R.G. Wesley’s debut novel The Strange Hour is a gripping tale of destiny and discovery, blending elements of urban fantasy and romance into an unforgettable journey of heroism and the enduring power of love.

Overall Rating: 4/5 ⭐️ Spice Rating: 2/5 🌶️
This was such an unexpectedly good read! I went in half blind in prep for the release of book 2 coming up within the next few months and i’m surprised (but also not at the same time) at how much enjoyed this book!
The Strange Hour was my first introduction to R.G. Wesley as an author & I was super impressed by their writing & storytelling! It was so atmospheric, so detailed, and overall very easy to read + follow along. The characters are lovable, relatable and everything between admirable and swoonworthy. I adored the gothic & fantastical elements of the entire story all the while maintaining its urban fantasy immersive-ness. I was hooked from start to finish and can’t wait to see what book two has in store after that ending. Also i’m most very much obsessed with both seph & alex both as separate characters and together hehe
And I wanted it all. His sunlight and his shadows, his rage and his peace, his lethal power and the safety of his embrace.
What to expect in The Strange Hour: 🗡️ contemporary urban romantasy 🗡️ chosen one (fmc) 🗡️mentor x mentee 🗡️ hidden / unveiled identity 🗡️ magic academy 🗡️ bipoc representation ! 🗡️ forced proximity 🗡️ unique magic system 🗡️ light horror / spooky gothic vibes 🗡️ graveyards, demons & portals 🗡️ found family 🗡️ semi-slow burn
I highly recommend this book for anyone who enjoys romantasy and loves to venture in refreshing & new takes on the genre!
This book was given to me by the author in advance of Book 2’s release, and while I appreciate the chance to dive into the world early, I had a bit of a bumpy ride with this one.
Let’s start with the good: the premise is solid, and the characters had potential—I genuinely wanted to love it. There were definitely moments that made me lean in, curious to see where the story was heading.
But here’s where it unraveled for me:
🌀 Chapter 5 — Our girl gets dropped off after a pretty intense convo with Alex, and suddenly she’s hit with the overwhelming urge to bury her face in his neck? I had to pause and reread that line. Girl, you just met him. That mad desperation? Felt way too soon and not earned.
👀 Chapter 9 — We’ve established Alex can sense monsters...so why didn’t he sense the one popping out of the ground in Seph’s house? Plot armor? Vibes? I needed some kind of explanation.
The book had moments that felt disjointed, and while the concept is intriguing, the execution left me struggling. Some scenes felt rushed, while others dragged or just didn’t serve the plot. I kept hoping it would pick up or tie together more cleanly.
I’m on the fence about Book 2. I liked the idea of this world and its characters, but I didn’t feel hooked—and for me, that’s a dealbreaker.
That said, I know every reader is different. If you love monster lore with a dash of romantic chaos and don’t mind a few loose threads, this might be your vibe.
4/5 ⭐️ 🌶️🌶️ I’ve read probably 200 fantasy/romantasy books in the last couple years and I still can’t believe I have read another book that was like none other than I’ve read before. This book is a dystopian fantasy book has some of the most unique magic systems I’ve come across and I absolutely loved it. I wouldn’t think this was a debut book either. The world building was excellent and the writing was such that I was pulled in immediately and could see the imagery that was explained through out. Our FMC Seph was awesome and it was just a great experience watching her grow from someone who wanted to feel invisible to someone with so much strength it was almost overwhelming- our MMC Alex is perfection and is someone worthy of Seph in EVERY way. The rest of the group was just an amazing cast of characters who fulfilled their role in sephs growth in an immaculate way. There are some excellent plots twists that you definitely don’t see coming and times when you get pretty pissed at the characters (another nod to the excellent writing) this ends on a cliffhanger of pretty epic proportions but luckily book two is right around the corner! An excellent debut book from RG Wesley and I’m looking forward to continuing the story!
R. G. Wesley hooks you from page 1! Her beautiful writing weaves a tale of graveyards, demons, and magic in an urban fantasy setting. A hint of dark academia meets demons and fantasy for an action-packed journey! This is perfect for fans of The Ninth Hour! Read it read it read it!

Review:
R.G. Wesley disrupts unlikely heroine Seph Hart's peaceful escapes to quiet graveyards with a healthy dose of chaotic action, chaotic magic, and a slow-burning, angsty romance in her debut novel, The Strange Hour. We find ourselves drawn into a plot filled with treacherous alliances and terrifying demons that Seph must confront as she discovers her identity and hidden powers while navigating a budding and perilous romance with Alex Eames, who is drawn to her like "a moth to a flame".
What I love about Seph is how easily other readers identify with her, especially when she visits her friend's luxurious cottage with its beautiful bathtub and wonders "how many books were reasonable for two weeks." And then there's Alex! Not only is he super charming, but he hangs out in a house with "a huge picture window above the sink (that) looked out onto mature trees strung with lights." But honestly, I was surprised by the library at the demon hunter’s headquarters. It's a unique, grumpy being that the residents identify as her, who responds to their requests and "contains at least one copy of every book that's been published since the beginning of written language." Who wouldn't want to wander into a library that could help you with your homework and find the perfect book?
Wesley has a knack for creating vivid descriptions that paint striking images. Whether it is the "ice-cold hand wrapped around my wrist, grinding the bones together," that grips Seph or the abandoned gas station, "with weeds sprouting through fist-width cracks in the concrete and shingles missing so that the roof resembled a checkerboard. The windows were spiderwebbed with cracks, and a sign proclaiming the place 'Handee Mart' leaned to the side." The scenes are brought to life, and the dialogue keeps you on the edge of your seat, thanks to the characters' unique personalities. I must say that The Strange Hour explores familiar themes found in the demon-hunting and angelic lore of The Mortal Instruments series. However, don't let that deter you; the pace is fast, and the tension is gripping.
R.G. Wesley truly knows how to blend exciting action with genuinely tender, passionate moments.
If you're looking for a new urban fantasy with high stakes, humor, and romance that will leave you breathless, you need to pick this one up. Check out more book recommendations below.
* The “Shadowhunter Chronicles” by Cassandra Clare (further series): If you enjoyed The Mortal Instruments, it’s worth diving deeper into Clare’s universe. * The Infernal Devices (https://bookshop.org/a/112672/9781442... Set in Victorian London, this prequel series offers a similar demon-hunting premise with a truly heartbreaking love triangle and exquisite world-building. The romance is passionate and definitely perilous. * The Dark Artifices: A sequel series set in modern-day Los Angeles, featuring new Shadowhunters and even higher stakes. The romance is mature and deeply emotional. * The Last Hours: Another prequel series set after The Infernal Devices, with more intricate magic and a continuation of beloved family lines.
* A Court of Thorns and Roses (ACOTAR) series by Sarah J. Maas (https://bookshop.org/a/112672/9781639... ): While more traditional fantasy than urban, this series is widely beloved for its spicy romance, high stakes, strong heroine, and enemies-to-lovers tropes. The magic is wild, the descriptions are vivid, and the chemistry is undeniable. It absolutely delivers on passion and peril.
* From Blood and Ash series by Jennifer L. Armentrout: This series blends fantasy with a very spicy romance, a compelling heroine, and a world where ancient secrets and powerful beings dictate destiny. There’s a lot of action, political intrigue, and a hero who is both dangerous and deeply alluring.
* Kate Daniels series by Ilona Andrews: This is a cornerstone of urban fantasy for a reason. Kate Daniels is a mercenary who cleans up magical messes in a post-apocalyptic Atlanta where magic ebbs and flows. The romance with Curran, the Beast Lord, is a slow-burn with incredible chemistry, playful banter, and high stakes. Kate’s journey of self-discovery and embracing her power is central. The world-building is phenomenal, and the action sequences are thrilling.
* Hidden Legacy series by Ilona Andrews: Another fantastic series from Ilona Andrews, this one features powerful magical families in modern-day Houston. The heroines are strong, witty, and their romances are incredibly passionate and often dangerous. The magic system is unique, and the descriptions are very vivid.
* Charley Davidson series by Darynda Jones: If you want humor and chaos, this series delivers in spades. Charley is a private investigator who also happens to be the Grim Reaper. Her relationship with Reyes Farrow, the son of Satan, is incredibly spicy, full of banter, and definitely perilous. The mysteries are engaging, and Charley’s voice is hilarious.
* Mercy Thompson series by Patricia Briggs: While the romance might be a bit less “spicy” than some others on this list, it’s undeniably passionate and grounded. Mercy is a coyote shapeshifter living in a world of vampires, fae, and werewolves. Her relationships are complex and perilous, and the series offers excellent world-building and thrilling action.
* The Raven Cycle by Maggie Stiefvater: While YA and less explicitly “spicy” romance, this series has some of the most vivid and lyrical prose you’ll find in urban fantasy. The characters have undeniable chemistry, and the magic of the ley lines and ancient Welsh kings creates a unique and compelling world. There’s a strong sense of self-discovery and humor woven throughout.
* Vespertine by Margaret Rogerson (https://bookshop.org/a/112672/9781534...) This is a standalone fantasy with a unique magic system involving reanimated saints. The atmosphere is gothic and vivid, and while the romance is a slow-burn, the emotional connection and compelling narrative of self-discovery are strong.

The Plot: This story follows Seph Hart, a young woman who finds solace among the quiet cemeteries of Gravesville, a town with more dead than living residents. Her life takes a dramatic turn when a seemingly accidental injury on sacred ground leads to inexplicable attacks. She encounters Alex Eames, a captain of the Aureum, an ancient order of magical demon hunters. Through Alex and his squad, Seph discovers her own latent magical abilities and her role in protecting the fragile barriers between worlds.
What I Liked: The story was gripping and easy to read - I finished the book in one day. I grew very fond of the characters and could relate to Seph’s feelings, insecurities, and thoughts. The book deals with current real-world issues of the power imbalance between the rich and the working class, making commentaries on how those with wealth, influence, and access to media or institutions can manipulate public perception and steer political outcomes, while ordinary, innocent people are pushed to the margins, silenced or scapegoated.
What I Disliked: I felt as though the villains in the story could have been expanded upon more / gotten more “screen time,” so to speak. We were shown why Edward is the enemy and I did dislike him, but I felt pretty neutral towards the rest of the evil group when I wanted to really hate them.
Favorite Quotes: “I wanted it all. His sunlight and his shadows, his rage and his peace, his lethal power and the safety of his embrace.”
“But when I looked into his eyes, I didn't see the warrior. I saw the scholar, the leader, the protector. The man that frustrated me, challenged me, wanted to protect me. Who had shown me things I could never have imagined in my wildest dreams.”
“"You have the influence and resources to shape world events and create the narrative you want people to believe. It's all about power and control. Meanwhile, the ones who are innocent end up suffering and hiding in the shadows."”
“The strength of everyone who ever loved me became the iron in my spine, the power in my limbs, and the courage in my heart.”
Hold on, because I have a lot of things to say about this book!
I went into this book because of the blurb and the vibe—and it didn’t disappoint. Magic, demons, demon hunters, found family, secret portals, and a dash of mythology? Yes, please! This book had everything that I love in a fantasy story.
Set in a modern-ish world (but not the kind with smartphones and computers), the pacing was smooth but immersive, and the writing had just the right amount of depth without being overly complicated. Also, LOTS of Easter eggs. And they hit just right when revealed.
The FMC, Seph, really stood out for me. She’s introverted, bookish, loves coffee, and has an impressive memory. Her reactions to everything felt real and raw, especially when she started discovering who she really is. She wasn’t the type to just sit back and wait for someone to save her. Sure, she had her moments of vulnerability early on, but once she tapped into her potential, she really owned it. Now the MMC, Alex — Whew. Morally grey and charming with that quiet intensity. He's instantly drawn to her, like instant lust but grew deeper and deeper. He notices the little things about her, protects her without smothering her.
Romance-wise, it’s subtle but it works in the context of everything happening. And while the spicy scenes were there, they were written in a way that didn’t overpower the plot, which I appreciated. That said, I wouldn’t mind if they turned the heat up a bit in the next book. 😏
The villain is a bit predictable here. But honestly? The rest of the story made up for it. The history, the betrayal, the unraveling of truths—it kept me turning the pages. This book clearly sets the tone for something much bigger, and I just know there’s more to come.
And that ending??!! I gasp!!! 😱 I was not ready. The twist at the end completely flipped the table, and I just sat there like, “wait… what just happened?!”
So if you’re into modern-ish fantasy with rich lore, demon/demon hunter dynamics, mythology, slow burn romance, and a heroine on a journey to uncover the truth and save the people she loves, then this one’s for you. I can already feel this series will become a new obsession.
The Strange Hour was my introduction to R.G. Wesley, and honestly, I’m surprised I haven’t heard more people talking about her. I picked this one up in preparation for The Book of Shadows (which I was lucky enough to receive as an ARC), and I’m so glad I did.
This is a solid romantasy packed with witches, demons, gods and goddesses, and plenty of magic. And while that might sound like a lot, the world-building is done so well that nothing feels overwhelming or confusing. Most of the story is grounded in the real world (modern day U.S.) but there are scenes and settings that lean into the magical, and I loved the contrast between those two realms. It made the story feel layered and immersive.
Let’s talk about Seph, our FMC. Normally in romantasy, I end up frustrated with the main female characters who are supposed to be strong and capable but constantly make reckless decisions just for the sake of drama. Not the case here. Seph is actually smart, intuitive, and capable and her independence doesn't come at the cost of common sense. She never falls into that tired "only a man can save me" trap. In fact, by the end, she’s the one doing the saving, and I was so here for that.
Then there’s Alex, our mysterious, broody, swoon-worthy MMC. He was everything I wanted from a love interest, and the chemistry between him and Seph is electric. Yes, it kicks off with a bit of insta-lust, but it quickly develops into a believable connection. The tension, banter, and emotional moments really helped flesh out their relationship, and I was rooting for them from the beginning.
There’s definitely some spice, but it’s more mild than smutty, which worked perfectly for the tone of the story. It adds heat without taking over the plot.
Overall, I really enjoyed this book. The writing was smooth, the plot kept me interested, and the characters felt dynamic. It was a strong start to what looks like a promising series, and I can’t wait to dive into The Book of Shadows and see what happens next.
This was a generally good read if you loved Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Supernatural, His Dark Materials (specifically The Subtle Knife and The Amber Spyglass), Constantine, and Lord of the Rings. I could see inspiration from all of these sources but was all still original.
The FMC Persephone (Seph) is not easy to love. She’s flawed, stubborn, frustrating, makes mistakes, but also goes with her gut, slowly opens to friendship, and speaks with brutal candor. Alex, the MMC, falls first and hard, and his devotion is immediate and somewhat unearned. It’s definitely a love at first sight situation and Alex decided at that moment that he’d do anything for Seph.
I think the reason this book isn’t rated higher is that it feels a bit too rushed. There is too much in this book. The start, her life in North Carolina, her friend Bri, her crappy job, the lake house, the graveyard scenes, the demons that show up, her trainings, and more all feel like a different book. Then, once she learns more about the Guardians, things plummet forward into a really great direction, but the plot feels like it needed slowed down and better setup for book 2. It was just a lot for a book that is not that long. The relationship between Alex and Seph needed more time, too. It was way too rushed. Along with Seph’s powers/gifts. It seems like she has no limitations. I’d like more information and time for her to figure it out so that the magic system is clear for the reader.
I’ll read book 2. I think the universe that the author is crafting is interesting and I want to see how it goes.
Persephone (Seph) Hart is a 26yr old woman living a boring, sort of lonely life with too many books in her small apartment & working for a boss she hates at a soul sucking job in a divorce law firm. Her best friend Bri, her only friend really, also works for the same place. Her mother and sister live with her stepfather several miles away, and her father disappeared after she was born.
Her refuge, visiting cemeteries in Gravesville (the aptly named town in which she lives). One evening, she has a strange encounter in the cemetery, leaving with a tarot card she finds on the ground. She returns home and falls into a fitful sleep.
Waking late - she rushes to work in a panic. Hoping she can still meet the insane deadline her boss had give her. She’s greeted by Alex, local police looking for another lawyer with the firm. She brushes him of to then encounter her very angry boss. After a brief altercation Seph has had enough and in a fiery display, quits her job. Bri (who somehow belongs to a filthy rich family) offers to send her to her family’s cabin to get away from things for a while.
Other strange events plague her after her hiatus, least of which is Alex showing up out of nowhere. She is whisked away and slowly begins to put pieces of her past together, parts that explain what happened to her father. Her future is uncertain and treacherous. But she’s strong. She’s smart. And she can take care of herself.
I was hooked from the first three chapters of this book. R.G Wesley's gothic descriptions of misty cemeteries won me over from the beginning. Her writing style is beautiful and I could easily visualise all the different settings and characters in my head.
As you read on and learn more about Seph's character you learn that her family has many secrets. I loved going on this journey with Seph as she learned more about her true self. The magic system was original without being overly complicated, which again, is a win for me.
I was very invested in Seph and Alex's, the MMC, relationship and was rooting for them. Alex is a complicated character with some big decisions to make and I thought the way they progressed as a couple was excellent.
I really enjoyed the horror-like scenes of monstrous beasts and demons. There was one point fairly early on in the book where the main character is exploring a crypt and it genuinely gave me goosebumps. Again, the atmosphere the author has created truly is a gift.
I would recommend this book if you are a fan of fantasy, romance, and horror! I can't wait to see what R.G. Wesley does next.
I loved this book and would absolutely recommend it to anyone who loves the romantasy genre. It has beautiful prose, delightful twists and turns, fascinating world-building, and, above all, a complex relationship that drives the story and immerses the reader. The chemistry between the two leads is palpable, and the romance scenes rival bestsellers like A Court of Thorns and Roses and Fourth Wing. And yes, they are spicy!
From the very beginning, I was hooked on Seph, the main character. Her personality immediately shines through in the first chapter, and it is fun to go on her journey and see how she develops and grows throughout this book as she learns about the magical world she stumbled upon. And Alex, the man who guides her through it, definitely makes it worth the read.
There are many reveals in the story that surprised me, and it was a blast to unravel all the clues and twists. Throughout the book, the author weaves together the plotlines expertly, and it works to create an absolute page-turner. Definitely a must-read.
I loved this urban fantasy novel and literally read it within a matter of days. The main character Seph was so relatible. I loved how the book showed all of her vulnerabilities and insecurities. You almost felt like you were emotionally connecting with her.
I loved how complex the MMC Alex was. He and Seph made an excellent pair and I loved reading the growth between the two of them. This book has so many amazing things about it from the cemeteries and the descriptions of the world to the magic and demons. I loved it all.
The romance was a slow burn but everything that I needed. It complimented the story and didn't overshadow the story which was what I absolutely loved.
For me , this is one hundred percent a five star read. That's because it literally held my attention to the point that I didn't want to put the book down. I found myself reading this while washing dishes and doing laundry. I just wanted to know what was going to happen on the next page so I couldn't stop reading it. I cannot wait to read the next book in the series.
R.G. Wesley knows how to write a book. I never wanted to put the book down! Her writing was very immersive, I felt like it was actually seeing the events happen as I read it! I really love how Seph grows into this badass character! Her character was pretty loveable from the start! All of the characters in this story were well written, each with their own personality and back story.
I did not expect that plot twist, along with how action-packed the last few chapters were! My heart absolutely broke in those last two chapters, but I honestly can't wait to read the second book once it is released!
this truly gave me supernatural vibes and I really did enjoy it! This was truly a unique read, and I really do hope that if you read this, you'll also enjoy the book as well!
What. A. Ride! This book was filled with action, adventure, Longing, forbidden love, found family, and magic the likes of which I've never read! The unique magic system was brilliant and the writing superb. I was drawn in the first few pages and before I knew it, I was halfway through the story. Great world building and the soft burn forbidden love was delicious. I loved all the little Easter eggs that led to later revelations! The character dynamics were compelling and the chemistry between Seph and Alex delivered all the emotional beats of the story. I was rooting for them from their very first meeting! I love the portal magic and hated having my heart torn out at the ending. I can't wait to dive into the next installment, The Book of Shadows, coming July 9th, 2025! Read this, then preorder TBOS next! You won't regret it!
this book hooked me from the beginning. Graveyards, demons, God's, goddesses, magic what more could I ask for! I loved how the FMC in the beginning just wanted to be invisible, then grows into such a powerhouse. The MMC is a perfect bad a$$, protecter, heart of gold character. I loved the world building. modern times but also other worlds. and a different magic system then i have seen.
some tropes I enjoyed in this book -magic -found family -hidden powers - gods/goddess - romance - some spice but minimal.
this book gave me Buffy the vampire slayer vibes. so excited to read the next installment the series The Book of Shadows. thank you for giving me the opportunity to read this arc book. great job for a debut novel RG Wesley.
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️✨🌶️ “Maybe that’s all I really wanted in life. To know that in the midst of all of the beings in all of the worlds, someone would choose me.” Wow wow wow! What a debut! R.G Wesley’s writing style is hauntingly beautiful and immersive. Seph is badass and lovable, and the side characters are well-developed. I definitely didn’t see the twist coming at the end, and the last few chapters are absolutely action-packed! The only thing that kept this a 4.5 instead of a 5 for me was the pacing felt a bit slow at times, and I wish Alex and Seph had a bit more time to develop their feelings. Overall, such an amazing and unique story, can’t wait for book 2!
I could not put this book down! When I had to put it down, I was still thinking about it all the time. The story is so unique in the fantasy genre right now. I could not believe the level of description and world building in this book. R.G Wesley makes every character pop off the page, no matter their importance to the story. So much so, that I had vivid nightmares about a few of the demons featured in the story. There is romance included in the storyline but it is the perfect amount to keep the focus on the true story and it contributes to the emotional side of the story. I am devastated by the end of this book. I will be starting the second book immediately as an ARC read.
When it came to this book, I found it to be a little confusing because I felt like it was all over the place. But that’s okay because it did feel like it was so full of action and everything. No one could truly be trusted within this book, and there was just so much mystery that was mixed into this book. Sadly, it does end on a small cliffhanger, but what’s for sure is that a tarot reading may be taken for granted, but in this book, it really tells exactly what was going on throughout the book.
wow this book hooked me in immediately. i loved the Mortal Instruments series in high school and this reminded me a little of that, though the storyline is definitely very different. i love the idea of demon hunters and our fmc getting thrown into this world she didn’t know existed. the author did an amazing job at foreshadowing without it being too obvious and kept me on the edge of my seat throughout the story. the ending left me wanting for more and so excited to continue the story. i can’t wait to get my hands on the second book!
An intoxicating and original urban fantasy / portal fantasy romance with unique characters and a great pacing! This is definitely for fans of Buffy and Supernatural. I was tearing through the story and I am absolutely feral for Alex the MMC. Seph has a stunning journey to self discovery and finding her "fit" and the cast of support characters is fantastic. A must read if you're a lover of myth, lore and spooky.
I read this in one day, couldn't put it down and now I'm very sad about not having more to read. Seph(FMC) is a refreshing take on the idea that there is magic in the world and how you would handle.being thrust into that world. Her development throughout the story is beautiful and so awe inspiring. I loved that the spicy content was building of the story and not just thrown around unnecessarily. Definitely waiting for book 2 with bated breath!
If I could give this more stars I would. I signed up for an arc of the second book of this series without knowing it was a second in a series. I am really happy that I did because this book was amazing! I absolutely love the found family trope and this book was heavy with it. The romance was just sizzly enough to burn but sweet enough to make you swoon. The camaraderie among the characters is wonderful. And the twists at the end blew me away!!! I cannot wait to start the next book.
Great storytelling and character building. How and why Seph was older than the others when they came into their power. Trying to figure out who are the good ones and not so good ones. As seph comes into her power, the more she is becoming a force to be reckoning with. Cannot wait to see what happens next and if she can save her love Alex.

I went on a ride in this book! I think I felt pretty much every emotion out there. I didn't expect anything that happened. When I thought I'd guessed something, I turned out to be wrong! If you are a fan of the Mortal Instruments but want adults instead of teens with more lore and twists and turns then this is a MUST read!
I liked how many Easter eggs this author wove into the narrative. Each curious happening leads to a later revelation. Seph’s got a lot of secrets even she doesn’t know about, but as you keep reading it all comes to the surface.
Obsessed. Who wouldn’t want to portal travel through graveyards, and be stalked by strange shadow men? And that’s only the beginning! This series is my new favorite! The magic is original in my opinion, and the characters are believable and lovable. Can’t wait for more!
