The word chakra means "wheel of light" in the language of Sanskrit. The chakras are the body's internal energy centers, and are aligned vertically near the spine. Energy enters the body through the head (the heavens) and the base (the earth beneath). The 7 chakras are vortex points where these forces mingle, with each producing a distinctive energy pattern. The purpose of the 7 chakras is to absorb, transform, and distribute the body's internal energy, known by terms like prana, life force, or chi. Specific organs and body parts are associated with each chakra, as well as corresponding behavioral, emotional, and personality patterns. It's important to note that the chakras are in constant interplay, and can really only be separated intellectually.
Similar to the principles of Feng Shui, energy can sometimes flow too strongly or too weakly, or be blocked entirely. If this happens in one or more chakras, there will be a corresponding distortion or disharmony which affects patterns of health. Sometimes, chakras get "stuck" open or closed, and it's important to uncover the root of this state for energetic balance.

The Chakras is a guide book for people like me who want to know what is a chakra, which are the seven chakras and how you can open them? The books is brief, but it has enough information for a beginner: the color of each chakra, its characteristics, the organs it involves, fears and malfunctions, the gemstones and mantras that can heal the blockages and so on. There are some formatting issues - the pages load very slow and sometimes they refuse to turn at all. But besides these, i recommend the book because it might be helpful for you to understand the bounds between mind, body and spirit.
Really a quick read and basic description of the 7 chakras.* Gives a good list of recommended reading at the end of the book to go more in depth of this subject than what she did. Overall, a pretty decent book for a beginner in chakra studies.
*Sidenote: yes, in my goodreads account, it does state I started it in January and now finished it months later. I began reading it in January and put it at the back of my reading list to finish other books from the library, which I have a tendency to do with the books I own. Just an explanation as to why I said it was a quick read when it would appear as though it took me a long time to read it. :o)
