📚 Book Review 📚 Weekends are Murder A Salem Falls B&B Paranormal Cozy Mystery By Nellie H. Steele ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ This is book three in the Middle Age is Murder Cozy Mysteries Series written by Nellie H. Steele, providing an entertaining, thrilling, and enjoyable story that cozy mystery readers will eagerly devour. Ellie Byrne, owner of the B&B, is excited about guests staying at her bed and breakfast and attending the town’s annual Halloween Ball, particularly her new friends, Cassie and Lily, and their one-eyed dog, Willy. With the help of her best friend, Mia, they begin preparing for the ball, which includes a shopping spree to buy a new dress for Ellie. While shopping, Mia suddenly disappears and no trace of her can be found. With the help of her friends and pets, including one-eyed Willy, they locate the kidnapped Mia, finding her blindfolded and restrained, but safe and not knowing who or why she was abducted. Matters get worse as a man is found dead at the ball, killed by a candlestick in a hallway outside the ballroom. This killing leads to the speculation that The Clue Killer has returned after being silent for twenty years to conclude his murderous game one last time. Ellie and Mia begin their own investigation, and utilizing past and present clues, set off to solve this deadly murder mystery. I enjoyed this installment of the cozy mystery series, especially with the addition of Lily, Cassie, and one-eyed Willy. The inter-character relationships were well-developed and compelling. The plot was cleverly written and well executed, with suspense, tension, emotions, and actions all intertwined to keep the reader glued to their chair. I was also delighted with the witty comments from the character’s pets, bringing both amusing remarks and keen observations to the story. This was a fun, well-written, and satisfying read that I highly recommend to everyone. I voluntarily reviewed an Advance Readers Copy
This 3rd book in the series brings in Cassie & Lily from another series, though they didn’t really do much other than support Ellie & Mia. A fall masquerade ball is the main event in this book, sadly someone was murdered and the party was over. Mia is entirely reckless in this book, but her baby talking to Cleo makes for some very funny snark coming from the cat. Nate calling Ellie “ pumpkin” is annoying. Once again the characters cannot pickup their feet and walk, no they shuffle. 17 times in this book; 16 in book two; only twice in the first book, but they waddled 6 times. How sad to be so distracted by this that highlighting and counting was an outlet. I should have gone with the drinking game I mentioned in my review of book 2.
This book was one I'd been waiting for and now I can't wait till the next one comes out. In the meantime, since Lily and Cassie from one of the author’s other series were guests at Ellie's B&B, I decided to start reading their series. I have a feeling they had no idea their cat was gonna be a huge help in finding clues for this adventure though.
Ellie's new relationship seems to be a super sweet one so I hope that continues. The showdown in this book with the killer was a good one with reinforcements arriving just in time. With a collective effort, the perp was hauled away, a long time coming as you'll see when you read this.
Was laughing hard again over Cleo the cat and the main characters new reactions to starting in the dating pool. Sometimes your mind just says things you never expect or want to say but they do here to many laughs. Only a little disappointed how easily I picked the killer out early based on the 2nd book. Little too predictable but still good because all the characters are fantastic and I had no emotional connection to the killer from reading about them. So I actually like the ending but a few more surprises like the first book would have added more.
I’ve really enjoyed the first three books of this series. Good characters, interesting plots. A solid premise.
But. The author seems to hit on a they like at the beginning of each book and then use it every chance they get. This book’s chosen phrase was, “…wrinkled his/her nose.” This phrase appears in this book so much it became really distracting and took away from all the good things. Sometimes the author used it twice on a single page!
I just finished reading the first three books of the Middle Ages is Murder series and I cannot wait for number four. I have read several of Nellie H. Steele's other series and this new one does not disappoint. Plus, I am a sucker for a well written mystery that has talking cats and dogs. I hope you enjoy the read. KathyB
Of course, Ellie and Mia (and Lily and Cassie from another series) solve a murder based on the game Clue. Meanwhile, it's fun listening to the older characters discuss the slang of different generations with Jake.
Cute story, crossover characters, and a murder to solve! Some blooming romance, a puzzle board mystery, and lots of fun. As always, an entertaining read!
