Biowatch

Rate this book
A ghost ship in western US/Canadian waters, its only cargo a single dead crew member.

Fearing the situation was a greater threat than it initially appeared, the Pentagon deployed their most powerful weapon—Troy Bishop with the Proactive Preemptive Operations Group (P2OG). Quickly shuttled to a Cold War-era bioweapons facility, Bishop observed the opening cut of the autopsy and the black, gelatinous blood that oozed from within. His chest tightened at the unmistakable sign of hemorrhagic fever.

Further investigation turns up another troubling fact—that body carried a weaponized recombinant virus containing two deadly strains. Someone is planning to kill millions of people, and they have exactly what they need to do it.

Bishop is deployed on a cross-border mission to root out the key players and stop a plan that would result in worldwide destruction. Sounds like another day at the office for him—except this time he’s working with an international team of strangers and he’s not quite sure everyone is working towards the same goal.

Death and destruction stand at the door and only Bishop can stop them.

Fans of Michael Crichton and Jonathan Maberry will devour this exciting bioterrorism thriller from the man who has been on the inside, retired Joint Terrorism Task Force and Secret Service agent Larry Enmon.

Larry Enmon writes really satisfying old-school thrillers and Biowatch is no exception. Troy Bishop is a solid leading man in the style of Clancy and Co. without being so over the top that the author needs to toss in a bunch of arcane deus ex machina coincidences or gizmos to make the story work.

Enmon has actual experience in the genre he writes about as a former cop and Secret Service agent, so he doesn’t necessarily need to invent wild “take over the world” villains or bizarre James Bond plotlines. Simple human reasons are enough for the antagonist to carry a grudge that could wipe out the West Coast. Since we now live in a world where billionaires have rocket factories and control entire media empires, seeing how a person of means working with a nation-state to harm America and create a massive, deadly event is just a little too chilling. And Enmon pulls it off well while ticking all the boxes one should in this genre – Is there a good-looking girl as Bishop’s counterpart in the operation? Check. Governments that are hamstrung by politics, leaving our hero to his own devices? Check. Overwhelming odds and dangerously smart bad guys? Check. A few red herrings and plot twists to keep the reader guessing? Check.

The straightforward writing style makes Biowatch easy to get into, and before you’re too far in, you’re hooked as the clock steadily ticks down to a deadly confrontation.

The book reads like a screenplay for a biological warfare thriller the pace of events is exceptionally fast. I have no doubt that a skilled director could turn it into a great action film. Anyone who enjoys conspiracy, secret agents, and even a hint of romance will find it all here.

This is the first book I’ve read by Larry Enmon, and it fully justified the high ratings it received. I’ll definitely be reading his other thrillers.
