In this stunning collection of poetry, Heather Stewart explores the transformative journey of women in service - from wide-eyed recruits to seasoned veterans who've learned to navigate treacherous waters. Through mythological metaphors and raw honesty, she captures the essence of shapeshifting - adapting, surviving, and ultimately thriving in spaces never meant for us. A must-read for anyone who has ever had to reinvent themselves to find their true power.
Heather Stewart is a mother, wife, poet, and Navy veteran. She served in a variety of commands in a variety of locations as well as among the women who integrated female enlisted on submarines and an overseas tour to Italy. Her poems relate her experience of life and the Navy. Since retirement, she enjoys time with her family in a small town near New Orleans, Mardi Gras, crawfish, and growing her own tea garden.
Well, I always wondered whether one could write a poetic memoir. The question has now been definitively answered by Heather Stewart in her memoir covering the years she served in the USN. Not only is her poetry filled with every emotion, but each poem is also a "stand-alone" is beautiful to read (out loud or in thought). After the first few pages, I couldn't put it down. The poems immerse you into her experience and pull you along as you make your way through the ups and downs of her life. I was almost speechless when finished. It was a compelling read -- in a way I've never experienced before. I have to believe the experience of putting this all to paper had to be cathartic and cleansing. I highly recommend this book to anyone prepared for the journey.
Great read, it's poetry for us non poetry readers. it is very readable and heartfelt.
If you have a child or loved one in the military you will want to read this book. The author take us thru the overwhelming strangeness of joining the military, learning their traditions while growing and staying true to your self.
If you ever had a loved one serving far away and looked up at the stars wondering if they are looking up at the same bright stars, the author answers that question for you.
This is a book you will remember and be glad you read.
Pivotal. Powerful. Poignant perspective from one of the first women on a navy submarine. You can FEEL the characters shift throughout the poems (as 'sea pup' learns from the older and wiser 'sea mom' and the poet processes her own sense of wonder, betrayal, and eventual peace with shifting back to civilian life). From the literal depths of the ocean, these poems give voice to a feminist cry that many feel but keep silent. Plus, the writing is simply breathtaking--with lines that linger long after the pages are closed.
This is a great poetry book to help defend against feelings of isolation, low points and internal conflict as well as a source of comradery.
Whether this book comes to you as a familiar face or a stranger, it's someone you meet eyes with and share a knowing nod with and then go about your business.
