More show than tell and the ending was HORRIBLE.

A villainess isekai of sorts although without the (visual) novel/otome game elements and a slow burn story that involves a bit more intrigue and slice-of-life than romance at least for the genre. Not a bad story with good characters, but taking a bit too long. To make matters worse, it ends at a cliff hanger. So, a decent read, but not the best.

Karen may have memories of her previous life as a Japanese working woman, but it doesn't mean much to her current life. Now the former daughter of a rather notable house, her blood ties still get her tangled in a very dense web of politics with her sister's marriage.

This isn't really a "light" novel by any means. It's a massive tome detailing a lot of complicated relationships, but Karen has enough of an outsider's view of things to keep things mostly comprehensible. She's ostracized from noble society, yet still entangled in it, and her somewhat modern-day sensibilities make it hard for her to deal with the circular noble talk. I can absolutely see why this was recommended by the author of Ascendance of a Bookworm--the two are very different in terms of worlds, but very similar in terms of feel.

I did get a huge kick out of Karen being forced to choose a husband, and which one she chose, and why. It's really nice to see how it all works out for her, despite everyone involved having at least one major surprise. I'm also kind of rolling my eyes at how the story is still playing a romance with the one she didn't choose, as I'd rather she get a chance to live out her dream for a few years before throwing some new romance into the mix (and before her husband is even out of the picture to boot).

Overall, I'm not sure I'm completely sold on the overarching plot yet, but I'll probably give it another volume or two. This one had some good moments despite a rough start, but the end is a seriously bad cliffhanger, so that is something to be aware of before starting. Recommended.

This light novel is not light and cheery. Don't expect it to always be happy. That said, it feels genuine and I enjoy the character interactions. Curious about where it's going.
