Raised in his father’s image, Liam was destined to become a monster. As the king’s executioner, his life was a relentless cycle of violence and death, his heart hardened by the gruesome legacy passed down by his father. But everything changed when he stumbled upon Dustin, a boy who miraculously survived the brutal hunter attacks on a fallen kingdom.
Returning the boy to the Valkyrie Kingdom, Liam learns who he is. As he grapples with his own identity and the shadows of his past, he starts spiraling and leaves the Valkyrie Kingdom. Years later, when Liam returns to the kingdom, he discovers Dustin, the boy he saved, has grown into a man, his innocence replaced by a burning hatred for him.
Liam now faces the grim challenges of his role with the added burden of Dustin’s animosity. Struggling with his own inner demons and the weight of his actions, he teeters on the brink of madness. Yet, unbeknownst to Liam, the boy he once saved, now a man consumed by vengeance, will become the one to save him from the darkness within.
In a twist of fate, Dustin’s hatred transforms into a complicated bond, forcing both men to confront their deepest fears and darkest secrets. Together, they fight for redemption, ultimately discovering their fates are inextricably linked. As Dustin saves Liam from his own self-destruction, Liam, in turn, offers Dustin a chance at healing and forgiveness. Their destinies, once separate, are now intertwined, holding the power to reshape their world and challenge the very nature of the monsters they were taught to become.

3.5 stars! Its a good book in portraying Liams backstory. The chapters are broken down by various characters. I would say Liam and Dustin cover most of the chapters but Claire, Clarice, and maybe someone else narrarate a few. This really isn't a deep love story about 2 ppl. But we do see Liams relationship w Claire bloom, then his relationship w Dustin. We also get the friendship of Liam and Vivian. Vivian is the mother of the Gannons mate mentioned in the other books, the one that refused him.
Storyline: The book has some lenghty time jumps in the 1st part of the book as well as flashbacks. I found it a bit difficult to keep up. Eventually this settled down. The reader learns of the abuse from Liams father growing up. Of Liam killing a woman on his father command (Vivian the witch's mother). And of Liam killing daddy when he attempt/or succeeded in raping Clarice. We watch the love btwn Liam and the kings sister, Claire. Liam impregnated Claire and plan to marry, marking her his chosen mate. Notice I didn't say fated mate. Claire's fated mates comes across days before the wedding which postpones the affair. While Liam is off on official business with the king and his other guards, Claire, the unborn baby, and the fated mate of hers is murdered at the castle. The kings and guard come home and basically Kyson and Liam lose their heads for a stretch. The thread of Dustin's saga is interwoven throughout the book as well. Liams finds Dustin as a child while scouting a pack town that was decimated by the hunters. He saves him and unknowingly kills Dustin's father thinking he was a Hunter. Dustin went from seeing Liam as a savior to despising him for killing his dad. Eventually his hatred turns to understanding...and after Claire's death it becomes more. The love story parts are pretty glossed over. We see other past events mentioned in other books play out in this one- Liams is the one that finds the Landeena kingdom has been decimated by the Hunters and the king and queen killed. Liam sleeps with Sia, his friend Vivian's daughter. Sia is also the mate of Gannon which Liam didn't know about. Liam and Gannon killing Sia. All in all a good book bc I'm invested in the characters. Also, Liam isn't as crazy as his comes off in the other books. Which was sorta a letdown.

This prequel answers so many questions about the situation before the series. It is another example of such an intense storyline that truly allows you into the characters. It simply endears the characters even more deeply than with just the series. The story just as enthralling and interesting as the series. It’s a page turning journey that just makes you realize the depth of the characters! Definitely a reread in the future and a story I find completely interesting!
Loved how I was able to see Liam’s character be so in love and happy. Hated what happened and how he was broken. Wish there had been more Dustin and Liam romantic time. Still loved the psycho with his multiple personalities.
