As a baby, the FMC was discovered on the threshold of the pack's alpha residence. Due to a premonition that she will become powerful one day, the beta and his wife, who are unable to have children, take her in and nurture her as their own. This goes on until she is 15 years old and the rite where Shifters get their wolves doesn't happen for her. She is ridiculed, shamed, mistreated, and abandoned as she is forced to remain on the pack grounds until she becomes 21.
At 19, she is kidnapped and sent to Cedar Hollows School for Alphas, or, as Prince Keiran, the King Alpha's son, puts it, "Think of it as an invitation you couldn't refuse." She is forgiven for being a shame because of her failure to shift, but this does not imply the students are ready to play nice.
Her friendship and bond with Lila and Talon is one that comes easily and naturally to her. These supporting characters are some of my favourites, and I can't wait to learn more about them in the second book.
The other woman's drama is mild; she is the daughter of the King Alpha's right hand, and she claims to be the future Luna, which makes her jealous. Although it only has a minor role, this enhances the narrative.
This isn't a 'why choose' narrative, even if the FMC eventually discovers she has two fated partners instead of just one. She is unable to have both, so she must choose one. One of those options will result in a better future for the entire world, however the other would bring about its devastation and demise. No pressure right? 🤷♀️😅
What I loved: The FMC's growing feelings for both of her partners and how she handled all of these challenging circumstances. She seemed well-balanced, and I never felt the need to hit her with logic or roll my eyes at her for making foolish choices. Seeing an FMC that was so well-balanced was refreshing. The story had me guessing as to which one she would choose and which one would lead to the light or darkness. It made it enjoyable as I couldn't 100% guess which one I was backing.
The book was easy to read and kept me engaged. I thoroughly enjoyed the storyline and the fact that it wasn't the typical 'why choose' storyline .I can't wait to see where this tale leads in the second book. This book, in my opinion, was a fantastic initial introduction to a series, and I'm eager to watch how it develops.
What I wasn't a fan of: Some of the sentences were poorly written, which made them awkward and detracted from the narrative. It didn't happen very often, though, and it's easy to fix.
Storyline: The drawback is that I was liking the steady pace at which everything was moving. This is until all of the action begins, such is when she receives her Wolf, the choosing, or when she leaves the academy. At these points, the plot quickens and cuts out details that could have enhanced the narrative. Readers are particularly interested in specifics at those points and would add benefit to be slowed and more detail added
It was also distracting with how often the FMC would think that the other characters voices or looks were always 'undertoned with something she can't quite place' I get trying to be mysterious but when this happens at every interaction it gets old.
In saying that, the story held its own and kept me engaged and interested. I feel with those changes, I would give it a 5⭐️
Ending on a positive Best saying I take away from the book: "Don't let the Shadows of yesterday dim tomorrow's light"
I received an eARC of Shedding Starlight from K.R. Blackwood and this is my honest review. This book was a great start to what I feel will be an amazing trilogy. If you love shifter, dark academia, fated mates this is the book for you. From the start I was pulled into the relationship between Nyx, Kieran, and Solis the push and pull was so entertaining. I found myself rooting for one and without saying any spoilers, I’m really hoping for some change in the coming books. The storyline ebbed and flowed with great character development and attention to detail. The author has a wonderful way of pulling you in and not letting go. I’m excited to see what’s next on her journey :)
I received an eArc of Shedding Starlight and it really had me hooked! I couldn’t put it down. There were many unique aspects to the book but it also tied back to known themes for those of us who love this genre, which I loved. There were times that I felt I wanted more detail and some parts felt a bit rushed but it didn’t take away from the overall story in my opinion. There was good character development throughout and I just wish the book was longer to allow for the author to further build the many different relationships that were introduced. I can’t wait to read the next book in the series- hopefully soon!
I received an ARC (Advanced Readers Copy) of this book, it is so interesting. I haven’t been able to put it down. The only reason it took me so long to read is because of life (single mom two kids), I have enjoyed the story so much, the references to the Twilight series made me smile. This story takes place at a Royal Academy for wolf shifters, like Hogwarts. The academic side is discussed a little bit. The world building is limited, but doesn't need a lot of explanation. The magic used by the witches to help the wolves, transform is unique. The magic the wolves are able to wield is very unique. It is a shifter series, they shift from human to wolf form completely. There is mated/fated bonds. I did enjoy the royal hierarchy, the dynamic between the FMC (female main character) and her two MMC (male main character) was interesting. The difference between the two MMC had me choosing one over the other. However the way the author wrote about them had me second guessing my choice. Trying to decide which MMC was the right fit and would help the FMC development in the story was fun. The FMC friends were helpful and added insight into the FMC.
I did have a few issues with the writing. Parts of the book seem like the editor missed. A character’s name must have changed during the re-writing process, but wasn’t changed everywhere. Some parts of the sentence structure would pull me out of the story. I am a visual reader, meaning that I see images of what I am reading. There are parts of the book where the description of the characters doesn’t fit the setting or action going on.
Darkly mesmerizing and razor-sharp, Shedding Starlight is a haunting blend of paranormal romance, mystery, and political intrigue that grabs hold from the first page and refuses to let go. The first installment in the Howl of the Ancients series introduces readers to a world where nothing is quite what it seems—and everyone has something to hide.
At its center is Nyx, a fiercely relatable heroine whose life has been shaped by rejection and invisibility. Shunned by her pack, burdened by a locked-away wolf, and dreaming of a freedom that feels just out of reach, Nyx is thrust into a dangerous new world at Cedar Hollow Academy. But this isn’t just another magic school—it’s a breeding ground for secrets, survival games, and star-destined power struggles.
The novel’s brilliance lies in its tension—emotional, romantic, and political. Two dangerously magnetic men hover on the edges of Nyx’s unraveling fate, pushing her in conflicting directions while the truth behind her origins grows ever murkier. With her magic simmering beneath the surface and forces beyond comprehension manipulating her path, Nyx must learn who to trust—if anyone—and how to wield the power she never asked for.
The prose is lush and atmospheric, with an undercurrent of cosmic dread and forbidden desire that makes every scene feel both intimate and epic. The author masterfully walks the line between fate and free will, building a mythology that’s as seductive as it is sinister. And while the ending doesn’t answer every question (intentionally so), it crackles with momentum—setting the stage for the chaos still to come.
For fans of Dark Academia with a paranormal twist, forbidden romance, slow-burn power awakenings, and heroines forged in the fire of betrayal, Shedding Starlight is a must-read. It’s a story about owning your truth, facing the shadows, and deciding who you’ll become when the stars try to write your story for you.
This book was recommended to me and I am returning the favor and telling you that you need to read it. I am one of those people that will blindly jump into a book knowing only the genre and this book was no exception. It was everything that I didn‘t know I wanted in a book that was advertised as a wolf shifter book, which I will be honest is a little out of the norm on what I read. And yes this is a wolf shifter book but it is so so much more than that. The way that this book had me questioning everything I though I knew. I thought I knew the direction that this book was going to take but I was so wrong. The twists and turns kept coming. I still am not sure who to trust. That may sound bad but there are so many ways that this story can unfold and it makes me that much more excited for the next book. If you don’t read the description of this book, then let me tell to start this book with an open mind. Honestly, I wouldn’t read the description because this book is one of those that is best going into knowing nothing. I know that might not make sense but trust me. This book is everything.
✨Shedding Starlight✨5/5🐝 This isn’t just a wolf pack story—it’s a revelation. Move over Jacob, there’s a new pack rising, and they brought witches, secrets, and a mating bond that will shatter everything you thought you knew.
Set in an academy that crackles with magic and tension, KR Blackwood delivers a world where loyalty howls louder than blood, and found family is forged in fire.
🐺 Nyx – The sassy, lone wolf rebel clawing her way into power and self-worth. You’ll follow her anywhere. 🌒 Solis – Stoic, protective, with shadows in his eyes and heat in his soul. Don’t cross him. 👑 Kieran – The arrogant prince you’ll love to hate…and maybe just hate to love. Savior complex included. 💅 Veronica – Regina George with a snarl. I coughed up hairballs every time she spoke. 🔥 Lila – Loyal, loud, and a southern spark of humor that stole scenes and hearts. 🛡️ Talon – The quiet storm, ready to unleash fury when his pack is threatened.
I devoured this in two sittings—tail twitching, page flipping, emotionally feral. KR Blackwood? You’ve got yourself a new faithful reader.
This is easily a five star read for me, 10/10, I will talk about this and not shut up about it. The last 30% of the book I had no idea what was going on but in THE BEST WAY. Shedding Starlight follows Nyx, and she is sassy and sarcastic and I LOVE IT. She has a backbone and there is one specific part (no spoilers) where she really stands up for herself and I was so proud of her. I felt so many different things reading this… there were parts where I was laughing so hard I’m sure I looked crazy, and there were parts where I was sitting there just trying to wrap my head around what I just read. Some aspects of this reminded me of a Zodiac Academy vibe, if you enjoyed those books at all. This book does have a love triangle, and I’m usually not a fan of those but this story wouldn’t be as amazing as it is without it! I would highly recommend this book to anyone who loves shifter books. The plot twists will keep you guessing and the hilarious one liners are the best.

Book review - Shedding Starlight by K. R. Blackwood
What can I say about this book... um... what just happened? Lol. I asked that a lot. But in the best way possible. There were so many surprises and this is the first in the series, so it's left me with unanswered questions that I NEED TO KNOW!
I let Alexa read this to me and it was primarily while I was driving. Then it got to the point where I NEEDED to keep listening so I had to find things to do so I could listen. I folded laundry, A LOT of laundry and scrubbed the shower so I could finish this book - and I do not like laundry or shower cleaning okay? That should tell you something.
The story starts by showing us the customs of a pack and how they immediately shun and completely disregard a member just because they're different. The main character goes from being loved and wanted to being hated and a pariah in a moment, just for being different.
The story follows Nyx's struggles and life changing experiences and how she adapts, manages, and grows. There are politics, a love triangle, shifters, twists, a murdery jealous ex... it's packed! Give it a go, even if you're not into shifter reads, it's not my go-to but I really enjoyed it!
Shedding Starlight is Book 1 in the Howl of the Ancient Series, and it is a paranormal mystery romance steeped in intense political intrigue. Are you intrigued now?
I really like the unique twists this book has. I thought the plot was really well thought out and different. I know the story was written in a way to raise a lot of questions and leave you guessing, and that it will all be revealed in time. I like when a book isn’t predictable and this one is certainly not. It keeps you engaged and wanting more. I have no idea who is good or who is evil, or who will do what. I thought this was a great set up and introduction to the series. I’m excited to do a reread and see what I may have missed initially, and I can’t wait to see how it all unfolds in the next book.
5⭐️ A wolf shifters, fated mates, why choose dark romance with mentions of Fae and Witches😩😩 I cannot express the amount of times this had me wanting to throw my Kindle, kicking my feet and giggling, and pulled at my heart strings. The only thing I can complain about is WHY DID IT HAVE TO END😭 I need more to devour, thank youuuuu🩶
"I received an ARC and am voluntarily leaving an honest review.” ✨ Shedding Starlight is a must-read if you love shifters, dark academia, and fated mates! The dynamic between Nyx, Kieran, and Solis—the constant push and pull—is absolutely captivating. This story hooks you from the very first page and keeps you turning the pages nonstop. I can’t wait to see what unfolds in the next books! 💛
this book I hands down so amazing! had me from chapter 1. I was on the edge of my seat throughout the whole thing. Nyx is so strong! THAT ENDING TO THO ! I CANT WAIT FOR BOOK 2! I CANT WAIT TO SEE WHAT IS NEXT FOR NYX SOLIS LILA AND TALON!
I devoured this book, to the point I couldn’t sleep before I finished it because I had to know what happened.
Acedemia settings, with wolf shifters, witches and magic the plot lines were strong and kept me on my toes trying to figure out the characters ultimate goals… even now I’m still trying to wrap my head around whether the villain is actually a villain or…
I loved the variety in characters personalities and development throughout the book too with equal balance of brooding mystery and banter.
Overall shedding starlight was a book that was easy read and to follow but not so easy you lose interest. I thoroughly enjoyed reading it
I both hated and love this book. Hated cuz love triangle and the dudes are brothers. And one them is …evil. But the other brother is giving bad vibes too. (I don’t trust or like either of them) And the whole mate between brother and her thing is weird. Like that kind of ruins the whole concept of mates. … But also loved it cuz I like drama. And NYC wolf sparkles 💖

Thank you so much to KR Blackwood, for the opportunity to read this eARC!! This is definitely a whirlwind of twists and turns, love and loss. There is a love triangle with a lot of mystery surrounding everything, really. It ends on a cliffy. There are parts that have me confused, that I'm assuming will be answered in the next book. I recommend giving it a read!
Hidden powers unleashed, two mates but must pick one- if the wrong choice is made it could destroy everything! Shedding Starlight is full of twists and turns and ends on a cliffhanger, I can’t wait to see where book two takes us!
Thank you for giving me the opportunity to read this as an arc!
There’s a lot of twist and turns going on in this book a little bit confused about some parts but it ends on a cliffhanger and hoping the awnsers are in the next book. Over all very good book!
I was given an ARC of this book for my honest review.
Shedding Starlight brings readers into a world of wolf shifters, romance, and a complex love triangle. The story follows Nyx, a young woman who is thrust into the hidden world of werewolves after discovering her own latent powers. As she navigates this new reality, she finds herself caught between two fiercely protective men—one who is her destined mate, and another who stirs emotions she never expected.
The premise of the book is compelling, and the author does an excellent job of building the world of wolf shifters. The pack dynamics, and the cultural lore surrounding the wolves all make for an engaging setting. The stakes are high, and there are plenty of action-packed moments that keep the plot moving forward. However, the heart of the story is undoubtedly the love triangle, which adds a layer of emotional tension, even if it occasionally feels a bit predictable.
That said, the book has its share of quirks. One aspect that may detract from the reading experience for some is the author's frequent emphasis on the sound of characters' footsteps. Whether it's the "soft thud of boots on dirt" or the "crunch of leaves beneath their feet," this repetitive detail is included a little too often. At times, it feels more like a distraction than a necessary atmospheric detail. It becomes particularly noticeable during slower-paced moments, pulling the reader out of the story rather than immersing them in it.
While the love triangle certainly adds drama, it also feels a bit formulaic. The tension between the three characters is strong, but it leans heavily on the "will they, won't they" trope, which can become tiresome over the course of the narrative. The main character’s internal conflict is engaging at first, but after a while, it becomes clear that the emotional tug-of-war is less about genuine choice and more about pushing the narrative toward its inevitable resolution.
Despite these issues, the book has plenty to offer fans of supernatural romance. The pacing is solid, and the chemistry between the leads is palpable. The ending offers some closure while leaving room for sequels, which is sure to keep readers invested in the series.
Ultimately, Shedding Starlight is an enjoyable read for fans of the genre, but it might benefit from a bit more polish in terms of pacing and character development. The repetitive descriptions and somewhat predictable plot points hold it back from being a standout, but the world-building and romance will likely appeal to fans of shifter fiction.
Verdict: A fun, if occasionally frustrating, read. Worth checking out for fans of wolf shifters and supernatural romance.
I finally got to star this one and boy am I glad that I did! We follow the story of a girl named Nyx (no last name) who was left with her pack with just a note with her name on it. Low and behold when they have the ceremony to unlock their wolf forms.... her world falls apart when she doesn't shift and is shamed. Her life becomes a swift downhill race until she's kidnapped and awakens at an academy with none other than a prince...
Nyx's world is filled with mystery and she's a girl who just never gave up. I loved watching her go through everything and still hold her head up high and remain strong. Enter our guy number one... Prince Kieran I had a odd relationship with him throughout the book and I am still just in shock at everything. Is he the good one? The bad one? Where does he fall? But we also meet his brother Solis. He's kind, caring, and seems to be in the right place and the right time. Are his smiles too sweet? His words to kind and knowing? Nyx doesn't know what to believe but man she probably has just as much whiplash as I did. This was a 5 star read for me and I highly recommend reading it. I will say Check the triggers before diving in too deep though as there's some things people may find uneasy. This book was addictive and never left me bored, and KR's writing itself spoke volumes. I can't wait to read her next book I have on my list.
Thank you to K.R. Blackwood for the opportunity to read her book as well as be on her street team. If you haven't checked it out yet it is available on KU. This is definitely a shifter book I can come back too! You'll probably need another read through just to make sure you didn't miss anything the first time.
This dark romance revolves around shape-shifting wolves. The story follows Nyx, a disgraced wolf who’s been exiled from her pack due to her inability to transform, leaving her to live a life of isolation. Her world changes when she’s captured and brought to Cedar Hollow Academy, a school for Alphas, where she uncovers her true fate and destiny. As her heart becomes entangled with two princes, she finds herself in a position where the fate of the world hinges on her choice of love.
I enjoyed the overall premise and concept, though at times, it felt a bit rushed, and there were some areas in the plot that could have been refined. The love triangle dynamic was engaging, and I found myself strongly rooting for one of the love interests (the other, not so much!). Her friendship with Lila felt natural, though it, too, seemed to develop a little quickly. While I wasn’t a huge fan of some of the writing, with a few tweaks, it could improve. The book includes trigger warnings and some spicy scenes, but it still gives off a strong YA vibe. If you’re into magical fated relationships and dark academia, this book might be up your alley. The cliffhanger ending was frustrating, though! Overall, I’d rate this 3.5 stars out of 5⭐️🐺. @bookwormbookspr @k.r.blackwood_author
“Nyx,” he begins, his tone measured, “while I understand your powers are new to you, we do not condone students being swallowed into black holes. You need to release her.”
This book was intense! I nearly devoured it in one sitting (only stopped because, you know, life😓). Just when I thought I knew where the story was headed..BAM! Plot twist. And not just a lil one, I mean full-on blindsided. I need book 2 immediately because that ending left me wanting for more 😮💨.
What’s inside this gem? Wolf shifters, witches fated mates, love triangle, and plenty of chaos. We follow Nyx as her life is flipped upside down: rejected by her pack and treated as she doesn’t below or is invisible (reasons revealed 😨), kidnapped, and thrown into her new world at Cedar Hollow. Here, enemies lurk around every corner, and she has to figure out who’s a friend and who’s a foe, and, most importantly, Stay alive! This story is brimming with secrets, heartbreak, and a touch of delicious dark romance, not to mention a swoon worthy golden retriever type….sigh. 😏

Morally gray, dark MMC or sweet and light MMC? This book has both! Forget why choose, this one is a must choose with two wolf shifters and brothers this book will keep you guessing. The FMC is a wolf shifter with hidden potential brought to a shifter school where she learns who and what she is.
The twists and turns in this book had me reeling. I couldn’t figure out who I was supposed rooting for and I loved it! I was kept on my toes and entertained. It was a very easy quick read with lots of fun characters that kept me engaged in the story. The shifter politics were ingrained in the story without becoming too tedious. This was an excellent shifter book and I highly recommend it.

Your journey here will be difficult, more than you might be ready for, but don’t let the shadows of yesterday dim tomorrow’s light.
You don’t get to carry the blame for someone else’s stupidity.
I absolutely loved this book. So much happened in such a short amount of time, and I was hooked from page one. Nyx is an incredible outcast heroine, thrown into the dangerous world where secrets and enemies lurk everywhere.
I am 10,000,000% Team Kierin. Every time he stepped onto the page, I was glued to it. Solis, on the other hand? Absolutely not. He gives me the creeps. He’s definitely hiding something and has been since the beginning. The vibes are OFF. I also adore Nyx’s two friends from school they bring heart and grounding to all the chaos, but, Lila? Hmm. There is just...I do not trust her. Something about her just feels a little too convenient, and I’m waiting for the other shoe to drop.
There’s mystery, danger, power plays, must choose romance, and so many twists I didn’t see coming. If you enjoy fast-paced supernatural academy stories filled with mystery, danger, and complicated characters, Shedding Starlight is absolutely worth the read.

I got my hands on an ARC (Advance Reader Copy) of this book, and let me tell you, I absolutely loved it! If I could, I’d rate it a solid 4.5 out of 5. The main female character (FMC) totally stole my heart with her sass and the vibrant dynamic she shared with her friends—one of whom really stood out to me, too. Watching the FMC embark on her journey of self-discovery and learn to stand up for herself was incredibly rewarding.
There were moments in the story that left me gasping, making me momentarily put my phone down in disbelief! The love triangle introduced an intriguing twist towards the end, and while there were a few spicy scenes, they were just the right amount—not too explicit, but enough to add some heat. I’m now on the edge of my seat, eagerly counting down the days for the next book, especially after that cliffhanger! 😭
Imagine being dumped on your Alpha’s doorstep as a baby, only to grow up thinking you’re special—until your shift ceremony hits and… nothing. Now you’re branded a ghost and tossed aside like yesterday’s trash. Then at 19, you’re straight-up kidnapped by the Prince and dragged to the most elite Alpha academy like you didn’t just spend four years in exile.
Nyx is back in a world that hates her, dodging death threats, mean girls, and—oh yeah—two Alpha brothers who are both convinced she’s their mate. One is dark and possessive, the other is quiet and intense, and neither is backing down.
I don’t read a ton of shifter books, but this one? I devoured it. Drama, tension, romance, and a heroine who refuses to be ignored. The ending was a little fast, but I’m fully invested in whatever chaos comes next.
KR Blackwood, a new and up-and-coming author, has crafted a shifter series that will undoubtedly become your new favorite. As an ARC reader for one of her previous books, I was already a fan of her work. Now, having read this book, I am absolutely hooked. I can't wait for the next installment in the Howl of the Ancient series, and I'm sure you'll feel the same way after reading it!
Embark on a journey filled with wolf shifters and history, lost family, life struggles, academy drama, jealousy, fated mates, hidden identity, royalty, and more. This series is a unique blend of these elements, making it a must-read for fans of the genre.
Meet Nyx, the fearless protagonist of this creative wolf pack story. Orphaned at birth, shunned by her pack, and then kidnapped by a Prince, Nyx's journey is one of resilience and strength. Her character is so well-developed that you'll find yourself rooting for her at every turn. KR Blackwood's storytelling keeps you hooked with its many twists and turns, making it impossible to put this book down.
Who doesn’t love a good shapeshifter romance with a little chaos
This isn’t my first book from K.R. Blackwood, and I’m glad to say it won’t be my last! I can’t wait to read more of her work because wow — she truly knows how to write a story.
I thought I knew where this story was heading… until I didn’t lol. It’s such a good read I was hooked within the first few chapters.
Everything about this book is absolutely amazing — the character development, the world-building, the introductions, the storyline, and everything in between. The FMC is a strong woman who slowly but surely finds her way, and you can’t help but want to know more about her and what’s coming next on her journey.
The other characters you eventually meet in this book will keep you curious and on your toes, which I loved. It made the story unpredictable in the best way. Just when I thought I knew what was going on, I didn’t — the surprises kept coming, it was awesome.
The author did a fantastic job putting together all the small details and creating one of the best wolf shapeshifter romances I’ve read this year.
If you’re looking for something with suspense, drama, romance, and supernatural vibes (among other things), this is definitely a book you’ll want to pick up!
*ARC* This book has some series triggers. Please check them before reading this book I received this arc from K.R. Blackwood.
A shifter romance fantasy. A story of love and hate. Royalty. A story of a girl (Nyx) who is shamed and cast out due to her lack of her wolf. Princes Kierran and Solis literally night and day. The constant push and pull between each brother with Nyx is hot. The love and hate. Of course her friends. I love the way the protect her and treat her like she belongs and loves her for who she is. At one point everything happened so fast and I could not put this down, I read this in almost one setting. Never saw the plot twist coming. I am excited to read the rest of Nyx's story.
