Morgan L. Busse is a writer by day and a mother by night. She is the author of the Follower of the Word series and the award-winning steampunk series, The Soul Chronicles. Her debut novel, Daughter of Light, was a Christy and Carol Award finalist. During her spare time she enjoys playing games, taking long walks, and dreaming about her next novel.
Since I devoured each book of The Ravenwood Saga in one sitting, I really wanted to believe that my initial rating of Daughter of Light had been too severe when I came back to read the rest of the series 10 years later. But sadly, I couldn't stop getting distracted by the editing. Which also made it very easy to put the book down and play games instead…
While multiple points of view were needed to truly tell the story, and no one wants to hear about day after day, week after week of traveling, it would be impossible to create a timeline for the whole story, as time references were inconsistent from chapter to chapter, POV to POV.
If you ignore the timeline issues, the plot absolutely proceeds as it should and is well done, well-planned, and the overall story is very good. Time proceeds linearly inside of each point of view, and the POV changes are clean and well placed. I was totally cheering and aching with Rowen, Lore, Neirne & Caleb. The faith elements well meshed into the story, with the mercy of The Word quite central.
Then we come back to prepositions, pronouns and articles which were often missing, misplaced or extra. (Not at all what I remember about other books from MLP/Enclave Publishing.)
So if you're one who can dismiss timeline issues and ignore all the little words that are not quite right but don't ruin the understanding of the story, then you can enjoy this well plotted book series.
But if those things irritate you, I'd skip this first offering from Busse, and instead go after the fabulous Ravenwood Saga. Or if steampunk or zombies are your thing, her duologies. (While they're not quite my genre of choice, I don't remember yelling at the books.)
It does appear that her upcoming series will be a prequel to this one though…
Ok so the Ravenwood Saga is still my favorite series by Morgan L Busse, but I really enjoyed this series as well. The premise of angels staying on earth to fight demons, but having to become mortal (yet still powerful) to do so was very interesting. I was surprised that, that wasn’t more of a focus of the story. But I don’t think the themes of acceptance and forgiveness would have been clear if that had been the focus. The world took me some time to follow me understand, but once I did I really enjoyed it. I really enjoyed the characters. I came to really love Nieren and Caleb, but Lore and Rowan were my favorites. I don’t usually like more than 3 perspectives at all, but this was well done. I also found it helpful to understand the motivations of the demons as well. I feel like you could tell this was the first series by this author. It was very well written, but at times it seemed like characters, settings, or some scenes were longer or given more detail than they needed. Overall it was I wonderful series that I thoroughly enjoyed.
Follower of the Word was an incredible trilogy. From the first chapter in Daughter of Light, to the last word in Heir of Hope, these books were unputdownable. If you want to hop on an emotional roller coaster, be inspired, fall in love with characters who become friends, root for them to make good choices or escape their current peril, and see good win in the end, you must read every book in the Follower of the Word series.
This series is like a combination of fantasy, crusades, romance, and action. It's very clean. I love fantasy but only clean fantasy. The way the author wove in faith , belief, and courage to do right in spite of overwhelming odds, was thrilling. I loved all the twists and urns. Could hardly put it down! I will be looking for more books written by her!
Easy reading set in another time and place with some interesting characters. An intriguing storyline with two pairs of strong hero’s and heroines. Fair character development as the story progresses with a writing style more suited to young adult readers.
This is a trilogy to be treasured! I especially love a Christian fantasy that can weave in the truth of the savior, and it was done I. This series so well!
