Dead Man Talking: A Supernatural WW2 Thriller

Rate this book
An outstanding African American Pilot is missing, presumed dead, at the end of a mission over the Atlantic in 1944. 80 years later, his granddaughter – Maya Hailey – teams up with a young history professor – Cameron Stone – to find out what really happened to him. Drawn by supernatural forces, Hailey and Stone discover that the young pilot was not on board his seaplane, nicknamed the Lady of the Night, when it crashed. His fate – one that will lead them to doubt the very people who were supposed to protect him - was even more traumatic.

As Hailey and Stone begin their approach towards the truth, dark powers become more and more deadly in their attempts to thwart them. As the search reaches its thrilling climax, Hailey and Stone not only have to learn to cross the racial divide between them, but also the bridge between the material and the spirit world, if they are to succeed in restoring George Hailey’s legacy.

Dead Man Talking – completed in time for Black History Month UK 2024 – is not only a page-turning WW2 thriller. It is also the ideal fictional resource to accompany discussions about racism, especially among young people of school and university age.

Dead Man Talking By Mark Stibbe is the first book I've read by the author, and I have another author to add to my list that I will be reading again!!

Going into this, I wasn't sure what to expect, I mean, I do love a good thriller storyline, but adding in supernatural elements and also historical elements, and blending them all together gives us a thrilling and engaging read that you don't want to put down!

What I enjoyed about this is Mark Stibbe writing style and how he effortlessly takes you on the journey with the characters, where you find yourself just engrossed in what is going to happen next. I also want to say that the research that must have gone into this as well to make the storyline, characters, and locations come to life!

I thoroughly enjoyed reading this one and can't wait to see what is next

This was an enjoyable mix of historical fiction and  modern-day mystery. The story follows history professor stone and Maya, the granddaughter of a missing Black American World War 2 pilot, as they search for answers to find out what happened to him.

The book is well written and nicely paced. It was engaging from the outset. There is also tension as they get closer to uncovering the truth as some people will go to any lengths to stop the truth coming out.

The story touches on the theme of racism both historic and modern day. I thought this was handled sensitively and highlighted the ongoing issue of blind ignorance and hatred.

The characters were nicely developed, and I loved the letters we got to see from Hailey's character as they showed life from a different time. There are some paranormal aspects, and for me, these nicely added to the story and brought the characters to life. The story was moving and an overall enjoyable read.

With thanks to the author and Love Book Tours for providing a copy of the book. This is my honest review which I'm leaving voluntarily.

What a brilliant book! Mark has done it again! My second book by this author and won't be my last! His writing style is so good, I liked all the characters, they were all interesting to read about and I was curious to how the story would play out.

Maya is a distant relative of George Hailey, a WW2 catalina pilot, his story was unknown fully and she wanted to uncover the mystery surrounding his death. His crewmates were found dead but he wasn't with them. I like how Professor Stone and Maya leave no stone unturned to discover what really happened. George's story is a sad one, an African American in a time where white men were seen as superior and African men were up to no good even if they weren't.

I like how Stone and Hailey investigate and I love how the photo seems to come to life which makes the whole journey come to start. I like the letters spread throughout from George to his love, Myra, they help to show his side of events, learn more about him and show what a good man he was. Scratch had a good owner, that's for sure!

I love the ending and cannot wait for another adventure with Maya and Cameron!

Dead Man Talking by Mark Stibbe.
Omg. I loved this book. I got into it straight away. This was a quick and easy read for me. The plot was different and unique. I did love Cameron and Maya. They were a great team. I loved the supernatural element in the story. I also liked the letters from George. This was twisty and gripping. I couldn't put it down. This is the first book I've read by this author. I will definitely be looking at his other books. I would definitely recommend this book

Here is my review for Dead Man Talking by Mark Stibbe

This was a really intriguing read and I really enjoyed it as it was a supernatural thriller bringing back a ghost from World War Two. George Hailey went missing in 1944 and a photo that Cameron Stone looked at with George Hailey and the rest of the crew on it, spoke to him and asked him to ‘find me’. Then his granddaughter, Maya Hailey, got in touch with Cameron asking him to do the same thing. Then she came over in person with twelve letters that George wrote to his father. Their communication had triggered other dark forces taking an interest and what they didn’t realise was that they were being investigated themselves and being watched. Then they get a terrific lead and head out to find out more details and find out about George’s last mission aboard ‘Lady Of The Night’, they are not the only ones to travel, their inquisitor does too. This is a terrific story and well worth reading as it’s not just a ghost story but Cameron and Maya are being hunted so they cannot find out the truth. Their lives could be in danger. It’s very well written. It’s possible some research was done for this novel to be written, there was a lot of information included in this book which made it an interesting story.

If you’re in the mood for a thrilling cocktail of World War II mystery and supernatural twists , then Dead Man Talking is calling your name…like, literally.

Absolutely loved this book! Mark Stibbe delivers a fascinating story where history and hauntings collide, taking us on a wild ride that spans decades and worlds. A very unique concept as well as an exploration of race and identity that are realistic to todays world. This story truly has it all!

The plot kicks off with Maya Hailey, granddaughter of an African American pilot, George Hailey, who disappeared in 1944. Fast forward 80 years, and Maya (teamed up with history professor Cameron Stone) sets out to uncover the truth behind her grandfather’s mysterious vanishing act.

Sounds straightforward, right? Well, think again.

Add in some supernatural forces, a plane called the Lady of the Night (with a backstory cooler than any car from the Fast & Furious franchise), and a whirlwind of racial and spiritual reckoning.
Mix that altogether and now we have a gripping tale where the dead might not stay quiet, but the living better listen closely.

Stibbe doesn’t shy away from the fact that Hailey and Stone have their own cultural divides to cross in their quest for truth, and the ghosts of the past are more than metaphorical here. It’s history, but with a ghostly edge!

As the pages turn, and they will (quickly), the stakes rise. Dark forces, whether from the spirit world or the flesh-and-blood powers that be, don’t want George’s story unearthed.

What starts as a historical inquiry spirals into a supernatural showdown, with Maya and Cameron forced to battle enemies on all fronts. I loved the chemistry/ teamwork between these two!

If you are like me, this will have you clutching the book so hard, the ghost of George Hailey might have to ask you to ease up. If you believe in ghosts *wink wink*

So, if you like your history served with a side of spectral surprises and social reflection, Dead Man Talking is your next must-read.

In this book, we meet Professor Cameron Stone. A man who needs to see to believe, a matter of fact kind of man.

Then he sees something he does not believe to be true, only, it is true.
An outstanding African American pilot who disappeared about 80 years earlier begs Cameron to find him: "Find me." Yes, you are right. This is not your typical WWII novel.😊

As Cameron comes across some letters from the missing pilot, George Hayley, to his father and team up together with George’s granddaughter, Maya, they head out on a page-turning search for the truth.

Of course, this is not straightforward, nor easy. We have our bad guys. Someone does not want the truth to come out. Someone high up somewhere. Someone with greater funds than I will ever have, and they are backing up an assassin sent to stop the hidden to get out.🫣

I quite like the characters in this setting, even the bad guys a little, because I think this bookis well written. Not to mention our fierce Norwegian woman, Birgit, and let me tell you, she does not mess around.

As they are trying to comprehend what is going on, let alone understand, they are being hunted down. What kind of secret can this possibly be that is worth taking lives for? And then you are done reading the book already, because it has a good flow.😊

Will they survive this search for the truth? Will they find out what happened to Mayas grandfather?
Well, you just have to read the book, then. 😊

A Dead Man Talking by Mark Stibbe is the second of the authors books I have read. As with the previous book, this one has a supernatural element to it.

The story is set across 2 time periods with the main scenes taking place in 2024 and others through letters providing flashbacks take place in 1944. Cameron Stone is examining a photograph taken during World War 2 and is of George Hailey, who was an airman during the war, and his dog. Both George and his dog come alive and George asks Cameron to find him. Cameron teams up with Maya Hailey, Georges granddaughter, and the pair begin an investigation that has a hidden conspiracy putting everyone’s lives in danger.

As a fan of the first book I read, House Of Dreams, I definitely wanted to read this new novel. I love how Mark mixes thriller, mystery, and the supernatural together to make for exhilarating stories that you can’t put down. The character development was brilliant throughout and knowing that this is the start of a series I really hope some of the side characters join Cameron and Maya in the future books as some of them, such as Siobhan, help add something special to the overall story. I also liked how Mark has blended Segregation into the overall story in a way that is respectful while showing the potential impact this had during the war and also its impact across different countries, specifically America and Ireland.

This is a series I will definitely be continuing and is a must for lovers of thrillers. I’m sure it won’t disappoint.

What an incredible read! I was hooked from the first chapter (which is a common trend with books by Mark Stibbe!) and I have read the last page feeling so many emotions. I don't want to spoil the story for people who have not read (although I strongly urge you too) however felt the ending was as fitting and fulfilling as one could get considering the outrageous circumstances befitted to the 'disappearance' of George Hailey.
I was even more enveloped in the story knowing it was loosely based around that of a black solider, Wiley Harris, however sadly the events are very not a loose description of the atrocious racism faced by many servicemen in the RAF, who faced a greater threat from some of their own comrades than the fighting opposition. The topics discussed around racism are unfortunately still ongoing (albeit it in different forms) which was also tied in to the story with the sickening injustice and murder of George Floyd.

Mark Stibbe has such a beautiful way with words and I always know any book penned by him will be one to grip my heart and soul, and will be a takeaway for the future that will leave me asking myself questions and doing my own research.

Thanks so much to @lovebookstours for providing me with another marvellous opportunity to read and review @markstibbeauthor book and I eagerly await the next masterpiece.

This story dives right in from the very first chapter when Professor Cameron Stone is looking at a photograph in which one person seems to come to life. Of course that can’t be true so he asks his colleague if they notice anything strange about the photo but to them it’s nothing spectacular. Professor Cameron then hears the words “find me” and so the story starts.

African American pilot George Hailey’s crew were all found dead but he wasn’t amongst them. Now Cameron along with George’s granddaughter, Maya, set out on a mission to find out what happened to him.

This book deals with many themes; history, ghosts, heartache, war, racism, real life and love to name a few. Beautifully written and with the inclusion of letters George wrote to Myra, his one true love, you will be swept up in the emotion of the story.

This is the 2nd book over read by Mark Stibbe I’ve read and it won’t be my last.

So this isn’t my first book by this author. And after reading this - it definitely will not be my last. Mark has such a way of writing that you cannot help but get sucked in immediately. He creates characters that you want to continue reading about and a story full of depth. It’s a wonderful experience getting lost in the book.

I loved the mix of genre within this book. The hints of supernatural and packed full of historical information the amount of research that has gone in to the book must be huge. I love that it doesn’t shy away from the harder topic of historical and present day racism too and how throughout history we still as a society struggle with this as a problem.

I don’t want to give too much of the actual plot away as it just an enjoyable read from start to finish. But if you like a book that has a bit of everything, characters that you can’t help but love and a mix of thriller, history and supernatural you are in for a treat!

Having read the outstanding House of Dreams by the same author, I was looking forward to this read, and it certainly did not disappoint.

I'm a huge history and historical fiction fan, in particular war novels, so Dead Man Talking instantly peaked my interest.

It's the story of a missing African American World War II pilot, George Hailey, and a modern day search for the truth as George's relative, Maya, with the help of history professor, Cameron, delve into the pilot's disappearance.

Want to know more? Be sure to pick your copy up.

So all in all, I really enjoyed this read, another job well done for this author. It's a tale that blends history with the supernatural in a brilliant historical thriller full of secrets, mystery and intrigue to weave an atmosphere of suspense.

I read this in three sittings.

There was so much to love about Dead Man Talking by Mark Stibbe. Being the first book I’ve read by this author I wasn’t sure what to expect and ended up being hooked from the very start and got completely lost in this captivating story about George Hailey - a missing African American pilot who was presumed dead along with his whole crew when their Catalina crashed, lost to the bottom of the sea. When the Catalina is found many years later it’s discovered George wasn’t on board and an investigation into the past by his granddaughter Maya and history professor Cameron Stone along with other great characters uncovers an even more sad ending for George and also putting them all in danger. I felt really emotional reading this book, so angry at the injustice George faced just by the colour of his skin. Honestly went through so many emotions throughout, Mark is a fantastic storyteller.

This is a very mixed bag of a book. There are supernatural elements, missing people, injustices, mysteries, rogue agents, and loads more - it just doesn’t stop surprising you.

I loved George’s story, I was fully invested within pages. Maya wants to find out what happened to him, did he die on the Catalina with the rest of his crew? Stone also wants to find out but for a different reason - because he asked him to. This is where it gets really interesting, just as you think it’s making sense, it doesn’t. There are also letters from George inserted between the chapters, talking to his dad first then his great love. They’re such an important and interesting part of the story that are just beautiful. The story of George takes Stone and Maya to Ireland, England and France, finding more twists and friends along the way.

If you think I’m talking in riddles, you’ll just have to go and read the book for yourself!

This story had such an interesting plot that once the story got going it really draws you in. I found it both interesting and heartbreaking.
Both Cameron Stone and Maya Hailey carry the story well and are both fully fleshed characters. They really do make a great team.
The supernatural element brings another dimension to the story which I really enjoyed. All in all a great read that in parts will stay with you for some time after.
This is the first book in a series and I am very much looking forward to seeing what comes next.

This was a very emotive read while having all those elements of a supernatural thriller. This was due to the underlying theme of racism and this has been done is a very respectful way that it is not the main focus of the novel. I loved the fact that we had a moving picture - which for any Harry Potter fan made my wee heart jump for joy - and that this was the beginning of the story. Once this has happened we then go on a meandering journey with Cameron Stone and Maya Hailey, chasing the mystery of her grandfather George Hailey with all of it's twists and turns. These characters and all of the side characters were well researched and formed that we can see that they will last the test of time in a new thriller series. The locations chosen for this story to center around some wonderful places and I am hoping that Mark Stibbe continues to use these types of locations in the future. Well Done Mark Stibbe bring on the next one.

I have a lovely growing collection of books by this author now and I can confirm that I have loved every one so far!
Stibbe has a way of writing that just draws you right into from start to finish and has me totally mesmerised for the whole book.....and this was no exception.

This book was slightly different in some ways, to the previous books I've read - but in many other ways, is very similar.
We're still focussing on historical content - this time, WW2 - but this book had a much more paranormal slant and with a good dose of thriller too.

I absolutely love Mark's writing and can't help becoming immersed in the beautiful, descriptive prose which completely transports us to our unique settings.

I really enjoyed getting to know our main characters and thought it was great that we meet them as they investigate a case that's close to Hailey's own heart.
I liked the way they worked well together and with a well developed dynamic and relationship which but throughout the book.

I'm not a huge reader of the historical genre - but I have to say that these books really hold my attention far better - especially with this mix of genres that worked so well.

I believe that this will form part of a new and exciting series - The Case Files Of Hailey And Stone - and am already looking forward to seeing where Mark will take us all in the next book.
