"Family first," they preach—what a fucking lie… I've always been the second-class the punchbag, the loser. So, sending me off to the military was the best thing they could have ever done for me. I finally found who I am and what I stand for, and a woman worth fighting for. But when she's stolen from me, ripped from my fingertips when I was at my weakest, I vowed I'd make her mine once again, when the time was right.
Leila
He was my light, my knight, the one I keep hoping will return and rescue me from the nightmare I keep waking in. I was sold to pay off a debt. Claimed by a wicked man and his the one who orchestrates everything in what's left of my life. The only way out is death. A darkness that's calling me.
Will Christopher and Leila reclaim their love, or will it slip through their fingers like the whispers of a dream?
Adina D. Grey is a USA Today and International Bestselling Author. She was born and raised in Italy so it's no surprise she has a huge addiction to coffee, dogs, and books.
Her book addiction and passion for travelling led her into the creative world of words where she writes, blogs, and beta reads. Her writing covers various sub genres and tropes but she's a sucker for a HEA, this is a cliffhanger free zone.

So... Shadow seemed like it was gonna be a dark mafia romance that I could really sink my teeth into, but it just fell short. The concept of this book had me so interested, but it just didn't deliver like I hoped it would. It was a very short novel, which is fine, but in this situation I feel like a longer book would have been better. It felt rushed and left me slightly confused feeling like chapters or parts of the story were missing. The length of the story also didn’t allow for any character building and growth, which left them being a bit flat and I didn't feel like I rooted for our main characters. I could see the potential for it to be a really awesome story. If it had more time and attention to detail, it could have been something unforgettable. But as it is now, it's just a missed opportunity.
Thanks to The Author Agency for providing me with an ARC of this book.m, and of course the opinions expressed in my review are entirely my own. ♥️
"I don't even know what it means to be free anymore."
This was short. But not lacking. I really enjoyed watching Leila find the revenge she deserved after years of being held captive. She was such a gentle FMC, but the fire we saw when she got her revenge makes me think there is sooo much more to Leila and I'm VERY curious now! I loved Chris! Possessive. Protective. Patient. Watching them find their way back to each other has me eager for so much more!
Overall I like the concept and loved Chris. However, felt like it was being rushed through and didn’t find Leila a compelling or sympathetic so was hard to feel as much for her character. I think it’s a lot to her reaction in the first chapter, she wasn’t even worried about Chris and replaced him so easily with his brother so it’s hard to believe she really did love him that much. Also the military doesn’t seem to be really that relevant to the plot imo so not sure why it’s mentioned at all, could be dropped and it wouldn’t change anything in the story at all.
Would have loved a deeper dive into the mafia and Seattle stuff and have it less rushed. Same with Leila’s reaction to Chris disappearing and trying to understand what happened to him at the start.

WOW!!! Shadow was such an incredible story, I had to read it straight through. There was absolutely no way I could put it down. These two authors captured my attention from the very first page. I absolutely loved the characters. Christopher and Leila are very well written. Their dark tale is very intriguing and one you don't want to miss.
Made it 20 pages before I couldn’t do it anymore. The “villains” are cartoonish, the writing is childish, and I just don’t care to stick around and find out if I’ll eventually be invested in any of them, so - dnf at 14%

Star: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Shadow by Adina D. Grey and Alexis Suttonhale is an intense, heart-wrenching story that delves into the shadows of loyalty, loss, and love against a brutal backdrop of crime and captivity.
The narrative primarily follows Christopher and Leila, each carrying profound scars and a fierce desire to reunite despite the cruel forces that have torn them apart. Christopher, the brother overshadowed and overlooked by his family, finds purpose and strength in the military, only to be shattered when his love, Leila, is stolen from him. Leila, in turn, is trapped in a desperate, nightmarish existence, her life dictated by those who hold her as collateral. Her resilience and the glimmer of hope that Christopher will one day rescue her is all that keeps her from surrendering to despair.
The authors skillfully capture the raw emotion of these characters, balancing love and anguish with moments of tenacity and vulnerability. Christopher’s quest for redemption and revenge, as well as Leila’s struggle to survive, pull readers into a gripping story of two people fighting for each other against seemingly insurmountable odds. This story is intense and dark, peppered with moments of tenderness that shine like brief, precious reprieves.
Shadow is perfect for readers who enjoy stories of love under duress and who are willing to journey through darkness to find flickers of hope. The story confronts complex themes of control, resilience, and the power of love to reclaim lost souls, making it an emotional read that stays with you long after the final page.
This book jumps into a crazy, dark and corrupt mafia lead world and follows Chris and Lelia as they both struggle and fight in order to survive in this world.
This is a short novella and I read this in a few hours it's a good story don't get me wrong but it could have been a tad longer as I felt the characters didn't really have time to develop their stories. We were just sorta thrust into this mafia world and the backstory of Chris all we got was what happened to him with his brother and father but we never got to know or see what happened to him after in those two years that passed.
Both Lelia and Chris carry scars and what they both go through at the hands of Nick ( Chris's brother and their father ) is just shocking. Lelia is trapped after Chris is sent away and is used as a sex toy for all which is not nice to read of course but shows her fight and determination to be set free. Her resilience is one of the factors that kept me reading because she was just so strong and Chris well......he's also been through a lot he's seen as the brother who is overlooked and overshadowed so when he's told to leave and join the military he's then shocked to find out Leila is stolen from him and given to his brother as a toy to use in his games. When they finally meet again Chris has to not only heal his own scars but also be there for Leila.
This is a dark story but there is hope at the end...I just wish it was a tad longer because I wanted more time with these two I wanted to know what Chris went through in those two years away. But I do think this story will stay with me for a while.
This is a very dark mafia book, so it is important you read the triggers. I'm a fan of Adina and have read her books before. Alexis Suttonhale is new to me though. I am on a debate whether it is 3 stars or 4,purely because of some scenes in the book. This is only because of a personal preference and some would be OK with it. I love Dark dark romance and nothing is really off limits. But this book had open scene of MMC having a s3x scene with another woman and the main FMC was being SA on page. I think that part as the hardest for me. It was too much because we got 2 full scenes. My heart broke for both the MC because of why they went through. Christopher was the youngest son and after his mum died, his father was very open about his dislike for him. His older brother and father were so cruel and abusive. He was then sent away after losing the one woman he loved. Leila was a gentle woman but my goodness she was strong. When Christopher left before she could tell him how she feels, she was lost. So when Christopher's older brother made a move with his charm she fell for it. What she didn't know was thabher father sold her to clear his debt. This was Christopher's father's and brother's last nail in his coffin. They abused her, r4ped her and sold her to other men for 2 years. Christopher didn't know as he thought she married his brother and was happy. 2 Years later he is back to save her, not knowing the torture she endured. Read and find out how Christopher becomes the mafia leader and brings Leila back from the dead. I did like the 2nd half of the book but wish we got more of them as a couple. That might have made me feel better. Haha.
Shadow is a storm of darkness and intensity—a short read that hooks you into a world ruled by loyalty, revenge, and love’s most brutal tests.
Christopher's life is shattered when his own family ruthlessly casts him aside, sending him off to Seattle. But instead of giving up, he uses this time to plot his revenge.
His only solace? Leila, a girl he tries to keep hidden from his family’s clutches. Yet, fate is unforgiving, and his family finds out about Leila. His own brother lures her in, dragging her into their twisted game. Leila's ensnared by his brother, enduring torment and abuse and keeping hope alive that Christopher would return.
And he does—fierce and relentless. Christopher’s return is ruthless, but he discovers Leila broken. Together, they try to rebuild, transforming her into the strong woman she was always meant to be.
Tropes: 🖤Dark Mafia Romance 🖤Second Chance Lovers 🖤“Touch Her & Die” 🖤Secret Societies 🖤Loyalty and Honour
While Shadow is fast-paced and delivers those mafia punches, I couldn’t help but crave a deeper dive into Seattle’s criminal underworld and Christopher’s revenge. The story races, leaving me wanting more of Leila’s emotional journey, the gritty mafia dynamics, and those gritty details that make you sink into the dark world.
This short read packs a punch but would shine as a full novel. If you’re looking for a dark romance that’s rough around the edges with fast-paced, high stakes, this one’s for you!
Shadow by Adina D. Grey & Alexis Suttonhale is a compelling read that captivates with its intriguing premise. The story dives straight into the action, which is both a strength and a weakness. On one hand, it keeps the reader engaged from the get-go, but on the other, it leaves some gaps in the narrative that could have been filled with more backstory and world-building. The relationship between Leila and Chris is central to the plot, but it feels like we missed the beginning of their journey. Questions like how they met, why they couldn't be together, and why Chris was sent away remain unanswered, which might leave some readers wanting more context. Despite these gaps, the character of Chris stands out. His determination to take a stand is admirable, though his ultimate goals are somewhat unclear. This ambiguity adds a layer of complexity to his character, making him one of the more interesting aspects of the book. Overall, Shadow is a quick and enjoyable read with a lot of potential. It could benefit from more detailed world-building and backstory, but it still manages to deliver an engaging narrative that keeps the reader hooked.
Hold onto your hearts (and your sanity), because this book is an emotional firestorm you won't recover from! 🔥💔💣
Christopher has been beaten down, cast aside, and underestimated his whole life. But guess what? He’s back, he’s jacked, and he’s ready to burn the world down for the woman he loves. 🥵💪💥 Forget second chances—this man is here for vengeance, redemption, and some seriously spicy reconnections. 😏🔥💋
And Leila? She’s trapped in a nightmare where every day feels darker than the last. 🖤🔒 Her only light? The hope that her knight will come back for her. Their reunion? Explosive. Passionate. And downright addictive. 🌶️🔥💥 But the stakes couldn’t be higher—freedom, love, and their very lives hang in the balance.
This book delivers all the feels—hot, messy, raw, and deliciously dark. Think steamy moments that’ll have you fanning yourself, gut-wrenching drama that’ll leave you breathless, and a love story so intense it’ll set your soul on fire. 🔥😍🔥
If you’re into danger, forbidden love, and chemistry that sizzles off the page, grab this book NOW. You’ll laugh, cry, swoon, and probably scream into a pillow, but trust me—it’s worth every second. 😈✨📖
In this fast paced mafia romance we get the story of Chris and Leila as they are ripped apart from each other at a pivotal turning point in their could-be love story. Chris is beaten down by his brother in a cage match that results in him left in a coma for several months and then afterwards shipped off to handle the family business far away. Leila is left not knowing where Chris went and why he never showed up to meet her.
Chris faces the ultimate betrayal from his brother when he finds out he's made a move for Leila himself with his father's backing. Meanwhile Leila is being used as a pawn by his brother and father as a way to pay off her father's debt. So while Chris his finding his place in the family business and making a name for himself he has no idea of the abuse Leila is suffering from. She's hoping for Chris to return and save her or to find an darker escape for herself. And Chris is working behind the scenes to take back what has been ripped away from him.
This book was very fast paced and short to the point of feeling like vital parts were somewhat glossed over or rushed. The concept was really good but at the same time it felt like I wanted to get more from parts of their story. Chris and Leila clearly had a connection that couldn't be broken no matter what was thrown at them.
✨️Review: This was tricky to rate because it's very short, around 100 pages, so by default there isn't a very in depth story. So, I'm adjusting my rating a bit due to that. If one wants and likes fast paced, shorter, action-focused type stories, this is for you.
You won't get deeper character dives or fleshed out drama details. There feels like a missed opportunity of events skimmed over that really could've made an amazing story. It hints at a Count of Monte Cristo-like mafia revenge, which id love! But things are just too quick and missed. Our fmc gets over Chris too easily and just feels weak. Chris is a bit better described but I'd love to have seen his recovery and transformation journey more.
The military mentioned in the blurb is nonexistent in the story so not sure why that's highlighted. That could've been a great few chapters! So I give it a 3 based on the strong bones this story has but it sadly missed its potential for me, being way too short for what it wanted to be.
I received a copy of this book from the publisher/author to review for Stephanie's Book Reports.
This is a short read. But it is a good one. This is the story of Christopher and Lella. Christopher his entire life was preached to about family coming first. However, that wasn't true in his life. He was the second son of a Mafia boss and they really did him a favor when they shipped him off the military. He also was able to find the love of his life Lella while in the military. But now someone has taken his entire world. He is not about to let that stand. Lella is living a nightmare. She is being held as collateral but she never loses faith that Christopher will find her and in that she finds her inner strength. I really can't tell you more about this story or I will spoil something for someone. I loved these characters. Loved the relationship they had and how hard the loved each other. We get to see moments that are dark and intense but also moments that will restore your faith in love.
I would consider Shadow a novella. It’s a fast paced book and I was able to read it in under 2 hours. Chris is a young man who meet a woman named Leila who he had fallen in love with. But, since Chris is the second son and isn’t the favorite he is abused and neglected and had to keep Leila a secret. However, to his dismay his brother had found out about her and it became a problem. Chris and his brother have a horrible fight and Chris is sent from Italy to Seattle. Nicholas then begins a relationship with Leila and wedding invitations are sent. Chris is able to improve himself and gain self confidence and control once he is away from his father and brother. This book does have some horrific scenes that may make people uncomfortable so please check the trigger warnings before reading. I enjoyed the story I felt in some parts it was a little rushed and wished it was longer to really flesh out certain plot items. I believe there is another book coming out in this series. But, if your looking for a fast paced mafia novella this one was good.
Shadow is a really intense emotional story that I blew through. I did not want to stop reading. Caught up in all the family chaos right from the start. Heart gripping raw emotions felt throughout, there is no relief. Deep feelings for Christopher and Leila. Pure young love shattered. Deep despair and anguish felt as they struggle and fight to tolerate living after be in torn apart with no true understanding as to why. Leila‘s strong will, and Christopher‘s unrelenting drive keep the light of hope alive during the most desperate of times as the story unravels and the depth of betrayal and depravity from this corrupt mafia world unfold make you want nothing more than for Christopher and Leila to overcome and survive. This intense dark mafia read and will sit in my heart and mind for sometime. Yes some parts felt rushed because so much plot is packed into this novella. Check the trigger warnings as some of the content is difficult and you must ensure this book is right for you. I enjoyed this impassioned second chance mafia read and look forward to more from these authors.
Leila and Christopher met as their families knew each other through business. Christopher was the second brother to inherit his father's position, but he was used as the whipping boy instead. He gets banished to Seattle to run a smaller portion of the mafia. His father and brother are sold Leila in his absence to pay her father's debts. She's basically assaulted by the brother and father along with many other associates. Event Christopher is going to win her back as he's never forgotten her.
This book was a very short novella with many events that could have been expanded on like their childhood, the army where he was sent to, and how he cleans up his portion of the mafia before uniting with the La Sacra Corona. The spicy scene was short for these two as well. Overall, I would read more of this series if it was expanded on. I just want more from it as it felt lacking and moved too quickly.
⚠️Please read all trigger warnings before reading⚠️
Thank you, author, for the ARC! Release Date: November 13, 2024
This is a short book, which is fine! Its 116 pages, Italian mafia romance, second chance, lots of trauma so check your triggers, very brief smut at like 1.5/5 on the spice scale and it’s a HEA.
This book surprisingly had a full storyline despite the short length, and that was certainly.. shocking in itself. I had a great time but it was the syntax that threw me off. I couldn’t tell if the author was Italian and that was the problem (2nd language etc), or whether it needed some heavier editing.
The grammatical structure of most sentences, the words that are missing randomly (which would make sense in the Italian -> English pipeline as the syntax would be different!) It was perfectly fine up until like 50% maybe? And then it was blindingly obvious every sentence seemed to have the same issues.
There is also a hefty dose of telling rather than showing, which I’d DNF in a longer novel but as it was so short, I kept reading.
The concept was great, it was the actual words themselves that led the charge of issues unfortunately.
Tropes: mafia romance, dark romance, second chance, secret society, touch her and d*e.
The main characters Christopher and Leila are both with their own scars. Christopher is the second son and is always overshadowed by his brother until he finds purpose when he is sent away to the military. Leila is his secret who he tries to keep hidden from his family but after he is sent away, they get their hands on her and she is dragged into their game. After his return, and her rescue, together they must put Leila back together and build her back to the strong person she was before.
A quick read which I think hindered what could have been an in depth great plot and character development due to the short length of the book. If the book was longer we would have been provided with a stronger base story - how Chris and Leila met, more about the Seattle underworld, etc. But still a good read.
[eARC] This story did not click with me at all. I'm an avid dark romance reader and can normally read anything, but I felt like 75% of the book was on-page suffering. It felt like the descriptions of the suffering could have been kept to references from the past, rather than on-page, in the moment. References would have had a similar impact to the story but kept the focus on the feeling that love can conquer. It felt like the suffering was the whole story. I was not expecting that. Trigger warnings around SA need to be heeded.
During the greater portion of the book, there was at least character development for Christopher.
The blurb mentioned the military and it being the best thing, but the story doesn't reflect that. The story felt very rushed and like it had gaps in the timeline.
His families’ spare . His father and brother never did anything except treat him like trash ! Mental and physical abuse . One day at a the boxing ring his older brother beats him within an inch of his life …
The only good thing he had in his life way Layla . Her father used her to settle a debt w the mafia fam . She endured 2 years of constant 🍇, mental and physical abuse at the hands of his brother , father and whoever the brother decided to borrow her off to .
Thankfully they were able to find their way back to each other , move away and start over :) they got the HEA they both desperately needed and bother father and brother are no longer obstacles in their lives .
This was such a great, short, quick but really well written story. My heart broke for Chris and Leila and what they went through. Once I started reading, I couldn't stop. It's pretty fast paced with lots of action. Nicholas and his father were really hard characters to get past. They were both absolutely deranged and after what they put Chris through... they had to have known they were creating a monster. Although... a monster, Chris is not. He is so sweet, loving and patient with Leila to allow her the time to heal from her trauma before taking the next step. I adore them together and loved the way this story played out. Definitely give this a read.
Well… I had high hopes for a new dark mafia, but this fell a bit flat for me. From what I could pick up on the overall plot, the book could have been really good if it had been flushed out more. The main characters, Leila and Chris, were so close to having depth, but I was too confused about everything happening to even dive into their characters. Things moved fast, and I get that this is a short book, but we jumped so fast through everything that nothing felt concrete.
Thank you to Adina D. Grey, Alexis Suttonhale, and The Author Agency for providing me with an ARC in exchange for my honest review!
This is a prequel to a new series and this is Chrsitopher and Leila’s journey. Christopher has been beaten down in life, but joining the military, he comes into his own. Leila is held captive for years, waiting for her saviour to come release her, but biding her time to extract vengeance. This is a good story which is a quick read, with family, dynamics, friendships, raw emotions, complex storyline, secrets, lies, revenge, loyalty, betrayal, resilience, redemption, second chances, sacrifices, off the chart’s chemistry, and love, which leads to an enjoyable, and spicy, dark romance. I look forward to reading more from these talented authors’ whose work I highly recommend.
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ 4/1🌶 -Mafia -First loves -Touch her and ☠️ -Childhood abuse -Captivity -DV/SA -🍇
Check your TWs. The first part of this book is NOT an easy read. It's dark, depraved, and sickening. Chris and Leila had a young love that never had a real chance. Chris was forced out of Italy to run his father's business in the U.S. Leila was taken captive by Chris's family and abused in the worst ways humanity has to offer. This does end on a HEA if you can handle it.
I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
Please be sure to check the trigger warnings for this one.
What to Expect: ••» Dark Mafia Romance ••» Secret Society ••» Second Chance ••» Touch Her & Die
Shadow is a short, intense, and heart-wrenching tale of loyalty, loss, and love, set against a gritty world of crime and captivity—a story brimming with potential.
We follow Christopher and Leila, both carrying deep emotional scars and a fierce determination to reunite despite the cruel forces keeping them apart. Christopher, who has always felt like an outsider, finds strength, purpose, and love in Leila. But when she’s torn away from him to settle a debt, their lives are shattered.
This story had so much going for it! I only wish it had been a full-length novel, as it wrapped up a bit too quickly for my taste. The concept was engaging, but with the fast pace, it was challenging to fully connect with Leila’s character. I would’ve loved to see more moments between Chris and Leila to deepen their bond.
Some elements didn’t seem crucial to the plot and could be left out without much impact, but I would have loved more exploration of the mafia dynamics and the Seattle setting. Shadow had all the right ingredients, and with a bit more depth, it could have been truly unforgettable.
Thank you to the authors, Adina D. Grey & Alexis Suttonhale, and The Author Agency team for the ARC opportunity.
This is a dark romance book and you should check the trigger warnings as the first half of this book can be triggering. The story of Christopher and Leila is one of being ripped away from each other by vengeful family. It’s a short read and there is opportunity to expand further on both main character’s journey to healing but there is palpable love between the two and Christopher’s commitment to Leila is so sweet and comforting for her. For being a shorter book the authors did a great job at weaving this story from beginning to end
This read was heart breaking, emotional but every bit intriguing. Chris was pushed aside by his father and brother, sent to the States. While the love of his life traded her life to two monsters unknowingly. After years, Chris returns to save her and take back the power he had been stripped of. This is a well written story, you feel the characters emotions, you will be so wrapped up in the chapters that you will need to sit back and process once it’s done. If you like every bit steamy, and emotional then this would be a great read. There are chapters of abuse and trauma.
