It is the year 2038, and the Earth is slowly being consumed by a space-borne monstrosity dubbed the Black Tide, which is using nanotechnology to remake the planet into something hideously alien.

Erin Olsen works for Project Harmonics, humanity's last-ditch effort to find a new world before the Tide can wipe them out. But when that world is found, and it turns out to be occupied, Erin will need to find the courage to face the unknown in order to save the inhabitants of both worlds.

Earth is being slowly consumed by a nano-tech based alien life-form that is terraforming the world. As nothing can stop the advance, the scientists are working on trans-dimensional theories of opening portals to parallel worlds and have so far found a compatible world that is inhabited by sentinel ponies. Using technology borrowed from invader autopsies they successfully transform a human to an enhanced probe for the pony world and send her in.
No spoilers so I will just say that the story was very entertaining and was a worthwhile read.

I have actually recommended this story to non-Bronies before as an example of a science-fiction "first contact" tale. I think someone who's not a fan of the show could still enjoy reading this with only minimal confusion over a few missed references here and there. It helps that the viewpoint protagonist is learning about Equestria as she goes, so in some ways it might even benefit a reader to not be familiar with all of the details of the show.

A nice feature of this story that distinguishes it even from other human-in-Equestria fanfictions is that the protagonist, Erin, is deliberately sent to Equestria as an explorer with preparation and forethought. And Earth's relationship with Equestria is "fair" - Humans have mastered technology beyond the ken of Equestrians, but Equestrians have access to magic that's just as much outside of human experience and each can learn a lot from the other to mutual benefit.

If I had to come up with some criticism it would be that a very interesting and complex antagonist character winds up getting a simple, uninteresting conclusion to his subplot. But that's just one character, not really the focus of the story, so I can easily let that slide (plus, it's looking like the character will continue being significant in the sequel, which is currently being written). This story is replete with characters who oppose each other and do questionable things for their own good reasons, with no moustache-twirling villains or evil intent anywhere.
