Cultural narratives are largely dominated by the stories of the elites, but folk tales give us a glimpse of the ordinary. So when I turn to these stories, I find myself diving into a personal, close-knit world of a culture. I have grown up on a healthy dose of local folk tales, and with time began exploring those from other regions. Japan had been largely absent in this regard (apart from some tales of the Shinigami), until now.

This book brings together several stories from Japan that echo how oral folk tales play the role of a teacher and of cultural propagation. I found myself remembering some of the stories I have read before from other cultures, warning of wrongs and praising moral uprightness. Every story shows a different aspect of everyday Japanese life while conveying a sense of message.

This collection is just perfect for anyone who likes light reads, travels around with books, hasn't read about Japanese culture in depth, or is looking for a gift for a young reader. The language flows easily, and the illustrations make the experience very visual. The book is not intimidating, but warm and welcoming. The short stories mean that it's easily accommodated amidst a busy schedule. Sometimes you might find stories that echo folk tales you already know. In the end, you realise how connected we are as humans, despite our perceived differences.

My only issue with this book was the absence of glossaries or word meanings. As someone who isn't very aware of Japanese cultural components, some words didn't make a lot of sense until I looked them up or tried prising them from the context. As such, a glossary or meanings in the form of footnotes would have been greatly helpful.

The book is immensely accessible, with a large print that helps both young readers and those with visual challenges. This aspect of the book really caught my attention. Aesthetic-wise, the book does a great job capturing the essence of Japan.

I recommend this book especially for young children or new readers who might find thick novels intimidating. This is a perfect gateway into the world of reading.

"A ruined temple stood in a lonely wood. All about it was a track less forest. The huge trees waved above it, and the leaves in the thicket whispered about it. The sun goddess seldom shone upon it with her light."

Ever since my husband took me to Japan last year, a part of me has remained there, in the midst of its tranquil beauty and rich traditions. Kyoto, in particular, has a special place in my heart—it's the kind of city I could see myself calling home one day. There's something about its ancient temples, stunning gardens, and the serene pace of life that feels deeply nurturing to the soul.

When I received this book, my joy was immeasurable. It was as though I had been given a piece of my own memories, a beautiful bridge between the present and the past. I savored each page, each story, and every single illustration. The book took me back to the days of our trip in such a vivid way, filling me with nostalgia and a renewed love for Japan. The way the book captured the essence of Japanese culture only deepened my admiration for it. The stories were not just stories—they were windows into a world that I long to understand more deeply, and I can't wait to explore more Japanese literature.

I must also give a huge shoutout to the illustrator who brought the stories to life with their stunning images. The artistry in this book was simply captivating. I was especially drawn to the beautiful depictions of the Geisha, a figure I had the honor of dressing up as during our trip. The costumes in these illustrations took me right back to those moments, and I couldn’t help but stare at the intricate details of the garments and the elegance they exude. There’s something timeless about the way Japanese fashion intertwines with tradition, and this book perfectly captured that beauty.

The ever-consistent themes of these stories- endurance, loving-kindness, reverence toward nature, and humility- are the things that challenge and inspire readers. The collection reflects how folktales act as vessels for passing wisdom across generations and cultures.

The book really manages to render traditional oral storytelling attractive eloquent and yet crisply engaging, transporting the reader in beautiful and fascinating settings gives each word an edge. As a kid I have been obsessed with the Travel and Living Channel. I watched and got to know the most beautiful places all around the world but no other place fascinated me like Japan.
The culture, the history, the people, the food, everything seems so appealing. So it is quite obvious that I have a certain bias to this Collection of Folk stories from Japan.

Thirty Best Folk Tales from Japan by @bee.books is one of my most cherished books.
This book felts like my childhood, it smelt like nostalgia, and it took me to my dream destination across it's time and age.
It's almost magical how some stories from a distant land across the seas were so much similar to the tale we Indian kids have grown up listening to.
These stories are highly reminiscent of the Panchatantras and Jatakas we are familiar with and I think that adds to the charm of the folk tales even more. Even though they are heavily regional, they are somehow universal too.
Some stories were heartfelt, others were exciting, and a few were simply there to make my heart ache in some unknown yet very familiar pain.

Ranging from the bravery of Samurais to the playfulness of cats, from fragrant cherrybloosm to harsh mountains, from real human emotions to fantastical myths, this book has something for everyone's taste.

The Goddess of Green Growing Things, The Single Lantern of Yamato, The Mountain Rose, The Laughing Dumpling and The Painter of Cats are some of my personal favourites from this collection.
(p.s it's filled with illustrations and we all love books with pictures, don't we?)

As someone who absolutely adores Japanese culture, this book was a treasure trove I didn’t know I needed. It’s a beautifully curated collection of Japanese folk tales that not only tells stories but also preserves the spirit and soul of Japan’s rich heritage. Every tale pulled me deeper into the world I’ve long admired—from mystical creatures and noble warriors to delicate lessons about nature, kindness, and honor.

The charming illustrations throughout added to the magic, almost like stepping into an old scroll painting or a Ghibli-style dream. I’ve always longed to experience authentic Japanese folk tales, and this book felt like it was made for that purpose. Reading it was like walking through a shrine garden—peaceful, layered, and filled with quiet wonder.

Some of the stories that stayed with me are The Phantom Cats, The Single Lantern of Yamato, The Princess of the Sea, and The Mountain Rose. Each offered something different—The Mountain Rose felt like a whispered poem, while The Goblin Tree wrapped me in eerie atmosphere. The Princess and the Fox Baby had that soft, magical charm I associate with childhood fairy tales.

If you love Japanese folklore, or if you’ve ever been curious about it, this collection is the perfect gateway into that world. It felt like a gentle, respectful embrace from the culture I hold so close to my heart.

I truly enjoyed this anthology. Thirty Best Folk Tales from Japan collects some of the most enchanting and intellectually stimulating stories in Japanese folklore. The stories are rich in wisdom, charm, and occasionally a bit of mischief. What I truly enjoyed was how every story feels distinct but still retains that special quality of Japanese storytelling. Some are touching, others surprisingly dark, but all of them leave a mark. I always loved Japan, its culture and stories. And this book strengthens my love for Japanese stories

The style of writing is straightforward but engaging, making it ideal for children and adults alike. I did wish there was a little more background on some of the stories—such as where exactly they are from—but that's just a minor quibble. Otherwise, a great collection that transports you into the rich, imaginative world of Japanese folklore. I would highly recommend this to anyone who likes fairy tales, myths or just good stories. This can be a perfect book to gift too.

Thirty Best Tales of Japan especially takes into accounts of courage, lost love, bravery with the goddesses that exists in Japanese philosophy and the stories of samurai (soldiers), princesses of the magical world.

These folk tales have been written in a way of the old style english which would read perfect if are recited and every story doesn't have a happy ending or every character in the folk tale teaches you but rather the tales introduce you to realistic stories of a fisherman and my favourite are stories where the deceit of the mortal being is addressed and the aftermath of that deception is something that leaves you pondering.

Definitely pick up if you want to introduce yourself or someone else to a world of folk tales of a different country especially Japanese seeing so many readers are reading contemporary Japanese literature.

These tales will certainly introduce you to a much raw literature of Japan as they are Folk Tales.

Thirty Best Folk Tales from Japan | Anthology of Short Stories

Chaitali sand

4 out of 5 stars

Tales from Japan that linger softly in the heart.

picked up this book out of sheer curiosity—and it felt like stepping into a world of quiet, whimsical magic.

The collection brings together thirty folktales that are short, crisp, and packed with age-old wisdom. You'll find fox spirits, mountain gods, kind-hearted villagers, and mischievous tricksters—all wrapped in tales that carry universal truths. Some stories made me smile with their simplicity, others lingered longer with a deeper echo.

What I loved most was the nostalgic, fireside-storytelling vibe. It’s the kind of book you can dip into anytime—between chores, at bedtime, or on a quiet afternoon with chai. A gentle reminder that powerful stories don’t need to shout.

A heartfelt thank you to Bee Books Publishing for sending me this beautiful copy via the Read With Us Book Club.

This one’s going on my ‘comfort reads’ shelf.

Thirty Best Folktales From Japan

Japan is my favorite country because of its pristine cleanliness, cultural diversity, and breathtaking scenery. When I got the opportunity to read, I craved to know those wonderful folktales. I personally love Folktales more, as it gives a moral lesson to life in every story.

Likewise, these 30 stories were written with moral values for our lives. One thing major stories had was a kindness. My philosophy in life is “Be kind, and the kindness comes back to you in any form.” That perfectly fit in each story.

The titles were beautifully adopted in Japanese style in English headings. Every story has a beautiful illustration that was more perfectly suited to the story with each title. The story suits kids as well as adults. It was refreshing and poignant to dwell on reading them. I have so many favorite stories from the book. It’s hard to choose one. My most favorite was “The Princess and the Fox Baby.”

If you are looking for something cheerful, cultural, and moral values in a story. Then, this is for you to pick now.
