The information presented here will provide you with the tools you need to complete your musical productions. Revisit your archives of unfinished tracks and put the techniques you know together in a logical progression, while following a plan designed to meet your goals. In a workflow. That’s what this book is all about. It’s about separating left- and right-brained activities and making a plan that you will not only be able to follow, but will be able to execute completely in a timely manner. Follow a step-by-step guide to getting it done. And as we go through it, I’ll also share the production techniques I’ve picked up over the years that have had the greatest impact on my music.

If you follow this guide, you’ll start from a clean slate and work your way to a finished track in 10 days. That may or may not sound like the rapid-fire productivity you seek, but there’s one thing I must stress at the Take your time on your first journey through this book. Even if it only takes you an hour to finish the first day’s task, take your time and do it right. The idea is to put you in a specific mindset for the day’s goal and for you to execute it without distraction. (There are completely different mindsets for choosing samples, creating a bass riff, and mixing, for example.) Complete each task as best you can. Revisit your work later or even the next day and make it perfect before advancing to the next step. Move on only when you’re satisfied you’ve done your best. Again, don’t rush ahead. Take the entire 10 days to finish your project. It’s amazing how a little structure can help unleash your creativity. Find the method to your madness.

As you complete your first track using this method, you’ll begin to discover what works best for you and be on your way to understanding your optimal workflow. Then, after you’ve gone through it at least once, you can think about condensing your workflow into a shorter process and even work on multiple tasks at the same time. I can now effectively compose and produce a track in a day or two, and mix and master it in two more days. You’ll be able do this as well—maybe even more quickly.

You may also discover some things along the way that you still need to learn or improve upon. It’s important to look at these hurdles and imperfections as a means to get better. Pursue them as opportunities to grow. Tackle them relentlessly and learn as much as you can.
