Double Play

Rate this book
Playboy centerfielder J.D. Shaw has made a sport out of juggling multiple women, or as he likes to say, temporary playmates. So when J.D.’s reputation for booze and loose women jeopardizes his major league contract with the New York Federals, he simply makes a deal with voluptuous Catrina Hiett to scam his new boss by posing as a couple deeply in love. But just as J.D.’s baseball career is taking off, former lover Halee McCarthy appears as the new girl in charge of Federal Charities, with an office down the hall, an apartment across the courtyard, and a bed J.D. keeps waking up in. With a jealous Catrina threatening to expose J.D.’s shoulder injury to the press, and a Chicago gang threatening to kill Halee over her pending adoption, J.D. finds himself caught in a double play that could end his major league career and leave his secret longing for hometown roots unrealized.

I was impressed with how this plot was set up. There was the main story which was a baseball player, J.D. Shaw. My my my, JD Shaw had a reputation of being a stud and a great ball player. No matter what he did, who he did, or what he drank, the guy was up at 5am for practice. His life was the New York Federals and nursing his passion for woman and booze. The day he signs a contract he injures his shoulder. He is in a bad spot and plays through the pain. I can say with the help of booze and pain pills.

A few predicaments get JD and Catrina Hiett who is a party girl and daughter of a big figure involving the Federals. All she wants is status and to spend JD's cash. So when Halee McCarthy shows up at a fundraiser and makes his jaw drop, well the secret about them escapes. They were together and she caught him in bed with Catrina. Yikes the drama. I think the best was the unusual plot device for getting JD the girl, the contract, the respect, wait no spoilers it is a journey you wont want to miss.

What kept me going was the plot and of course the drama. It is very well written with a lot of information about contracts, baseball players, scandal and love. What makes him tick is the fact that he wants the farm where he grew up. So he play with pain for a dream. I say read it and enjoy! When you are done read more from this talented author.

Fairly well written, but has some editing issues. This is a stand-alone book. 2.5 stars, rounded up.

I had a few issues with how the story was constructed. The book is almost entirely dialog driven, and often I felt like I was entering the middle of a conversation and struggling to catch up. Some of the accents made the dialog feel a little over-the-top with the country-boy-gone-pro theme, and I've never met anyone from Oklahoma who talks like that. . . although I guess I've heard some Oklahoma country singers with pretty thick accents. In any case, I don't think it contributed much to the story.

The other significant issue is the adoption storyline. I found the entire thing to be completely implausible. I know several people who've adopted children and what's described in the book would never happen. Literally impossible. Since this isn't a fairy tale, it detracts from the story.

The family and friends are supportive and believable, but there are a lot of very unlikeable people in this story -- namely the agent and owners, as well as the criminal family of the baby. In reality, those categories of people do get a lot of negative press, so maybe their actions are believable, but they're pretty cruel. The introduction of a pair of gay potential BFFs seemed like it would add some humor, but they ended up basically being the babysitters. . . which is also a little unrealistic. The fabulous gay couples I know don't putter around home waiting to take care of someone else's crying baby.

The plot is complicated, but at its core, very sweet with the country-boy sort of sweeping in and rescuing the girl from many issues, big and small. The romance is very PG-13. There's some sex, but nothing is very explicit.

There's a fair amount of baseball in the book, so if you're a fan of this sport, you may enjoy it more than I did.
