We Are All Shadows

Rate this book
When Phoebe Ingram sees the apparition of her dead cousin dangling from a rope in her aunt’s Victorian home, she’s certain it’s just her imagination. No way she suddenly developed some freaky ability to connect with the dead. But then it happens again, and this time it isn’t just a vision. It’s like she’s reliving the excruciating murder through Evie herself.

The cops are calling it a suicide, but Phoebe’s aunt is convinced the culprit is Jamie Pennington, Evie’s devil-may-care (and boyishly handsome) ex-boyfriend.

There’s something about Jamie that makes Phoebe want to trust him–even when the whole town is against him. But she’d have to be crazy to fall for her cousin’s possibly-murderous ex.

Going by the threatening, seriously creepy notes she’s been getting, someone is watching her. Someone who’ll do anything to stop her from digging up the truth. Someone who knows her secrets–secrets that could rip her meticulously buried trauma right up to the surface.

To track down the killer and find peace for Evie, Phoebe has no choice but to step out of the shadows and kick the (only semi-figurative) skeletons out of her closet–before the next body to turn up is hers.

I didn’t expect this book to pull me in as fast as it did. From the moment Phoebe sees her dead cousin hanging in her aunt’s Victorian house, I was hooked. At first you think, okay, grief, imagination, clairvoyance? But then it turns into something way darker when she starts reliving the murder itself. That’s when I knew I wasn’t putting this down any time soon.

This is a total page turner. The mystery, the creepy notes, the feeling that someone is always watching Phoebe — it all builds and makes you say “just one more chapter.” I also really liked how complicated everything felt, especially Phoebe being drawn to Jamie when the whole town thinks he’s a creep. Nothing feels easy or clean, which I also appreciated.

What really stood out to me is Holly’s voice. It’s sarcastic, funny, and dark at the same time, but never in a try-hard way. It feels like you’re inside Phoebe’s head. If you like mysteries with an edgy, small-town secrets angle, and a main character you actually care about, you should read this book. I flew through it and I’m already looking forward to reading her next one.

This book cover said ‘trust me,’ and I’m glad I did.

Set in the 90s (instant sell for me), packed with spooky vibes (also a yes, obviously) , a murder mystery, and a town full of quirky, unforgettable characters. Every single one of them felt unique, each had their own struggles and charm. Jamie completely stole my heart. Holly is truly skilled at writing unique characters. Holly has a real gift for writing characters that feel fresh and alive. Not your typical copy and paste personalities.

The pacing was spot-on. It was fast, engaging, and never dull. I couldn’t predict the ending at all, which I loved. The humor landed perfectly, and Phoebe was such a relatable main character (especially in chapter 11—that one hit home).

I also adored the emphasis on friendship. It felt genuine. Which I find important, especially in a YA story (okay all stories).

Overall, I had such a good time reading this one. Already recommended it to my friends 💕
