First thing I want to say is that I love how descriptive Mary’s writing is. Every book I’ve read by her so far she has really set the scene. You feel like you’re there visually and emotionally.
This is a book about a birdman and a very sick mortal female who can be healed by ‘getting it on’ with the birdman. It’s interesting in the way that he is part bird and lives on an island that is magical. It has plenty of spice and its unique because of the above. It’s also really sweet though. I love that this was all about Elora’s empowerment. Everything is her choice. She was held back by her illness and Osias provided her the freedom to live again. She also shows him that he’s not just an object for curing people. He is deserving of love as well.
I will also say that while it is strange to think about a man being part bird it’s not super different from other magical beings like a vampire or something. He looks different and he has different ways of viewing life but ultimately it wasn’t that strange (to me anyways) while reading it.
It’s exactly what I thought it would be and I loved it. If this sounds up your alley then def check it out. It’s a nice quick read. I would say it’s like a cozy fantasy with some interesting spice added in the mix.
3.5 stars I really enjoyed the candid discussion of the less “socially appropriate” aspects of chronic illness. As someone with hypothyroidism, and a myriad of GI issues, it’s nice for that part to be acknowledged. Osias was very sweet, but often came across as one dimensional. I would have loved more emotion from him than compassion and shock when someone gives a shit about his needs. Elora was interesting and I enjoyed watching her regain her independence.
Spice: 4/5
Triggers: life threatening illness, multiple instances of GI distress, gaslighting doctor, classism
This is a weird little book about a strange island and magic bird people who can heal people (namely women who aren't given proper care) by magic healing sex.
I say weird in the nicest way. It's a weird monster book. If birdmen are your thing, this is a quick read for you. If birdmen are not your thing, I don't believe you'll enjoy it.
From a writing standpoint Mary is consistent in her writing style and character consistency/growth. The story does feel a little shallow, the style of writing gives you the world but not nesscarily in a way that pulls you in and makes you feel it, at least for me. It's definitely a book with a purpose: describe a specific illness and how women are often ignored or told to be less dramatic about their symptoms. She definitely does that well.
Overall, not my personal cup of tea but I can appreciate the talent and time that went into this book. It will definitely be some people's cup of tea.
“No matter where you are on this island, or what happens, if you summon me, I will answer.”
Mary E. Jung always knows how to combine fantasy and reality to create incredible books. Saved By the Caladrius portrays a woman, Elora, who struggles with chronic thyroid disease and is in need of a healer to save her life. If you’re a fan of monster romances and soulmates, this is definitely the book to read.
As a fan of the Libra Witch series, I was super excited to read more of Mary’s work! I have never read a monster romance before this one, and it will definitely not be the last one I read! I fell in love with the world, the story, and the way the characters interacted with one another. Elora and Osias completely trust each other from the very beginning, making their relationship extremely strong and beautiful to read about!
I loved the tropes and the strength of the characters, especially Elora, as she fights for her life. I am excited for the second book and highly suggest reading if you love romantasy!
- Chronic Illness/Pain - Magic Monster juice - Winged/bird man - Just one bed - Fates mates
I received an ARC and this is an honest review, albeit a little late but my reading is extra slow right now.
Elora has been plagued with an incurable thyroid illness and an incompetent healer for a while, she is in constant pain and is rotting from the inside out. That all changes after she falls into a coma and is swept away to a secret island full of monster who have the power to cure the incurable.
As someone who has struggled with a thyroid issue for most of my adult life I really understood Elora, granted hers was much worse than mine, but I understand her in an unique way. I would probably jump at the chance to be cured of it an given the chance to never be sick again, sign me up.
Osias was a doll. So sweet. Watching the two of them on their journey was perfection, the first half of the book builds things up wonderfully to the second half, where things shift from caregiver to mate.
This is the first book I have gotten to read by this author, though she has been on my tbr for a while. I was lucky to receive the advanced copy and be able to start it then. I look forward to more.
I flocking loved this. It is a tremendous story of hurt healing and love. It shows the worst of what a disease can do but the best of what kindness can. There's primal instincts play and adorable character growth. A unique world built around a mysterious island and several monsters I'd love to love.
This book is beautifully written. Mary E. Jung has done an astounding job of scene and world building with the incredibly detailed descriptions and explanations.. The story itself is one of soul-mating and finding freedom of oneself after a debilitating illness.. with so much attention to detail in the writing you really feel like you are in the book and experiencing what the characters are.
This was fhe first book I've read by this author and will gladly go on to read more.
I absolutely enjoyed reading this book! It’s far sweeter than I expected for a monster romance with a fancy peen 🍆 but this makes it a great sweet and cozy read for the cozy weather.
Done get me wrong though, it IS still spicy but it’s just equally sweet!
I also have a lot of respect for the author for managing to weave in the terrible reality of having a chronic and debilitating illness in a monster romance.
It is so difficult to be chronically ill, sometimes it honestly feels unbearable, especially when your body feels like it’s betraying you.
I think one of the biggest highlight for me is how much patience and care the hero has for the sickly heroine. Statistically, men often leave women when they sick, especially when they get cancer.
So it’s both heartbreaking and heartwarming to see a male character tenderly care for the woman he loves, mo matter what.
The characters here are really lovable and the world building is simple to follow, while remaining immersive.
I’d definitely love to read the second book!!!

2.5 stars because the book was pretty bland. I really don't like writing reviews for books less than 3 stars, especially if it's an ARC review. I wasn't entertained at all, but thankfully it was a short read. The author had a really good idea, and maybe a person who's terminally ill could relate to this book more than I could and have a different opinion, but I just found the "healing process" kinda weird. I was just skipping past all of the descriptions and honestly, it was just really boring.
𝑀𝑦 𝑇ℎ𝑜𝑢𝑔ℎ𝑡𝑠💭🧐 Thank you so much to @author.mary.e.jung & @rrbooktours for my Advanced Reader Copy of 𝐒𝐚𝐯𝐞𝐝 𝐛𝐲 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐂𝐚𝐥𝐚𝐝𝐫𝐢𝐮𝐬! This review is comprised entirely of my own thoughts & opinions, & is based on the copy I received.
This was my first Mary E. Jung read and I devoured it! I love this book so much - it was such a quick and spicy read, and while the spice was spicing in all the best ways, it was also one of the sweetest and most uplifting romances I’ve read in a long time, with such a focus on healing and liberation. Elora and Osias are both so amazing in their own ways. They’re both so strong and I loved how respectful Osias always was with Elora, especially after she’s not had choices in her life for so long because of her illness.
Elora has an incurable thyroid disease and is brought to a magical island one day when she becomes unresponsive. She is on this island with ethereal beings with a proclivity for healing through a magical mating ritual🌶️😉 Elora is very skeptical at first, and then she and Osias find each other and there’s this immediate connection between them.
This book was just perfect - I loved that we got a lot of spice but the romance element was still sweet and there was complete and total trust between Elora and Osias. I really loved Mary’s writing and am probably going to be reading her entire backlog now! The world building was lush and descriptive and painted the most beautiful picture in my mind. It was such a great read that flowed beautifully!
Overall, I definitely recommend this one! It’s a perfect book if you’re looking to read a spicy monster romance, full of love and healing! I cannot wait to read more books in this world!
Saved by the Caladrius: A Timeless Tale of Love and Healing
In the realm of fantasy romance, few novels have captivated my heart quite like Mary E. Jung's "Saved by the Caladrius". This mesmerizing tale of love, healing, and the extraordinary is a true masterpiece, weaving a spell of enchantment that will linger long after the final page is turned.
Jung's prose is nothing short of enchanting, transporting readers to a mystical island where the boundaries between reality and myth blur. Here, we meet Elora, a courageous heroine facing a chronic illness, and Osias, a majestic Caladrius, a being of ancient lore with the power to heal through a unique sacred ritual.
The author's exploration of love, loss, and healing is both poignant and profound, crafting a narrative that resonates deeply with the heart. Elora and Osias's relationship is a tender, passionate, and deeply intimate dance, navigating the complexities of their unique circumstances with sensitivity and grace.
Jung's balance of romantic tension and emotional vulnerability is a triumph, creating a romance that is at once sultry and soul-stirring. As Elora and Osias embark on their transformative journey, their connection ignites a beacon of hope, illuminating the transformative power of love.

Damn this book hit hard because I related way too much to our main character, Elora. She suffers from a chronic thyroid illness that impacts her daily life. In her world, and ours, there’s no cure for this illness. Her doctors don’t help, and so, Elora gets worse and worse to the point that she gets sent to a hidden island where mythical creatures have the power to heal any illness.
Here comes Osias, the caladrius, who gets attached to Elora and heals her. But through her healing journey comes attachment to Osias as more than her caregiver.
It is a short book in length but it felt quite long, as it is slow pace. There isn’t a lot of plot, it is very much a relationship and character development-centered book. It is very immersive, the surroundings felt very real, and what Elora was going through is very detailed as well. It felt odd reading about a character with the same issue that I have, kind of good but also frustrating cause in our world, there aren’t mythical creatures that can heal any illness.
As for the relationship, it was very sweet. They both cared so much for each other. Showing that one another matters and has worth beyond certain aspects. The spice was spicing. Fancy peen indeed.
We do have an overall introduction to the other species of the island, so I can only assume the next book with have a new species as the love interest.

I received an advanced copy of this book and this review is my honest opinion.
Afflicted by serious disease, Elora ends up on an island where mythical beings are able to heal human illness through magical means. The Caladrius heal through magical seminal fluids, so that means she must be intimate with her chosen healer. Although she is at first skeptical, she becomes less wary once she meets her healer, a Caladrius named Osias. There is so much about this story that tugged at my heart and sent me through such an emotional journey alongside Elora. Our FMC is at a point where her thyroid disease has robbed her of any quality of living. When it seems as if the end is near, she is taken to a magical place where human/beast hybrids are working alongside humans in a symbiotic relationship to heal the sick. Elora is obviously full of doubt and questions, but the more she learns, the more she begins to accept that she may be able to be healed and live the rest of her life free from her chronic illness with no strings attached. Osias, the Caladrius who chooses to heal Elora, feels a strong pull towards her. During their time together, they both realize that there is more to their relationship than patient and healer. Their journey of discovering their feelings for one another while Osias is also tasked with healing her is delicate and emotional. I’ve never read a book quite like this and it was so enjoyable. It made me laugh and cry, and I fell in love with both MCs. It’s both heart-wrenching and heartwarming at times and something I know I will go back to again. It’s a beautiful love story in a magical setting with a HEA for both characters.
This was the first monster romance that I’ve ever read. I wasn’t sure what to expect, but I ended up enjoying it. I loved the writing style. I am not a fan of the recent trend where everything seems to be written in first person, so reading a close third person narrative was very refreshing. The descriptions of the world and the mythology were interesting and well done. The whole healing process was a very original idea, and it worked well. The characters of Elora and Osias were immediately likeable and relatable. I loved the way that Osias ensured Elora’s enthusiastic consent in everything that was happening. There seem to be so many romances around these days where the FMC’s consent is dubious, or occasionally non-existent, so it was wonderful to see such a respectful relationship portrayed. I also loved Elora’s relationship with her parents and the friends she made on the magic island. It was great to see a heroine who had goals beyond just snagging a partner. The only thing that didn’t really work for me was that the story seemed to move unnecessarily slow in some places. Perhaps it is a convention of the genre, but I found it frustrating when Elora spent a whole chapter thinking “Will I? Won’t I?” about whether she would do it with Osias. As a reader, I knew that she would and I really wanted her to, that’s what I was there for, so her hesitation seemed needlessly forced, especially as the later story had a couple of twists and turns which provided more organic tension. All in all, this was a fun read.
Gleeful Goblin Review: As someone with chronic pain and illness I had no idea what I was in for right from the author's note. I was misty eyed and fired up to read once I got through that section even more than I already was with the baseline blurb! The whole note is amazing but this excerpt is a beautiful summation.
"Every one of my books has a woman in it that is powerful and in charge. She might not be loud, she might not be stabby, but she has a voice and it’s heard. This book might be filled with spice and fun times, but there is an undeniable message here. The female main character represents women with chronic pain who need someone to listen. Who are desperate for a cure. Women who have fought so hard and just need a hero. These chronically ill women are warriors and deserve a happy ending. Without further ado, I give you the series where chronically ill women (sometimes men) are healed with magic monster cüm."
This book is certainly a love letter and support to anyone who has struggled to get proper care and feels like they fight a daily war inside their own body. There is a huge emphasis on consent and bodily autonomy that made my heart sing while reading this book. The devotion and care that both characters develop for each other in their journey towards their HEA is as heartwarming as it is a blast of steamy spice. 5/5 Stars.
I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.
Thank you so much to Mary E Jung for the opportunity to read and review this book!
Saved by the Caladrius is an MF monster romance and book one in the Monsters of Medela series. In a world where healing is prized, Elora has been struggling with chronic illness that can’t be cured. When she receives an opportunity to receive healing from the race of magical healers known as the Caladrius, it’s an offer she can’t refuse
This was such a fun read. Elora was a wonderful character and I really enjoyed her growth & healing in this story. As someone who has a thyroid disorder, I really related to Elora and her struggles in this story. Osias was such a sweet and caring character and a perfect match for Elora. I really loved him so much! I did feel like this book was a little instalove for my personal taste, but that’s absolutely a “me” issue and not a book issue.
Overall this was a solid four star read and a fun start to a new series! I really enjoyed the world building and look forward to more of this series! This book did have some triggers, so please check if you’re sensitive. This book was a little bit of a slow burn, but there was plenty of spice once it got going, so overall three flames for spice
If you’re a fan of monster romance with cozy vibes, hurt comfort, low angst and fated mates, then absolutely pick this one up!
This was my first book by Mary E Jung, and I absolutely loved it. I was drawn to it immediately from the Ancient Greek vibes and the fact that it wasn’t Greek gods or your typical mythological creatures was a bonus. It’s set in its own rich world, an offshoot series from some of her other books I believe.
Osias is a caladrius, a species that had once been a kind of magical healing bird, turned into a half man so that they could better heal mortals. Osias is kind and thoughtful, a caretaker and consent king with some really special equipment. He’s healed quite a few mortals over the years, but never before had he felt so called to a mortal.
Elora is so tired of battling every minute of every day to survive. An incurable thyroid disease wrecks her body, and the healer is a useless old man who refuses to listen to her pain. After slipping into a coma and waking up on a mysterious island, hope sparks at the prospect of being healed, even if it means mating with a monster.
This story was so raw and powerful and healing and validating and HOT. I’ll admit, I might have been a little skeptical of the bird feet (me and birds have mutually agreed that we don’t like each other). But I want an Osias of my very own. This story was everything I hoped it would be and so much more.
🪶💦 Saved by the Caladrius : 2.5/5 Stars Subtitle: “Birdman Boinks the Plague Away”
You ever read something that makes you question not just your standards, but your species? Yeah. That was me, finishing Saved by the Caladrius and thinking, “You know… maybe bird sex magic isn’t that weird.”
Plot-wise, this book is hanging on by a feather. Our girl is dying, Victorian-consumption style. Enter stage left: the Caladrius. A mythical half-man, half-bird, full-time walking cure for terminal illness via… his magical man milk. Yes, you read that correctly. His enchanted “healing nectar” is the only thing that can save her.
Science? Logic? A single ounce of coherent worldbuilding? No. But birdboy is hot and the girl is horny, so who needs narrative consistency?
And yet… the smut? Weirdly compelling. It’s not elegant. It’s not emotionally profound. But it commits. There’s something undeniably bold about a book that looks you in the eye and says, “Yes, his sperm is the panacea for all disease. And yes, she’s going to ride that cure like her life depends on it. Because it does.”
Final Thoughts: • Plot: 2/5 — More holes than Swiss cheese in a woodpecker’s nest • Smut: 3/5 — Feathery, filthy, and freaky • Overall: 2.5/5 — I am confused, concerned, and strangely intrigued. Would I recommend it? Only to the brave, the horny, and those who’ve truly run out of reading options.
The best part about this book was the open and honest communication. I will admit reading this after reading 2 other books with WAY less communication between the MCs was jarring, but in a good way! The plot was sweet and easy. Just about everything went as smoothly as it possibly could. It got spicy towards the end and the very last part was my favorite!
The only thing I thought was fast or could have used more development was the talk between Elora and her parents and the decision they made. Spoilers: All in all, it wasn't that serious and very minor. Every character in the book had the same open, trusting, honest communication from the get go, which felt repetitive. Towards the very end there was a nice change in pace.
I am super excited for the second book! A rivals to lovers romance!! Thank you Mary E. Jung for the ARC!! This is a voluntary review all thoughts and opinions are my own! ♥
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ 🌶️🌶️🌶️🌶️ Saved by the Caladrius By Mary E Jung
This was my very first read from Mary, even though I have had a few of her other titles in my sights for a while now. This was incredible. An absolutely wonderful love story about healing and acceptance.
Elora has had a rough life this far, and her body is betraying her at every turn with her thyroid issues. She is funny, witty and so clever.
Osias is strong, determined and kind hearted. He has a cheeky side that he started to show Elora. He feels an immediate pull to Elora and knows she is going to be more to him than just a charge to heal.
Their relationship is beautiful. Elora was genuinely taken aback when Osias explained that the other women he healed never took his feelings or comfort into consideration. They developed a wonderful relationship based on mutual caring, comfort and friendship.
I loved how the thyroid issues were presented as I don’t think they are given enough spotlight. My husband has thyroid issues so this hit different for me to see them represented.
The little teaser at the end for the next book in the series was amazing I am curious to see what happens when a tornado ( Miriam) meets a volcano ( Leander )
Saved by the Caladrius surprised me in a great way. I loved it! After reading about it and its tropes, I assumed that this book would be more of an erotic novel. Although it’s very spicy (🌶️🌶️🌶️🌶️), the romance between Elora and Osias was so sweet and heartwarming. And the story itself hold such deep meaning.
Elora has been suffering from a chronic thyroid disorder and Osias has the magic ability to heal her. As she is sent to him in hopes to cure her of her disorder, they begin to grow an emotional and intimate connection. I loved seeing them form that connection and fall in love. Like I said, sweet and heartwarming. And the spice 😮💨🔥 Remember, this is a monster romance, so you’re getting a monster 🍆
I 100% highly recommend this book, especially if you love monster romance. It’s a quick and easy read too, so it’s the perfect book to read between your last and next read or if you’re in a reading slump.
Thank you so much to the author and R&R Book Tours for the arc! I’m excited to read your other books, Mary!
I am just starting to dabble in monster romance and this read was a great place to start! Mary E Jung did an amazing job of world building and the descriptions are superb. The plot of this book is very unique. I love that the author wrote about health problems that many suffer with and she wrote a strong FMC, Elora, who I feel represents the unheard. Sometimes we all need a little help from a strong monster man 😝🪽🪽
Elora is suffering from a Thyroid illness and no healer has been able to rid her of this affliction. She ends up collapsing and wakes up on the Island of Cantamen. The good news is she can be fully cured from her chronic ailment…. But the only way to do it is to mate with a Caladrius (part bird, part man). Elora’s life completely changes the second she accepts Osias as her healer Caladrius. I really enjoyed this whirlwind monster romance and I would recommend this beautiful monster romance to anyone who loves..
--aRc TIME-- Saved by Caladrius is a story about a woman who has lived most of her life in extreme pain due to a thyroid condition. When she falls into a coma from it all, she awakens to find herself in a new place with magic where she can be healed...for good. The catch? She must mate with a species called a Caladrius, half man/half bird, that will give her the healing she needs.
For being a shorter story, I was surprised with the depth of the story. The plot is enmeshed seamlessly with the world and character development. The spice was SPICY and worth the build up to it. It had a balance between deity vibes and monster vibes which worked.
Funny side note, I have a huge aversion to birds and the fact that the MMC was half bird didn't bother me (too much) overall. There were a few descriptions referring to his bird qualities that gave me the heebie jeebies, but that's me with my issues 😂.
If you like monster romance, the man saves the woman, soul bond magic, magic in general, and a curvy lovable FMC, this book is for you! I recommend it. Also...corkscrew anatomy. If that piques your curiosity....😏😏😏
I had the absolute pleasure to beta read Saved by the Caladrius. Thank you so much to the author for the opportunity!
I am a huge lover of monster romance and I haven't read very many birdmen type monsters. I was immediately interested in Osias and couldn't wait to find out more about him! Even more so when I saw the cover SWOON!
From the first page I felt connected to Elora's struggle. The FMC has a chronic illness that is severely impeding her health and quality of life. You can't help but root for a miracle or in this case a caladrius to save the day! Wouldn't it be nice if we could have fun times with a hot monster and cure ourselves. I loved the world building and lore behind the island and it's magical inhabitants, including the caladrius. I can't wait to read find out more in future books.
Osias and Elora are so sweet together and I loved seeing their relationship build. This also has one of my favorite tropes, fated mates! And you can't forgot the fancy peen, I gasped! This one was a first for me and I loved it! Such a fun read!
I don't usually read monster romance but this sounded so amazing to me that I had too and I'm so glad I did because I loved it!
The descriptions are incredible, I love it when an author can describe a scene so perfectly that you don't have to stop to try and see it, you just see it so clearly and it's beautiful!
Elora is strong and I admire how she never gave up and kept fighting for her life! Osias may be a "monster" but he is beautiful. He is kind and caring, and the way he takes care of Elora is so sweet. Not only did Elora finally get the care and attention she needed but so did Osias, he felt kindness and love for the first time.
And that healer, oh boy, I wanted to smack him so hard for how he completely disregarded Elora.
I can't wait for more in this series! I highly recommend this cozy monster romance with a lot of spice! And a fancy peen 😉
This book an exciting mix of mythological adventure, romance, and personal growth. The book masterfully balances sizzling chemistry, high-stakes emotions, and a captivating world that pulls you right into the narrative.
Mary E. Jung's writing is always an amazing blend of fantasy with reality. As someone who’s new to the monster romance genre, I found myself completely drawn into this book, even though birds aren’t really my thing. The emotional depth of the story had me laughing and tearing up at different points. I genuinely enjoyed following Elora and Osias' journey and would highly recommend this book to anyone who loves mythological, steamy, and heartfelt romances.
What a magical creature and oh how handsome he sounds! Gosh. This guy really knew what he wanted and what he was doing. He can cure and he can do so much more. He was kind and just felt for him at times because from what I read, thats all he was seen as, a magical person who can cure someone with magic. Not until Elora showed up.
This book was well written and i found it captivating on the writing. Smooth as can be.
Regardless of how much spice it has, it’s not just about that. It’s about Elora and Osias fond relationship that only grows from the moment they meet. Found it to be the right amount of spice and the plot was great.
What drew me to this story was the theme of chronic illness and while reading about Elora and her Caladrius, I have never felt so seen. As a chronic illness girly myself, the idea that there’s a half man half bird with ancient magical healing powers out there ready and waiting to heal was wonderful to read about. The care and understanding that Osias and everyone on Medela had for Elora from the very beginning was beautiful! This was such a relaxed and soothing read, and I can’t wait for more stories from this world.
A 5 star read all the way! I adored this with my whole heart! If you know me then you know that I love a monster romance and make it one with chronic illness rep? I was sold! This book gave me everything I wanted. Sure, it's a little ridiculous. (I mean he heals her with monster ❤️fluids❤️.) But, that's what makes it such a great time. As someone who is chronically ill and has days where I wish desperately to just be able to live a normal life this book gave me a place to escape to. And yesssssss, the spice is major reason to recommend this one as well!
