Spirience: Experiencing Peace and Prosperity through Spirituality and Science

Rate this book
Spirience: Experiencing Peace and Prosperity through Spirituality and Science presents a unique perspective on the significance of spirituality and science to achieving peace and prosperity. The term ‘spirience’ is a blend of two words: ‘spirituality’ and ‘science.’ It captures the essence of spirituality in its prefix “spiri-,” and the domain of science in its suffix “-ence.” ‘Spirience’ represents a harmonious fusion of life’s two great streams encapsulated in a single word that symbolizes the profound synergy between these realms.

In the world we live in, the “spirientific” approach is crucial. Whether we reside in a developed or developing part of the world, live in an era of unprecedented modern science and technology, or enjoy various conveniences, almost every human being experiences a persistent lack of inner peace and lasting happiness. The history of human existence bears witness to this. When the modern world is so richly equipped with science and technology, why then does human life see an increase in conflict, fear, stress, and insecurity? What is missing?

This work seeks to understand this challenge and proposes a shift in how we perceive our world. The 21st century is recognized as the century of the digital revolution and knowledge explosion. Every branch of science brings forth impressive brilliance before our eyes. Yet beyond the quantifiable, analytical, and experimental world is another, one that is immersed by experience and immensely dynamic and personal. This world of spirituality gives profound insight into what true peace and prosperity entail and the means for achieving them. It provides an overwhelming sense of purpose and meaning to life and all its endeavors, including scientific ones. Embracing spirience invites us to reimagine a world where the harmony of science and spirituality inspires solutions and elevates the human experience. Embark on a transformative journey of spirience, and discover how its experience can unlock a new dimension of peace, purpose, and prosperity in your life.

Technology marches on. Technology marches over us. Technology, child of science, alters the character of life with its yearly if not monthly updates, with its smartphones, its worldwide connectivity, its instant global communication — and now with its conversational chatbots and machine intelligence. Who knows what comes next? Within this tempest of innovation, how can the poor single soul not be forgotten?

Answer: The poor single soul had best honor its own lived experience, and embrace the spirit that has animated physical matter, and brought enlightenment, since before the first human cry. This bringing together, this tricky synthesis of science and spirituality, to hear “Spirience” tell it, will make the best path forward in a world beset by the whirlwind wrought by science, in which individuality is too often smeared into the facelessness of the collective.

The very title, a mashup of science and spirituality, suggests synergy between the two. And perhaps there is such a thing. It’s not as if thinkers have never thought about this intersection. Books like “Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance,” “Lila” and “Shopclass as Soulcraft” have tried to bridge the supposed gap between science and spirituality, often with great success.

“Spirience” by V.I. Lakshmanan et al. approaches the divide from an Eastern perspective — or should I say an Eastern perspective at long last! — as its authors hail directly from the channels of Indian spirituality and science. It has always seemed to me that Asia, that great hotbed of spiritual thought, has generally kept mum on the scientific half of the science-spirit dichotomy, that it has usually emphasized the inner as opposed to the outer worlds. But here indeed we have an Indian scientist as one of the authors.

A lot of the book works as a survey of 21st-century life, with emphasis on the wonders of technology and particular emphasis on the woes. Remember your inner self, the authors seem to say, or be lost in the storm unfolding.

As a reminder to keep one’s head spiritually above the fray, “Spirience” does an admirable job, whether you are a spry young aspirant to riches or a doddering senior in search of meaning.

But one finds also plenty of sound instruction for running a good life, for becoming the individual in whom the rational and the spiritual have reached agreement, for being open and ethical and intelligent. There are quotations from Albert Einstein and many Hindu swamis.

The ultimate message is that science and spirituality are not contrasts but complements, and each should be shown its rightful respect throughout the conduct of life. All told, “Spirience” will make a great addition to your care-of-the-soul shelf.

Excellent book ... An eye opening journey showing why we need spirituality along with science to achieve real solutions to life's problems. Science alone can't give us all the solutions; a mix of both is essential for broadening our mindset. Definitely hope to see a series of these books by these authors
