A photographic exploration of the liminal space occupied by female masculinity, BUTCH honours the beauty, power and diversity of women who transgress the gender binary, with subjects reflecting the many sizes, shapes, ethnicities, and styles of Butch. The transversal dialectic of female masculinity is celebrated here — unapologetic and undiluted.
This is the catalogue for photo-based artist SD Holman's exhibition.

I love the range here of...styles of butch, I guess, or definitions of butch: these people do not all fit tidily into a box. But...words. I want more words, dammit. This is one of my most common complaints with photography books: I want background and backstory and context; in this case, when it's portraits, I'd have loved to have heard more from the subjects. There are a few Q&A-style soundbites, but they just mostly just made me wish for more info. That said: per the description on GR, this is the catalogue for an exhibition, so I'm not sure what it's fair to expect. Maybe someday there will be a related project...one that is wordier...
I don’t know how I feel about butch being extended from female masculinity tbh but I’m not butch so my opinions are 🤷🏽♀️. Beautiful photography though.
