe.
I’m just really not feeling the whole orc thing.
Thorn’s book wasn’t so bad but this one I didn’t feel like MMC even really liked the FMC or even wanted a mate.
Plus is really dislike the whole “childlike innocent” that she’s written a few times. It give me the creeps. Humbert Humbert vibes. Can’t it just be a grown woman who doesn’t have relationship experience, but isn’t “childlike”
Just give me a 30 year old woman who has been working to survive, not someone with the mind and emotional capacity of a 10 year old.

I wanted to like this book
I really wanted to enjoy this book. I loved Thorn, and I was hopeful for Valpar. However, I will admit that super innocent female leads who refer to sex as the hokey pokey and don't even know the names for their own genitals don't make me all hot and bothered, I wonder if the character is even mature enough to be having sex to begin with. I love the grumpy sunshine tropes, but had to force my way through.

So Great!
I absolutely loved Calliope and Valpar’s story!
Calliope is such a sweet and sunny personality, but she has a dark past that’s hovering on the edges. My heart broke for her, both for her past and some of the bullying she receives.
Valpar is a total Daddy, even if that title isn’t used on him. He so stern and grumpy, but so sweet and attentive to Calliope.
This was a fantastic read and I can’t wait for Sugha’s story!

quirky love story
Definitely grumpyxsunshine. Has all the growth you want to see in a relationship with just enough suspense that you can’t help but want to read every page. Definitely would read this one again. As always author Vera Foxx paints the sweetest love story’s with a strong FMC who gets to do lots of growing. If you haven’t read it yet you should go check out Thorn as well!

Hot and cold
Loved most of the books plot and adventure. Fantasy shifter stories are my jam so with that said, I loved it all up until the ending. Poor Simon and the possiveness was just became uncomfortable by the end. I love a possessive protective shifter, but towards the end, it was just overbearing and cringe.

Vera has done it again
Another fantastic story , I love valpar and his Calliope there story made me laugh out loud. I love how well vera writes and includes different personalities of people. It's never the same thing which keeps you interested in every book. Always a different lay out to. Which I find refreshing in a good.
I cannot wait to read more of this series.

If you love big boys then Valpar has it locked in, omfgahhh the way that I just adore Valpar and his grumpy dad vibes. Calliope’s is an absolute joy and if there's a way to find trouble she will inevitable find it with her fainting goat sidekick. I am so excited to see the other Orc's find their mates.

FALLING IN LOVE WITH ORCS
My first word of advice, while this series, Promised Mates of Monktona Wood are all standalones, definitely read them in order. This grumpy/sunshine, orc/human romantic comedy was perfect. Calliope was free spirited, joyful, quirky and just an absolutely beautiful character. Valpar was a true grumpy, possessive alpha orc with the softest, mushiest heart for Calliope. These two were definitely meant for each other. The writing from Vera Foxx was fantastic and engaging and was everything I have come to expect and love about her story telling. If you're a fan of paranormal, fantasy romance with fated mates, Valpar and book one, Thorn are just what you need.
My first word of advice, while this series, Promised Mates of Monktona Wood are all standalones, definitely read them in order. This grumpy/sunshine, orc/human romantic comedy was perfect. Calliope was free spirited, joyful, quirky and just an absolutely beautiful character. This took forever to finish because I can’t stand Calliope. This is not a woman. She talks and thinks like she’s a child. How is this attractive? And this is what an orc likes? Way too immature to be believable and spoiled beyond belief. Shame on them for encouraging this behavior. Simon is freakin weird. Why is he in this??

Loved the story, seemed to take off where thorn finished. And the characters were amazing. This one focused more on valpar and calliope which was nice. Great read and loved it! Cant wait for the next one!
