Phantom Menagerie: Stories Inspired by Phantom History House

Rate this book
What if the items that are in the room you’re sitting in right now could share their individual stories? Would you want to know where they came from or who they’ve previously encountered?

That’s the premise behind Phantom Stories Inspired by Phantom History House. The 16 authors featured in this anthology of short horror stories toured the very real Phantom History House, a paranormal-themed bed and breakfast in Tampa, Fla., and imagined stories – some horrifying, others just eerie – about these very real that set the décor and vibe of this travel destination apart from others.

Ghosts, possessions and the metaphysical figure prominently throughout this collection of tales and each will make you question not only how these odd items came to be part of the house, but whether you would want them to be there if you knew their true backstory.

Read through this collection that Bram Stoker Award® winning author Cindy O’Quinn calls “one of the most unique anthologies I’ve had the pleasure of reading.” And adds, “There is something that will tickle everyone’s fancy. That which tickles may also bite. You have been warned.”

I don't know why it took me so long to get around to reviewing this one.

It's a collections of short stories that are inspired by the Phantom History House, a locale I know exactly nothing about and I've only heard of it because I follow one of the authors on Instagram (I have since followed another, they seem like a really fun bunch!).

Since I don't really know the place it felt like a lot of the stories were cursed object centric in some way but there was a good little variety and the stories all had their own unique charm. There was an old-timey feel to most of them which is perfect for those who, like me, get a little nostalgic during the spooky season.

Might edit this review later when I have my reading notes handy.

For full transparency, I authored one of the selections in this anthology, so my review covers the other stories in this book. Whether you've stayed in the amazing Phantom History House B&B or not, you should enjoy the wide range of styles here, not to mention the pure fun that the authors have with the macabre objects housed in the b&b. It starts with a fine selection by Derik Cavignano (who should write more short fiction, as he does a great job with the form!), and ends with a humdinger by Eddie J Morales (there, we see the sly sense of irony that Morales does so well!). In between, there is so much to enjoy, so grab a copy!

What a great collection of stories featuring items from within Phantom History House. The authors really came together to bring readers a mixed bag of treats. Each story is as different as the item and author themselves. This is a great coffee table book for a reader to be able to grab for a quick read then start again with another adventure later.

Wonderful collection of stories by members of the Florida HWA Chapter -- a tribute to the weird and wonderful Phantom History House in Tampa, FL. The stories are diverse and the individual styles and voice of each author play against the others nicely. What made this a joyful read was the absolute sense of community among the writers and the clear love of the Phantom History House.

*Full disclosure: I have a story in this collection, so my review below is for the other stories in this book. *

‘Phantom Menagerie’ is a creepy, spooktacular anthology featuring stories written by some of Florida’s most talented writers. Each tale homes in on a specific item that can be found at Tampa’s very own Phantom History House.

From a haunted photograph to a ship made of human entrails (and everything in between!) this book encompasses a superb collection of spine-tingling and thought-provoking stories, guaranteed to make you want to leave the lights on!

I highly recommend picking up a copy on Amazon, or you may wish to visit the awesome folks (as well as the items in the story!) at Phantom History in person—if you dare!
