I enjoyed reading this collection. The variety of stories not only kept me engaged but also sparked deeper thought on the possibilities of science. There was also a delightful element of surprise in each story.
As someone with a background in science, I found myself particularly drawn to the genre, but I believe anyone who enjoys science fiction will appreciate the rich diversity in this anthology.
A pinch of everything from everyone you ever wanted to read.
None of us can deny that picking up a classic is a very daunting task and no matter how desperately we wanted to pick up that big fat book by H.G.Wells or Jules Verne, you hesitated. Well, if you didn't, good for you but I did. And nothing could have been better than this compilation of short stories by the greatest science fiction authors to introduce me to this nerve wrecking, heart thumping and goosebumps inducing world. . We start with Nathaniel Hawthorne and end with Charles Beaumont, en route Jules Verne, H.G.Wells, H.P Lovecraft, Mark Clifton and many others. It's a diverse range of stories from authors sprawling across centuries, ideas and opportunities. . My favourites from the collection had to be A Thousand Deaths by Jack London, Mellonta Tauta by Edgar Allan Poe & In the Walls of Eryx by H.P. Lovecraft. These stories are thought provoking, questions your ideas of the ways of this world and makes you believe in the power of imagination that eventually leads to innovation.
The only underwhelming aspect of this collection is the lack of contemporary stories, but if you want to start with the greatest and finest, this is the perfect book for you. Highly recommended ✨
THE WORLD OF SCIENCE FICTION edited by Souvik Chakraborty.
🌸 Bee Books 🌸 Science Fiction 🌸 736 pages
Science Fiction is can of worms. You think you are going to read just one book, and one story and multiple alternate imaginary theories later, you find yourself on reddit trying to figure out if the logic in the story made sense. My first ever science fiction was The Martian and later on The hichthikers guide to the galaxy which are both amazing reads. However, I wanted to read more by classic authors. I have seen the movies, but books are so much more right?
The world of science fiction is a collection of sci-fi stories written by renowned authors like Jules Verne, H. g Wells, Edgar Allan Poe, Rudyard Kipling, H P lovecraft, Jerome K Jerome and Arthur Conan Doyle but also so many authors that I had never heard of. The stories combines the scientific knowledge and imaginative exploration, inspiring the genre's focus on adventure, mystery and technology.
Coming to the stories, the stories were carefully chosen and presented in a way that kept the flow of the book gripping. You would want to continue reading after one chapter wrapped up. The language was simple and easy to understand. The stories are short making it engaging. Although it's a heavy book with nearly, 736 pages, but reading it was a breeze. I didn't even realise how quickly I was 5 chapters in the book.
Also, let's talk about that cover. It's gorgeous. It's a straight up cover buy for me, the stories inside are just the cherry on the cupcake. I found loving so many of the stories like- . A Thousand Deaths, Professor Jonkin's cannibal plant, Cool Air, Miracle and A Thousand and second tale of scheherazade. As a huge marvel fan and sci-fi fan, this book was an absolute delight to read. Must recommended to beginners and lovers of Science fiction as well.
"The World of Science Fiction" by Souvik Chakraborty is an anthology filled with the best specimens of the science fiction genre, and it has been compiled delightfully. This volume of science fiction stories consists of several stories by many authors, as well as selected pages of some eminent fiction writers such as: Jules Verne, H. G. Wells, Stanley G. Weinbaum, H. Beam Piper, Henry Kuttner and many more. The clever intent of every story entreats the reader to dream of the time to come and contemplate humanity and its creation, its scope and limits.
It’s an anthology, so naturally, there is bound to be a variation in the writing style. Some contributors were long linear and descriptive like Jules Verne or H.G. Wells while others were more contemporary and up to the point. However, this is a different case, for those who enjoy complex narratives and intricate imagining, as well as simple stories without much embellishment.
All in all, It is primarily a compilation of science fiction, hence contains futuristic stories such as advanced technology, Exploration of space, Time travelling and other similar imaginations. The pace of the stories differs depending on the individual styles of the authors. Some stories come with melodramatic situations that keep the reader in a faster momentum, while there are some that are more philosophic.
'The World of Science Fiction' is such a genre book that no science fiction reader can afford not to read. Providing a rich harvest of tales in which science and imagination work hand in hand, if you like to think of ways in which humans will innovate in the years to come, this book will surely please you.
To be very honest, almost every one of us have had those thoughts of what if technology takes over the world, or what if Star Wars was actually real. Science Fiction as a genre has been a milestone in literature, moving solely with the insatiable hunger of human creativity. But one thing where science fiction scares the general public is that the books are very thick. Souvik Chakraborty does a very angelic work: he curated some of the best short stories written by prestigious authors like H. G. Wells, Jerome K. Jerome, Jules Verne, and many more. Dr. Heidegger's Experiment by Nathaniel Hawthorne is about a doctor who claims to have been sent water from the Fountain of Youth. This very first story of the anthology threw me off board with its brilliant plot. The Los Amigos Fiasco by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, that is about Duncan Warner, a murderer, train robber and road agent who was sentenced to death by electricity and how it all turns to a great mess. I was pleasantly surprised when I got to know that Jerome K. Jerome had written a science fiction story. His story, The Dancing Partner is about a mechanical genius who builds the ideal lady's dancing partner and it all does not end well. Souvik Chakraborty did a great job with the editing and curation of the stories, in a manner that this book is a memorable anthology. The editor's note in the beginning was absolutely beautiful and connected me more to the purpose of the anthology. The World of Science Fiction is a must read for the fans of science fiction, those who want to get in the genre, and in a very general sense, for anyone who enjoys beautiful literature.
Science fiction nerds, this is your one-stop solution for a handy collection of great sci-fi stories. Boasting of the biggest names in the genre, the book brings you works by HG Wells, Jack London, Frank L Pollock, Lovecraft, Kipling, Doyle, and more. The familiar names and their new stories was what made me the happiest.
It goes without saying that these stories are by the GOATs of the genre, and so making a review on each of them is futile. Most of them are straightaway 5 stars, so the curation of the book would be one of the things I'll talk about. Keeping the known authors makes the book super attractive, and bringing forth their stories beyond the most popular ones makes the book worthwhile.
Another pointer about this book is being able to travel with it. I carry books with me a lot, and usually reading a novel can be daunting while a tour. This one has shorter tales and makes it easier to read with the broken up reading spree. The various stories also lets you choose what you want to read if one of the stories isn't working. The book is not too insanely thick, just heavy enough to fit into your bag and sit snugly.
I also want to talk about the Dune vibes on the cover. The style of illustration, the colours, and the detailing just make it perfect! If I spotted this in a bookstore, I'm definitely gonna pick it up. It's a great read for people who aren't in with long novels but enjoy a good speedy read. It's also a great book to collect and pick up once in a while.
“Science fiction is a kind of literature that embodies the highest aspirations of human race”.
Science fiction is a genre is very intriguing. Walking the thinnest of margins between a thriller and a fantasy, they write of things that are practically possible, but we just don’t have the equipment. Yet. Boasting an impressive collection of 40+ stories and a hefty weight to it, this book doesn’t disappoint. The author has done meticulous work to carefully curate this collection so that it focuses on more than one aspect of science fiction.
While some of them are a good blast from the past, some of them are rather forgotten stories that hold as much punch as the novels written by the same author. This seamless transition from one story to other seems like an experience which was limited just to shows or sitcoms. This is one of the things which you can binge read. With stories written by Kipling, Verne, and many others, the book is a simmering pot of larger than life settings set in a more real environment. A reintroduction to our classic authors is what this book feels like.
All in all, the book is a solid collection with a lot of re reading value. So dive in the world of “what if?” Keep your eyes open for the anomalies though, as every reading missed is an opportunity for something far worse than you hoped for.

1. Dr. Heiddeger’s Experiment by Nathaniel Hawthorne: Tickles the funny bone. Good social commentary. Not sure if it really fits in a sci-if collection though.
