Everyone has secrets… How far would you go to keep them hidden?
Kayla Williams knew all about secrets. She’s been burying it for the past sixteen years – and continues to do so. Though her parents and siblings were great, she’d torn herself away from them. She felt trashy, a waste. But more importantly, she doesn’t want harm coming to them.
Jason Gold was a family man. His parents were everything to him. But too many times he’d been taken advantage of because of his big heart. So he’d hardened that soft heart and pushed away the thoughts of having his own family.
When the Williams clan threw a graduation party, neither Kayla nor Jason knew how it would change them. Will Kayla trust a man again after all she has gone through? Will Jason let go of all the hard layers to protect the one woman who could complete him?

Hello Everyone,

I'm a mother, a sister, a friend, a blogger, a volunteer, and a reader. I'm also a writer.

Writing began as a way to deal with my life as a child. It wasn't easy, but sometimes transferring over to a fictional state it allowed it all to not weigh me down as much.

Reading was much the same thing. A way to escape everything for a little while. To relax from the day and unwind.

Outside of reading and writing, I love the outdoors, being creative, and cooking. I'm currently learning to play tennis (I'm not sure how successful that's going at the moment LOL). I hope to learn kickboxing next.

Here's to learning something new everyday!

“My secrets were mine to carry, not anyone else’s. I would not drag anyone else down with me. My secrets would remain that way for the rest of my life.”

This was a beautiful and an emotional read. A story about a girl who has survived 16 years of torture. Of pain and suffering. Taken on a journey or survival, healing, love and first….

First, if rape is a sensitive subject for you, this may not be a book for you. There are scenes where the main characters is raped and the author does an amazing job at keeping it real. Rape is a real thing that happens to woman like this character on a daily basis. It is not something be to taken lightly and I think this is a great story for even those who have suffered from this type of tragic event in their own past. I really believed the author kept things true and you truly feel the emotions from this poor character.

Kayla Williams has not been able to live a normal life. She has spent the last 16 years in fear, looking around corners, never being able to feel free. After one horrific night when she was 12 years old, her life was forever changed. With a big family of 7 brothers and 3 sisters, she isolated herself causing a strain on her family. She couldn’t tell them what was happening to her while they were in the house. She could be the reason for their hurt but she also couldn’t understand why they wouldn’t put a stop to this….why she was going through all of this with all these people to protect her…why couldn’t they see?

Jason Gold is a detective. He ends up at the Williams house for a party in honor of his parents. He is an extremely good guy…one of the few left. When he sees Kayla for the first time, his life is instantly changed…he can see the light shining through the dark clouds of his past. He has to know her but there is something about her, she is broken, and he is determined to be the one to fix her.

Their relationship starts off as business but even though Kayla has always been afraid of men, Jason has something about him that is able to make her relax, to feel, it scares the crap out of her but she knows she needs him, he is the only one that helps the nightmares go away, makes her feel safe. Jason too needs Kayla, with his past he never thought he could be in a relationship but Kayla is like no other.

“My eyes stayed on his and I lost myself in their amazing depths. Jason was my anchor in the stormy seas. I don’t know how he managed it, but he helped me find faith in others again…in men.”

I loved these two characters. What Kayla has gone through was so horrific. Years and years alone, living in fear, I hurt for her. I fell in love with Jason instantly. He was just such a man but also so loving and caring. I could feel how he cared for her. His emotions were so strong. He was the perfect person for Kayla. Protective, possessive, patient, loving, caring and hot. He always said the right things, always knew how to help Kayla, how to bring her back to the here and now when her past would catch up to her.

Kayla broke my heart. The way she felt so worthless, so broken and unworthy of a normal life. She didn't think anyone she have to deal with her problems. Even though she went through so much, she was such a strong woman. Not seeing that herself, Jason was right there to help, to make her know that her past is going to just that…past. She can have any kind of future she wants. She is a beautiful, strong and intelligent woman.

“I see you now before it has even been solved. I see beauty, strength and courage. When I look at you, I smile. I don’t see a victim of a heinous crime. I see a woman I would very much to get to know and earn her trust.”

Jason…such an amazing man. This read takes you on such an emotional ride. You want nothing more for Kayla to live, to feel free. There was so much pain in this book and so well written that you feel you are in the book. The two main characters capture you heart and you want to do anything to save them.

There were a few parts in the book that confused me. More like timelines but it doesn't affect anything too much. At one point it says weeks when I thought something was only a day, but, like I said, it wont really bother your reading.

There is a happy ending to this story but it continues in to book 2 Fantasy Attraction. This story is Carson’s story (Kayla’s brother). From what I read so far it is the trial for what has happened to Kayla.

I highly recommend this book. A great read and I am very excited to read more from this author.

I received an ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review.
This book was interesting for me, it bought up a lot of conflicting emotions. I knew the subject matter would be intense, because I read the intro by the author, which I might add I appreciated because if someone just read the synopsis, it does not really give you an insight into what the real theme of the book was about. When it comes to books that have issues of mental illness or emotional issues, I am very particular about the details. This is because I work in the mental health field, and my job is to reduce the stigma that people living with mental illness face on a daily basis, so I believe that it is very important to be correct and transparent when it comes to reporting and even writing fictional stories about people with mental illness. So...... through the whole book I just wanted to yell at everyone... "GET THE GIRL INTO THERAPY!!!!!!!!!!" There is no way someone who experiences that type of trauma for a long period of time, can not have severe psychological repercussions. At the very least PTSD would have been an issue for Kayla. And there is no way, if she was in therapy that the therapist would condone entering into an emotional/sexual relationship while this trauma is still untreated.

Okay I got that all out!!! Don't get me wrong I did enjoy the book, the writing style is great and I really think it is a brave thing to write about such an emotive topic. Unfortunately for some people this is their reality, their abuse is often perpetuated by different people, because people are able to identify their weakness and abuse it. This is really what Kayla's story is about. Reclaiming herself, and her life and standing up and saying 'I am not going to be a victim any more' and after experiencing years of abuse both physical and emotional this is an incredibly brave and extremely difficult thing to do. Although I did not agree with her relationship with Jason, I did think he was a great guy. Although he initially did not know about the abuse, he was able to look past this and know that Kayla was not defined by what happened to her, but she was a smart, strong brave woman who went through some pretty horrific things in her life. He was so understanding and so supportive in her journey. Not a big fan of Kayla's relationship with her family, I really through that her mother and sisters could have been more understanding, we didn't really get any interaction with them, Kayla seemed to spend more time with her brothers of father, which I thought was odd. I am intrigued about what path the next book will take, as I know there will be another book in the series. Will keep an eye out for it!!!!

Reading this broke my heart. Kayla was going through hell for the last 16 years of her life, she was repeatedly harassed and assaulted right under the nose of her family and she could not say anything. I could not believe it went on for so long. I really really felt for her. She was a terrified, and cautious woman who deserved a happy life. Then along came Detective Jason Gold, who fell for Kayla immediately. At first sight he knew he wanted Kayla to be his. He wanted to look after her and love her, but it was difficult. Kayla's fears almost always got the best of her.

In a way I also felt bad for Jason. I felt like Kayla was letting all these fears get the best of her, Apart of me wanted to slap Kayla and yell " You are strong, you can move on with your life!!" but she was put through so much for so long, so I understood.

I am excited to learn more about The Williams family, and I am glad this book ended on a good note! I would recommend this read to readers!

I had to take a couple of days to process this book. It is raw, painful and gut wrenching. Your heart instantly goes out to Kayla but then you're amazed but the strength and resilience she shows despite all of the crap she has to face. I can't wait to read more from this author. She writes in such a way that she pulls at your emotions, digging deep inside and making to reevaluate what is truly important in life. Well done.

A sad but compelling account of a rape victim tortured by her attacker for 16 years right under her families' nose. Found myself screaming in my own head for someone to rescue her or for her to tell someone. Enjoyed watching her finally trust others and tell her story. Nice to see her heal and grow and learn to love, while bringing her attacker to justice. A tale of strength and courage. A well written book about a very tough subject. Will be looking for more by P.J. Belden.

A powerful and emotional journey of abuse, healing, and finding love.

**4.5 Gut wrenching stars**
Kayla is twenty eight years old and is a successful veterinarian who comes from a huge family of brothers, sisters, and amazing parents. I absolutely loved a few of her brothers. Carson, Eli and Jake were my favorite. I wish we would have seen more of Jake but we did get more of Carson and has his own book Fantasy Attraction that has already been released.

Kayla has one of the biggest hearts you’ll ever see but she is hiding something. For the past sixteen years she has been abused, both sexually and physically. It started when she was just twelve years old and it completely changed her. A lot of times it happened in her own home but she was too scared to tell anyone. For all the years she lived with her family no one ever noticed what was going on with her. They saw her withdrawal but never really paid attention to why. She kind of holds that against them for not protecting her and she closes herself off from her family and others after that. She cannot stand the touch of another, especially a man.

Jason is a thirty year old detective. He is a good son and a good man. Jason has been hurt in his past which makes it hard for him to trust anyone. While running an errand for his mother, he comes across a beautiful woman running away and almost falling flat on her face. Rushing to break her fall he finds himself with an overwhelming feeling of fulfillment when she is in his arms and Kayla feels the same. It’s the first time she has been able to tolerate any type of touch from a man…even if it was only for a minute. It’s the longest she has let someone hold her in years.

Whenever he was around me, I felt different. My skin tingled, and my heart skipped beats. It almost felt like I couldn’t breathe. This was a reaction to a man I’ve never had before.

Jason is captivated by her beauty and whatever it is about her- he just can’t get her out of his mind. He is determined to know more about her. He can see something painful in the depth of her eyes and he has an overpowering desire to make the light shine from her eyes again.

If I knew she’d accept it, I would have pulled her into my arms and held her until all her worries were gone.

Both Kayla and Jason feel the pull towards each other but are hesitant to have a real relationship because of their pasts. Kayla is still being abused by this man who thinks he owns her and has threatened her and any man she dares to get close to. Kayla tries to avoid Jason to protect him but after her last brutal attack she decides that she has had enough. She is determined to end this no matter the cost and finds herself asking Jason for help. Jason is beyond sickened by what Kayla has had to endure in her past and is determined to do whatever it takes to protect her and take down the man behind her attacks.

Protective Love is a gut-wrenching story of abuse and rape. It goes into extreme detail of the acts and it is heartbreaking. The time Jason spends with Kayla he realizes that she is it for him. He will do whatever he has to do to have her. He knows her past and knows he needs to go slow with her and he is willing to wait as long as he needs to for her.

I swear Jason was so sweet and patient with her, not wanting to go too far have her go running scared. It’s hard for him though, every time he is around her he has an overwhelming desire to just hold her and touch her. Kayla is slowly becoming used to being around Jason. He makes her feel safe and protected but every time he touches her in the slightest way she freaks.

She wants nothing more than to be able to live a normal life and do what normal couples do and she knows that if that is ever possible for her…it is Jason that will be the one to help her do it. She is able to let her guard down in front of him a little and laugh and smile. Actual real laughs and reals smiles. It feels so foreign to her but it feels good. I loved how Jason could sense when Kayla was withdrawing and he would do the craziest things to take her mind off things. He was just so sweet and didn’t care what anyone thought of him as long as it made Kayla happy….it was worth it.

Jason is terrified that Kayla is going to end up associating him with her assaults being that he is so involved. It leaves hesitant to take things further emotionally because he knows she is the one person who can break him.

Everything is piling around Kayla and she feels like no matter what she does she will not get through this. She prays for death. She prays for her assailant to take her to the point where she won’t ever be able to wake up again. Everyone has a breaking point and Kayla may have reached hers. She is done putting others in jeopardy. She sees the pain Jason and her family are in because of things in her life and she just can’t take it anymore. She needs to leave, to cut everyone she cares about from her life. It’s the only way to protect them.

A story of horrific abuse, trust, faith and love will have you on the edge of your seat. There is more to the story than meets the eye and one twist and turn after another will make this a book you will not be able to put down.

There were a couple of things that were kind of weird for me in this book...first being that she lived with all that abuse for so many years and never said anything, but then one day she just decides to come clean??? Also, her family noticed a change but never 'investigated' it??? I agree that it is kind of unlikely but not impossible. Some people just hit a breaking point and decide enough is enough and just need to get it out. I've never been in that situation so I cannot judge someone if that is how they would act. I also think her being so angry at her family is misplaced because it went both ways. She could have told just as they should have asked what was wrong. And as far as the insta-connection...well that doesn't happen to often in real life but in books it happens all the time. Even though I had these 'issues' (if you could call them that) with this book I didn't feel necessary to mark lower for it because non of them are completely impossible to believe...at least for me and I really did enjoy the book. I've a few similar books and found this one to be a lot more believable and better written than some of the others.

This was a first time for me reading P.J. Belden and I have to say I was pleasantly surprised.
Add it to your TBR today.

“I want you to love away all my nightmares and scares. Give me a reason to not fear a touch, a kiss. Show me that when you love someone the act is more of a connection than domination. Make love to me now because you love me. Make love to me know because you need me; long for me.”

ARC kindly provided in exchange for an honest review.

Heartbreaking is the first feeling that comes to mind while I was reading this book.

Kayla is a survivor, she has been through more than most people go through in a life time. In her short 28 years she has been subjected to 16 years of abuse and rape, some of which take place at her family home, at the hands of her brother, Carson’s friend, Alex. Never telling a sole in those 16 years, Kayla has pushed her family to the side and believes that if she doesn’t confide in anyone, no one else can be hurt.

“I’m a hideous beast; a plaything for a sick and twisted guy. I have used so many excuses covering up for any visible marks on me. They have never been this bad. How can I hide this one? How can I make this one go away?”

A chance meeting at her family’s home after her abuser taunts her, she runs into Jason Gold, a detective.
Their instant connection takes them both by surprise. Kayla goes through life existing just getting through each day. When Kayla is attacked again, she breaks down and is at her lowest point in life and finally confides in her family. They give her the support and strength to report all her attacks. At the police station the detective assigned to Kayla's case is Detective Jason Gold! Jason has been working on a rape case for some time that has been a mystery to the police....

Kayla wants to fight; she knows she can take him on. She has support from family and friends. After devising a plan to catch Alex (the abuser), Jason and Kayla discover their feelings for each other are growing and taking them both by surprise. Kayla is terrified to open up to anyone, she has kept her secrets hidden for so long and trust isn’t something she can give easily.

“Jason was my anchor in the stormy seas. I don’t know how he managed it, be he helped me find faith in others again...in men.”

Although their feelings for one another lead them into a relationship Kayla is second guessing herself at every turn, her instinctive tells her to run, her heart wants to stay. She doesn’t believe a man could love her, she has nightmares that would scare most men off, her body is scared and her mind believes everything that her abuser has told her.

“Why do you insist that no one can like you? Kay, you’re a beautiful and smart and sexy in and innocent kind of way. Just because the first apple that fell at your feet had holes and all through it doesn’t mean the rest aren’t good enough to eat. You just have to pick the right one.”

While Kayla’s family is trying to help catch her abuser, another attack takes place. This time they know it’s not Alex her former abuser it’s someone new.

With Jason unable to save her, Kayla runs, only to be found again. Jason fights for his girl and doesn’t let anyone get in his way. He is definitely sure of his feelings, after all his past is holding a secret too and he knows now what he feels for Kayla is real. His feelings are strong but he doesn’t want to scare her off, the internal battle with himself is holding him back from saying what he feels.

“I want to tell you Kayla. I want to tell you how I feel, but I’m just not sure you’re ready yet. But, god do I ever want you to know how much you mean to me. Please don’t break me. You are the only one that could. Don’t break me please.”

While seeking justice on those who deserve, we are taken on a powerful journey of survival, love and protection. I highly recommend this book to anyone courageous enough to read it. The subject matter at times is confronting and very real. You feel what Kayla feels; you’re living her nightmares and attacks as they happen. P.J. Belden does a great job portraying real feelings
.
This is my first P.J. Belden book and it definitely won’t be my last. I’m looking forward to Carson’s book #2 in the series, Fantasy Attraction.

My Review

Nightmare can't even describe what I am trapped in. A nightmare is something from which you wake up in a panic before realizing it was all a dream and real life isn't like that. No this is my life.

This book had me in knots!  This book centres around Kayla and the heartbreaking story that is her life. Starting when she was 12 years old she has been repeatedly raped by a friend of her older brother. And the nightmare just has not ceased. No matter where she goes, what she does, he finds her and violates her all over again.

I'm a hideous beast; a plaything for a sick and twisted guy. I have used so many excuses covering up for any visible marks on me. They have never been this bad. How can  hide this one? How can I make this one go away?

Her life is starting to unravel. Hiding the secret of her repeated rapes (been going on for 16? years) is getting harder and harder. Her family knows something is wrong and are no longer content to let her be.

In an attempt to escape a family party she trips on the driveway and literally falls into the arms of Jason, a police officer and the love interest in this book. However, her rapist doesn't like seeing her with someone else and sets out to prove to her that she can't be with anyone else.

"You make it sound like you have a choice. I told you when I first nailed your ass... You. Are. Mine. If you don't start listening, your punishments will get worse until you do! You don't have a fucking choice! If you think pretty boy at the party will stop me you're wrong! No one can stop me... and no one touches what's mine."

I have no idea what it would be like, nor would I ever want to be in a position to know how it feels to be raped. I have read about rape and sexual assaults in other books but none have come close to the emotion that this book elicits. It was heartbreaking and although it was questioned in the book as to why she never told anyone for all these years I think the author did a really great job helping readers understand Kayla and her mind and her emotions.

I did have some problems with the alternating POV's and did not fall for Jason. For me to fully LOVE a book I need to want the man and I found Jason's POV a bit too 'love at first sight'. I think with some minor changes this book could be a 5 star read because the storyline itself was original and so emotional.

This book is the first in the series (no cliffhanger) and the next will focus on Kayla's brother and I already have it added to my "Read Next" list!

Kayla's POV

Everything around me was disappearing. Sounds were beginning to muffle and my vision was going. A sudden sharp pain shot through my chest and the last of my breath left my lungs. The pain that had been constant was lessening. It was like I was going numb. Suddenly I felt like I was no longer part of my body. I felt like I was watching him hit, kick, punch and toss me.

There was a crashing noise and more noise sounded in the room. It was like someone else had come into the room. The pain was leaving me and with it everything faded as well.

Everyone has secrets. How far would you go to keep them hidden? What would it take for you to rid yourself of the secret…. to move past it all?

Kayla Williams was stuck in a reoccurring nightmare. The problem was Kayla wasn’t dreaming. This really was her life for the past sixteen years. No matter what, she knew she had to keep this secret, from everyone she knew and loved especially her ten brothers and sisters. It was a secret that would break the family apart. Kayla is the middle child of a large family. Kayla found it all too easy to blend into the background. When her twin sisters have a graduation party, Kayla decides to stop by only to tell them congratulations. She had tried to stay away from her family and her family home as much as she could. Kayla loved her family, but it was hard to face them, knowing the awful secret she was hiding. What Kayla didn’t know was that going to this party would cause the first domino to fall and trigger the next.

Jason Gold, a dutiful son, was a loner all his life. To Jason, honesty and trust were only a figment of people’s imagination but something he believed in. Jason, a police detective is married to the job. When Jason’s sick mother asks him to attend a party on behalf of her, he meets the one girl that he could not ignore or forget.
Secrets are dangerous…. they can cause bonds to break and hearts to shatter…. Will Kayla survive her hidden secret or will it claim her forever? Will Jason come clean on his secrets or let them tear away the only woman he has cared enough about to pursue?

***** I received an ARC copy for an honest review *****

First let me just say that this is the first book that I read from this author.

OH WOW I don't even know how to write this review, I have to say I read this story with tears in my eyes, I cried through the entire book, this is the type of story that some women could relate to. And I could tell you that I'm one of those woman.

This story is told from both point of view, I am gone keep this short cause I'm still with tears in my eyes and can't see the screen to much since I'm typing with a blurry vision.

For the last sixteen years Kayla has been living a life in hell, she has pushed everyone away, she got to focus on school and became a veteran, she kept moving from house to house, and been living in fear all cause of one man, that kept beating and raping her constantly, and man who took her freedom away and the control of her life.

After sixteen years of goings through what she was, one day it when to far and that's when she finally decided to talk and asked for help, when she told her family everything that she been through they end up going with her to file the report.

That's when she run into Jason, the first time she saw Jason was when she was running out of her sister party, that she almost fell but Jason got catch her, that day she started to have feelings for him that where all new to her, when Jason saw that she was at the police station he was shocked to see her, that was the day that he found out the hell that Kayla has been through.

I love to see the way that this relationship started to build up, cause you just get to feel it two, and you get to see how little by little Kayla life starts to get back to the light, I really did enjoy this heart warming story about second chances and the message that it carried, and love it how Kayla stayed so strong and the carage that she has to let love into her heart. Author P.J. Belden THANK YOU FOR INTRODUCING ME TO THIS AMAZING STORY.

I was two chapters in to Protective Love, when I found myself wanting to slash the throat of one of the characters! It’s okay, I was supposed to hate him! This was a raw, emotional read. The author put me through the wringer, I felt hatred, sadness and shock, but it was balanced by plenty of romance and some hot scenes.

Kayla was violently, sexually abused from the age of twelve. Her attacker, Alex, was an acquaintance of her brother Carson. When he initially raped Kayla, he claimed it was to pay off a debt her brother owed him, but this was not a one time thing. He raped and brutalized Kayla for years. Even when she moved to escape him, he always managed to find her. The author does describe the rapes but it's not too graphic. I hated Alex with a passion.

Kayla never told her family about the attacks, she didn't know how to raise the subject but inside she was crying out for help and wanted them to notice. They didn't, and over the years she distanced herself from her family and never had a relationship with a man.

When Jason sees Kayla for the first time, he's instantly attracted to her. He can't get her out of his mind. Jason has issues from his past and cannot normally commit to a relationship, but he falls hard and fast for Kayla. Over time he is able to make her laugh and bring her out of her shell. His love for her pours off the page. He comforts her during her nightmares; he's protective and always puts Kayla first. He never pushes her. Slowly, Kayla accepts the feelings she has for him, even though she feels unworthy of his love.
When she finally gets the courage to tell her family about the rapes, she realizes she should have done it years ago. It's hard for everyone but they stick together. Her brother Carson is particularly consumed by guilt. He was one of my favorite characters and he has his own book coming soon, Fantasy Attraction. I can't wait to read it.

Kayla: My secrets were mine to carry, not anyone else's."

Kayla Williams had been keeping a horrifying secret from her family since the age of twelve. The night everything changed, her family noticed but did not seem to understand or probe too much. Sadly this torture continued through Kayla's adult life until one day she decided to take her life back into her own hands. Detective Jason Gold was doing a favor for his mother when he went to the Williams' home for a gathering, he literally and figuratively crashed right into Kayla. When he saw her he knew she was hurting, but didn't know why. Having been betrayed himself he was not trusting of women. Little did these two know they needed each other more than ever.

Jason:"For the first time in a long time, as I held this woman in my arms, I had a feeling of peace come over me. Something about this woman called to me."

Wow! Okay this book was so good. Such amazing talent P.J Belden has to write on such a tough subject and turn the story into an amazing story of healing. There were parts of the book I found myself having to stop reading and step back but then I would get pulled back in. It was hard to put down and not ponder or think about. Kayla turns a bad situation into something beautiful. And Jason...oh don't get me started on this man. He sounds GLORIOUS! His love for Kayla is undeniable. I highly recommend this book!

Jason:"Kayla may not know it, but she saved me. She made me realize what life could be like and that just because one thing happened didn't mean it always would or that everyone was the same. She gave me my life back and I will forever be grateful to her for that. Because of Kayla, my heart was beating again and for once I cared."

I was gifted a copy of this book for an honest review.
This is one of those very intense books that will make u mad make u cry and make u laugh it is a wonderful ride. I cant wait to read more about the Williams family. Jason finds Kayla and helps her to heal and admit to so many things that have ruined her life. Kayla is a remarkable lady and Jason is the kind of man every woman needs or wants at some point in their life. This story flows so well that u get so swept up in it that u pretty much ignore everything going on around you. I fell in love with this book from the very first page and did not want it to end. I am now a super huge fan of P.J. Belden. If u love a story with love laughter betrayal family and yes hate and upset then this is the series for you give it a try i personally dont think u will regret it at all. much love to the author i cant wait to follow you on many more journeys through your books.

I was given an ARC in exchange for an honest review.
This was another story that was heartbreaking to me. It's a story with so much pain and trauma I just wanted to jump into the book and rip Kayla out of there and help her myself. Kayla has been suffering for years being repeatedly attacked and harassed and her family has no idea. Kayla is keeping it from them and it just ripped me up that they didn't know and for 16 years did nothing. The repeated harassment and keeping it all inside left her a scared weak woman. This is why I wanted to go save her myself because she deserved happiness and goodness in her life. Then Jason came along and she opened up and had to find away to make herself fight through her learned responses of distrust and fear to realize that she is a strong woman who can get past all of those years of ugliness.
It was a tough read because it was so heartbreaking but it was worth it.

This is the first book I've read by PJ Belden and she did not disappoint!

28 year old Kayla has suffered so much throughout her life, you feel the depth of her pain, hatred, sadness and strength.

She finally breaks and runs from an event, colliding with a man. A man that is about to turn her world upside down...

This heartbreaking beautiful story is about a girl who goes through life scared and broken. What she goes through, no women should ever to. When Kayla's secrets are revealed to her family they unite and do anything to support and protect her. In his story we meet the knight of all knights in shining armour. He stands by Kayla's side protects her and shows her how to trust men again.

I loved this book and I look forward to reading Fantasy Attraction

Wow this is an amazing story! It really hit home and was hard to read but it was worth breaking through the pain and hardship to find the rainbow hidden in the end! This is an intensely personal story about rape, and how it affects everybody, not just the survivor. People are so twisted and can do some real messed up stuff..but maybe it isn't everyone and there are good men out there. I can relate to both Jason and Kay's personal lives. There just may be real happy endings out there. After reading, I think I believe that!
I highlighted half the book, there were some truly inspiring speeches that I want to remember and keep with me. P.J Belsen has a way with words, inspiring and beautiful!!

This book is a heart wrenching story about how sometimes even if you know someone and live with them on a daily bases you truly may not know them. Some people hide things so well family can't even see the pain that your suffering before its to late. This story will make you feel so sorry for kayla and what she has been through and what she has done to keep it from her family. Until enough is enough and she tries to fight past her fears and get her life back you will be on edge wanting to find out what is too happen next and will she ever find true happiness. Don't want to give anything away so all I want to say is read it and if find out for yourself.

Emotionally intense and heartbreaking story that will tug at your heart strings.

My heart was broken for Kayla because of everything she went through. Because of the hell her life was.

Author did an amazing job in developing this story. In crafting the characters. In making you feel all the emotions.

I´m looking forward to read more from the author in the future.

Wow what an emotional, heart shattering, emotional read with a HEA in the mix.

Kayla is such a strong willed survivor to go through what she has and come out on top. With the help and love of family and friends she overcomes her obstacles and finds love in Jason.

Highly recommended to anyone whose heart can take it being shattered and pieced back together.

Protective Love (Hidden Secrets #1)
by P.J. Belden

Reviewed by Amanda

This book is a heart breaking story of a rape victim that is assaulted for 16 years repeatedly. Kayla Williams is alone, afraid and never lets anyone in until she meets Detective Jason Gold. Such a gut-wrenching but beautiful story of how horrible someone's life can be but they still don't give up. Even when Kayla felt she would never have her dreams of finding love because she thought she was too damaged, she never gave up and learned to let herself be loved with the help of Jason.
I absolutely loved these two characters. I was rooting for them throughout the entire book. Jason was amazing! He never let Kayla's past and present get in the middle of his love for her. He was a protector, a gentleman, a lover and not to mention hot!! He was the one person that could make her forget, make her smile and make her happy again.
Even though the issues in this book are dark and heartbreaking, I never felt they took away from the beautiful love story that happens. The author did a perfect job of balancing the love story and keeping the seriousness of the issue in place.
I really enjoyed this book. I was almost finished when all day at work I couldn't stop thinking about it and getting home to finish this awesome story. That is when I know it's a good book :) I can not wait to read more from this author. I did see there is a Hidden Secrets #2 that focuses on her brother. I can not wait to get my hands on that one!

Quote from Kayla: "Whenever he was around me, I felt different. My skin tingled, and my heart skipped beats. It almost felt like I couldn't breathe."

This was a very emotional book. There was so much violence and abuse in this book, but the story would not be the same without it. The abuse scenes were so well written and so descriptive, I felt like I was either right there witnessing it, or it was happening to me. Kayla had the most horrible, life-altering things happen to her throughout the entire book. It literally broke my heart to read it all. It was also amazing to read how she coped and remained strong and independent. Yes she felt alone, depressed at times, and wanted to give up at times, but that is only expected with what she went through. Most people would have given up years earlier. I just wish she would have told her family and let them help her and save her instead of shutting them out. The Williams' family was a wonderful group. They all loved Kayla immensely, and knew something was wrong, but did not know how to help. Jason could not have come into her life at a better time. He was so loving and patient with her. I loved how he picked up on her signals, and did not push her. I really loved his explanation of love at first sight. His natural instinct to protect was so perfect for the situation. Nate was a wonderful, supportive friend to Jason. The ending was exactly perfect. This book does not have a cliffhanger, but it does resume in the next book which is Carson's.

This was an intense, disturbing and horrifying read. Due to the subject matter and the intense descriptions this is not going to be for everybody.

Layla is living a nightmare being raped and abused since she was 12 years old. Never knowing when her attacker is going to strike next she lives her life in fear and pushes those around her away: part protecting them from her life and part blaming them for not recognising what was going on right under their noses and protecting her. Broken, she feels that she will never escape the nightmare until Jason enters her life and begins to show her the light. Jason is police detective and makes Layla feel safe and secure and like there is an end to her nightmare. With a large family, I was surprised that it was possible for the perpetrator to get away with it for so long. As the story unfolds we discover that there is more to the attacks than a sick, evil man getting kicks by attacking Layla over and over. It then becomes a case of who can be trusted.

I have sitting here trying to come with words that describe my feelings for this book as the usual positive words don't fit and feel so wrong. It was an intense journey that totally blew my mind and we witness Layla pick herself up time and time again after brutal and horrifying attacks. I think I will stick with intense.

Did not finish at 48%. This book has way too many inconsistencies and the relationships feel disjointed and not like real people. There's one particular incident that occurred and I was waiting to find out what happened after it was over. The outcome was never mentioned and I'm like, huh? What happened? No report filed? No investigation? We're just moving on like it's just another thing for her to cry about?

Lastly, and this could be considered a spoiler, but really, we know who he is, okay, and have known for the entire book!!! The police (hello Jason?) can't track him down in the first 48 hours? Basic police work is not rocket science. There's more that bugs me, but I figure I've ripped on this author enough!
