The New Birth

Rate this book
Do we really need a new birth? Why? Who says so? How can we become "a new creation"?

Peter Mead takes us to Genesis where our problems began. Our hearts are wilfully sinful—so much so that we can be described as "dead". Only a new birth like the one Jesus described to Nicodemus can provide the cure.

Peter Mead shows us something of the excitement and joy of becoming "a new creation". Because of God's gracious and generous heart, we can have true and abundant life: in Christ. Nothing could be more necessary or more wonderful than the gift God is offering you—don't settle for less!

In The New Birth, Peter Mead writes about this essential aspect of regeneration through the Spirit.

New Hearts

The book begins by introducing us to Nicodemus, whom we revisit throughout. He first serves as an example to show that our problem—humanity’s universal problem—is that we are dead. Mead takes us back to Genesis, where Adam and Eve die not only physically but also spiritually. This results in guilt and shame, hard and lifeless hearts, and the absence of the Holy Spirit.

Mead then leads us to Isaiah and Romans, explaining that God’s plan all along was to give us new hearts. And at the heart of Christianity is the cross of Christ—that God would give His Son to save us because He loves us. Through the new birth, we become a new creation, with God as our heavenly Father.

New Life

I was most moved to read that the new birth gives us new life in Christ today. We are free to live by God and for God.

With short testimonies and discussion questions at the end of every chapter, this is the perfect book to introduce Christianity to those who are new to the faith. And for seasoned saints, it will serve as an injection of joy, reminding you of your redemption and new life in Christ.

I received a media copy of The New Birth and this is my honest review.

Refreshing and helpful gospel-centred book. It would be great to share with non-Christians. For those who have been Christians a while, it is sometimes helpful to pick up a simple book like this, to remind you of just how remarkable the truths of our salvation and new life in Christ are. This book makes you pause and marvel; exactly what I needed in a current busy and distracted season.
