Hunting. Being Hunted. Death. Life. Things we have at one point but that could disappear at any given moment. Sons tells a short, bitter, tale of two hunters with much to lose. Which one will fight harder to survive in this world?
*Second revision*
"This is a rare tale where characters are more mysterious because they aren't over developed. DeSantis focuses on the plot, not character, and it drives the story, a bare bones but brilliantly simple one, with panache."
"I did really enjoy "Sons." Reading the description, I thought that it might be some sort of Hunger Games ripoff, which of course I was completely wrong about. "
"And, in the tradition of James’s works, it is bloody. But in ten pages, it is riveting!"
Just a regular nerd, reading comics and enjoying life the best I can. I've made my own comics, as well as short stories and books. These days I still occasionally try to create some of those.
My main focus here is writing reviews to spread love throughout the comic and manga worlds. I also make YouTube videos with deep dives on comic characters, so come check me out there as well.
Add me if you want to talk anytime! I love nerding out. Now go enjoy reading some good comics!
Something I love, no...adore even, in horror - originality. Thinking outside of the box. Horror, like many genres, runs the risk of being rehashed. You know the saying: There are no new stories, only better, rewritten ones. On occasion though, something comes along that's just a little different.
Sons is the tale of two hunters, one human and one wolf. That's right, a wolf. How cool is that? As it turns out, very. Now, for spoiler haters, this isn't a spoiler, but more a recommendation to read Sons. What I've just revealed doesn't ruin this story in any shape or form. I don't ever remember reading a story from the POV of an animal before. It lends Sons a very original and unique focus and drives the book along.
The story is short, yes, but the characters are developed in such a way that less is more and by the end of Sons - which only took me seventeen minutes to read - this primitive and beautiful tale is one to remember. This is a rare tale where characters are more mysterious because they aren't over developed. DeSantis focuses on the plot, not character, and it drives the story, a bare bones but brilliantly simple one, with panache.
5* - I was going to give the book four for length, but originality knocked it back up. My reaction when I realised what was happening was different and when a book can do this, I'm sold. This is the third DeSantis book I've read now and I will buy more. Great stuff!
I don't often read many short stories, so I don't have much to compare this to. However, I did really enjoy "Sons." Reading the description, I thought that it might be some sort of Hunger Games ripoff, which of course I was completely wrong about.
The story was wonderfully original and nothing like I've ever read before. Going into the minds of both wolf and human was a very creative outlook and created a nice dynamic in the plot.
There were definitely some grammatical errors throughout the story, so I would suggest someone to look over it more thoroughly next time.
The pacing was quick, but not too quick like some short stories will do. I liked the character development, having just enough in such few pages.
Overall, this was a very interesting story about two hunters, and I would suggest giving it a shot.
I just read this again and am just as impressed as I was the first time. There were grammatical errors in the original that have been corrected and the author was very kind in letting me read it again. It is very original and that is something I enjoy when reading short stories. Short stories are not easy to do because there is limited time in which to develop the story and characters. The author succeeded very well. The story drew me in from the beginning and has an interesting angle from the perspective of a wolf and a human and exploring the subject of fathers and sons. It is very imaginative and original and I am looking forward to reading more from this author.
Honestly, and I never thought I would say this, but this story is a little to short for me. I did like the way it went but there really isn't a ton of character development although James does do a good job writing from 2 different perspectives. So if you are looking for that then this isn't for you. This is short and to the point. Despite the shortness I would still purchase this as long as it was reasonably priced.
