Her Mortal Champion

Rate this book
All I’d wanted was to get laid after winning a tournament… How had I managed to screw that up?

Giselle Raynor isn’t just a normal chick with a boring job— But that's not true. She usually has a boring job. But when the leaves start to change and autumn takes hold, she becomes a knight. Sure, a renaissance faire knight—but a knight just the same.

But every tournament is has a familiar routine—fight a few mock battles, win some sparring challenges, and then make out with a pretty tavern wench before stumbling home and falling into bed.

But this tournament is different.

This time, everything is going right.

When Giselle emerges from the final bout of the tournament as the Queen’s Champion, a beautiful woman insists on buying her a drink at the tavern. They share rounds of mead and a passionate kiss—but the mysterious woman isn’t just cosplaying as a fae princess.

She is one.

Stolen away to another realm, Giselle has been chosen to serve as the champion of a princess who is desperate to defend her claim to a throne that should never have been hers. An unbreakable spell binds her to the Autumn Court, and to the princess who kidnapped her.

Bound by fae magic, Giselle will be forced to adapt to a strange world full of deceit, political intrigue, and more than one murder—will her skills be enough to help her survive in this kingdom of eternal autumn? Or will she be trapped there forever?

4 stars. This was so much fun. The world building could’ve been better and I think the main characters really could’ve used more development but I still really enjoyed this. The plot was entertaining, the romance was great between Giselle and Branthae and the smut was damn good. There was some great action as Giselle is Branthae’s champion and I liked how everything wrapped up. I can’t wait for book two.

Branthae is a princess from the fae Autumn Court kingdom. She is in need a knight protector as she tries to unravel the murder of her beloved brother and heir to the Kingdom. In fear for her life, she flees the chaos and danger of her magical world to find her Champion.

Giselle is seemingly a normal, human woman with a fondness for cosplaying a knight at the local Faire. But the magical fae sword fits her perfectly and she responds to the princess' whispered magic. Surprisingly, she is the chosen Champion.

Branthae and Giselle return to the Autumn Court, a land of magic with a deadly mystery to solve. Giselle soon learns that Branthae has tricked her into pledging her loyalty to her and the only way she can return home is if the princess releases her from her oath. Something the princess vows to do only once they have solved her brother's murder.

The romance is hot and heavy and the MCs definitely have chemistry. But the Branthae character is a little all over the place for me. Her fear at the beginning of the book is palpable but it quickly disappears as soon as she returns with Giselle in tow. All the previous danger magically recedes with only a brief explanation that those enemies respect her Champion. Those deadly pursuers are simply not around when they return from the human realm. And she doesn't seem to be in much of a hurry to solve her brother's death either. Her personality seems to ping pong a little from extreme to extreme.

Giselle takes to the magical world just a little too easily. And I was a little confused on how 'human' her world was. She talks about her job, driving, showers and even "Murder She Wrote" but at the same time she mentions that fae magic might be real. (At least I think she does.)

I deducted off one star because those types of inconsistencies took me out of the world a little bit. I'm a huge fan of Renaissance fiction. Knights and kingdoms, princesses and castles. I love all of those and I really wanted to love this book. Aside from those story quirks (let's call them), it is well written.

The characters are given depth and history and there are plenty of supporting characters to fill out the world. The brother's murder is told in a way that seems fitting to the complexities of a monarchy, with plenty of treacherous royals and conniving wannabes.

Overall I think this is a book definitely worth checking out.

"Even the greatest warrior's need sleep." Anyone else spot the problem with that sentence? Yeah, that's a good tone for the (lack of) editing in this book.

I find myself...underwhelmed. At first, I thought this book had so much potential, and I was hooked as soon as I opened it. Got me on page one, good. But then it got weird. So the princess, Branthae, is being chased and fears for her life when she escapes to the mortal realm. But when she picks Giselle and brings her back to her world, the threat seems to be lacking. There is no more urgency, no immediate sense of danger, and where are the guards who were chasing her?? I tried to overlook it, but it went downhill from there.

Branthae is so inconsistent. One minute, she is the grieving sister and the rightful heir who fears for her kingdom, and the next, she is secretive and easily angered and seems to care more about feeling vindicated than actually finding the true murderer. Like, she tells Giselle she needs to find out who killed her brother, but then seems put out that Giselle actually wants to question anyone, such as his former lover. It made me not like her, on top of her deception to steal Giselle from the mortal realm. Oh, and then she's thinking about the Countess and watching her from across the room, wondering to herself if she knows the princess considers her at the top of her list of suspects. Mind you, she pretty much accused the Countess to her face a few chapters ago. So yeah, I think she got the message that you suspect her. Are you okay, Princess?? I want to know if this character is mentally sound, honestly.

Also, the magical bond that allowed Branthae to bring Giselle into her realm and make her her Champion allows her some limited scope of Giselle's emotions and thoughts. And in one of her first POV's after their return to the fae realm, she thinks, 'I wondered briefly if she knew that I could hear her thoughts.' What? Why would she know that if you didn't tell her? No, you dumb bitch, she doesn't know that. And not telling her just adds to a deception I might have otherwise been able to forgive. Like, this relationship has some seriously skewed power dynamics that make it hard to root for. Poor Giselle is just straight up manipulated the whole time. A power dynamic can be levelled and a healthy relationship can come from it, but that isn't what happened here. Their magical bond was broken, and on the same day, Giselle decides to stay in the fae realm. End of the book. No time to get to know each other without the threats or danger or political intrigue. No seeing them get to know each other as equals. We're just to believe they live happily ever after, I guess.

But let's talk about this murder mystery. Giselle insists on questioning the former lover. Branthae reluctantly comes along, insisting it is a waste of time, and then upon arrival, skips questioning to go straight to accusing and arresting. Minutes ago, she didn't even want to talk to 'the slut'. Giselle feels understandably weird about this, because why does she care so much who her brother was sleeping with? And the callous comments about commoners just remind Giselle that not only is she not royal, she's mortal, worse yet. And what does Branthae really think of her? And their involvement? She questions if she is being used - duh! - and if Branthae will throw her away when she is done with her. Then the lover, Lurie, is found hung in her cell. Giselle is suspicious, but Branthae just takes it as confirmation that she killed herself out of guilt and doesn't care to question it. Giselle pursues it on her own, consulting with the healer/coroner, tells Branthae what she found, questions the Countess about it, and continues to insist there is more to the story. Well, chapters later, she is injured, wakes up in the infirmary, and one of her first conscious thoughts is, 'We never looked into Lurie's death!' And now I know the characters are inconsistent because the author is. She can't seem to remember what she has already written, or have a clear timeline for this 'investigation'.

I rushed the last 30% of the book a bit, because I didn't care. None of it mattered when it was going to change later anyway. Do we know who the murderer was? No, you'll never clearly know. Will Lurie and her secrets matter? No, we forget about her in favor of spice scenes. Will Giselle ever fit in with the fae realm or try to? No, but she will stay anyway. Will Branthae claim her throne and restore order? Supposedly, but like so many other things, you never see it happen. Branthae also supposedly has this dark magic she refers to (once) as Dark Glow that is like, scary and kind of forbidden and no one can know she has or they will fear her. Well, if you want to read this one, prepare yourself to know exactly that much and no more, because...what world-building??

Branthae is the princess of the Autumn Court who travels to another world to find a champion. She finds Giselle, who fights as a ren faire knight, and tricks her back to the Autumn Court, where she needs help solving the death of her brother and staying safe. As they work together, neither can deny their attraction to the other. As they work on solving the mystery, nothing is as it seems, and everyone is a suspect.

Overall, I was underwhelmed with this book. So much was never explained, and no real resolution was found. Maybe there are more books planned, but this book didn't feel fleshed out. There were also a lot of instances where the same word(s) were repeated frequently in a scene, especially spicy scenes. I wish there was more explanation of the magic system and why Branthae's is different. I wanted more of her past. Speaking of pasts, we hear nothing about Giselle other than she works in an offie full time and does ren faire on the side. No mention of family, friends, pets, nothing. She's just not that concerned about being taken to another world where she's expected to actually fight and protect a princess.

Giselle fights as the knight, "Sir Raynor".
She fights real sword fights with other "knights" and can't believe her eyes when she sees Branthae at the fair.
She hears her sweet voice in her mind before she sees her and is captivated by her beauty.
What she doesn't know is that Branthae is actually a Fae Princess of the Autumn Court and not just an actress.
She comes from another realm and tricks Giselle into fighting for her!
As Her Champion!
Giselle is overwhelmed and disbelieving and of course needs time to understand what is happening to her and what Branthae is asking of her in this other realm.
Branthae often seems hasty and erratic in her actions.
This made me doubt whether her intentions are what she says they are...

However, she is irresistible and everything Giselle wants and desires in a woman.
It's get heated, exciting, and so scorching hot when they are intimate...
I really liked this first book of the "Fae Champions Series" and will definitly read more!
Thanks so much for the ARC!

Her Mortal Champion is an enchanting tale that beautifully weaves together elements of fantasy and romance, showcasing Luna Lawson's talent for creating immersive worlds and compelling characters.

The pacing is well-balanced, with moments of action seamlessly interspersed with tender scenes that allow for Giselle and Autumn to explore their feelings. Giselle and Autumn each grapple with their own demons, making their bond not just a source of strength but also a transformative experience.

Overall, Her Mortal Champion is a triumph of fantasy romance. It’s a tale of courage, love, and the fight for what is right, all wrapped in a beautifully told narrative. I wholeheartedly recommend it to anyone who enjoys a captivating story with strong characters and a powerful sapphic romance at its heart. This book is sure to leave you yearning for more of Lawson’s enchanting world.

Meh, this was just ok. More like a 2.5 star book for me. The story started off good but then quickly went off the rails. There’s a murder mystery but the way our two FMCs go about trying to figure out it out is confusing and down right laughable in some places…how do you ask one person a question then automatically accuse and have them arrested for murder? There was barely any “investigation” just half statements, accusations, and then bam it’s all tied up nice and pretty but not really cause our mains just accept that this person is the murderer and that’s that.
The world building left you wanting also. There’s no back story to Giselle, none and all, and Branthae gave me whiplash with how her moods would swing one way then another. Supposedly her magic is different than other fae and not accepted…why? What? Why is it different?
This just didn’t really have any depth to it other than some good spice.

Get ready to embark on an adventure in a new realm with this engaging story. With the mystery of a murder to unravel and a princess to protect, both MCs present challenges for each other while their chemistry sizzles. Giselle spends much of her time as Sir Raynor in renaissance faires. Her prowess as a knight and her most recent tournament win draws the attention of a beautiful woman who wisks her away to new world. Meeting a Fae princess isn't all it's cracked up to be as she's tricked into serving as Branthae's protector in a world she is unfamiliar with and enemies she doesn't know. After her brother's murder, Branthae needs a champion she can trust to protect her. She doesn't know who was behind it or what their true intentions are but now she's thrust into a position that was never supposed to be hers, a leader.

Fun read. Needed a bit more development.

Plot was decent, could have used some actual build up towards the reveal in the climax, there was just all this mystery with not enough info to even make a guess, and the main fae character just sort of freaks out and refuses to listen to anyone who might actually provide that information. Then in the end someone has to sort of just summarize what happened to her after everything is sorted anyway and it has nothing to do with anything that happened in the story, and she's just like "Oh. Well, you should have told me earlier. Off with your head!" And then that's it. She's not a very likable character. Maybe of she had more development. There could have been more character development all around, but it was still a fun read. Good spice scenes.

"Let skill meet honor"

Our fae princess Branthae finds herself in need of a true Champion for her realm. Can she find a worthy protector for her kingdom, the Autumn Court?

Branthae stumbles into another realm and comes across a Renaissance faire where contestants compete in battle for the title of Queen's Champion. 🏆 👑🏹🛡

Sir Raynor can swing a sword but can she, Giselle, fight as a true knight?

I really enjoyed the characters and dual POV. This was an enjoyable read with some spice and a bit of a murder mystery.

⚠️ triggers for murder, kidnapping, mention of pregnancy (not the FMC).

Lots of very graphic hotness to read

It is a good book to read if you like lots of steamy details, and I love the concept of the story, but the princess is a bit too extreme in her mood changes, it's like if you have two different actors playing the same role. Her extremes are played off as her being a bit spoiled rich girl in a way, then deeply emotionally affected the next. I think the "champion" showed more consideration of character development, but over all it feels like the only reason they fell "in love" was because of all the sex they were having.

Overall? It was not a very smooth read. A great story premise but the delivery was more about how great sex makes you forgive people and fall in love with them.

This was a fun read with immersive descriptive writing, swordfighting and intrigue. The world building of the autumn realm was easy to follow. I'd suggest this particularly for readers who are okay with/looking for a big power differential - between kidnapping and mind-reading, the characters aren't on even footing, but Giselle doesn't really mind and the characters have good chemistry with some magical elements incorporated. 🎆 The story mainly occurs in the fae world, and I'd have loved to know more about Giselle in her own time - maybe we'll get to learn more about her in a sequel. 👀

I received a free ARC in exchange for a review.

If I was rating on the story I’d give it a 3, on the spice it’s a 5, so I’m splitting the difference and Her Mortal Champion gets a 4 from me. The story is interesting, but it felt scattered and jumped from one thing to another well past the first half of the book. It does seem to level out later on, which was good, but I never really felt like we got satisfactory answers or explanations for some things. I did like the setting, and the spice was fire so chef’s kiss to that.

I received a free ARC from Booksprout, but my review is unbiased and left voluntarily.

Good book,but..

Not too short , but sweet story. I enjoyed it and would recommend it to a friend. I gave it a 4 star however because some thing was just not explained clearly and it left some of the princess behaviors a puzzle. Perhaps the author could have taken a bit more time to also explain this unique power also? We the reader would have liked to be kept in the loop about the princess powers.

Giselle’s typical after tournament routine has a drastic change when she actually encounters a Fae Princess. Now, she’s in another realm with the one who took her and bound to the Autumn Court. She must figure out a whole new world and all that she must do to survive.

This book was definitely different from the usual Luna Lawson book I had become used to, having read a number. That said, great book. Less dark, much more world building, still hot. Who doesn't love a woman with a sword?? Definitely read if you like Protector tropes and a masc in armor.

FAVORITE QUOTE/QUOTES
"Will you be commanded, Champion?"

A LITTLE ABOUT THE BOOK/HOW DID IT MAKE ME FEEL
This book kind of has a time travel feel to it. Giselle on a whim ends up swept away to another world to serve as the Princess' Champion. There is a lot of political mystery in this book. And this is something I am not a fan of...I felt it was confusing. But I don't think everyone would be put off by this.
But what kept me going was the fire that was between these two.

WHAT I LOVED ABOUT THE CHARACTERS
I love a protective lead and Giselle was that. She was there to protect the princess at all cost. And she was willing to serve her not only as her bodyguard but also as her lover. And that got all the feelings involved.

WHAT I LOVED ABOUT THE BOOK
I loved the intimate scenes in this book. I especially liked the reversal of the person who normally would be taking charge is now taking commands. That was such a great spin.

MY FAVORITE PART- IF IT IS NOT TOO SPOILERY
There were a few. I think I liked the ending which I won't put here because I wouldn't want to spoil it. But it was dramatic and emotional and I really liked that.
And as I have stated already I loved the spicy scenes so much. This fictional couple was fire.

WHAT I DIDN’T LIKE
I just had such a hard time following the mystery part of it. Who killed the brother and all the people who might be involved got really confusing and I just had to let go of that part of the story
