Two Worlds

Two Worlds represents an attempt to overcome the boundaries between science fiction and fantasy.

The story is set in a remote future, on an Earth very different from today: the Chimeric development has taken human evolution on strage paths, paths that have led to the advent of other races; hybrid species that possess in their modified DNA genes coming from birds and fishes.

The presence of a mysterious Tower of Seeds - a long forgotten place - will rekindle in some people new hopes and the desire, perhaps utopian, to restore the ancient environmental balance with planet Earth.

Francesco Verso (Bologna, 1973) is a multiple-award Science Fiction writer and editor. He has published: Antidoti umani, e-Doll, Nexhuman, Bloodbusters, Futurespotting and I camminatori (made of The Pulldogs and No/Mad/Land). Nexhuman and Bloodbusters have been published in Italy, US, UK and China. I camminatori will be published by Flame Tree Press as The Roamers in Spring 2023. He works as editor of Future Fiction, scouting and translating the best SF from 12 languages and more than 30 countries. He’s the Honorary Director of the Fishing Fortress SF Academy of Chongqing. In un futuro che rieccheggia il passato, mirabile connubio tra due mondi lontani della fantasia, la fantascienza e la fantasy, l'evoluzione umana ha scelto strade imprevedibili, allontanandosi dalla via che conosciamo. Sorprendentemente, questi fantastici "scherzi" dell'evoluzione, dimostrano un'umanità assai più profonda e potente di quella attuale, finendo per darci una lezione. Una speranza, rara nel genere post-apocalittico, in un racconto che è somma di riuscite ribellioni letterarie, soprattutto nella maestria con cui il genere fantascientifico viene superato, pur rispettandone con maestria i canoni e l'estetica. Bello, bellissimo, mi ha ricordato l'Angela Carter di Heroes and Villains.

A remote future with echoes of an ancient past in which evolution found unpredictable paths to survive in an extreme world. But beyond their mutation, the new species reveal an incredible humanity, such deep to give us a great lesson on what humans should be and behave (and they are not).

A surprise: this short novel is a surprise in every single page. Because it's across two genres (fantasy and sci-fi), because it echoes Heroes and Villains by Angela Carter but goes beyond in imagination, because it's a mindset break in the post-apocalipt literature. A sort of Manifesto of the italian Future Fiction. .

Scrivere questo commento sarà piuttosto difficile perché, in tutta onestà, non ho molto da dire. Un racconto brevissimo che non riesce a creare una storia abbastanza interessante e intrigante.
Non sono riuscita ad apprezzare i personaggi, che secondo me sono più abbozzati che delineati, e non mi sono affatto appassionata alla loro ricerca del luogo in cui sono conservate le sorti dell’umanità. Un vero peccato, perché l’idea di nuove razze sviluppatesi da quella umana è sempre intrigante e foriera di idee e riflessioni.
Personalmente, non ho apprezzato particolarmente anche lo stile dell’autore. E’ indubbiamente riconoscibile e personale, cosa sempre apprezzabile visto che ogni scrittore dovrebbe avere una sua “voce” – tuttavia, non è nelle mie corde. Non è particolare, arzigogolato o altro: semplicemente, non mi ha trascinata nella storia. Forse anche per questo non sono riuscita ad appassionarmici.
