“The God of the universe has an amazing plan, and he is putting that plan into action through the preaching of the gospel. This plan has world-shattering implications and is deeply relevant to our lives.”
Matthias Bible Guides assist in personal and group study of various books of the Bible, one book at a time. In this volume, New Testament scholar Lionel Windsor unpacks the book of Ephesians. Having spent years studying Ephesians and teaching from it—at Bible college, at conferences, online, and in the local church—Dr Windsor is ideally placed to guide readers through this magisterial letter from the apostle Paul. He handles the book’s controversies with a mixture of humility and confidence.
Lionel Windsor formerly worked as a photovoltaics engineer at a solar cell research company. He is now an ordained Anglican minister, lecturing in New Testament at Moore College in Sydney.
This is the first Matthias Bible Guide I’ve read. It’s kind of like a biblical commentary introduction for thinking lay leaders. I found some of the strongest sections were: people and groups, locations (brief but important), systematic theology, key words and phrases (especially on ‘fullness/fulfilment’!) and OT connections. Obviously in an introductory book there are points where you’d like to see more of the workings or evidence. But the author can point you to his more detailed online series on Ephesians. And I found the short running commentary of each section too brief really to be much use, although the discussion questions if used might be helpful.
I think this series is most likely to be helpful for Bible study group leaders and for keen lay people who want an entry point to going a bit deeper in their reading of a particular Bible book.
