A British diplomat is murdered in the French Quarter, run through with a sword. In his hand is a metal button from a 200-year-old British Redcoat’s uniform. The FBI and Scotland Yard suspect this is no random murder. A panicked city thinks a ghost walks among them. But the authorities aren’t so sure, and they turn to local historian Emma Eaton for help. She reluctantly pulls herself away from a major restoration project at a dilapidated plantation home. Joining her is her eclectic team of researchers: ex-NFL defensive lineman and archaeologist Gibraltar Jones, salty-tongued old nun Sister Gertrude, and dashing Scotland Yard Inspector Tony Spencer. As the body count rises, they begin to connect the murders to the fate of a missing British soldier from the Battle of New Orleans and to a prominent New Orleans family who may have secrets to hide. But as Emma unravels more of the mystery, it puts her closer to an unbelievable truth, and the point of the sword of The Redcoat.

Wow! I absolutely loved this book. The blending of British and American history was great. Had me guessing who the murderer/serial killer was. Great ending. I’m glad there are three more books to read. This would make a fantastic movie!!
I received this book in a Goodreads First Reads giveaway. I thoroughly enjoyed this mystery set in New Orleans and Baton Rouge. Emma is my kind of heroine: smart, resourceful, and not obsessed with her shoes. Emma Eaton is a historian who is leading the restoration of a historic plantation. As the project is just getting started, she is consulted by representatives of Scotland Yard and the British consulate about the murder of a British diplomat that seems to be related to the Battle of New Orleans in 1815. As Emma becomes enmeshed in the mystery, she enlists the help of her friends: slutty best friend Allie, a realtor; Sister Gertrude, historian for the local convent; Gibraltar, ex-pro-football player and archaeologist; and Mitch and Zip, college friends who own a construction company and who would like to be more than just friends with Emma and Allie. I enjoyed everything about this book. I enjoyed Emma and her friends. I enjoyed the bit of romance. And I enjoyed the setting of New Orleans with its history, tourist attractions and great food and atmosphere. The story kept me guessing until the end. Don't be intimidated by the 521 pages. They go quickly. I look forward to reading more of Emma's adventures.
A British officer is truing to get back to his own lines as the Battle of New Orleans is about to begin, but is shot by his own lines in the fog. A historian and currently heading up the reclamation of an anti bellum plantation house is approached by an English diplomat and a Scotland Yard detective for help in solving the mystery of another English diplomat. Old prominent Family histories are uncovered and a killer in a British officers red coat of the 1800s is on the loose. I enjoyed this one and will be looking for more by this author.
Well written, and kept my interest throughout the novel. In the end, the author wrapped up the mysteries nicely. I'm looking forward to the author's next Emma Eaton novel.
