The Highwaymen

Rate this book
What are the chances of two serial killers being in the same truck at the same time?
Higher than you’d think.
Stu
Jamie was supposed to be just another victim. He’s exactly my tall, beautiful, a body made for sin.
But he’s also dangerous and unpredictable. He’s got a familiar spark of darkness in him, one that calls to my own.
I want to keep him, claim him. Make him mine.
I shouldn’t. In fact, I should finish him off right now before he gets any ideas about killing me.
But I can’t help myself.
He’s mine now, dead or alive.

Jamie
Stu's a gruff, no-nonsense trucker whose work I’ve admired for years. He's strong, capable, and has a body count that rivals my own. The ultimate kill for someone like me.
He's also never going to let me go once he gets his hands on me.
I should be wary, but instead, I find myself craving his touch.
Stu does things to me that I've never experienced before.
But I can't let myself fall for him.
He’s supposed to be my victim.
Unless he gets me first…

The Highwaymen is a standalone rival to lovers dark romance between two serial killers on the open road. It contains dark themes, high heat, violence, two over the top possessive morally black heroes, and a bloody HEA.

Trucker Stu picks up rent boy Jamie at a travel stop and the two begin making their way to California to deliver Stu's cargo. But the two have a myriad of murderous secrets between them, and both are eyeing each other as a potential victim. The only question is, who will strike first?
I'd fallen in love with this feral, murderous boy, or at least as much as a monstrous thing like me could love."

I absolutely love it when authors write about subjects they're passionate about because I swear you can feel it when you read those kinds of books. I don't usually 'see' the story in my head as I read but the imagery in this dark romance was great. I am also not at all a fan of gory movies or horror but I didn't find the subject matter triggering or disturbing to read. The characters were at the forefront of the story and their connection and chemistry was palpable. The spice was hot 🔥. Thanks L Eveland for a fun, unique story that is absolutely fantastic for fall and spooky season.

Fun Nugget

This book is a fun dark romance. Pumpkin and Honey Bunny find kindred spirits in an unlikely place. The book is fun ride that definitely brings the spiciness along with the dark.

The Highwaymen — this book is smutty chaos and I devoured it. At no point did I know what was going to happen next. Jamie and Stu kept me on the edge of my seat from the very first chapter.

I never knew that I needed a book about trucker serial unalivers but I am so glad that I went for it. Stu and Jamie found exactly what they needed in each other and that’s all that matters. They’re OOT possessive, morally black with no cares to give about it and codependent even when they want to fight it.

This book is DARK. There are no morals here. Please check content warnings and do not go into this expecting a traditional romance. There is an HEA 🖤

FAVORITE QUOTES:
-Terminal edging. This absolutely sent me.
-“This thing between us...it was supposed to be simple. Uncomplicated. Just two twisted souls finding solace and release in each other's darkness.”
-“I don't mix business with pleasure, especially not with batshit crazy little twinks like him.”
-honey bunny & pumpkin 🖤

A dark MM romance with serial killers on road, violence, gore, action, unexpected feels, & steamy kinky times that basically make it an erotica 😉.
I read my #ARC in 4hrs (over 3 days lol, I took my time).

Stuart is the older, grumpy trucker with a filthy mind who takes in the hitchhiker Jamie who's young (early 20s), sunshiney & seductive. They recognised the darkness in the other, which prompted a road trip neither will forget 🤭. Will they kill eachother or...?

At start, this book is low on plot but HIGH on heat + kink (rough play, somno, exhibitionism 🥵). Of course there's emotions & backstories that endears the MC to us (somewhat, they're still killers!). Then there's action plot which I didn't think will get this dramatic, but damn that was badass of the 2! That climax OMFG!

Overall it's a really fun book & was a good time for me 😁. & I ended up loving the 2 too. RIP D.

I loved every gory sexy moment of this book

This was EXACTLY what I needed. I've been reading too many sweet books whilst waiting for this one. L never disappoints me when they get in to a §t@bbity groove.

I loved the character evolution between Stu & Jamie. My favorite part is that neither tried to change they other, only embrace each other's cray cray levels.

I would totally go on mini roads trips of short stories to catch up with these two as they get rid of trash along the highways.

And this book was the perfect blend of OMFG hotness with mayhem and gore.

Definitely will read again, and definitely marking it as one of my fav reads of the year.

The Highwaymen is the story of Stu a truck driver and Jamie a hitch hiker who both just happen to be serial killers. Boy was this book good. I love psychopathic characters and dark stories. I couldn't put this book down and finished it in about six hours. I love the way L Eveland makes the characters so human and believable. I don't want to say to much because I don't want to give any real spoilers, just know I didn't know I needed this story. I would definitely recommend this book.

I said it once and I'll say it again god I LOVE debaucherous depravity. This book was so fun. It's definitely a fantastical experience where you have to suspend your disbelief but honestly, I think that's part of its charm. Obviously, it is a dark book; the main characters unalive people for fun, but I found myself laughing more often than not during my reading. This book is a bloody and slutty mess I loved it so much.

I followed, prowling behind him like a predator stalking wounded prey. He flinched as I touched the cold metal head of the hammer against his ass cheek, then groaned when I slowly traced it over his hip. Swallowing hard, I traced the hammer head down Jamie's spine, mesmerized by the way his supple skin pebbled with goosebumps in its wake. His lithe body trembled beneath my touch, every quivering muscle pulled taut with anticipation and dread.
I love the author's note at the end of this book where they explain how much fun this book was to write and how it pays homage to favorite horror flicks like Scream & Tarrantino movies!

This was a wild ride. Stu & Jamie, although literal killers, will steal your heart. Every time Stu called Jamie "pumpkin" I died💙 There is an abundance of sex including serial killer rp and Jamie taking advantage of a sleeping Stu.

I would have loved more killer-y stuff instead of the Cartel plot but I still had a ton of fun reading this.

"The Highwaymen" by L. Eveland promised a thrilling, dark romance between two serial killers, but unfortunately, it fell flat for me.

The premise was intriguing: two serial killers crossing paths on the open road. However, the execution lacked the depth and intensity I craved.

While the writing was engaging, I struggled to connect with the characters. The "psycho serial killer" vibe was missing.

The dark themes and high heat didn't compensate for the underdeveloped plot and characters. For a story centered around serial killers, I expected more complexity and tension.

Overall, "The Highwaymen" didn't live up to its hype.

*Warning:* This book contains dark themes, violence, and explicit content.

*Recommendation:* Fans of extreme dark romance might appreciate this, but if you're looking for a nuanced, psychological thriller, this might not be the best fit.

Picture this: two psycho killers in one truck cabin, two hunters, who will hunt who?

Stu is a morally gray truck driver, and on the road, here and there, he can give in to his manic urge to kill. One day he takes along a young guy who wants a lift. Ha! A new chance! Only the ‘kid’ is smart and like-minded.

Jamie saw a potential new victim. He needs to ease his mind. Stu would do.

Physically they are a match in heaven, and who knew they had the same need, to kill? Of course, it is a bad decision to take Jamie along with him, but he has to make a choice soon, to kill or keep.

Ditto with Jamie, only killing Stu isn’t what he wants, he craves blood, but someone else’s.

Together they are unhinged and dangerous!! With one mutual enemy, Romeo!

Great read, raw, bloody, vicious, hot, and sexy. The MC are hugely possessive, and jealous and will end anyone who comes between them. There’s an awesome, satisfying dang hot simnophilia scene.

If you can’t stomach bloody scenes don’t read this!

"I couldn't remember the last time I'd been this close to someone without sex or violence being involved. It was a strange, almost unnerving feeling, like my skin didn't quite fit right. But at the same time, there was a rightness to it that i couldn't deny, a sense of peace I'd never known before."

If it could rate this higher than 5 stars, i would. This was a MASTERPIECE! And i don't use that word lightly. I knew this book would be dark with two MCs being killers - and they are both bad asses in their own right and take pride in their "work" lol - but HOLY CRAP i did NOT expect this to be so emotional and for the connection between the MCs to be so heartfelt and sweet - not necessarily in words, but in their actions and mannerisms toward each other, in their own twisted love language that is hehe

This author did such an amazing job of capturing the little private moments and the writing is so good. I LOVE that, even though the MCs don't actually know each other for very long (the whole book happens over around a week of two timeline-wise), they don't pretend to know each other more than they do - no assumptions that lead to some sort of insta-love. Instead, there are beautifully captured soft appreciations between the MCs and its overflowing with small, quiet moments that focus on how each MC starts to form deeper feelings for the other.

CHAPTER 14 Y'ALL - it really got me all up in my feels, and it was one of the best chapters I've ever read that captured a really lovely side of intimacy and took its time letting a hurt MC contemplate on their own - I was blown away. It held simple small moments that hold a ton of relatable emotional significance for this MC with their background and you can feel how much it means to them.

"Stu's fingers carded through my hair, his blunt nails scraping gently against my scalp. 'I'm right here,' he murmured, his deep voice rumbling through his chest and into mine. 'And I'm not going anywhere without you.' " <3 <3

"We held each other in that gore-soaked embrace for a small eternity, the rest of the world fating to insignificance" --like what?!? a small eternity?!? my heart couldn't take it <3

Also, the spicy scenes were fucking great - the bathroom scene was *chefs kiss*, my lanta ifykyk lol

Dual POV, 1st person
Strict roles, kinky and there is a 'roleplay' scene that isn't well captured by the content warnings: it's a scene that happens early on where one MC asks the other to treat them as one of their bargaining murder victims so it's kind of dub-con-ish / roleplay without super clear discussion beforehand (which is in character for the MCs) but I think it's handled well, it doesn't feel unexpected for the MCs personalities. I think it leaves them both realizing that they have a connection that they want to foster even if they don't know what to call it yet, and it starts laying the groundwork of each of them thinking about what kind of relationship they want with each other. But from the content warnings, you might not necessarily see this coming and how it's listed might be unclear to some readers to expect this. No cheating - read the content warnings first, then enjoy my friends!

4.5 stars

I messaged the author halfway through to tell them that I was equal parts revolted and enthralled, and entirely unable to put it down. That description remained true throughout the book - it was gory, it was wild, it made me very glad that it was only fiction, and it entirely HOOKED me on Stu and his little murder twink. Congratulations Eveland, for writing what you wanted to write. It's fantastic!

This is not a light read, there are some heavy scenes and both MCs are no good guys at all (which made me like them even more 🤭)

Stu and Jamie meet coincidentally, both of them instantly sensing the other one may not be what it first seems. They have one shared.. let's call it hobby, so they get along and team up.

This story is thrilling, unnerving and extremly hot and it's the perfect read if you search for dangerous men who have explosive chemistry and are morally pitch black ❤️‍🔥

I was expecting something more tense but all I got was gore and sex. Nothing wrong about it but it just felt they revealed themselves to each other too soon and that took my interest away. I wanted more cat and mouse, more 'is he as well?'. The premise is really good though.

this is a 4.25 for me. This book was dark and hot and omg so goood. I could not put this book down and I finished it in almost one sitting. It was a real page turner, and you can tell the author really enjoyed writing this book because it was such a fun read.

I really enjoyed the two MCs Jamie and Stu who shouldn't work but absolutely do because they are both unalivers who have issues, but both seem to make it work. Jamie has an issue with not being as in control and more reactive while Stu is more in control and methodical. While for some that may be opposites attract and they balance one another it can also mean that having someone so impetuous for someone in control in the unaliving sphere would be a deal breaker or having someone control them may lead to some stabby thoughts from the other. But in the end, they actually made it work and did balance each other out but I kept thinking of two big cats in a cage and who will come out on top.

Along with really entertaining characters and all the steamy spice this book had a fun plot that while not the most in depth I will admit kept me entertained and added intensity the characters and what they were going through really being their personalities out.

One of my nitpicks though was at the last crime scene they were not concerned at all about leaving DNA behind and I just kept thinking this is what is going to get them caught and I don't want that!

This book is about Stu who is a truck driver who decides to one night pick up a guy at a truck stop. He doesn't know what made him decide to pick him up, yes, he is attractive and his type but it would be more trouble to bring him but there was just something about his eyes just called out to him. Besides if he proves more trouble than he is worth he has ways of dealing with the problem like he has in the past. But as they drive out and start talking Stu starts to realize what he saw in his eyes was a darkness similar to his own that calls out to him but what are the chances of two serial unalivers being stuck in the same truck together? All Stu knowns is that Jamie is now his and he is not letting him go.

I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.

This is DARK. Heed all the trigger warnings because this is DARK. The two main characters are serial killers. They are psychopaths to the nth degree. They aren't warm and fuzzy. They are twisted and severely screwed in the head. Having said that, this is one of the best books I've read this year. It's a complete bloodbath and the spicy parts are brutal in some places. This is why is I say HEED ALL THE TRIGGER WARNINGS!!!!!

We get our first look at Stu, the older of the pair, and a truck driver at a truck stop in Texas. He's making a stop on his way to Los Angeles with a load of truck parts and drugs. He notices a chestnut brown haired twink, about twenty-three or so, climbing out of a truck. Lot lizard in the vernacular. He's a prostitute working the truck drivers. The last truck he climbs out of takes off fast. Makes Stu wonder what's going on. Long story short, Stu picks up the twink, Jamie, and off they go.

They see something in each other. Their psychopathy calls out to each other or something. Like recognizes like. Jamie seems to be the crazier of the two. He was picked up by a trucker before the book started and held as a prisoner. The trucker got careless and Jamie was able to kill him and escape. Stu just seems to your run of the mill psychopath.

I don't like to give away too much of the story. I think people should read the book and decide for themselves. People are probably asking how can anyone give a book like this five stars. I'm not judging the morality of the characters. I'm just visiting their world. The author does a great job at making Stu and Jamie more than just murderous caricatures. They are living, breathing, and loving creatures. Yes, they love each other in their own twisted way. It's an interesting and well written view into a world one hopes they will never step foot in for real.

Do you enjoy
🗡🩸🚚🚬👬
If so, this might be for you.
As always, mind the Tw/cn that the author, and or readers have provided.

Fuck me sideways, L Eveland did it again. This book might only be about 265 pages, but it feels so much longer. So much more visceral. And not in a bad way, in a, I'm there with these characters feeling, being, etc. with them.

"Come on, Jamie, open those pretty eyes for me," I begged my voice cracking. "If you die on me, I'll follow you to hell to kick your ass." - Stu

This book is dark. Like, fucking dark. Both main characters have dealt with childhood trauma, and one of them was kidnapped and used as a sex slave for a time. But, really, what do we expect of a story about two serial killers finding each other, and finding love.

If you can not handle blood, gore, violence, cnc/dubcon, mentions of sa, and abuse by a kidnapper, lots and lots of murder, lots and lots of blood, sex while covered in your victims blood, (and more) this may not be for you.

I'll say that again, if the Tw/Cn the author and other readers (like myself) share, are a no go for you, DO NOT READ THIS.

I love both characters and kind of hope that we get to read about more of their murderous adventures in the future.

I really enjoy dark horror romance. I enjoy dark, morally corrupt characters, even when they have no redeeming qualities. Because this is fiction, and this is the best place to have fun and get dirty with the topics.

I thank the author for allowing me to read this early. I also, highly suggest joining their patreon(where i got access to this arc), where you get to see all these goodies come to be.

The Highwaymen
L. Eveland
Rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Spice: 🌶🌶🌶🌶🌶

What a ride! (Pun intended)

This was an incredible read that had you routing for cold blooded killers. Normally, you’ll have some morally grey characters “taking care” of low life degenerates, The Highwaymen had them un-aliving random people just for fun. I wasn’t sure I was going to like this book, I was very happily surprised that not only did I like it, but I couldn’t put it down.

Stu and Jamie were such dark and complex characters. They had darkness in their pasts and in them that should have made them unlikable, but Eveland performed magic and had me in their corner wanting them to make it through.

The spice in this book is just next level! It was hot, dirty and had you salivating for more. Everytime these two looked at each other the heat just emanated off of the page.

This is the perfect read for Spooky Season. So add it to your TBR!

This is a dark romance novel so please read the content warnings before starting. Definitely don't expect the MCs to be redeemed during the storyline because that is not the intent in this book.

This book follows Stu a trucker and Jamie a hitch-hiker who meet at a truck stop and discover they have similar proclivities.

Stu and Jamie's differences balance each other well in the story. While Jamie is a bit more unhinged and needs to be in control, Stu is methodical and calm which balances out Jamies impetuousness. The spice and chemistry between the two characters was well done. The approach of the MCs, especially Jamie, to most of their crimes is a bit blase and they don't seem overly concerned with the evidence they leave behind which takes away a little from the plot.

Overall though the chemistry and spice make this a very enjoyable book. You can definitely tell the author has a love for this type of chemistry in their writing.

I enjoyed this one, but there was nothing overwhelmingly exciting about it.

Stu is a truck driver and Jamie is essentially a twink that hunts around at the truck stops. Both serial killers. Both a little unhinged. I did feel that neither of these guys were over the top unhinged or anything—they just seemed fairly normal. They do some killing but the events and descriptions are somewhat lackluster and didn’t have me on the edge of my seat like other books similar to these themes did.

Things between them are hot, but again, the build up and passion was just somewhat lacking. There were also a lot of details I would have liked to have, like more on Stu’s job, and more on how they were covering their tracks after a kill, that we didn’t get. I know they were killing in remote places and alleys, but come on, it was lazy of them to not be concerned about leaving evidence behind!

All in all I probably wouldn’t read it again but this could have been a “me” thing and not necessarily the book. It didn’t feel or come off as “dark” as I assumed it would be, so that could be why!

My Lover Is A Serial Killer 🌶️🌶️🌶️🌶️

So, I’ve seen the same pic of Billy and Stu from Scream circulating for the last couple of years and loved the idea of them being lovers and what that would look like.

This is sort of like that. If they were depraved and got away with it. And by depraved, I mean “let’s 🦆 (with an F) in the blood of our enemies” depraved.

Giving it a 4/5🌶️ simply because it was so delicious I needed more. “Fantastic! Give me 14 of ‘em right now!” Seriously. You’ll cream yourself before making it to 50%.

Story line is killer. Pun intended. Super easy, fast paced read. Stu meets Jamie at a truck stop and decides to take him for a ride. Jamie toys with Stu, “What are the odds that two serial killers would be in the same vehicle?”. Apparently, according to Stu it’s more common than you’d think.

P.S. Serial Killer by Moncrieff and JUDGE is a bop. You should check it out.

This book is dark. Like pitch black dark. And I loved every damn word of it. L Eveland knows how to write a dark spicy romance, but this book, this book takes the cake.

What do you get when you have a twink serial killer picked up by a rough truck driver who also kills for fun? Am explosive f*cking ride that’s what. There’s an underlying darkness that calls to each other.

Stu and Jamie shouldn’t work, they shouldn’t want what they want. But they do, so they give in no matter where it’s leads.

There is unaliving, smut so spicy I blushed, waiting for my Kindle to ignite, and blood and gore to top it off. It was absolutely f*cking 🔥🔥. Now there’s a story line, but I wouldn’t say it’s what attracts you, it’s pretty basic and you can guess where it’s headed. But it’s absolutely amazing.

Thank you for letting me read and review!

Eveland's love letter to the slasher film, but make it gay romance, means this book is pretty much exactly what it says on the tin. Eveland definitely leans into what makes slasher movies, such as the overt and excessive goriness, vaguely uncomfortable to watch (which is also part of the genre's appeal). They also apply this to the explicit sexual encounters present in this book. However, while the romance element may be subtle, it is an important thread that ties the characters together and leads them down the difficult path of navigating the story's external conflict. This book may not be for all readers, but the author's clear passion makes for a compelling story even when aspects of the story weren't necessarily my cup of tea.

This one I jumped between a 3-4 star. It started off strong for me, I liked Jamie and Stu’s energy and their darkness that called to one another. But for me, it kind of fizzled about 75% in, there were times I got bored cause of too much monologuing. Ultimately, I enjoyed these two guys but I would put it on like a 3/5 for dark. I was expecting more from them, not all the blood and gore we got. For someone who has been doing it for so long without getting caught, I was shocked how messy Stu is. They leave a trail of evidence behind them. I get it’s a story, but there’s no reality at all in it, the way they have killed, they will get caught if it were anywhere but a book. I still enjoyed the story though, I liked the characters, and it had a dark edge, so that’s why I ultimately gave it a 4 star.
