OFF THE GRID is a contemporary romance novella featuring a disgraced football player and the woman who refuses to take his crap.
Emerson Taylor has just been given the worst assignment of her career, and his name is Jake Lockwood.
Tasked with getting her boss's son to work for the family business, Emerson has little chance of success. As bad as she needs this promotion to keep supporting her sister, there's no way in hell this spoiled jerk would do it.
But she has to try.
And...okay, he's a bit pathetic. And sad. And maybe he's got more going on inside that gorgeous head than she's giving him credit for. Isolated with Jake and far from civilization, Emerson is starting to think dangerous thoughts, especially after he proves agreeable to the sort of bedroom games she likes to play.
No one has to know, right?
OFF THE GRID contains explicit sex scenes and is not suitable for readers under the age of 18. Discussions about physical intimacy, personal growth, and overcoming childhood trauma appear in this work. This novel contains no cheating and has a guaranteed HEA.
Beta Reader
“You made me like this ***hole so much. How do you do it?
“You have such a great way of zeroing in on real, internal conflicts and flaws people have that make them relatable and real.”
“I’m in love with her. She’s going to be good for him.”
I’ll be honest that I missed this was a novella when I signed up for the ARC and novellas really aren’t my thing. However, this was a fun, cute story that I’m glad I read - it was a nice, quick read between fuller books.
I liked the dynamic between Emerson and Jake. Emerson is older and is dominant, making a jerk-ish Jake submit to her - this is pretty hot in several open-door scenes throughout the book. Nothing extreme with the dominance, but just enough.
Jake is a broken MMC who acts out negatively because of it. The growth for Jake as he isolates himself in a rustic mansion in the woods with Emerson is nice to read, though does feel quick or like I didn’t get to really explore the depths of why he feels the way he does - but that is the nature of a lot of novellas. It still gave a nice arc for him and was interesting to read. I would have maybe liked a bit more exploration of Emerson and what she’s about.
For me this is a 3.5 ⭐️ probably but I’m rounding up to 4 because I know part of it is just the length of the story which means I don’t get as much depth as I really want when I read. So, nothing to do with the story or writing per se, just my preference for depth and story length.
This was an engaging, hot, and emotional story with a cute happily ever after. Definitely check this out for a quick read!
I received an advance copy of this novella and have left my honest, influence-free review
Short and sweet, but also a fully fleshed out plot! - Jake is a sportsball player who has recently been released from his team due to the activities he maintains in his free time: drinking heavily, seducing various women, and anything else he can get into. His dad really wants to get him on the straight & narrow, in the league or not. - Emerson works at a large company and is up for a promotion. The thing standing between her and financial security….Jake. Crap. - I enjoyed seeing the woman as the Dom, usually the female is the submissive in the dynamic. I also liked that Jake was so bent on getting Emerson’s approval that he was willing to release that toxic masculinity and submit fully to her. - - - Thank you to the author for the book!
Emerson and Jake were so fun to be with. I found myself wishing that the novella was longer just to be with them more. I didn't know how I would feel about the pathetic disgraced football player, but ended up loving it. The pace of his redemption arc was perfect and nothing that he did was ever out of place.
The spice in this book was SSSSPPPIIICCCCYYYYY 🌶️🌶️🌶️🌶️🌶️and beautifully written. The ratio between plot and spice were *chef's kiss*.
Thank you Madison Diaz for having me be one of the ARC readers! This was such a fun read and I definitely will be reading your entire book-ography.
Off The Grid was a perfect, quick read that I really needed! 🩷
I was hooked from page 1, and gotta admit that the writing was really great. I loved how the characters were built up. Em was a queen from the start, I admire her so much!! I love strong, dominant female characters 😍 And Jake!!! It’s amazing how Madison Diaz just made me adore him as the story progressed. Showing us that there’s more to a person than you see from the outside was beautiful. The epilogue was amazing!! It made me so happy.
Gotta mention the SPICE!! It was spicing! 😮💨🌶️
I just loved this book so much!!🩷
Thank you to the author, Madison Diaz, for sharing an ARC copy of your book with me, i appreciate it and I loved the read so much!
When I started reading this, I wasn't sure how on earth I was going to get into it when I really, really disliked Jake, our main character.
He sounded so obnoxious and spoiled!
But, I definitely should have learned by now, that the unlikable characters make the best storylines - and Jake really didn't disappoint.
When Jake was first introduced, I thought that there was no way that the author was going to manage to have this play out in any way that made me like him.
But the more that we hear about his backstory, we realise that there's so much more to his behaviours than meets the eye and the way that he manages to turn himself around was nothing short of spectacular.
Emerson had no idea that her boss was going to make her "babysit" his son, Jake, but this turned out so well for everyone as she realised that Jake was more than his reputation.
I actually also disliked Emerson at first because I thought the way she instantly flipped from hating Jake to dominating him without any kind of introduction to that, just shocked me a little.
But he definitely responded well to this and as the relationship between them blossomed, this became much more natural.
I loved that they opened up to each other - Jake about his childhood and triggers and Emerson about her past traumas.
This gave them much more depth and relatability which then allowed me to open up to them more and enjoy their journey together.
This is another fairly spicy read, but again, it doesn't overpower the actual storyline, just adds layers to it and the characters.
The ending was very satisfying and I love that we got a '3 years later' epilogue which tied everything together nicely for us.
This is the second book in the Forbidden Flames series and I read book 1, Over The Line, last year.
I hadn't remembered his name, but Jake appeared briefly in the first book and I liked this continuity.
However, there's no other references between books, so it doesn't matter too much if you haven't yet read book 1.
I do always love to (and recommend) that series be read in order though, just so that the character progression makes more sense.
This was a really quick read novella with a writing style that was easy to read and become immersed in.
I'm looking forward to seeing what comes next from this author.
Wowza!!! I ate Over the Line up in less than 24 hours so I had really high hopes for this one!!! We were introduced to Jake in Over the Line and I was so put off by his character because of how he treated Julia. As a believer in second chances, I was excited that we got a redemption arc and it was executed so perfectly!
Jake is the stereotypical athlete with a ginormous ego and a serious drug/alcohol problem that blew up his football career. He meets Emerson who has a no-BS attitude and won’t put up with his antics. Turns out, this is exactly what Jake needs.
Jake is sent off to his family’s estate for 30 days to sober up and clear his head and uses Emerson’s position at his family’s company as an excuse to get her out there to keep him company. Due to the guardianship she has of her sister and the responsibilities that come with that, she can’t turn the opportunity or the bonus that comes with it down. The plot line is sprinkled with the moral battle that comes with the standards Emerson holds for herself when it comes to the men she brings into her life and open-mindedness in terms of struggle and healing, which I think we can all relate to in one way or another.
With forced proximity, LOTS OF SPICE, and a strong, dominant, independent FMC, this was such a great read! I loved the pace and the plot to spice ratio!!
This was a super short novella, shorter than I was expecting So when I saw it was only ~90 pages and knowing there'd be spice I then thought there wouldn't be room for much else but I was pleasantly surprised by how much story there was! There were a fair few spice scenes but they weren't super long and drawn out, and were actually relevant to the story too for showing their personalities and dynamic with woman being dominant for a change and I really liked Emerson's personality. Jake's story was lovely to see, with him starting off as a bit of a disaster: a disgraced football player essentially drinking himself to death. But really he was a lovely guy deep down and just needed something to push him in the right direction to actually make the changes he wanted to and break the cycle. I loved the remote "cabin" setting and forced proximity too, it's one of my favourite tropes. This is the second book in the Forbidden Flames series but could definitely be read as a standalone if you wanted. Jake does feature in Over the Linee but only a bit as his old playboy self and this book doesn't reference the first at all.
Emerson meets Jake because he is an ex NFL star who just blew up his career with drugs, alcohol, and fast women, with his father needing him to join the family business. Emerson is a single gal who's been taking care of her sister since college by working her way up the same company Jake's father owns. Jake is given this ultimatum for Emerson to supervise him off grid in the family's mountain home to learn everything from Emerson for the company. They are to spend 30 days out there, no cellphone, alcohol, or drugs for Jake. Jake immediately scoffs and walks across the street from the business straight to the bar. Emerson gives him what for with her heel on his neck.
These two do make it to the cabin with forced proximity, and Jake wants to turn it around because Emerson made him hot all over. Jake has some spark of him wanting to see this through for her. Emerson's take no 💩 attitude is hot and turns Jake on. This was a quick read to watch the two fall for each other with a nice epilogue to put a bow on it.
Thank you, author, for the ARC! Release Date: November 15, 2024
Emerson shows her bada&$ self right at the beginning of the book. I feel like this is what pulls Jake to her. Jake if the family disappointment. He has gotten himself kicked out of football and now pictures are threatening to ruin his family. He has to lay low and detox. He only agrees if Emerson will watch him.
Emerson doesn’t know why but she agrees to babysit the playboy drop out. But maybe there is a winding in it for her?
This is a short spicy novella! I loved the power Emerson shows through the book. And how Hakes submits to her and needs the submission.
This is a quick read with a strong FMC—Emerson. She has grown up in a life of struggle and was forced to grow up a lot sooner than most due to her mom's passing and her dad having to work to help sustain the two kids. Emerson's whole life is focused on providing for her younger sister, and she will do anything to make sure they can be happy.
On the other hand, we have Jake, who has thrown away his entire life as an athlete to drinking and getting high. His passion in life is completely gone until his dad forces an intervention of rehab at the family home for a month AND one of his employees trains Jake to help in the family business.
Soo much happens in such a short time and it had feel-good energy to it all. Nicely written.
Okay, I’ve got to say—I totally agree with the beta readers on this one. Off the Grid was spicy, sweet, and way more emotional than I expected from a short read.
Emerson and Jake’s dynamic? Chef’s kiss. She’s not here for his nonsense, and he’s got that perfectly pathetic energy that somehow just makes you love him. The banter, the tension, the heat—it all works so well. And even though it’s a novella, the emotional layers hit just right too.
Honestly, I wish there was more. I wanted to keep watching their relationship grow and see even more of their connection outside the bedroom. But for what it is, it’s a great, steamy escape with just the right amount of heart.
If you’re into hot mess redemption arcs and strong heroines who don’t play games—add this one to your list.
This is a contemporary romance novella with a football player and a woman who don’t take no crap from nobody. It’s “enemies” to lovers and forced proximity, insta lust and love too. Emerson has to try to get Jake, her boss’s son to get into the family business but it’s a high task for her and as they both get to know each other feelings get stronger and they start falling in love. There’s overcoming childhood trauma, personal growth and it’s a spicy romance. It doesn’t focus too much on the sports aspect of the story but that’s okay for me, I still recommend. It’s a cute fun and fast read too!
This was a fast-paced, easy to read, spicy novella. We have a strong willed, feisty FMC who takes ZERO shit and I LOVED her. Our MMC starts out as a total asshole, but has a pretty decent redemption arc. This appealed to me for the forced proximity trope, as well as the fact that the FMC is older than the MMC which isn’t something I often read about! While I did enjoy this one and got through it very quickly, it didn’t stand out to me in any major way and I think it may have been slightly too fast-paced for what I tend to enjoy. Novellas are tricky and possibly just not for me, I don’t think this is any reflection on the author’s writing ability!
I don’t know whether I want to be Emerson or whether I want her to step on my throat. I love that a strong, AMAZING, but still real FMC like her is out there taking no crap and getting what’s hers. I also adore that Jake is out here … even if he is a world class (bleeeeeep) at first. I do love character growth.
This is a fantastic quick read with a big punch a lot of heart and five chili pepper spice.
Madison Diaz is a queen at building worlds in few words and taking you on a journey in few pages! READ THIS NOW!
Off the Grid was just the empowered female read I needed this week. Emerson knows exactly what she wants and Jake is more than willing to give it to her. Even though this was a novella, there was still plenty of character growth, as Jake goes from a spiraling mess to a man with a plan and Emerson learns how to be more a bit vulnerable and to allow others to help her shoulder the load. The spice was spicing too! 🥵 Thank you Madison Diaz for letting me read the ARC! 💜
- i love this novella, it was fun and cute story - it's good to a little Novella between fuller books - I love the dynamics that is between Emerson and Jake .. - Emerson is older and dominant - there are some pretty hot open door scenes throughout the novella - Jake is a broken MMC who acts out in a negative way . He isolate himself in a rustic mansion in the woods with Emerson. -it was a cute happily ever after with an emotional story
Perfect for a quick read, when you are looking for a sweet and spicy sure thing, with a strong female lead, and a man who knows his place! Babysitting the boss's manchild might just work out better than Emerson ever imagined. And Emerson might just be the woman that Jake never knew he needed. What happens at the cabin...may not just stay at the cabin!
This short Novella was full of Steamy and internal growth and so much more. The character growth and internal thoughts, chemistry, dialogues, narrations, all were wonderfully written. I loved each details. I liked the roles reverse, where a woman was incharge. It was amazing read. I would definitely recommend this book to Steamy Romance lovers.
This was my first book by Madison Diaz. I loved that it was a novella, but could have easily read another 150-200 pages of Emerson and Jake. Their banter and chemistry was some of the best I read in a novella. The spice was really good and I loved that it was a full storyline with plot and character growth. I will be continuing the rest of the series as it's finished.
A short steamy read but what I really loved was the power dynamic between Jake and Emerson. The way Emerson took control of Jake straight away and how Jake’s attitude changed through the book was great. Short and sweet and very hot 🔥 I loved it. A great read to get you out of a slump and one for all contemporary romance readers
This was a fast paced read. I loved the characters and their chemistry. I felt like the author paced the story really well, it didn't feel unrealistic. I love mmcs who may seem like a jerk but are actually big softies underneath it all.
Loved this fun cute short read. This is a novella. This kept my attention glued to the page. Loved the spice. Usually don’t go for any kind of sport mention but I actually loved the redemption arc. I always want more but this was a complete story.
I really loved this novella! I wanted to dislike Jake in the beginning but ended up loving his character. This was an easy and enjoyable read with great character development.
First time reading a book by this author. I was impressed with her level of craftsmanship relaying the characters' story. I loved the age gap where she's older and more experienced. The spice is spicing, the scenes were not to be read in public, purely delicious smut. Read this very hot short novella as a palate cleanser after some heavier reads.
Loved the empowered FMC, loved the mess of the MMC, and loved the plot! I didn't love the MMC in the beginning but he redeemed himself by the end of the novella. I've only read a few novellas but this is one of my favorites. It was a great, short read!
