The adventures begun in the Feyland trilogy continue, where a high-tech computer game becomes a gateway to the treacherous Realm of Faerie.

Rich-boy gamer Royal Lassiter lives on easy mode—until everything falls apart. Dark faeries are plotting to invade the mortal world, his controlling mom has turned home into enemy territory, and he can’t deny his irresistible attraction to newcomer Brea, despite the danger lurking in her mysterious eyes.

Forced to undertake a perilous mission for the Dark Queen of Faerie, Brea Cairgead finds living among humans and hiding her true nature as one of the fey folk a fearsome challenge—especially when her emotions prove all too vulnerable to a certain human boy. Torn between impossible loyalties, she must serve her queen... though it may cost her heart.

FEYGUARD 1 and 2

I was absolutely thrilled with books 1+2. Even though I am 65 years old I love stories of fairies and lore. I soon will be reading book 3. Keep writing about fantasy it takes your mind off everything else. I would recommend this book highly for teens but I'm sure anyone who likes fantasy will enjoy this trilogy. Thank you for a wonderful read

[Full disclosure: I received a free ebook from Anthea Sharp in exchange for an honest review.]

I’ve never really liked Roy as a character in Anthea Sharp’s novels, both Feyland (the original series) and Feyguard (this new spinoff series) so I’ll admit I was a little reluctant to read things from his point of view for a whole book. It’s a testament to Anthea Sharp’s writing talent that once I actually got going, I really didn’t mind him so much.

Roy is the kind of person that hides his true self behind a facade, both at school and at home because people would disapprove. In the case of school there’s the usual peer pressure to stay cool but at home his mum really is more of a ruthless CEO type rather than the type of mum who would approve of Roy’s forays into art. In a situation like that, it’s easy for him to fall back on the rich playboy facade rather than expose his innermost self. Into all this, enter Brea Cairgead, a fey girl sent by the Dark Queen to make more humans susceptible to falling into Feyland so that they may live. She can see beyond his facade even while she creates her own, so when they start falling in love it makes for an interesting relationship dynamic.

At the same time this book isn’t just about Roy as a character. We see Jennet and Tamlin and some of the other Feyguard as well, but it sort of continues the story of how the fey are desperate to bring unsuspecting humans into their world. In a way I feel sorry for them since most of the mortal realm doesn’t believe in them and their very survival is in peril because of that. However, their methods don’t lend much sympathy and in the end the fey are capricious and often quite vicious so I can’t feel too sorry for them.

This is in many ways a character driven novel, but as you can probably guess there’s also a pretty interesting plot as well. There was nothing all that unexpected in the plot until the end, where there’s a huge twist. I don’t want to give too much away, but it solves the problem of Roy and Brea’s fey-human attraction in a brilliant if semi-tragic way. I’m a sucker for some portrayals of star-crossed love and this is definitely one of them.

All in all, Anthea Sharp’s second book in the Feyguard series was even better than I expected. Roy still gave off rich playboy vibes in the beginning of the novel but by the end he’s actually a pretty nice guy. So there you have it: magic, character development and a pretty fast-paced plot. I certainly can’t ask for more than that.

I give this book 5/5 stars.

Sharp draws you back into the magical world of Feyland from the very first sentence. Adventure & excitement abound in a fantasy world like no other. Sharp melds the human world with that of the Seeilie & Unseelie courts in a manner that allows you to see them coexisting naturally in our world. The implications of this make the story all the more exciting. Throw in the well plotted out adventures and quests that he characters find themselves on and you have one unforgettable tale. She also defines what needs defining without slowing down the fast forward pace of the story. Sharp allows her readers full immersion into this intricate world while taking them on the ride of a lifetime.

I feel like I really know each of the main characters in this novel intimately. I especially loved the growth that we see in Roy in this novel. He is still the spoiled rich kid that we`ve come to know and tolerate, but he`s really coming into his own now. You can see the personal growth that he`s undergone throughout the series, and now he`s becoming a much more rounded and grounded individual. He`s someone you can (almost) like now.

This was a beautifully put together novel that I wouldn`t hesitate to recommend to fantasy lovers of all ages. The world that Sharp presents to her readers is breathtakingly beautiful and extremely easy to fall in love with. I definitely couldn`t put this one down even for a second.

Please note that I received a complimentary copy of this work in exchange for an honest review.

A fine addition

A fine addition

Royal is an adventure-filled story with sweet romance intertwined. The fate-crossed lovers bring a pathos to the tale. While it is romantic, I can't help but feel that more needs to come. A teenage love enduring such separation will fade with time...thus opening the way for further adventure. This is a good series, even for much olderr readers.

Sissy: Anthea Sharp draws us back into the magical world of Feyland with another beautiful novel of romance and adventure. I dare you to look at the cover and not be drawn into the story.

Bubby: I am always so excited when a new Feyland book comes out! This one shows us a whole new side of Roy Lassiter, the boy we hate to like. He actually has some depth. Who knew? Read full review at www.bubblebathbooks.net

Love this book. It was great to see a different side to Roy than the one that was shown in Feyland. I really hope there are more Feygurard books to come.

I’m in the hospital and pretty much bored out of existence between endless bouts of PT. Luckily I’m a book-aholic. Even more luckily I can use my iPad to read and have a handy hubby (very useful, that) to dictate reviews to (as I cannot type currently). I’ve used this time to totally binge on what I think are all of the Feyland books by Anthea Sharp that I haven’t read yet. And by binge I mean a two-day nonstop read-fest (other than eating and the afore-mentioned massively time consuming PT) of the remaining five of these books I hadn’t already actually read.

First up in my binge was Royal: Feyland Book 5 (Feyguard 2). Frankly I think you need to at least read Spark: Feyland Book 4 (Feyguard 1) before this one (though really, this series is so good that if you’ve not read any of it yet I urge you to start with its first book, The Dark Realm). As for Royal, this book has everything that makes the series do great. Interaction between gamer setting in our world and Feyland setting. Great characters in wealthy gamer Royal Lassiter (whose character is well developed with his family life issues) and fey Brea Cairgead. Great romance and wonderful conflict for Brea with her conflict of feelings for Royal and loyalty to the Dark Queen of Faerie, and a great resolution. Add in great writing (I feel like adding an “of course” here) and a great supporting cast. Really just what any fab of this series could want.

I’m going to review the other books (Marny, How To Babysit A Changeling, Tales of Feyland and Faerie & The Faerie Girl and Other Tales) separately but here’s a clue: all easily five stars.

I just cannot get enough of reading about the realm of the fey! The game of Feyland is too intriguing and the fae realm is described so beautifully one never wants to leave. However the dark court and it's wicked queen is not a good place for humans to wander into! This book continues right where Brea's tale had left off and this time we follow Brea on her Gea to entice humans into the realm of faerie however Brea meets fellow students at westview high and for the first time in her life she is accepted by friends. She also falls in love with Roy Lassiter one of the feyguard team so she is prepared to sacrifice everything to protect her human friends! This book is full of love, loyalty, great friends, courage and above all magic and the magical creatures of the dark court. There is also a great battle scene between the Feyguard and the evil beings of the Dark court and even though the book has a very sad ending there is still a ray of hope because after all anything can happen in the world of the Fae! Dying to read the next book in the Feyguard series.

The story continues from Book 4.5 with Brea's reluctant quest for sacrificial victims to mark for the Dark Queen. Royal is Roy Lassiter, the spoiled rich boy turned Feyguard by his experiences in Feyland Books 1-3. He feels a strange fascination with Brea, who is herself affected by Roy. Jennet, Tam, and Marny all feel Brea is not quite the foreign exchange student she claims to be. Roy especially is becoming bewitched by Brea. This turns into an emotional love story, with Roy evolving from a rich, spoiled, entitled snob to a tender, caring, true friend in love with Brea. Brea returns his love and is willing to sacrifice herself for him. I loved this Book, especially as part of the Feyland Book 1-6 Bundle.

Would you do anything for true love?

This story is another fabulous offering from Anthea Sharp. As with her other works, this story is well written and captivating. Can a fey creature and a human share enduring love? None have done so successfully thus far. But Royal is special. Possibly more than mere mortal. Bursting with action and adventure this book keeps you on the edge of your seat. A must read.

A song of love.....though not the recognized kind. I was surprisingly astonished that Roy was able to overcome his self indulgence and fall for a not-quite-human girl. The ending was, quite honestly, unexpected. Not the usual fare from Anthea Sharp. I'm going straight on to Book 3. Watch this space.

Different take on immersive gaming

I have only read this book, so I don't have any sense of where it fits into the series. As a stand alone story it is quite captivating and enjoyable , with a very different take on the interaction between the human and the fey world. Maybe I should see what book one is like.

A really enjoyable fantasy novel that can be read as a standalone book but is part of a series about a virtual reality game which, unknown to its human developers, provides a real entry into a magical land of powerful fairies and can also provide a portal for fairies into this world. Thoroughly recommended for young adults (and the young at heart) who enjoy suspending their disbelief.

A Somewhat Different Feyland Story

Instead of strictly winning or losing, whether in combat or romance, this book took a course that really keeps a reader thinking, wondering how it could turn out alright. While the ending may not be the all rosy ending expected by some, it feels right all the same. This is really a good book and fun series.

Royal fun with the Feyguard

I enjoyed this story, nothing like a trip into Feyland, it made me smile anytime as I read. Towards the end I wanted to stop, but just had to keep reading.

This story didn't hold my attention as some of the other feyland books. It was nice to revisit the characters but this story lacked depth and purpose. Royal falls in love with a fey girl who is actually a fish. It just was odd. The adventures into feyland were short and choppy within the story.

I love Anthea Sharp. I have been captured and held prisoner to everyone of her books I have read. And I have read all of them except the short stories. I have read her Feyland series and now, all of the available Feyguard series.

These books are so full of magic, wonder, and adorable love stories. It is a YA novel revolving around teenagers but it does not focus on the sex life of these teens, which is a nice change. I read YA novels to get away from all the sex talk that litters most other novels. It’s okay every once in a while, but sometimes I just need a break from it.

Synopsis:

Royal is a rich kid. His mom is the CEO of VirtuMax, a company responsible for the best gaming platform and also a game called Feyland. Royal and his friends work together as the Feyguard, a group of gamers that know the truth about Feyland; it’s not always just a game.

While Royal is happy with his friends he can’t help but to be a little envious of his friends Jennet and Tam, who have fallen in love with one another. Royal is starting to believe that he is not meant to fall in love.

A new girl starts at school and Royal is instantly interested. While Royal is falling head over heels for the new girl, his friends are questioning her strange quirks that remind them a lot of the fairy in Feyland. Royal is blinded by his infatuation, but his friends will have his back the whole way.

Roy’s Friends now have to figure out who the new girl is and if she is a threat to the world before it’s too late.

Personal Opinion:

I loved this novel. Of course, I am obsessed with fairies. This book works for me. You have romance, adventure, action…everything you need for a good book. I love the aspect of a fairy falling in love with a human and vice versa. I also enjoyed how Brea (the fairy whose name I forgot to tell you) tries to figure out the unknown world. She is a fairy, thrust into the human world with no guide. It was fun to watch her struggle to understand things that we take for granted. It also made me wish for a more simple life.

The only issue I had was the ending. It made sense, I just wanted something nicer for the ending. Though, I admit, if it had been any thing different I probably would have complained that it was out of context and didn’t follow the rest of the story. I just want super happy endings for everyone. I can’t help my hopeless romantic side.

Rating:

I have actually decided to stop rating stories. I tend to give most things 5 stars…because there is always something I love about the book that overshadows what I didn’t like about it.

To Read or Not To Read?

You should read this if you love stories of fairies. You could read it without reading any of Feyland or the first Feyguard book. You might get a little lost, but not enough to make too much of a mess. Though, I would suggest reading at least the first Feyguard book. If I am being honest, I think that if you enjoy fairies you should start with the Feyland series and work your way down the line.

Royal is a book in the Feyland series by Anthea Sharp. It's the story of one of the main characters Royal Lassiter, a high school student, who's mom is the CEO of Virtumax, a Corporation that makes sim gaming systems and their new game is called Feyland.

Royal and his friends, Tam, Jennet, Marny, Spark, and Aran , are champion level gamers. Feyland it turns out is a portal into the Realms of the Dark Court and the Bright Court, both dangerous places to be if you are human. They discover that while you embark on your quests within the game, the things that happen to you have a carry over effect into the real world.

Royal, in past stories, seemed to have been playing the game of life on EASY. Shortcuts, help, and artifice seemed to be his stock in trade, but his friendship with the rest of the Feyguard has matured him a bit, as has his meeting with new student Brea Cairgead. Brea is the new girl in town allegedly from Ireland, but she has a mysterious quality that says there is more to her than meets the eye.

I really enjoyed every bit of this whole series, it's not just a series that YA's would like. Everyone can go along on this ride. Royal's story was nice twist in an already interesting world. I recommend the whole series to anyone in Jr. High to High School and adults. It's a fun world with a lot of action and twists and turns.

[I received a complimentary copy of this book in exchange for an honest review]

Spark was a more attractive character than Royal (Roy) Lassiter in Feyland and in the first Feyguard book. Though Roy behaved honorably in the end, he remained rather self-centered. So I was curious to see what a story featuring him would be like. To my surprise, I liked this book even more than Feyguard 1: Spark.

Roy is made more human and engaging through his sympathy and love for Brea, an inhabitant of the Dark Realm send by the Queen to lure mortals into the faerie realm. Despite Brea’s magical skills, she finds everything unfamiliar as a young girl in this new world and learns that the mortals are surprisingly compassionate and understanding.

Roy is also often surrounded by the other main characters (in contrast to Spark’s solo ventures into Feyland in the first book), which helps keep the story complicated and interesting.

Do NOT read the Yeats poem in the back matter until you have finished reading the story, to avoid premature knowledge of the premise of the ending. The final complication, hinted at in an episode of the Spark story, is another truly moving example of Sharp’s loving use of traditional folklore elements.

Yet another hit by Anthea Sharp as the story of the fey guard emerge we find the human in each guard the strength , hope, dreams, and the heart of them, have captivated me from the first chapter in the series, and keep me on the hunt for each story that's to come.........Royal has a emptiness in his life .His home hardwired and lacking in warmth . A big empty shell of a mansion, a bitter mom, with her only thoughts of ambition, leaves him alone and wanting .......when a new girl enters school little does he know his life will be turned upside down, but falling in love will become more a challenge for poor Royal! As he find his heart has fallen for a fey and he will fight for that love .....What will become of the fated love? Of the dark fey, and Royals heart?.........COME AND READ WITH ME YOU'LL LOVE IT!!!

Roy has always been one of my favorite characters in this series - quite likely my favorite guy - so, needless to say, I loved reading about him. However...well, this wasn't the happy ending I was expecting. I still liked it, don't get me wrong, and I also like how it DIDN'T go how I expected...But it was just a bit of a surprise. Also, I wish there'd been a bit more closure with Roy's character OUTSIDE of the romance. Because there was a lot of stuff going on with him and I'm not sure he'd figured out anything more than he had at the beginning of the story. I would have given it five stars, if that had been addressed - that's how much I liked this book! (Maybe my favorite in this setting so far...)

Poor Royal! I want happiness for him so much given how he's grown up as a character - not something I thought I'd say! I wonder whether there is more story to tell here over time? Maybe the Queen's enchantment can be defeated? Still enjoying these primarily for the light fluffy reading and happily ever afters (even if this one was more qualified than that suggests).
