A Devil of Vitality always stalks the one they love.
Zane Solace is determined to make himself irreplaceable.
All his life, he's either been a second choice or someone's backup plan. Zane's promised himself that won't be the case ever again, and the best way to achieve that goal is by becoming the Royal Physician of the Imperial family. As a senior at Vail University, he's close to his goal, but juggling his responsibilities among the Retinue, his duty toward the Imperial Heir, and keeping his brother out of prison keep him busy. The last thing he needs is another distraction, especially one in the shape of Pavel, a fellow Retinue member who suddenly seems far too interested in Zane for comfort.
Pavel Hart is desperate to be seen.
He's spent the better part of the last five years standing on the sidelines, waiting for the perfect opportunity to make himself known. When he finds out Zane has finally ended things with his other lovers, he realizes that perfect time has come, and he isn't willing to take things slow or gently. Pavel has wanted Zane for a lot longer than anyone realizes, and that want has grown into a cloying obsession even he can't control. He'll seize every opportunity he can to bring Zane closer to him, to make him accept that the two of them belong together and always have. Even if Zane can't seem to remember the past they once shared or the promises they once made.
Zane isn't willing to be used and discarded ever again, and the last thing he wants is to trust the wrong person based on pretty words--no matter how great the chemistry in the bedroom is. He's torn between his growing interest in a man he hadn't paid any attention to in the past and his goal. When the Imperial Heir and his brother both cause issues, Zane has to decide if he should lean on Pavel or abandon him.
No matter what he chooses, one truth remains. Pavel isn't willing to let go, and it isn't that easy to escape the devil.
Trigger Warning: This is a stand-alone dark romance which means there are many themes that some might find disturbing. Some of these include, but are not limited to, dub-con, violence, an obsessed stalker who doesn't hold back once he's made his presence known, and explicit sexual content not suitable for all readers. Please be sure to read the Author's Note for a complete list of warnings! HEA guaranteed! Though this book takes place on the same planet as the previous in the series, each of these is a stand-alone.
Librarians, please don't add books. I stay up to date and add them myself and have ended up with many multiple copies because others add them later. Thank you!

I started this story not liking Zane, but I hoped I might change my mind. Spoiler: I didn’t.
Let's talk about Pavel first because I totally loved him. He’s unhinged, super powerful, and genuinely hilarious. Seriously, he made me laugh a ton. He deserved way better than Zane.
As for their relationship, it just didn’t have any spark. There was a little chemistry at first, but Zane sucked the life out of it fast. This book just deepened my dislike for Zane, and honestly, he didn’t deserve a whole storyline. How he treated Pavel and how long he took to finally commit made me want to punch him. Plus, the constant reminders of Zane’s past hook-ups during the steamy scenes just killed the vibe for me.
Zane is the kind of character I really can’t stand. He wanted to be desired and loved but did everything to mess it up. I couldn’t care less about his backstory, and he didn’t deserve Pavel. Honestly, if he had just stayed single, I would’ve been a lot happier.
In the end, you might still enjoy this book if you’re into constant mentions of exes or hook-ups, even in the heat of the moment, or if you like the whole back-and-forth thing where one character can’t make up their mind. But for me, it just didn’t work, especially since I was already not a fan of Zane, which only got worse as I read on.
By now, every book reads a bit like the one before it. And yet I can't get enough of them. There are drugs involved, and with any other author I would be bored to death by now. And even though these stories all follow the same pattern and are always drawn out, and the inner monologues repeat themselves and drive me crazy, I find it difficult to put these books down. Goodness. I'll keep it short. I've already given this series enough praise in the past, even though I didn't like every story equally. In this one, I found it extremely difficult to understand Zane. His craziness doesn't quite register with me. But that's made up for by Pavel. My goodness, I love him. Yes, he's completely bonkers like all these characters, but he's also sooooo cute. His patience is out of this world, and when he loses it, he's sooooo possessive and magnificent. That should suffice. Please note the triggers at the beginning of the book; these are not to be taken lightly.
He didn’t struggle with focusing because of his brain. He struggled because of his dick. Spreading his thighs wide, he glared down at the offending, protruding member of his body. The one part of himself that seemed to never want to listen to reason. 🤭💗🤭
Unwanted. Unimportant. Again. For once, he just wanted to be someone’s main choice. 🥺💔😢
“Why?” “Because you’re important to me and I want to show it. Acts of affection are surprisingly second nature to me. I wasn’t joking. I’ve fantasized about doing tiny acts like this just as much as I have about fucking you on my cock. I want to make you breakfast in the morning and kiss you goodbye at the car before we head off to our separate classes. I want to meet for lunch and gossip about all the idiots we’ve had to endure so far that day. I want to take you to nice candle-lit dinners, go on long drives on the coast, and come home to matching pajamas.” 🫠🌹🫠
I think Pavel needs to be crowned as the king of patience! I love how he waited for YEARS to make his move; the calculation, the manipulation, the stalking... He may just be the most devious and single minded Devil in this whole series.
Zane is so extremely prickly but after testing Pavel and pushing him relentlessly, I loved seeing the softer side of him.
I also really enjoyed the backstory for these two. Their shared history was really interesting.
The tension that came with the whole Lyra situation really stressed me out, but I'm hoping we see the resolution of it in Ledger or Yuze's story?
I'm also confused about Aodhan and Titus. Do they have a story that I've missed or forgotten about? They really intrigued me and it's bugging me that I feel like I've forgotten them!
Every book I read of Chani's I believe its impossible to become more obsessed with her characters and universe and again I'm proven wrong. I loved the dynamics of Pavel and Zane, the push and pull, the darkness and suprising sweetness of this couple. The spice was *chefs kiss* 😍
I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
”He was going to make Zane see him. And he was going to enjoy every single moment of it.”
Pavel is OBSESSSSEDDDDDDD with Zane - he can’t help it, it’s just his nature. He’s adorably unhinged and a true romantic, he just has an unconventional way of courting his beau.
Zane wants a partner who is OBSESSED with him and only him. He wants them to be desperate for him. He has never felt like someone’s first choice, so when Pavel is saying he will give Zane exactly what he wants, Zane has a hard time believing it.
I love the moment when Pavel is thinking, “oh shit my obsession has gone too far 😬” and Zane is like, “you’ve gone exactly far enough 😍”
As always, Chani takes me from “this guy is a little too nuts” to “they are so cute and perfect together 🥰”. This was the perfect mix of filthy, kinky, cute and darkly funny.
Tropes: childhood friends to lovers, amnesia, marriage of convenience Feels: 1/5 Steam*: 3/5 Kinks: Noncon, dubcon, primal play, bondage, breath play, sadism, edging, toys, exhibitionism Angst: low HEA: yes Pairing: MM Triggers/potential icks/content warnings: violence, stalking, coercion, bad relations with adoptive family, murder, drugging Cheating between MCs: No Any cheating: No Other person drama: in order to describe the other person drama, I have to be quite spoilery. So spoiler warning!! When Pavel and Zane were kids, they were at the same orphanage and they were very very close. They declared themselves family. Then Zane got adopted and lost his memory from before. Pavel got adopted too by another wealthy family, and he eventually met Zane again at 18. Pavel hasn't slept with anyone else since he met Zane again at 18. Has stalked Zane since 18 for 6 years and been emotionally tortured by watching Zane's ongoing fuckbuddy relationships with Kaz and Lyra. Once Pavel decides to make a move at 24, neither of them are with anyone. Zane tries to make Pavel jealous a few times though.
2.75 stars
Pavel and Zane are 24. Zane is studying to be a doctor. Pavel runs a nightclub/sex club but also attends college still somehow for art, which is kind of weird. They are both adopted into different families, both families are well off. They met as children, but Zane lost his memories due to near death experience he had. There is no hope for his memories to come back. Pavel imprinted on Zane and considers him his soulmate. For various reasons Pavel doesn't make a move on Zane when they meet again as 18-year-olds. But he stalks the bejesus out of him and makes a move 6 years later. Forcing Zane to be with him, because Zane has finally broken up with his f*** buddy he was with for almost 6 years. Pavel pursues Zane hard, and Zane doesn't like it at first but then he's attracted to Pavel once he starts looking at him that way and enjoying what Pavel does to him. But Zane has self-esteem issues and wants to be loved, wants to be someone's first choice and he doesn't believe that Pavel could be that for him. And Lyra, an ex f*** buddy that basically raped Zane and coerced him into a sexual relationship against his will, interferes.
I gave this book a long time to grow into itself, for it to go somewhere / end up somewhere positive, but the best I really got was some okay moments. I didn't like the dynamic between Pavel and Zane, and I really did not get a sense of them being in love. So for me it was a bit of a fail on the romance side. It's a dark romance so I usually give a lot of leeway, but it never got where it needed to be love-wise for me.
Things I didn't like:
- I don't like how Pavel keeps asking Zane if he's done things before, sexually. It doesn't change anything that Pavel does, it doesn't have any special meaning or serve any purpose for Pavel to know these things. It's like he's just asking to torment himself or make Zane feel like he should be sorry for what he did. It's just unnecessary and ugly that he's so caught up in it. He says he's not that possessive as the reason why he didn't make a move on Zane for 6 years, he wanted to give him space/free will but he clearly is mad about what and who Zane did in those years. And this passive aggressive harassment of Zane over his life choices is just ugly. Pavel didn't make a move, so leave the Zane the f*** alone for what he did! None of his business.
- I feel like the author has told us that Pavel is in love with Zane but not shown us. I think Pavel comes off as obsessed rather than in love. I know they have a relationship that is full of kink, but I needed to see more emotion and tenderness. I felt like Pavel just told Zane "I'm going to cherish you", but I never felt like they were each other's home.
- I just about lost my shit over this moment at the 92% mark. They are talking about their feelings, and all Zane can say to Pavel is that he likes him a lot. Not that he loves him. Definitely doesn't feel love at that point. Really, neither of them have believable love feelings for the other, Pavel is just obsessed.
- I feel like the author got better for a while there in recent books with fewer typos. But the typos were back here.
Some notable moments: when I'm reading, I highlight plot details I want to remember in blue, stuff I don't like in pink, and moments I enjoyed in yellow. I only had one yellow highlight in this entire book, not a good sign.
I like how Pavel was willing to say anything to get Zane to wear his ring. "“aren’t wedding bands supposed to go on at the wedding?” “These can be couple rings,” he quickly suggested. “Meaning we can wear them any time. Including now.” “No,” he chuckled and dropped the ring back into the box before snapping the lid closed. His laughter got louder when Pavel scowled, and he took the box and set it aside on the counter. “Let’s do it right, yeah? I don’t know about you, but ideally, I’d like to only get married the once.”"
*FYI about steam: I rate steam based on a combination of quality & quantity. I note kink separate from steam because I don't want to underrate steamy reads that don't have much kink.
**Note about spoilers: I like to comment on the plot of a book in reviews, so I almost always mark my reviews as containing spoilers. But I try to avoid spoiling the big dramatic moments! As a reader, I personally like to know what I'm getting into before I read a book so I know more about the content and if it's to my taste/mood, so I try to give that information in my reviews for myself when I'm considering rereading and also for other readers.

3⭐️ “I’ll never abandon you. You’ll never not be the most important thing in my life. I can promise you that right now. You’re everything to me, Zane. You always have been. Can’t you see that?”
I'm honestly a bit disappointed with this book. It started off strong, but halfway through I started getting annoyed because I just couldn't understand why my man, Pavel Hart, had to chase after Zane ALL THE TIME. I get that he has trust issues, but they weren’t even caused by Pavel, so I didn’t understand why he had to keep proving himself, why Zane doubted him so much when Pavel was doing everything he could to be with him and Zane just kept pushing him away.
“I just find it ironic that someone who wants to be wanted so badly always ends up drawing the attention of those he’d rather avoid. Perhaps you should be more specific with your wishes.”
THANK YOU BERGA! YOU (Zane, not my Mad Scientist) have been asking and wishing for someone to love you and choose you above everything else since the beginning of the book and when that someone shows up, this is how you act? You doubt him and push him away when it was so obvious this man was head over heels for you. I could understand Zane’s doubts at the beginning, but halfway through I was already tired of his attitude. I was fed up with it always being Pavel fighting for the relationship, especially when he hadn't even done anything wrong. On the contrary, it was YOU who left him and forgot about him.
“Don’t be afraid, Zane.” “You keep saying that.” “You keep needing to hear it. I won’t hurt you, bashert."
It kind of ruined the book for me. And the whole drama with Kelevra’s sister just made my rating drop even more because Pavel was right from the beginning. Zane should have told Kelevra what was going on with Lyra, his excuses for not doing so felt pathetic, and he had this mindset that seemed more like a way to justify his bad decisions. I didn’t hate his character, but I was definitely bothered by most of the choices he made throughout the book.
“All this time, apparently, I’ve had the same fears as you. It never feels good, being left behind. It never feels good being abandoned without even a second glance. At least look me in the eye this time, yeah, gorgeous?”
A round of applause for my man Pavel Hart, for his devotion to his man, how he cared for him, protected him, how obsessed he was with him AND for carrying this entire book on his back. Honestly, he deserved better. He didn’t deserve to spend 400 pages chasing after Zane.
“Are you really that scared that I’ll change my mind? Haven’t I already told you I’d never abandon you? There’s nothing more I can say here, Zane. Words clearly aren’t enough to convince you, so, let me show you.”
I like it when both mmc are equally obsessed with each other. And here, it felt one-sided for 90% of the book. Zane’s bursts of possessiveness towards Pavel and missing him when he’s not around only to push him away the moment he’s actually there WAS NOT ENOUGH FOR ME.
Another amazing dark MM romance in the Devils of Vitality series! This book is full of morally grey characters, scorching hot kinks and non-con - check your triggers before you go in and strap yourself in for a wild ride!
Zane Solace is training to be the next Royal Doctor, the physician for the royal family on the planet Vitality. He’s been in a three-way situationship with his friend Kaz and the royal princess, Lyra, but after breaking away from the pair of them he’s determined to focus on his studies…
Pavel Hart is thrilled that the man he has been lusting after for years is finally single. Zane is his and he is Zane’s… but he needs to make Zane understand that. He’s decided he’ll go to any length to make the good doctor his own, up to and including hunting him down and kidnapping him.
Will Lyra let her plaything Zane go? Will Zane finally let his guard down enough to let Pavel in? Will Pavel end up murdering everyone who even looks at Zane? Read to find out…
Read Devil May Breathe for: ✨ Two morally grey MCs ✨ Non-con & dub-con ✨ Breath play ✨ Edging and *sexy* torture ✨ Breeding kink ✨ Primal play ✨ Pool sex… with a little light drowning 😏 ✨ Political manipulation ✨ Soulmates ✨ Touch him and die ✨ Forced proximity
Thanks to the author for sending me an early copy of this book to proofread!
Awesome book in the Devils of Vitality series. This one was unique to the other books because when we start off, Pavel is already deeply in love with Zane- not obsessed at first sight like most of the Devils, or even in love but determined to ignore it like Flix, but in love and fighting for Zane. So IMO, this was one of the most romantic Devil books. Don't get me wrong, there's still plenty of the consent/non-consent, kidnapping, murder etc that we've come to expect in this series, but it's romantic as well. It can actually cause a bit of whiplash because you sometimes forget about Pavel's psychopathy with how deeply he cares for Zane from the very beginning... but we're always reminded quickly, LOL.
I also always enjoy the dynamic between two Devils. These two give as much as they get without one MC ever feeling weak, which is a big problem I had with Rabbit and Baikal. My one complaint is that I'm not a fan of voyeuristic sex as a way to claim ownership. It bothered me when Flix did it and it bothered me here as well. I like it better when the MC doesn't want the world to see their lover in a compromised position, but that's just a personal preference. Other than that, if you love strong MCs, punishment/ pleasure kinks, and psychos in love, I highly recommend.

Another great one by Chani Lynn Feener! I have no idea how she manages to write winners over and over again! I loved seeing glimpses of the other characters in the series, especially Ledger and Nikita. I can't wait to read a full story of the two of them. Some of the scenes sometimes felt a pinch too much for me, but I guessed that might happen, so it didn't take anything away from the reading experience and they were very much enjoyable, so 5 stars for sure! Pavel and Zane felt so real and I admit shouting at Zane couple of times "will you just stop resisting!" so he could get his happy end with Pavel. Also, I LOVE seeing people get their comeuppances. So to summarize I would recommend this to people who like dark MM and I will still read everything Chani Lynn Feener publishes. Thank you for another fantastic escape from reality❤️
I received an advance review copy for free and leave this honest review voluntarily.
Finally, Zane and Pavel's book. This book was very good and Pavel and Zane have become one of my favorite couples. I really liked the dynamics of both characters, how we meet Zane and how Pavel was crazy about him, how despite having hard moments, they also have tender moments. I also really liked the mention of other couples in the series.
In short, I loved this series and I'm looking forward to the next ones.

Devil May Breath is the seventh book in the Devils of Vitality series. This book covers Zane and Pavel. Zane is the “Prince of Medicine” going to school at Vail to eventually become the Royal Doctor. Pavel is the sex club owner and also a part of Kelevra’s retinue. Pavel has been waiting patiently for the day Zane stopped seeing Kazimir. Now that they are no longer sleeping together and it seems the Imperial Heir has also tired of him, Pavel sees his chance to claim what’s his. This is a very dark- like midnight black- romance. There is stalking, kidnapping, non con, dub con, primal play, breath play, marking, biting, violence and more. It’s a toxic relationship that you will fall in love with 😂 This is not a story for the feint of heart so please read the TW. I had a good time reading this book. In fact, I took my time and didn’t binge read it. Partly, because it’s basically 600 pages and also because I wanted to savor it. It’s a dark, wild experience and will have you questioning things! As always, 5⭐️s!
🔥 Spice Level: Feral, desperate, and emotionally charged 🖤 Tropes: Obsessive Love, Stalker MMC, Second Choice Syndrome, Forced Proximity, Past Promises, Dub-con ⚠️ Trigger Warnings: Dubious consent, stalking, emotional manipulation, flashbacks to past trauma, possessiveness, obsession, explicit sexual content. Please read the Author’s Note for the full content warning list. 💬 Favorite Quote: "No matter what he chooses, one truth remains. Pavel isn't willing to let go, and it isn't that easy to escape the devil."
🖤 Review: Pavel Hart = Certified Menace with a Crush If you love your dark romances with obsessive MMCs who can’t take no for an answer (and somehow make you root for them anyway), Devil May Breathe is your next guilty pleasure. This book is dark, creepy, weirdly romantic, and had me sweating through every possessive line Pavel threw out like a challenge.
Let’s talk Zane Solace first: He's a brilliant, overworked senior at Vail University—juggling school, protecting his chaotic brother from jail, and serving the Imperial family as part of the Retinue. All he wants is to become the Royal Physician and finally be the one who isn't overlooked or forgotten. He’s laser-focused on his goals and is determined never to let himself be used or sidelined again.
And then there's Pavel. Unhinged. Loyal. Stalker Level 9000.
Pavel has been watching Zane for years—quietly waiting for his moment. The moment Zane ends things with his lovers? Pavel moves in like a starving wolf who just caught a scent. He doesn't ease in gently. He pounces. He’s intense, obsessive, and so desperately needy to be seen by Zane, it’s actually heartbreaking beneath all the red flags.
But here’s the kicker: Zane doesn’t remember the connection they shared in the past—a bond Pavel still clings to like a lifeline. Whether they were close, lovers, or simply shared promises long ago is a mystery Zane doesn’t prioritize. But to Pavel? It’s everything.
Their chemistry is unreal—hot, messy, emotionally tangled. Zane tries to hold firm, to not fall into familiar patterns, but Pavel’s persistence is magnetic. The way he demands space in Zane’s life while begging for love in his own twisted way?? I had to put the book down and breathe multiple times.
And when Zane’s world starts falling apart—his brother spiraling, the Imperial Heir causing chaos—it’s Pavel who offers something no one else does: utter, obsessive, terrifying devotion.
🥀 Final Thoughts: This isn’t a sweet romance—it’s a fever dream. It’s about a man who refuses to be invisible and a man terrified of being discarded. If you’re into:
Dark college mafia-adjacent vibes
Obsession disguised as affection
Heat that burns through pages This is your book.
Pavel Hart is the definition of “I will ruin you to love you.” And Zane? He might just let him.

PAVELZANE PAVELZANE PAVELZANE PAVELZANE.
CHANIIIIII YOU DID IT AGAIN!
I have no words for these characters, I just need them injected into my veins. They are so ughhhhhh beautiful 🥹. I saw myself in Zane so much like wanting love and then as soon as you get it running away from it like he’s so realll. PAVEL PAVEL PAVEL I love you , you psychopathic shapeshifting mastermind 😭
#needmeapavelhart
The KelevraRin & BergaMadden pop ups ateeeeeeee 😩
My favourite couples 🩷 1. BergaMadden 2. PavelZane 3. KelevraRin
Here are some of my favourite quotes 🫶🏽
“You’re wishing you hadn’t dropped your dagger right now, aren’t you?”
“I would stab it through your navel and drag it all the way up to your heart,” —————
“We’re going to have so much fun together.”
“Pass.”
————-
“Normal people don’t beat down the person they claim to love,” he continued.
“I’m showing him I want him.” His brother snorted derisively.
“You’re showing him he needs to get a restraining order.”
—————
“For the fucking record,” Zane said. “I am the crazy possessive type.”
—————
“You keep saying that. What does that mean?”
“It means you’re my person,”
—————
“When we were little, I chose you… when we met again, I chose you again “
—————-
“ Let’s just take it slow.”
“I want you to be mine forever.”
He paused. “That isn’t very slow.”
——————
“Why did I give myself your last name?”
“Because it was never my last name,” he replied. “It was ours.”
Zane finally gets his HEA and it’s as dark as it gets. Most of this book is dub con and very frequently just non con. Pavel is obsessed with Zane for reasons.
This book was darker than the others but still in that same universe. I never knew how sad and discarded Zane felt. It was very emotional. Lyre really was the bad guy in this book. Very very bad.
The end was great and I hope there’s one or 2 more books in this universe because I love these characters. They are very flawed and when their insecurities are exploited, it makes for a very interesting plot!
Very hot scenes very hot. Primal play, blood and lots of fluid spillage. Restraints and a bit of organs exposed.
Another amazing installment of the Devils of Vitality! This series gives me everything my little heart desires. Drama, angst, mental stimulation, and some serious spice. It is definitely a dark book with some trigger warnings, but it is totally worth it! I need me a man like Pavel. Completely obsessed. Zane made me angry with how wishy-washy he was at times, but I got over it for sure. The smexy time playing was super hot as well. Loved it! I received this book as an advance reader copy, and I am reviewing it voluntarily.
“I’ve loved every version of you I’ve ever met,” Pavel and Zane are everything. ❤️ This book is spicy dark and I love it. They do start out rough together, but once they get to know each other a little better, they're actually quite sweet to one another. They're so dadgum hot together. 🔥 I love Pavel's traits, powers, I'm not sure what the right words are, but he's so cool! It would be totally overwhelming to be loved by him. His all-consuming love and lust for Zane is impressive. I love how clever and regal Zane is. They're both so stabby. I freaking love them so much! I wish that the merman movie they were watching was a book I could read because it sounded like a fascinating story. 😆 I love the cameos of the other devils in this book. It's fun to see them all come together for their own. I hope people read this series in the publishing order (with the exception of His Dark Paradox) so that they can also fully appreciate how awesome that is.
I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily. I will also be purchasing it as soon as it goes live to support this badass author. This book is so well written. Chani Lynn Feener is the best!
Chani officially has a piece of my heart. I devour everything she puts out and LOVE it so much, this book was no exception. The chemistry and push/pull between Pavel & Zane was so amazing and so hot 🥵. If you loved the rest of the Devil's of Vitality series then this will be a top read for you as well. Zane is such a touch starved, needy and possessive MC and I love him so much 😍 and Pavel 🔥☠️ he is so oddly sweet and yet so toxic and I was so here for every moment 🫣.
I personally thought this was a mix of being one of the darker of the series and yet also the more sweet and tender all at the same time and that juxtaposition gripped me HARD the whole story. The kinks were spot on 💥, my absolute favorites 😈, the dirty talking was hardcore and the spice was so epically well done 👏🫠.
