I loved this book because it truly captures the fun & humor of the film. It doesn't skip the big parts and "soften" them for younger children; it is the movie. It does not contain the afterscenes witch is disappointing but actually creates another loose end for a sequel to the movie with is very cool. The paperback version includes a full-color poster of the main characters. It is very good but shorter than I hoped so they should release a longer version but over all is very good through the entire thing even if you haven't seen the movie.

It made me chuckle at points I definitely shouldn't have but it's really just a poor retelling of the movie. So exactly what I should have expected?

Horrible. The writing doesn’t capture the plot at all, neither the characters, and neither the Minecraft world and items at all. It poorly falls flat on its face in its attempt of success.

After experiencing the cinematic masterpiece in theaters, surrounded by like-minded brain-rotted individuals, I knew I needed more. The life-changing experience of being around people of all ages, from middle schoolers to parents, created the memory more than the movie itself. Witnessing the uproar of cheers after Jack Black announced "Chicken Jockey!" had already sold me on joining a fandom full of cringy teenagers and yaoi shippers.

Then, came the book. I had only learned about this after scrolling Instagram reels, and I knew I had to read it. I came into work ten minutes early, sat down at my office cubicle, popped in my AirPods, and began my experience. The audiobook was like the theater, being immersed in a colorful, creative world alongside the likable protagonists: Steve, Garrett, Henry, Natalie, and Dawn. The narrator of the audiobook, David Lewman, did an excellent job at the narration.

The novel, for it being a junior novelization, was well-written in the third person point of view. The story followed along similarly to the movie, with a few added lines. I will never be able to forget "Thick Thighs Save Lives" from Garrett. I'm sad they didn't include the iconic "hola" from Garrett, but sometimes sacrifices have to be made.

There were points I had to pause the audiobook and try not to burst out laughing from the ridiculous dialogue, especially the "Let's Minecraft!" line. However, for whatever reason, the book was pretty good. My expectations were low due to obvious reasons (which was alike before I saw the movie) but the audiobook held up the book like Atlas holding up Earth.

This is more of a criticism of the movie more than the novel (I'm sure the novel came out after the movie) but there was a lack of feminine aspect and development for the women in the storyline. Dawn and Natalie held a lot of potential, but the narrative strictly followed Garrett, Steve, and Henry, which was incredibly disappointing. I was excited about the women fighting, I thought they were going to lead with them saving the men, but unfortunately, it fell through.

Iconic, cringe, and based, is all I can say about this novel. I'm glad it was just as fruity as the movie was. Unfortunately, you can't rewrite history and make Steve and Garrett kiss. AO3, I expect this ship to hit 1k books by the end of the summer, or there will be a great wrath upon ye.

This junior novelization is a perfect companion for young Minecraft fans who loved the 2025 movie. It directly translates the film's blocky adventure—featuring characters played by Jason Momoa and Jack Black—into an accessible 144-page chapter book.

The Good: It's a faithful, fast-paced adaptation ideal for readers aged 7-10. The language is clear, the chapters are short, and the inclusion of color photos from the movie is a great bonus for fans. It successfully captures the movie's core themes of building, surviving, and teamwork.

The Limits: As a straight novelization, it offers no new story and focuses entirely on retelling the film's plot. The prose is functional, meant for easy reading rather than literary depth.

Verdict: It excels at its main goal: providing a fun, readable way for young fans to relive the movie. It's a high-interest gateway book for reluctant readers or any child captivated by the Minecraft universe. For its intended audience, it's a hit.
