Nothing ruins a perfectly good friendship quite like romance.
Amica should know. It’s happened to her more times than she can count.
From the destruction of her middle school reputation to her latest eviction, Amica knows that love and dating are nothing but tragedies lying in wait. When she senses another ill-fated romance creeping her way and threatening the stability of her friend group, Amica does what any sensible person
Snag the nearest hottie to pretend to be her boyfriend.
Austin is a great fake boyfriend, and he might even be the best friend she’s had in a while. There’s no danger of love’s usual messiness rearing its ugly head between them.
But Soren, Austin’s unnervingly blunt and unfairly alluring roommate, is a different matter entirely.
Roommates and Fake Dates is a WLW romance that will appeal to fans of Alison Cochrun's Kiss Her Once for Me and Alexandria Bellefleur's The Fiancée Farce.
since I can’t review without finishing the book I’m going to be real with you and say I dnf
1. Page 51: Amica’s internal thoughts about Seron “and she’s actually kind of pretty if you look past her sloppiness” BRO WTF. This specific sentence is why I stopped reading. The author really typed that out, felt like it was appropriate, AND PUBLISHED WITH THAT IN THERE???? That’s mean as shit and made me irrationally angry in defense of a fictional person lol
2. The friend group in general from both sides are pushy and annoying and I wanted to individually punch them all at least one time when they were mentioned
3. Honestly the story was hard to follow from the start and little chaotic in a bad way.
If you enjoy people making their own lives more complicated than necessary to avoid emotions, this is the book for you (I certainly do). Great autism representation with one of the main characters and excellent rep for middle school trauma you never really get over despite it bleeding into your relationships and poisoning all your friendships.
I also found myself enjoying Austin the cinnamon roll poly best friend slash fake boyfriend a lot more than I intended, as well as Joey, the trans male character who appears to be interested dating the main character and sets off the dramatic events that follow. A solid romance and a fun read.
