Management and innovation expert David Silverstein explores why collecting the dots, the information that is all around us, is key to solving problems and developing innovative strategies and breakthrough ideas. Through real-world examples of some of today's leading companies, you will see how dot collection can lead you to be more creative and stay ahead of your competitors. In "One Dot, Two Dots, Get Some New Dots," you will discover: why collecting lots of information is so important, how to accelerate your learning and creativity, and 12 techniques for becoming an expert dot collector.
One Dot, Two Dots, Get Some New Dots is all about why you need to be intellectually curious to succeed in business, and details how you can get better at gathering useful information. By collecting and connecting dots (disconnected information) it is easier to solve problems and develop innovative ideas and breakthrough strategies. In order to come up with the next big thing, or to simply understand the next step for your business, the author believes you first need to gather information. A lot of it. He shows how by having more information at hand you can make better decisions. He also details in each chapter different ways to get the information you need, like by following the news, reading research, asking questions, surrounding yourself with other intellectually curious people, etc. The book is short, but is well written, has good advice and examples.
I enjoyed reading this book because it was a fairly quick read with a lot of useful information about succeeding in today's business environment. Mr. Silverstein has a clear voice which makes it an enjoyable read. My one complaint would be that unless you know about business (either you own your own or have owned in the past) the information might not be as useful. It would be hard to grasp some information if you were thinking about starting a business but hadn't started yet. Although I imagine some information comes with actually experiencing it first hand. Overall, I think this is a great book for those looking to up their business potential.
I loved how Silverstein organizes this book: concise chapters, chock full of examples and things to consider on the road to identifying & collecting dots. As someone who is in a management role at her company, I'm a fan of many of his suggestions: reading (a lot), sharing the research and the work with other like-minded managers or co-workers, asking lots of questions everyday, and compiling the information to figure out the answer to the question/problem/strategy you're working on. Silverstein writes in a way that you can easily grasp and understand how thinking of information as Dots can quickly transform your day-to-day (and long-term) business plans, goals and solutions.
I thought that this book had a lot of great advice for how to get more and better information to help you make business decisions. The author does a really good job of showing how having more information can make such things as solving problems to coming up with new business strategies much easier. I liked that the author gives examples of how others have used seemingly unrelated information to help themselves come up with new products, strategies, and ideas. I think he gives very solid and understandable advice on why finding new information is important, and also gives real advice on different ways to get the information that will apply to you and your business.
Another great book by David Silverstein! I really enjoy Silvetstein's style of writing, he has a way of making a somewhat difficult subject easy to comprehend. I appreciated hearing the stories of how different companies connected the dots. Having real-life examples puts everything into perspective of how connecting the dots works. Remember the best way to create new dots is to read and engage in conversation with people you might not ordinarily find yourself talking to.
I really enjoy Mr. Silverstein's writing. It's concise and informational. This book is a nice, quick read about expanding our knowledge for personal and professional aims. I think it is a wonderful companion to Become an Elite Mental Athlete. However, I don't know if I would get the same benefit if I read this only. I would definitely recommend this to others, and I will be loaning both books to friends.
This is really a great book. Connecting the dots is a perfect concept for success. The author not only gives important examples and lessons in his book but he pretty much explains how adding some "new dots" will lead to even greater success. Although your business may be striving the way it is.. adding some "new dots" might just make it even better! I'd recommend this book to anyone interested or who currently own a business.
