A mesmerising novel
Nowadays, tattoos are in vogue, so reading a novel that deals with them is interesting. I mean, I think that they have something special and in “Worn Skin”, I could see that. Torgeir Blok has penned an enticing story where tattoos hide horror.
This story revolves around Nick who knows a lot about tattoos until one day, he comes across a mysterious, mean man, called “The Painter” who hurts people through tattoos. The situation changes when this man kidnaps a little girl and Nick strives to save her. To do that, he must be careful because the Painter is a very dangerous man.
This is definitely a page-turning novel with well-crafted characters and a plot that will keep you at the edge of your seat. I was glued to the pages from the very beginning and I liked the way it finishes. I highly recommend it.

Creepy dark!

Such a creepy, dark book! But at the same time, how intriguing and interesting it is - it totally sucks you in right from the start and makes you want to keep reading. The cover alone is what got my attention, and the story did not disappoint. There's a bit of confusion at first with the characters and how they meld together, especially when there were some errors (such as Cutter / Clemens) which unnecessarily confused me more. But the story kept me going. The writing was good, some interesting turns of phrases that I liked. It's definitely a dark book, gory at times, so be warned if that's not your thing.

It tells the story of Nick, an alcoholic with a dark past, who possesses an encyclopedic knowledge about tattoos. Things take a turn for the worse when he encounters The Painter-a figure using tattoos as vessels for supernatural energy-inflicting pain and horror. He finds himself drawn to his dark world, in which he struggles to resist the temptation of finding meaning in suffering. But when The Painter kidnaps a little girl, Nick will be pulled into confronting the dark realities of his own life and the darkness in the tattooing culture he knew. He goes on a terrifying tour of his mystical underworld-places of magic and mutilation-led by the need to save the little girl and to confront his own demons.

The protagonist, Nick, is highly flawed, but even struggles of alcoholism and suicidal thoughts only add poignancy to the portrait of despair that Blok develops masterfully. Blok masterfully develops Nick's character; he gradually walks the readers through his inner struggle and partial sense of loss that the protagonist experiences. Self-discovery and redemption form the backbone of Nick's journey when he is forced to confront the horrors that The Painter inflicts. From passive bystander to an active participant in the fight against evil incarnate, his growth symbolizes the complexity of human nature and the wish for change.

A villain who sends shivers down your spine, The Painter epitomizes the darkness in tattoo culture. How he manipulates pain through tattoos uncovers a sinister understanding of human suffering. Blok intricately builds up the character of The Painter-a balance of fascinating and terrifying. The contrast between his artistic genius and his malevolent intentions brings into view the duality of art, both healing and destructive.

Although the role of this kidnapped girl may seem insignificant in this journey, it embodies one of the strongest themes-innocence, and what is truly at stake on Nick's journey. She is one of the driving forces that motivates Nick to face his personal demons and protection-the extent one would go to in order to save the helpless.

Suffering and Redemption:
The main function of suffering in respect to the attainment of redemption throughout the story is manifold. Nick suffers pain, mirroring the tattoos' dual nature as torture and cure in and of themselves. Blok investigates the psychological consequences of suffering: does it really lead to growth, or to further despair?.

Identity and Transformation:
Tattoos are worn to help identify the individual, and it is with identity issues that the characters of "Worn Skin" struggle through the story. Nick has to research what his tattoos mean, which can be said to be somewhat deeper into finding out about himself and self-acceptance.

Duality of Art:
Blok would show how art is healing and harming at the same time. The tattoos the Painter has are testimony to the darker shades of creativity-to show how even art can be used as a weapon. This invites the readers to consider the meaning of body art beyond its aesthetic value.

Writing Style and Pacing Torgeir Blok's writing is evocative and immersive, sucking readers deep into this colorful world of tattoos and their meanings. Rich in details, the prose captures the minute aspects present within the process of tattooing and within the emotional landscapes of the characters. The pacing balances, with the tension steadily growing higher while Nick navigates the underworld.

Well-developed Characters:
The layer of depth added to the characters-primarily Nick and The Painter-carries much emotional weight in this story. The way Blok handles their motivations and frailties makes them all so human; hence, appealing.
It does deal with suffering, identity, and dual nature in art since it sends the readers into a deeper reflection over life and art in general.

It is an absorbing tale that deals with art, pain, and identity. The themes are really sublime and deep aspects which Torgeir Blok weaves in words that make this particular work stand out among the works in the genre. With well-developed characters and a compelling narrative, Blok opens readers to the deeply contemplative meaning of tattoos and the transformation inside due to suffering. Worn Skin is emotionally deep, thematically rich-easily a five-star read.

Tattoos have always intrigued me, and "Worn Skin" not only caught my attention with its striking cover but also took me on a mesmerizing journey through a world where each mark on the skin carries a deep and often unsettling narrative. The author truly shines in creating both the plot and the characters. Each character possesses a depth that makes their struggles and choices resonate with the reader. The storytelling is enthralling and captured my attention from the very first page.

In summary, this is a book that strays from my usual choices, but my fascination with tattoos made me appreciate a story that is rich in symbolism and emotion. I recommend this book and hope to read more soon from this fantastic author that I discovered.

I found this book as recommended from a previous mystery read and had no expectations about it, but what a great book I just read. This book mixes the theme of tattoos and how they are so important and symbolic to many people, with the misuse of them to hurt and punish. The book takes an unexpected turn with the kidnapping of a girl; for this reason, our protagonist enters a world full of mystery and magic to save the girl from the clutches of this villain. I highlight the author's narrative; it makes you feel immersed in the plot and always want to know more. A book that I really recommend, it is entertaining and different from what I have read of the genre.

Worn Skin by Torgeir Blok is a book that combines tattoos, thriller and horror elements as well as magic and fantasy into one unusual and gritty tale. The protagonist Nick thinks he knows all there is to know about tattoos, but when he meets the mysterious Painter, he realises that he has barely scratched the surface. The Painter’s tattoos channel supernatural energy, but unfortunately, it turns out that this strange tattooist may be darker than Nick had at first imagined.

The book is very dark with plenty of violence, but the overall writing style is very solid and immersive. The story was too gruesome for me, but fans of thrillers, magic and horror will probably enjoy this novel.

"Worn Skin" is an intense and gripping read that takes you deep into a world where tattoos hold dark secrets and hidden power. From the very first page, the book draws you in with its raw portrayal of Nick, a complex character who is both broken and determined.
It is a dark, captivating novel that goes beyond the surface of what we usually think about tattoos. It’s a story of pain, redemption, and the power that lies within art. If you’re looking for a book that is both thought-provoking and thrilling, this one is for you.

Strange

It was an interesting read but very strange. Hard to get into and so many weird things going on it was hard to stay interested but then it would get back to normalcy for a couple of pages then back to weird and hard to follow. Still confused when I got finished reading book. If you're interested in fantasy books you might be interested in the book. For me there was no horror or suspense because I was trying to figure out what the author was trying to convey and just never got there.

Thank you to Goodreads and the author for a free copy of this book. The description sounded really interesting, a paranormal mystery type of book. What we have instead is more like a fever dream. I found it very odd and it just was not my cup of tea.
