Into Thin Air

Rate this book
Chief Investigator of Nordland Police, Jakob Weber is drawn into a complex case when a teenaged girl goes missing in Northern Norway, and a second woman disappears from a remote island in similar circumstances … FIRST in a compelling, dark new Nordic Noir series.

_______

When nineteen-year-old Iselin Hanssen disappears during a run in a popular hiking area in Bodø, Northern Norway, suspicion quickly falls on her boyfriend. For investigator Jakob Weber, the case seems clear-cut, almost unexceptional, even though there is some suggestion that Iselin lived parts of her life beneath the radar of both family and friends.

But events take a dramatic turn when another woman disappears in similar circumstances – this time on the island of Røst, hundreds of miles off the coast, in the wild ocean.

Rumours that a killer is on the loose begin to spread, terrifying the local population and leading to wild conspiracies. But then Jakob discovers that this isn't the first time that young women have vanished without a trace in the region, and it becomes clear that someone is hiding something … and another murderous spree may have just begun…

This book was slower than a limping snail!
Also, the focus was more on the private lives and woes of the police than on the mystery.

Lang leve The StoryGraph!

As a voracious reader of Scandinavian crime fiction, nothing makes my heart sing more than the discovery of an exciting new voice within this genre. So I am delighted to report that with Ørjan Karlsson’s Into Thin Air, I have indeed discovered another little gem within translated Nordic noir, right from the exceptionally creepy prologue…

I think the resounding strength of this book is the way in which Karlsson has composed his team of detectives, and the diversity of characters within it. At the helm of the team is seasoned investigator Jakob Weber, who is a steady hand and held in great respect. Still dealing with the aftermath of the untimely death of his wife, he is a model of professionalism and fairness, giving his team and the reader a sense that we are in safe hands. I enjoyed that Karlsson brought a beautiful balance of the personal and the professional in his characterisation of Weber’s team, so that that details of the team’s personal lives were incorporated throughout. This is always a tricky balance to achieve in crime fiction as too little decreases our empathy and connection with the characters, and too much overshadows the procedural aspect of the narrative. I liked the way that we could appreciate Josefine ‘Fine’ Krog’s difficulties balancing parenting and work, the slightly renegade character of Armann Femris, and perhaps most effectively the struggles of incoming investigator Noora Yun Sande who has recently transferred to this team from Kripos. Her backstory is particularly compelling and sinister, and you get an early indication that there will be more difficulties for her along the way. As with any good crime book there is the woefully unsympathetic and dictatorial senior officer- Konrad ‘ The Crow’ Rakstad, the necessary thorn in the side for Weber and his team, adding an additional difficulty to an already complicated and thorny investigation.

Obviously the krux of the narrative and plot is the pernicious continuation of the subjugation of, and violence against women, which is handled with a clear-sightedness and sensitivity by Karlsson throughout. Alongside the sensitivity the author employs a no-hold-barred depiction of the atrocities that are committed by the perpetrator, and within the personal life of Sande who has tried valiantly to extricate herself from an abusive relationship. There is a wonderfully contemporary feel to the plot with the incorporation of a plot strand involving a social influencer, and the familiar trope of how the more influential members of society are free to circumvent the rules that apply to others. All these finely honed aspects of the book fed into my overall enjoyment of it, and Ian Giles’ assured and fluent translation added much to the reading experience.

As I said before, I read widely within this genre and it is a real delight to discover a new and exciting voice, within this increasingly expansive genre. I very much look forward to Weber and his team’s next investigation, and believe that Ørjan Karlsson will swiftly become one of my favourite Nordic noir authors. Highly recommended.

There’s a new sinister storyteller on the block. Ørjan Karlsson is one to watch for anyone who enjoys their thrillers as dark as the starless sky.

I always think there’s something so exciting about starting the first book in a new series as you aren’t only anticipating the book in your hands but all future books in this series, where the characters are like old friends you return to time and again. When the book is a Nordic Noir published by Orenda then your anticipation is even higher. But, as I expected, Into Thin Air did not disappoint.

Chief Investigator of Norland Police, Jakob Weber, is drawn into what appears to be a clear-cut case when teenager Iselin Hanssen disappears during a run. Suspicion quickly falls on her boyfriend and it looks like this case will be tied up quickly. But things take a dramatic turn after another woman disappears in similar circumstances and rumours begin to spread about a serial killer being on the loose. Then, as Jakob investigates the increasingly complex case, he discovers that this isn’t the first time young women have vanished in the area. Could his cases be connected to these cold cases? And is he hunting for a serial killer who has been hiding in their midst for decades?

Chilling, addictive and suspenseful, this wild and crazy rollercoaster ride was a brilliant start to a new series. Exploring dark deeds, depravity and the murkiest depths of humanity, it had me hooked from its sinister prologue to its unforgettable finale. Skillfully written and cleverly choreographed, Karlsson kept me on my toes with an array of red herrings, twists and turns, and there are so many threads in this story that you could weave a jumper. A strong sense of place transported me to the icy and rugged Norwegian landscape, and provided a treacherous backdrop where danger lurks waiting to pounce.

The story is told from multiple points of view as Karlsson introduces us to the varied cast of fascinating characters. While it never felt confusing, it did take me a while to get to grips with who each person was as Karlsson established the people we will meet time and again in this series. Our main protagonist, Jakob Weber, is a great central character, while his new partner, Noora Yun Sande, is a mysterious addition with a dark backstory that provides a lot of uncertainty and tension. Karlsson also includes the mysterious killer’s perspective; the odious, cruel and twisted character allowing the author to explore the depravity that can lurk inside humanity.

A taut, tense and propulsive thriller, this was a fantastic start to a new series and I can’t wait for book two!

Selve plottet blir kanskje litt for gjennomsiktig. Men, bevares …

The first book in what promises to be a solid Nordic noir series. I loved the setting which is just above the Arctic circle in a small coastal town in northern Norway. The story opens from the perspective of an unknown serial killer on the prowl. Very quickly the town’s lead detective has his hands full working cases for a dead woman and a missing woman. Strong supporting characters and plenty of well crafted twists make this a really good crime thriller.

WOW!!! Bodø og Lofoten, skog, fjell, familiehemmeligheter og kulde – jepp, this book got it all.

Iselin Hanssen, is a young woman living in Bodø in northern Norway. She is hoping to get into Police College in Oslo. For that reason, she trains really hard and never misses a run. One day, she goes for a run and doesn’t return.

On a nearby island of Røst, another young woman goes missing, also while going for a run.

The two cases become quite high profile, and Jakob Weber – a CID police officer – and his team, begin their investigation. Jakob is also working on a cold case, a murder of an unidentified woman 29 years earlier.

Are these cases connected?

What a book! I love a good police procedural and this one was phenomenal.

I loved the location, characters and the plot. I was quite interested in finding out what happened to Noora Sunde back in Oslo, and her motivations behind her move to Bodø.

There are quite a few twists along the way, too! Prepare for the unexpected. I feel there has to be another book in the series, as I don’t think the case was fully concluded.

I can’t wait for another instalment.

Thank you Orenda Books for making this author’s novel available in English. I really enjoyed the setting in Bodo, Northern Norway, inside the Arctic Circle. So much so, that I’ve just booked a holiday in Norway with a trip up to Bodo.

The novel is the first in a new series featuring Chief Investigator Jakob Weber and colleagues at Nordland Police, including new recruit Noora Yun Sande fresh from a Kripos team in Oslo.

The story is about Jakob and his team’s investigation into the abduction and killing of a number of women, including a famous celebrity blogger, at various locations in Bodo, Rost and the Lofoten Islands.

I felt that all of the characters were well fleshed out and I had no issues with the pace, nor the multiple points of view, including that of the abductor. The depiction of the small community on Rost was really great, as well as the environs of the Kaiservarden trail just to the north-east of Bodo where the initial Bodo disappearance is set.

I’m very much looking forward to more from this author in this series.

First of all, huge apologies for posting my review late ( instead of my original date if 31st January ). Completely my fault ( and me scheduling the wrong date ).

Next, let's talk about the cover. The grey, misty, frosty imagery perfectly sets up the feel and the mood for the story, and he red text is a great contrast.

Now, the story. We follow Jakob, Chief Inspector of the Nordland Police in the wild, untamed North of Norway.

Jacob is on the case of a missing teenager, who disappeared on a run in a hiking area. Before long, suspicion falls on her boyfriend. But another woman disappears shortly after under very similar circumstances. So rumours spread of a killer and conspiracy theories are abound.

Want to know more? Be sure to pick your copy up.

So all in all, a great start to the series.

It's dark, it's chilling, it's well written with well rounded characters that are believable and feel real.

I will say, the pace, for me, was a little slow, but i don't think that hampered the story at all.

An all round, an interesting Nordic crime thriller.

4 🌟 🌟 🌟 🌟 's from me.

This was one of those "perfectly adequate" situations - I didn't find any to particularly like, nor did I find anything to actively dislike. As an audiobook that runs in the background while I do chores, it was just fine. I suspect I would have liked it less if I was actively reading it.

Nordic Noir is probably not the genre for me. While they all tend to have the trappings of a police procedural, they are not the same genre - and I am generally left unsatisfied by the (lack of) mystery solving. The investigation in this book was no exception. Too many convenient witnesses (yes, probably that's how most real crimes are solved, but I want more from fiction!), too many loose threads left untied, and way too much focus on the personal lives of the detectives that ultimately had little bearing to the case (& what bearing it did have seemed forced)

This was still an ok read (if you can stand the on-screen violence, which didn't feel gratuitous or intentionally gory) - but not a book I'm likely to remember or re-read in the future
