Bookshop owner and cancer survivor Rarity Cole loves her life in Sedona, Arizona—the community of healing she’s found; her adorable Yorkie, Killer; and the friends she’s made in the survivors’ book club. Now one of them needs her help because her husband’s been accused of murder . . .

When her week begins, Rarity expects the biggest mystery she’ll need to solve is how a rare first edition of Lewis Carroll’s Alice in Wonderland ended up in her bookstore bathroom. But after book club member Shirley tells her that her husband George, who has dementia, is the prime suspect in a nursing home murder, Rarity feels as if she’s stepped through the looking glass.

As someone who’s been given a second chance at life, Rarity wishes her friend Shirley a second chance at love. But Shirley has rebuffed her senior suitor Terrance out of loyalty to George, even though he no longer knows who she is. Except guess who’s the second suspect? Shirley’s caught between two men—and it’s up to Rarity and the survivor sleuths to determine if one of them is capable of cold-blooded murder . . .

Another great book by Cahoon. Enjoy the Sedona setting. Archer's life is complicated but he and Rarity work things out. Good connection to his family's past with the mystery in this release. Wish I could visit the bookstore!

A Survivors' Book Club Mystery Series is one that I have enjoyed from the beginning. I enjoy the bookstore setting and the great group of characters, especially Rarity Cole. Lynn Cahoon does a wonderful job of creating strong female characters that are likable and realistic. Dying to Read brings us into the memory care center where Shirley's husband lives and a murder happens there. There are plenty of suspects with a multilayered plot to unravel. Something is going on with Archer, Rarity's boyfriend, and she is worried about him. There are several things going on in this story, including a cold case, but all threads come together with some surprises along the way making this a great read. I received a copy for the purpose of an honest review. These are my thoughts.

Mystery done right! This series has been a favorite from the first book and this installment cements this series as a top favorite! Wonderfully crafted characters make you care and connect with them, but the mystery is why you pick up the book! Fantastic plot that is engaging, entertaining and wrought with twists, turns and red herrings. This author crafts wonderful mysteries where there is often more than one mystery at play thus more potential suspects in the pool. Is there one guilty party or two or more? Are the mysteries connected or just coincidence that they happen at the same time? I absolutely love Rarity as a main character. A strong, independent woman who has survived what life has thrown at her and thrived, not to mention she owns a bookstore so that automatically makes her likable! Rarity has surrounded herself with a found family of wonderful friends who also make up her sleuthing crew when they start poking into the mysteries that surround them. The author has also sparked a need to revisit Sedona, Flagstaff and surrounding areas as they play predominantly in the setting of the book. I'm always sad when I finish a book in this series as it means that visit has come to a close and now I must wait impatiently for the next visit with Rarity and friends! To the author I say, great book, but give me more, more, more! (Does that sound too needy/greedy??? Too bad, I really love this series! LOL!)

I have always been a fan of this series, but I really believe this is the best one yet! Rarity is such an interesting MC, I love how she continues to grow and put her own stamp on her life, how she wants it to grow, who she wants to include and how she improves her business and involvement in the community. This book focuses a lot on the past, involving many of our favorite people, including Archer and his family, Shirley and George, as well as Rarity's neighbor Terrance and even Rarity's own past. We have a cold murder case, one that Drew's father, Jonathan, was the lead officer on, we have a murder at the Senior Living Center where Shirley's husband George is living and Terrance is working on a security problem, and someone is leaving valuable old books at The Last Chapter for Rarity to find. Can the survivors book club start finding some answers to all these crazy mysteries popping up? Will everyone be able to deal with the answers and reconcile the past and present? This one will have you turning pages as fast as you can. Strongly recommend! Many thanks to #Netgally, #LyricalPress, and the author for the opportunity to catch up with some of my favorite characters! #DyingtoRead #SurvivorsBookClubMysteries #LynnCahoon #bookreview #bookideas #retiredreader

#DyingtoReaed #NetGalley is the newest addition to this series by Lynn Cahoon.
Rarity and her sleuthing friends really need to do their research if they want to help solve the happenings in their town.
Things begin to get strange when Rarity finds a copy of Alice In Wonderland in the bathroom of her bookstore. Why would someone leave it behind and did the person know it was a rare item?
Then when Rarity's friend tells her that her husband is a murder suspect, even though he has dementia, Rarity thinks she's gone down the rabbit hole.
To make things worse, her boyfriend Archer is acting differently, almost avoiding her, which makes her concerned.
Rarity is determined to find the answers and to get her life back on track.
Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for selecting me to read an advanced copy of this book.

While Rareity and Archer are having some distance in their relationship, she patiently waits for him to explain what is going on. In the meantime strange things are happening at the care facility after a surprise death there. The book club gets involved and it takes some serious work to figure it out. Love the characters in this series.

Dying to Read, the 5th book in Lynn Cahoon's wonderful Survivors' Book Club Mystery series is my favorite book in the series so far and I don't think it is just because it is the most recent one I read. The more I learn about the characters, the closer I feel to them, and they are already feeling like personal friends. I didn't agree with Archer's putting Rarity off when she wanted to know why he wanted to put space between them, but I did believe that his feelings were real and reasonable. I don't mind disagreeing with characters as long as there is a basis for their decisions; that is a sign that they are really good. I hurt so much for Shirley as we see more of George's life with dementia, and I admire her so much. Loving someone with late-stage dementia in any form has to be the hardest thing that a person faces. I have watched that shift in people I love, and I think Ms. Cahoon handles it with amazingly well with sensitivity while allowing us a bit of distance because cozy mysteries can handle only so much angst. The mystery was complex and intriguing and the possibility that characters we know were affected drew me in even more than murders sometimes do. I love that Rarity is coming into her own more and more as she sees herself as even more than a survivor. The book club is no longer only for cancer survivors, but Rarity and the others can never leave behind the journey that they still travel. The community spirit and Rarities respect for all ages only add to the community feel that makes the book and the series stand out.
Thank you, NetGalley and Kensington for allowing me to read and review and ARC of the awesome new Dying to Read. I know my friends and followers will love it as much as I did. There is a reason that Lynn Cahoon is one of my favorite cozy mystery authors.

I keep reading this series because I really enjoy the characters - Rarity has such a good group of friends and community around her and honestly, who wouldn’t want to live that way?

I hated the miscommunication storyline with Archer. It was such a bizarre thing for him not to have communicated - he could have given her the cliff notes version if he wasn’t ready to delve into his family history while dealing with his Dad’s declining health. Abruptly just telling Rarity that he didn’t think he should move in with her after all. Boy, bye. It did resolve but honestly - I do think less of him.

Some of the writing felt like it could have used another polish but overall an enjoyable read.

Such a great entry in this series. We have not one, but two mysteries to solve this time around. One is an old. cold case that Drew's dad Jonathon worked on (the only cold case of his entire career), and the other is one that happens at the Care Facility where Shirley's husband George is living. There were plenty of little mysteries as well, and enough suspects to keep me guessing though the entire book.

Rarity Cole has a good start on her new life in Sedona, AZ, owning her own bookshop, which seems to run itself as she has great help from her friend Shirley, and a college girl, Katie. Rarity and her boyfriend, Archer, are about to take the next step in their relationship, until Archer drops the bombshell that he needs to back away from the relationship to deal with something personal, which he does not share with her. Of course, this worries Rarity.
Her friend/coworker Shirley's husband, George, is in the local memory care facility, complaining loudly that someone has killed a friend of his. The heartrending complication is that George no longer recognizes Shirley, and thinks he has a girlfriend in the facility. Another complication is that Rarity's next-door neighbor, Terrance, has become friends with George as a result of Terrance's job trying to figure out why the security system keeps getting turned off. There is also a love triangle with Shirley. So both men have a beef with William Jully, the night administrator of the facility. No surprise, Jully is our murder victim in this cozy mystery. But... whodunit? George and Terrance are both suspects. There are so many complications here!
At the same time, someone has left an old, rare edition of "Alice in Wonderland" in the bookshop's bathroom. Could it be one stolen from Archer's grandmother's house at the time of her murder? So the local gendarme's dad becomes interested in solving the one cold case that slipped away from him -- Marilyn's murder.
So we have two mysteries to solve. Drew (the local detective) gives Rarity and her sleuthing bookclub too much leeway in "investigating" the murders IMHO. But how far is Rarity willing to go in looking into the financial housekeeping at the memory care center? How tangled a web is the returned rare book(s)/grandmother's murder/administrator's murder? What is going on in Archer's life?
The resolution of one of the murders feels like it worked out correctly, but the other feels very rushed, especially after the vast amount of repetition in this cozy. The book could have been two-thirds the length without all the repetition. Another problem for me was that this is book #5 in a series in which I have not read the first four books, and while this could be read as a stand-alone, knowing the back stories would have been helpful. 3 stars.

I don’t often listen to books instead of reading them, but I decided to go the audio book route with Dying to Read after I finished reading Cahoon’s Reading Between the Lies. C.S.E. Cooney is the narrator, and I think she did a very good job of distinguishing the various characters.

Cancer survivor Rarity Cole owns a bookstore in Sedona, Arizona. She also hosts a book club on Tuesday nights at the shop. It began as a mystery book club for cancer survivors, but has become more inclusive and even has an extension for a group of amateur sleuths who investigate and share information with law enforcement. As Rarity moves further in time from her breast cancer experience, she remains committed to healthy practices but seems to see herself less as a survivor as she moves into her new “normal.” It is clear, however, that the cancer and its treatment will always color the perspective of Rarity and the other survivors of cancer.

This book has a lot of plot complications. There is a murder at a Memory Care Center where Shirley, a part-time employee at the bookstore, has placed her husband who no longer recognizes her. There were shenanigans with the security system. Shirley’s husband George is accused of the murder. Another resident claims to be getting ready to marry George. There are many other suspects at the nursing home with a variety of possible motives. Meanwhile, rare copies of some first edition books appear randomly at Rarity’s bookstore. They seem to tie back into a theft/murder cold case. On the personal front, Archer, Rarity’s boyfriend, is ready to move in with her but suddenly stops regular contact causing Rarity to revisit emotional issues experienced with her ex-fiancé who decided she was “no fun anymore” when she was going through her cancer treatments!

Dying to Read is fascinating and the whodunit was a surprise but made sense. I’m looking forward to the next book in the series because clearly that good storyteller Lynn Cahoon has more adventures in mind for Rarity.

"Dying To Read" is book #5 in the "Survivors' Book Club Mystery" by Lynn Cahoon.

A couple of complicated plots in this latest book. A murder of an administrator at the memory care home has Shirley worrying for two men she cares deeply for - her husband George who is a patient there and Terrance a would be suitor if Shirley would let him. The second plot involves the discovery of a rare and valuable book that was among those stolen in a robbery turned murder twenty years earlier. Former officer Jonathon was never able to close the case but now that one of the books has resurfaced, he hopes to find out what really happened and why Archer's grandmother was killed that night.

Rarity and the Survivors' club are working on the cases but it is also stressful for her as she and Archer don't seem to be on the same page. He is being distant and evasive but it takes a while for him to actually tell her what is going on.

The murder at the home took some careful investigating to sort out why the victim was killed. He was a jerk but what action(s) had pushed someone to actually kill him? Several people may have had reasons but there was no way that George or Terrance could have done it. I felt badly for Shirley as she struggled to deal with the stress.

As for the twenty year old case of stolen books and murder, that was more complicated. Why were the books being returned now and by whom? The who and why now eventually became clear but the truth of what happened all those years ago was stunning.

I was really frustrated with Archer (on Rarity's behalf) but it made more sense once he finally told her what was going on.

Overall, an interesting cozy read with wonderful characters.

A recipe is included at the end and the Kindle edition contains a sneak peak of "An Amateur Sleuth's Guide to Murder" which is the first book in Ms. Cahoon's new series "Bainbridge Island Mystery" which comes out in June 2025.

First of all, condolences to Ms. Cahoon on the death of her sister. I commend her for writing such a book about family drama and the nature of found family while losing a member of her immediate family. That could not have been easy. Perhaps like the characters in her book, having something to do helped give her mind a distraction from her real life pain.

There were two mysteries here—a cold case and a current one. There was also the mystery of why Archer was behaving so strangely. I still don't understand why he didn't just tell her what was going on instead of leaving her to believe he wanted out of the relationship, but then—he's a man! The mysteries were well constructed. I was glad to see that Jonathan was around for most of the book.

My only complaint is that the ending was so anticlimactic. Rarity figures out who did it. Tells Drew. Drew arrests and interrogates the murderer off the page, and Rarity briefly tells what happened. Then, Rarity has a final showdown with somebody from the past, and again, instead of showing us, Rarity briefly tells Asher. After investing all that time reading all those pages, I really want to see how it ends, not just be told how it ends. Otherwise, I'd have given it 5 stars. If Ms. Cahoon reads reviews, I'm asking her to please show us instead of telling us the endings of her books.

In a way, the book felt like an ending. I hope this isn't going to be the last book in the series.

I liked her recipe at the end. Ambrosia salad has been a part of family Christmas Eve ever since I can remember. I liked the idea of adding grapes and strawberries in place of the canned mixed fruit. I might make up a small bowl while fresh strawberries are still available. However, I am team NO COCONUT EVER all the way! I like coconut, but not in ambrosia salad! Too gritty!

Dying to Read is #5 in the Surviviors' Book Club cozy series. Rarity continues to work from her bookshop, now with more help, care for her dog Killer and to build up solid relationships in her small town.

Now at the moment her boyfriend Archer seems to be rather distant and Rarity doesn't know why until quite a way in, although the reader gets information before she does. Jonathon, the dad of the local police chief Drew, still hangs out in the shop and writes. He also steps in to walk Rarity home when Archer isn't available. Jonathon has a closed unsolved murder and books that were stolen case, the only one he has from the time he was a local police officer.  That case comes alive again in the book.

But wait there is more! Remember George at the Memory Care centre, Shirley's husband. Having lost his memory George is in residence and of course Shirley while not recognised by him, continues to visit him. All doesn't seem well there and then... a murder.

Of course the team go into action and assist Drew where they can. They can do some looking into things in a way that goes largely unnoticed.

Those who love a small town cozy mystery, where things amble along and by some local sleuthing everything is revealed, in a very low key manner. I liked the characters and felt that this could be a wrap up book of the series.

The Survivors' Book Club is one of my favorites by Lynn Cahoon and the newest addition, Dying To Read is already a favorite. Rarity Cole is embroiled in a mystery, and in a murder, as she tries to help her friend, Shirley, with her dementia affected husband. George no longer remembers his wife, but has found new "love" at the Senior living facility. I appreciated how well Shirley takes care of him and honors her vows. Rarity knows something is 'off'' at the home, but can't quite put her finger on it.
Meanwhile, she has a mystery of sorts brewing at the bookstore . Rarity is "gifted" with an expensive first edition ---that no one claims. If that isn't enough on her plate, her boyfriend is inexplicably giving Rarity the silent treatment. I found that I wanted to drag his reason out of him---she is more patient than I am.
I love my visits to Sedona with Rarity and her friends---I am already looking forward to the next book. This one is available May 6th---less than one week! Don't miss it. My thanks to NetGalley , Kensington, and Lynn Cahoon for the advanced reader copy that I requested.

I would recommend this wonderful read to others who enjoy mysteries with heart and great characters.

I read a preview of this book in book 4 and I was really afraid of what was coming since it indicated that Archer had changed his mind about moving in. This issue is one that is part of Dying to Read, but thankfully we get an understanding of what is behind what Archer didn't say initially.
There is a cold case, and there is a current murder of an unlikable senior care home administrator that are the focus of the the book. 1st edition missing books come to light. Found family is an important topic.
Shirley and her husband George, who has dementia/Alzheimer's, are at the center of the senior care facility storyline.
I like how Lynn Cahoon isn't afraid to address serious subjects. This series deals with surviving cancer, the difficulties of dementia and memory care, the challenges of senior care facilities, and relationship issues.
I enjoyed Dying to Read. In spite of the challenging topics, this really is a fun cozy mystery. It took most the book to suspect who might be the real culprit.
I like all the characters. The way the book wrapped up it might be the last one, but I am hoping that it won't be.
Thanks to Netgalley and Kensington for the opportunity to read the book.

Dying to Read is the fifth cozy mystery in the Survivors’ Book Club Mystery series. When Rarity finds a rare book left in her book store it starts to unravel a mystery and cold case from years ago. On top of that mystery, Shirley’s husband, George, becomes a prime suspect in murder investigation and Rarity and the Book Club are pulled into that case as well. Will Rarity be able to solve one or both mysteries before it’s too late?

I have enjoyed this series since the first book and liked this one too. This mystery was easy to get lost in and kept me guessing with the twists and turns. I really enjoyed how everything tied together in the end. The setting and characters are great and I always love visiting them again. I like how the some of the characters connected to the mystery in the past and thought that was a great way to get to know some of them better. This mystery in this book was really good and I enjoyed the book as a whole. I look forward to seeing what comes next in this series.

Lynn Cahoon has a real gift for weaving storylines that are threaded through with interesting puzzles, families that are composed of unrelated people and characters that grow and change in each successive book. What a treat her books are for her readers. Dying to Read features two unrelated murders committed decades apart, but more importantly, many of the returning characters are dealing with real life problems in a believable way. Rarity Cole, the main character and cancer survivor, moves through her life with purpose and endeavors to live a good life and be a good person. She continues to succeed, even as her personal life hits a major bump in the road. I like the different plot lines and layers in this book and how they sometimes “flirt” with each other, even if they don’t entirely converge. And I love the many returning characters who read true-to-life. I enjoyed this book and recommend it.

Rarity lives in a in a home in Sedona Arizona with a year round swimming pool. She has a dog named Killer, a boyfriend Archer, and owns a bookstore nearby. Archer was about to move in with her when he suddenly tells her he can’t. Meanwhile, her friend and bookstore employee’s husband is living in a care facility which seems to be having some problems. The night manager seems to be causing problems.

Meanwhile, Rarity begins finding old rare books on her store and doesn’t know who is leaving them. She remembers that Archer’s Grandmother had owned lots of them She was killed at a time when four of her books were stolen. The sleuthing group at the bookstore has a lot of information to obtain after a murder at the care facility as well as figuring who was responsible for the years ago murder and theft of books.

I thank Netgalley and Kensingtonbooks for the ARC so I could read the book before publication.

This is one of my favorite series by Cahoon. I really enjoy the characters and being part of their lives as I read each book in the series. The main character, Rarity really stands out as she continues to grow with each addition to the series. She makes an impact on her friends, book club members, customers and the community with all of her actions. This book has a few mysteries flowing through the story. Why is Archer being so mysterious and telling Rarity that now he doesn’t want to move in with her, why is George acting up at the Nursing Home especially with the new Night Manager, who is leaving valuable first editions at the Last Chapter Book Store for Rarity to find, and trying to help Jonathan solve his cold case murder. Can the Rarity and Survivor’s Book Club help find answers to all of these mysteries. A great cozy mystery that I highly recommend.

Rarity and Killer the Yorkie are back and solving multiple mysteries in this latest in an engaging series that should also be fine as a standalone. Who is leaving rare books in Rarity's bookstore? If George didn't kill one of the other men at his care facility (and Rarity is certain he didn't) then who did? And why is Archer acting oddly? Luckily, Rarity not only has Killer but also her pals from the bookstore to figure all of this out. I've been a fan of this series for Rarity and Killer (as well as the mysteries) and the Sedona bookstore setting. Even better, each installment has seen growth in the characters and more complexity in the story. Thanks to netgalley for the ARC. A good cozy read.

Dying to Read is book #5 in the Survivors' Book Club series by Lynn Cahoon.

Rarity Cole is a busy woman. She owns a bookstore, stuffs Easter eggs for a charity event, has a booth at an event, investigates a couple of murders, and deals with odd behavior by her boyfriend, Archer. Rarity has a wonderful group of friends to help her with everything. I’m a bit miffed with Archer. The way everything wrapped up was really well done. And I wasn’t expecting the surprise at the end!

Thank you to the author, Lyrical Press, and NetGalley for the Advanced Reader Copy (ARC) copy of this book and I am voluntarily leaving an honest review.

Rarity has found a first edition of Lewis Carroll's Alice in Wonderland in the bookstores bathroom. She isn't sure who left it there but it is a new mystery for her to figure out. She gets a bigger mystery handed to her from one of her book club members. Shirley's husband, who has dementia, is the prime suspect in a murder at the nursing home. Rarity can't let her friend go through this alone and decides to jump in and help investigate. Follow along as Rarity and the other book club members help Shirley look into the death in hopes of clearing her husbands name. Will they find a killer before something else bad happens?

My first book in the series. This struck me as a direct rip-off of The Thursday Murder Club series, although not nearly as well done.

I didn't really care for Rarity (what a name!) right away, she's not entitled to an opinion about her friend Shirley's decisions in a tough situation. Same with the tiff between Sam and Drew. MYOB, lady. So I doubt I'll be reading any more of the series.

Regarding this book in particular, does the author know anything at all about dementia? Apparently not.

But I did finish it so 2 stars.

“Dying to Read” by Lynn Cahoon book 5 in the Survivors Book Club Mystery series. I love this series, it’s entertaining full of loveable characters and a furbaby named Killer.

Once again the story was engaging, well-written, and I love the setting in the desert town of Sedona Arizona.
Rarity is someone I would love to be friends with or work at her bookstore, and the friends she made were people I would like to hang out with especially Sam, Shirley, Archer and Drew. I found myself thoroughly enjoying the story and I found the 2 romance/life situations making me care even more for the characters as these are things that happen to a lot of us. My mother in law has dementia and I see first hand what it can do to their spouse and the loneliness it can cause.

I devoured this book and can't wait for the next instalment!

I highly recommend this cozy mystery series to all my friends who love a cozy with a strong support system of friends in it.

Rarity is one of those characters that you love. I enjoy her life and her views on it. She loves her pup and treats him the best! There was a mystery with rare books showing up and come to find out they belonged to her beau's family which also has an unsolved murder. Then we also get the murder of a horrible man who took advantage of the elderly. I had a suspicion about who the murderer was but did not guess the why. The ending wasn't full of action but it was satisfying.

4.5 out of 5 Bookstore Bathrooms

This one wins you over quietly. Not with twists or body count, but with warmth, community, and a sharpness behind the softness. The stakes—emotional, not explosive—are still compelling as hell. Dementia, grief, aging romance... all handled with more depth than you’d expect.

It’s rare to find a mystery that feels like a comfort read and still keeps you on your toes. This does both.

Lynn Cahoon is the prolific author of several cozy mystery/romance series including The Survivor's Mystery series of which DYING TO READ is book #5. Rarity is a cancer survivor who owns a bookstore and hosts a book club. One of the book club's members asks for help when her husband, who is in a memory care facility, is accused of murder. A different plot line twist earns Cahoon my 5 stars.
