An arranged marriage with a doomed fae king. A court of shadows and secrets, where falling in love can be lethal.

To broker peace between two fae kingdoms, I agree to marry the king of Evergorne Court, a union built on duty, not desire. I’m doomed to a life without love.

Onboard the king’s ship, I meet his bodyguard, Lore, a brooding shadow of a man who’s maddeningly arrogant and too handsome for his own good. He ignites something wild and dangerous inside me, something I must resist at all costs.

My new husband, King Merrick, is equally stunning. He makes me laugh, and to my surprise, he makes me hope. He offers me kindness, a chance to heal my wounded soul, and he ignites feelings I thought had died with my lost love.

Yet, beneath the intoxicating beauty of Evergorne Court, darkness festers. Secrets weave a web of intrigue, leaving me tangled in a treacherous game where trust is scarce, and desire is lethal.

Love could be my fiercest weapon, or the very thing that tears me apart.

Bride of Ashes, Book 1 in the M/F Kingdom of Shadow & Ruin Series, is full of steamy romance, gothic suspense, and secrets that will challenge everything Reyla thought she knew about the fae world—and herself. Expect arranged marriage, touch her and die, bodyguard, alpha hero, masked ball, fish out of water, forbidden love, enemies to lovers, royalty, and secrets tropes.

Trigger blood, injuries, taking of a life, violence, class systems, poverty, hunger, grief, mourning the loss of a prior love, references to childhood trauma.

5⭐️5🌶

Reyla marries a Fae King Merrick, whom she's never met before, because she agreed to marry him, sight-unseen, in order to secure an army that would save her friends and countrymen.

Lord Lorant aka Lore aka The Viper is the personal bodyguard and best friend to the High Fae King Merrick. He is doing everything in his power not to have feelings for his best friend's wife, but it seems that he can't stay away from the fiery red-haired warrior of a woman.

King Merrick is not without his own secrets. He seems very interested and drawn to his new bride, but he often pulls away and seems to be hiding may things from her. He also requests that she spend time with his body guard, so that they can all be friends.

The tension in this book is 6 out of 5. I could NOT wait to see what happened between these three. There is another book in this arc, and I'm NOT waiting patiently for it!!

Ms. Alaya Wells (@alayawellswrites) any news on this front? Please keep me informed! I beg of you! Also, thank you for this amazing ARC read!

Oh, Alaya, you never cease to amaze and impress me! I was counting the days until Bride of Ashes, Book 1 in Alaya's new series, Kingdom of Shadow of Ruin, was in my hands, and wow, it didn't disappoint. I mean, how could it? Alaya can do no wrong in my eyes. Her books epitome what a perfect romantasy should be—plot & romance intertwined beautifully, masterfully crafted characters, action & epic battles, love, loss, rage, angst, and unyielding passion and devotion.

And so, after the epic finale found in A Crown of Cursed Thorns, the third and last book in the Kingdom of Blighted Thorns series, I knew we were in for another otherworldly, heart-shattering romantasy in this new series, which follows Reyla, a character I knew and already loved. It's hard to compare, and it feels unfair to Reyla since the new series has just begun, but...But I can already see I will love the new series just as much.

There are some differences, and I truly enjoy them—Bride of Ashes offers even more mystery and hidden truths ready for us to uncover. Everything is mysterious about this new Fae kingdom we are getting to know, including its king and the king's bodyguard. Alaya masterfully weaves a tale of grief and loss, new beginnings, new possibilities, arranged marriage, forced proximity, desire, and love. Everything is there, perfectly tangled, just waiting for us to untangle. And, while it may seem there could be a possible love triangle, keep an open mind...Alaya will make sure to surprise you.

The characters are well-written and rounded; Rayla is beautiful inside and outside, and her growth and strength to thrive under challenging circumstances are remarkable. Merrick and Lore are both challenging characters in their own ways; it's hard for me to pick favourites, but Merrick might be it. I love how they feel like a mirror of one another while still being the opposites, if that makes sense.

Bride of Ashes is being released on March 1st. Keep that date in mind, and gift yourself a true and true romantasy you will love forever.

Love, intrigue, and secrets

I loved, loved this first book in this romantasy series. It was definitely a stay up too late, cannot put it down kind of book. I fell head first into the story and was equally desperate to read it all at once and also to savor it and make it last. The storyline was imaginative, the characters were real and relatable, the writing was captivating and the world building phenomenal. There is a good mix of all the yummy things in this one - arranged marriage, forbidden love, lost love, bodyguard, royalty, touch her and die - all swirled in delicious hints of dark secrets, intrigue, and magic. Part of my time reading was definitely spent trying to guess the secrets and solve the mystery of Evergorne Court. Reyla is fae and of royal blood but only recently discovered that she was both of those things. She grew up an orphan Nullen in a border fortress training and fighting with dragons. She lost her true love about the time she learned she was fae and had a powerful fae brother. She agreed to an arranged marriage to solidify the truce between Lydel and Evergorne Court and as a way to start over. Merrick is the king of Evergorne who required the arranged marriage as a condition to provide help to win the war against Reyla’s evil father. Reyla met Merrick’s bodyguard, Lorant, on the ship sailing for Evergorne and married him as Merrick’s proxy. Despite Merrick and Lorant being two very different men, Reyla is drawn to both of them. Despite this, there is no love triangle. I especially love that Reyla’s character, despite her painful past, her powerful family, how the rest of Evergorne Court views her and the task she has taken on, is still kind, self-deprecating, modest, reluctant, and at times resentful which makes her a very likeable and relatable hero. The book has a little bit of everything just like you would expect from this genre - sweet moments, spicy times, real life issues, imperfect characters, dangerous moments, mystery, supernatural creatures, secrets, plot twists, painful pasts, evil actors, and love. I am really looking forward to reading the next book in this series and seeing what happens next with Reyla and Evergorne Court because the ending…. 4.5 stars

3 ⭐️ I wanted to like this book more but I just didn’t really connect with it at all. Not to mention I felt like there were some serious storyline flaws along the way - often I’d find myself having to reread paragraphs to see if I’d missed pieces of information.

DNF. I can’t get into this writing style. It was weird, repetitive, and these characters are boring af. The twist is super easy to guess, and that’s just not fun.

This was really fun. This book moved a bit too quick for my liking, a lot of info dumping at the beginning and some insta-love (or maybe lust). I just felt like our main character was not that fleshed out, we would just randomly get large pieces of information about her history with a lot of questions left unanswered. I liked the world building, but like I said, a lot of info dumping without any substantial explanation of each kingdom and why there is so many issues between them all. I don't really understand where the MC is from and what happened with her dad, or why the Evergorne court has so many enemies. The love interests were fun. Despite the general consensus, I do enjoy a love triangle. The ending had a quite a plot twist that has left me intrigued and makes me want to read the next book. I am hopeful the next book will give us much more information about the Evergorne court curse, whatever is going on with Merrick/Lorant, and more information about our main character's upbringing and past.

DIsappointing

I’ve read other series by this author and I liked the earlier ones, but it seems she is running out of ideas because it seems she has created characters that are there to justify endless pages of ‘steam’ - to the point I have to skip pages just to get past it. I’m not sure I will read book 2 - especially if it is like this one with little character development and constant emphasis on gratuitous boring steam scenes between main characters. The ‘twist’ was obvious - even though it doesn’t really work the way she writes it. Too bad.

Thank you Alaya for the ARC copy!
This was very interesting read, and I definitely feel like I need to go back and read her first trilogy to better understand the world. That aside this book was a lot of fun, plenty of banter, court intrigue and secrets, and does make you ask a lot of questions. I was pretty confused and conflicted for the first half and had my suspicions at the beginning about the relationship between the main characters. I’m glad that part was addressed - even though it ended on a cliffhanger, leaving me with more questions. Overall I can’t wait to continue reading the series and see where everyone ends up!

I really liked the book until the end! I have no issues with the cliffhanger, as it was expected. I enjoyed the dynamics between the characters. I probably would have been fine with this book if I hadn't read the Blighted Thorns in which the FMC- Reyla - was a key character. As someone who has experienced being under a spell and knows how people can be influenced by magic, I struggled with how 'closed off' Reyla was to what was going on around her. The ending was disappointing because, despite all the clues that something wasn't right with the court and her past experience, she still jumped to conclusions

A bit of a chore to finish

This was frustrating, long but predictable, and I skimmed over a lot. I have not read any of the authors preceding books but the twist I could see coming a mile off. I could forgive a predictable plot if the characters were interesting, but i found them a bit bland, especially Merrick but also Reyla. There was a distinct lack of chemistry with the MCs, the reader was told repeatedly that they had the hots for one another but I wasn't feeling it at all, it came across as very forced and unnatural.

This was a struggle to get through. There were clearly obvious mysteries/weirdness happening all around the FMC and she was very passive about it.

It was not a big shock

I think the author is very proud of her "cleverness" but I assure you, we all knew that they were one and the same, you were not subtle at all.

Firstly, thank you to Alaya and her team for sending me an ARC (all opinions are my own), I'm so thankful to be able to read the first part of Reyla's story after absolutely tearing through and loving her Kingdom of Blighted Thorns trilogy! Unfortunately for me, since the Kingdom of Blighted Thorns trilogy was already completed when I discovered it, I have to learn some self control for this new series, but I'm already way too excited and anticipating the next release!

This story had everything I want in a romantasy book - it had plot, intrigue, and a lot of mystery! It was also triple-POV, which can sometimes feel a bit distracting, but this time it definitely added so much to the story! It starts off super fast-paced, and literally does not let up until you're reading the "About the Author" notes at the end of the book, leaving you to process everything you just read, and if you're like me, I had to dive right back in to re-read parts of the book trying to make sure you gather all the breadcrumbs that were left for the reader. I finished this book in one evening, as was the same with her other books, because I quite literally could not put it down. I would go eat dinner, then pick it right back up again, wash up and then right back to reading.

I was so curious about Reyla in the original trilogy, and am so glad we get to dig into her more this series. She's my favorite type of FMC, she's strong, but also smart and not one of those FMCs that think strength is just mouthing off to everyone in power, and also is open-minded and is reasonable, leading to interesting and different relationships with not only the two MMCs, but also everyone around her. She communicates, and is a great representation for grief as she works through her feelings and past. She's honest with herself and isn't one of those characters that spends too much of the book being in denial.

This book also made me laugh out loud a few times, kick my feet but also kept my interest. For any fans of some mystery thrillers, parts of this book definitely also soothed that itch for me. The characters and story also feel like their own characters. You definitely don't have to read the original trilogy to enjoy Reyla's story, but why wouldn't you? It's a completed series and can help bridge the time between the release of this series. Word of warning though - this book does contain spoilers for the original trilogy.

Overall a must-read and the sequel is one of my most anticipated releases!

Alaya Wells returns with a breathtaking new romantasy in Bride of Ashes, the first book in a sequel series that picks up where A Crown of Cursed Hearts (book three of The Kingdom of Blighted Thorns trilogy) left off. Reyla, still haunted by loss and grief, sails to the secretive kingdom of Evergorne to fulfill her arranged marriage to King Merrick. But instead of meeting her betrothed on the journey, she is greeted by his enigmatic bodyguard, Lorant (Lore), who serves as Merrick’s proxy in the marriage ceremony. As political tensions rise, an ancient curse lingers over the kingdom, and unseen enemies threaten her life, Reyla must navigate duty, heartache, and an undeniable pull between two powerful men.

This novel is a slow burn in the best way possible. The first half of the book takes place on the ship, giving readers ample time to connect with Reyla and Lore, who shares an undeniable chemistry with her. The second half shifts focus to Evergorne, where Reyla begins to fall for King Merrick—but who truly holds her heart? The romance unfolds with a delicious mix of tension, longing, and mystery, culminating in a jaw-dropping ending that will leave readers desperate for the next installment.

One of the book’s greatest strengths is its character development. Reyla, once a dragon-trainer and orphaned warrior, evolves into a queen in her own right. Her grief is palpable, yet she never succumbs to despair. Instead, she fights to reclaim her magic, protect herself from assassins, and uncover the truth behind Evergorne’s curse. The dynamic between Reyla, Merrick, and Lore is captivating, but despite the two men vying for her, this isn’t your typical love triangle. Instead, Wells crafts a story where love, duty, and fate are interwoven in unexpected ways.

Beyond the romance, Bride of Ashes delivers intrigue, danger, and phenomenal world-building. The kingdom of Evergorne is shrouded in secrets, and the layers of court politics, supernatural threats, and familial tensions (including an unforgettable villainous mother-in-law) add depth to the story. The introduction of creatures like Reyla’s Nyxin is another highlight, bringing a touch of whimsy and wonder to the novel.

The pacing may feel slower at times, as the book spans only about two weeks, but this allows for meaningful character moments and immersive storytelling. The multi-POV narrative enhances the tension, providing insight into not just Reyla’s struggles, but also the motivations of those around her. Wells’ signature writing style remains gripping—balancing humor, heartache, and high-stakes drama seamlessly.

For fans of the romantasy genre, Bride of Ashes delivers all the beloved tropes:
✅ Fated Mates
✅ Arranged Marriage
✅ Forbidden Romance
✅ “Touch Her and Die”
✅ Courtly Intrigue & Dark Secrets

Though the romance between Reyla and Merrick takes time to develop, Lore’s presence is immediately compelling, making the tension between them utterly irresistible. Whether you’re drawn to grumpy, brooding warriors or noble, duty-bound kings, there’s a love story here to invest in. And for those who enjoy unraveling mysteries, the secrets of Evergorne will keep you theorizing until the very last page.

Final Verdict:

⭐ Plot: 4/5 – A slow burn, but packed with tension, mystery, and surprises.
🔥 Spice: 3/5 – A slow build, but when it delivers… it delivers.
✨ Characters: 5/5 – Reyla’s journey is emotional and powerful, while Lore and Merrick add layers of complexity.
🏰 World-Building: 5/5 – Evergorne is rich with history, curses, and political intrigue.

If you loved The Kingdom of Blighted Thorns, you won’t want to miss this. Bride of Ashes is a spellbinding start to a new adventure, leaving readers eager for more. The sequel can’t come soon enough!

Note: I received an ARC copy in exchange for an honest review

Rating: Started as a 3.5 but the ending gave me a solid 4 stars!
Spice: 3/5 (its a slow crawl, but damn the spice is STEAMING regardless of the slow 'penetrating' burn XD)
Plot: 4/5 - plot is a bit slow to start but its got me intrigued as hell even tho I saw the 'twist' coming from the first chapters, the anticipation of the reveal and just waitttting for that shit to hit the fan was chefs kiss!

Tropes:
-Fated Mates
-Arranged Marriage
-Royalty/Bodyguard
-He falls first
-Golden Retriever MC
-Love Triangle
-Forbidden Romance
-Fae & Dragons
-Shadow Daddy
-Who hurt you?
-Touch her and d!e
(to name a few)

This series follows directly after the Kingdom of Blighted Thorns trilogy (if you haven't read it, please do! its sooooo good and gives a lot more context to Reyla as a character and the world as a whole) and I was hella keen for it because Reyla deserves her happy ending after the trauma and grief the first 3 books had her ride through. I adored Reyla in the first books and my heart broke for her - watching her slowly heal and let go of the pain was bittersweet.

Alaya Wells tackles the topic of loss/grief so well. Not to mention, her world building is beautiful and smart!

Much like the first series, the first book leaves you wanting more, much more. The start of this new trilogy feels the same. I expect book 2 to really pop off. That being said Bride of Ashes is a new twist on the arranged marriage/fated mates & royalty/bodyguard tropes spun together. I am so excited to continue to explore this world and the secrets that loom.

Merrick grew on me... very slowly. I just wasn't feeling him at first. His romance with Reyla felt forced at times and unfortunately their relationship was more telling than showing than I would have liked. (the man won me over with his skills in the end... thats all I will say sdjlkfahlasdjkf)

Versus Merrick's grumpy rival/bestie who instantly had me in a chokehold - Lore was quicker on the uptake for me (maybe its me, i'm the problem with all these red flags and toxic grumpypants hotties... much like Reyla i just cant deny this man, oops). Their chemistry was electric and I was constantly waiting for his chapters koz I ADORE this feral fae >:3

Regardless of my feelings on the romance itself and despite seeing the twists and reveals coming miles away, I am eager for more of this world and these characters. PLUS ALL THE SECRETS ;w; I HAVE THEORIES BUT I NEEEEEEEEEED ANSWERSSSS

!!!! ALSO I didn't quite expect Reyla's reaction to said reveal, which DID surprise me - and I am here for it !!!!!

It is a pleasure to be an ARC reader!

Fated mates, the choice to read both a moody touch her and die male AND a he falls first male perspective was fabulous. You truly get the best of both the tropes!

The world building is intense, as it's the start of a series. However, it lays the world out beautifully for you, revealing just enough to keep you intrigued but not so much it overwhelms. Secrets, riddles, danger, and so much more are featured: the best of fae worlds.

Overall, I really enjoyed reading this book and am eager to read the next due to the cliffhanger and all the potential in the story.

So I am a bit confused… I knew something was up by the writing style… but unless I am misremembering, she saw Lore during the day sometimes and I thought there were times when they were together? So I guess thats why the ending surprised me. This book gives beauty and the beast vibes, with talks of a curse and a whole castle spelled to forget. But turns out the prince and the bodyguard are the same person… so I guess I don’t understand what the curse is. Does she only get to choose one and then that person gets the body forever and the other dies? I am just guessing but I also don’t really want to read book 2. I thought the cliffhanger would be merricks mom trying to kill her at the end, so I was surprised by the turn of events with the scene ending with her seeing merrick change into lore and then stabbing him. Also I didnt really enjoy the three POVS and im not in love with the characters. I also dont think I am too excited for this mystery of the curse to be drawn out for another 3 books….

Unsure on this one.

This book is about a kingdom that has a huge mystery behind it, but Reyla our FMC has no idea. I struggled with really getting into the FMC. On one hand she was strong, clever, but also cunning except for when she wasn't. Like she could tell something was off, but every time she had a chance to ask the King they ended up talking about something else. Also the riddles in the book were just annoying. Also you knew there was something off with the MMC's from the very beginning, but it obviously does not come to fruition until the cliffhanger. I don't know this book just felt off. Banter was good, the spice was about a 2.5/5. World building was just ok. They tease with the dragons, but you don't actually get to meet one in this book. Interesting concept just not sure its enough to keep me interested.

This is a ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ star read of a new series, Kingdom of Shadow and Ruin, that interconnects with another series called Kingdom of Blighted Thorne. I highly recommend reading KoBT first. There are a few nuances that will be missed without reading it (I did not read KoBT first). Understanding this, I would have rated it 3 stars until I realized that it interconnects. So plot holes are actually explained by the other series.

***THE SECOND BOOK OF THE SERIES IS TBD***

Synopsis: A newly minted High Fae from a separate kingdom, reeling from a lost love and a war, willingly pledges herself as a bride to the King from another kingdom. The new kingdom is cursed and yet no one may speak of the curse. The journey from Dragon Rider to Queen is a tumultuous one. She must prove her worth to the court and her new mother-in-law by traversing the political intrigue that plagues the court whilst navigating a curse she is unaware of.

--------------------

Impression: At first, I was all sorts of confused because of the previous series references. There were more than I'd prefer without explanation, but once you understand the references, the story is sewn together well. If you pay close enough attention to what's not being said and what is not on page, you can figure out the twist at the end, but barely. There are plenty of misdirects in this book and it's easily overlooked. It was definitely a fun challenge!

Pacing: The pace of this book is a slow to moderate pace. It stays fairly consistent throughout the book.

***QUOTES, TROPES AND CHARACTERS MAY CONTAIN SPOILERS***

Tropes: Allies to lovers, arranged marriage, forced proximity, curses, political intrigue, fated mates

Spice level: 🌶️🌶️🌶️- Spice is detailed and explicit but mostly groping and oral

Action/War level: 💥💥 Moderately low - There's more political intrigue with assassination attempts than there are of any other action. Adrenaline doesn't quite surge during this book, but it definitely keeps you on edge if you're looking for the mystery in it.

FMC: Reyla - A princess that was raised as an orphan who allows herself to be betrothed to the King of a foreign kingdom. She is strength in the face of adversity and the balance the kingdom needs. She sees equality in all members of her court, regardless of their class level. She is torn between two men.

MMC1: Merrick - The King. He is kind, compassionate, loving, and super supportive. There is a massive draw to Reyla and yet she cannot fathom why. The man who shows her this world and protects her at all costs. He is the epitome of a loving man.

MMC2: Lord Lorant - A shadow wielder who is snarky, grumpy, and passionate. He's a bodyguard and assassin for the King. He is also the one who teaches Reyla how to wield her magic. There's an unexplained draw to this man.

Main antagonist: Erisandra - The queen mother. She's jealous of Reyla taking the crown now that Merrick has married Reyla. She wants power. I'm not sure she even cares for Merrick. She is constantly tormenting Reyla.

Side Characters:

Farris - The nyxin, which is sort of like a doggo. He's so cute!
Lord Briscalar - He's the head of the staff for both the King and Reyla.
Surren - Head guard. Very stoic but always humble and there.
Calista - The elder of the ladies in waiting
Moira - Calista's daughter, also a lady in waiting
Faelith - A lady in waiting in charge of Farris' needs
Valera - A wonderful librarian.

I love the way Alaya Wells writes! Her style flows well, is easy to read but doesn’t lack in intricacy of details and information. It’s a great mix of fantasy, romance, intrigue and humour. I was a huge fan of The Kingdom of Blighted Thorns, so this book was high on my list for this year. It did not disappoint! Thoroughly enjoyed it.

Some favourite tropes to look forward to:
✨ arranged marriage
✨forbidden love
✨enemies to lovers
✨he falls first
✨dark secrets
✨political and court intrigue

I loved the start to this new series by Alaya Wells. I really liked Reyla as a character already from the previous books, so it was good to have her as the FMC in this one. We also have the pleasure of two MMCs who are the complete opposite of each other - one cinnamon roll and the other morally grey/grumpy. Both surrounded by much mystery and raise many questions right from the get go. It’s not your typical love triangle though and we are given little nuggets to show this during the story. This one kept me guessing all the way through though. I thought I’d got it figured out early but nope!
We follow Reyla as she begins the journey to the Fae Kingdom to marry the King. There is intrigue and mystery right from the start as nothing much is known about the King, his people or his Kingdom. We get to find out along with Reyla. She is heading into an arranged marriage while still grieving the loss of the man she loved, but is determined to uphold the alliance that helped win the recent war. This is a new beginning for her and a journey into the unknown and a journey of self discovery too with the new knowledge of her royal position and magic.
The world building and character development are woven together really well and overall the book is well paced. I did initially feel the first half was slower paced but it actually worked well for the story plot and allowed for a deeper insight into the characters before arriving in Evergorne. I liked the way we are given a triple pov and get to see the dynamics and relationships between all three MCs throughout the book.
The suspense and mystery only deepen further when Reyla gets to her new home. There are lots of twists and turns that kept me gripped. Reyla has to be on her guard for enemies both in plain sight and behind the scenes all while trying to come to terms with her new role as Queen and trying to unravel the mysterious goings on around her.
Not surprisingly this one ends on a huge cliffhanger but not quite as I was expecting. I love (and hate) being surprised at the end of a book! It did however leave me wanting the next book immediately! Can’t wait to see where this story goes next.
Thank you to Alaya Wells for the advanced copy it was a privilege to be part of your arc team. The thoughts and opinions in this review are all my own.

Quick Overview:
First off, a huge thanks to Alaya Wells for the ARC! After being utterly captivated by her Kingdom of Blighted Thorns trilogy (seriously, go read that if you haven't—it's a must for understanding the world and characters introduced here), I was eager to dive into Bride of Ashes (Kingdom of Shadow and Ruin). This is the first book in what promises to be an intriguing four-part series. We're following Reyla and her entangled love triangle, plus a hefty dose of secrets and riddles. What more could you want?

Characters:
Reyla, Merrick, and Lorant are at the heart of this story, and boy, do they bring the drama. Merrick and Lorant both have enough secrets to keep us guessing, which makes the dynamic between them all the more delicious.

Plot:
If you've read Wells' debut trilogy, you'll know she loves to start with a lot of questions. Bride of Ashes kicks off with sentient books, cryptic riddles, and a whole load of mystery that keeps you turning pages. Luckily, I binged the first trilogy all at once, so the wait didn’t kill me!

Writing:
Wells' writing is, as always, a joy to read. This time, we get a fresh perspective, told in the first person, which brings a new flavor to her storytelling style. It's a subtle but appreciated shift that adds depth to Reyla’s voice and keeps things fresh.

Romance:
Ah, the romance. This part left me on the fence. It didn't sweep me off my feet as the previous trilogy's romance did, but I'm reserving my full verdict until I've read more. There's potential here, but the sparks didn’t fly for me.

Final Thoughts:
I’m holding out for the series to pick up steam in the second book, which is Wells' usual style. And that cliffhanger? It was a bit expected, but it still managed to catch me off guard. Let’s just say it left me impatiently waiting for the next installment. Alaya Wells knows how to keep us on our toes, and I'm here for it!

✨Bride of Ashes✨

This is it. I’ve decided. Alaya can literally do no wrong in my book. She is a Romantasy master, weaving such delicious pining, tension, spice, banter, mystery, and intrigue all into a beautifully executed fae kingdom that gave me big Beauty and the Beast vibes.

This series is in the same world as her Kingdom of Bitter Magic series but it isn’t necessary to have read it. HOWEVER, to truly understand our FMC and her grief and trauma, I highly recommend it. Not to mention, ITS INCREDIBLE.

Ok, back to Bride. It is the first in a series where Reyla, our fierce warrior FMC, steps into an arranged marriage that helped win the previous war. New to her lineage, her magic, and the fae world, Reyla embarks into a kingdom that has the capability of giving her purpose or destroying her. But more so, our two MMCs have her ensnared by her heart. Both complete opposites, we see an interesting relationship of light and dark between our divinely sweet and protective Merrick with a dirty mouth and our snarly, possessive, but secretly thoughtful Lore. Both are BOOK BOYFRIEND GOALS.

There is so much mystery and secrets and questions, this is a MUST READ. And is NOT a love triangle. Now try to figure that out. 😉

I have loved everything I have read by Alaya and this is no different. She is top tier when it comes to Romantasy. You will never convince me otherwise.

Tropes you may find are two MMCs: one grumpy and morally grey and the other cinnamon roll, hates everyone but her, arranged marriage, he makes her wedding dress, he braids her hair, plot twists, court intrigue, hidden identities, mystery, medium-high spice- this is very much a romance, forced proximity, ALL THE BANTER, cute pet, fated mates, forbidden love, and THAT ENDING. Y’all. Keep your eyes out. This release March 1 and is a must read.

Once again, I am utterly delighted to be a part of Alaya’s arc team. THANK YOU!

Bride of Ashes is an enthralling dive into a world brimming with suspense, secrets, and a hefty dose of spice. This book delivers everything I crave in a good romantasy - a feisty heroine, swoon-worthy love interests, and a plot twist that left me desperate for the next installment.

The main female character, Reyla, is so likable and resilient. I was instantly able to relate to her grief and determination to carry on by agreeing to take part in an arranged marriage to Merrick, the ruler of a rival kingdom. who is surprisingly warm and kind (and also sexy as he**). Then there’s Lore, Merrick’s brooding bodyguard (who’s also sexy as he**). The love triangle is so well crafted, adding a tantalizing layer of tension to the story. The whole thing left me wondering who Reyla would choose, because I certainly wouldn’t be able to.

The Evergorne Court is richly described, and the gothic atmosphere amplifies the sense of mystery and something dangerous lurking beneath the surface. The cliffhanger and plot twist at the very end of the book sets up the next book in the series with masterful intrigue.

There were a few elements of the book that felt a little underdeveloped. Some of the supporting characters came across as one-dimensional, though I believe that may be due to the curse haunting the castle. And, as a particular fan of dragons, I was disappointed that dragons were mentioned, along with the fact that Reyla is a dragon rider, but we never got to see her interacting with any. Hopefully, we’ll get to meet the poor, neglected dragons of Evergorne in the next installment.

Despite these minor issues, I’d highly recommend Bride of Ashes as a must-read for anyone who loves steamy, suspenseful fantasy romance. If you enjoy arranged marriages, love triangles, and shadowy secrets, this book is for you.

Thank you to Alaya and her team for the ARC of her newest novel, Bride of Ashes, the first in her new Kingdom of Shadow & Ruin trilogy.

I’ll admit this is my first Alaya Wells novel and I thoroughly enjoyed myself! From what I gather, this novel picks up after the conclusion of her Kingdom of Blighted Thorns trilogy, and while Bride of Ashes follows a different FMC, Reyla, there are a lot of references back to the original trilogy. I find myself wanting to go back and read the first trilogy now to really understand the world and all that came before. That being said it’s definitely not required to follow along with Reyla’s story in Bride of Ashes.

This romantasy novel has everything I look for, it had intrigue, steam, and a mystery that I could not put down until I finished it. The plot had moments where it felt a little slow moving, the whole novel takes place over about two weeks only. Some of this felt a little like filler that could have cut down on page count. However, this DID give the opportunity for relationship development and world building to happen. The multi person POV gave insight into motivations of the MMCs and the mystery kept me interested along with the slow burn steamy romances. Speaking of which, Merrick has my heart. I loved their relationship arc. Merricks grumpy, brooding bestie Lore also has his fair share of appeal and I am itching for the next novel to see how the twist plays out! Alaya Wells does a wonderful job of hooking the reader with humor, drama and execution of all the tropes we know and love.

I can’t wait for the next installment to learn more about the secrets of the Kingdom of Evergorne, the fallout of the twist, and more development of all the little breadcrumbs the author has left for us. I have so many questions!!

Wow! I loved Alaya’s Kingdom of Blighted Thorns series but I honestly think Kingdom of Shadow and Ruin is going to become my fast favorite!

I love Reyla as an FMC. She’s strong but vulnerable. She didn’t grow up to be a princess/lady of the court but offers herself willingly when King Merrick, in exchange for his help in the war from Blighted Thorns series, wants a willing bride. After suffering her heartbreak of losing her love, Kinart, Reyla sets off on an adventure to get away from her previous life as much as possible.

King Merrick is more than she could have dreamed of. He’s handsome, caring, and devoted to her, but his personal guard, Lore, is mysterious and sexy as well. Drawn to both men, there’s secrets and mysteries that Reyla is starting to discover about the Evergorne court.

Reyla as an FMC is what I like to see. She’s strong willed but also admits faults. She’s not automatically this super powerful person but willing to work on her magic she’s only just discovered. She doesn’t cower to others who look to put her down, but also open to following traditions set by her new home.

The book ends on a cliffhanger and I cannot WAIT for book 2 because I am so proud of myself because I predicted the huge twist pretty early on. I wasn’t 100% sure and Alaya definitely keeps you in suspense but was happy that I predicted correctly. lol

Theres spice 🌶️ in this book but not full on sex, just some foreplay and oral. Still written well but I was aching for some full spice and disappointed we didn’t get it. But I know book 2 will crank it up like Blighted Thorns series did.

Bride of Ashes

4⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

First of all, thank you to the author for granting me an ARC of this book! I will say I throughly enjoyed this story and can’t wait to see what happens next. I found myself flung into a world of secrets and fae, with a wonderfully paced plot & plenty of action and a sprinkling of spice. This tale had me in its grasp from the get go, filled with love, secrets and intrigue. I found myself getting ACOTAR vibes early on and that continued throughout. One thing I loved about this was the FMC going through her grief, after losing love in her past, Reyla describes her grief and how she feels entering into a new potential relationship, I found this really resonated with me and the way it was described was so achingly familiar to my own past and grief and finding love again. It was truly a wonderful part of the plot for me. The secrets and weirdness surrounding the whole court was brilliant and kept me on my toes! There was also a lovely found family vibe beginning too and I look forward to seeing that develop more. I don’t want to say too much, I really don’t want to spoil it but I’d definitely recommend and I really look forward to what comes next!!
I also really need to read her other series, I think it’ll give me a lot of much needed background. Saying that, I found the story easy to follow despite my lack of knowledge entering this world.

Bride of Ashes by Alaya Wells

It is fate that this series is named Kingdom of Shadow and Ruin because I feel as if I became a shadow following Reyla throughout her introduction to Lore, Merrick, and Evergorne Court. I was with her as she began her journey to become who she was destined to be, and I was with her as she was ruined by her stunning revelation. Ruined in the best possible way as all along, I knew what she only learned at the end of book one. It's something I felt deep in my soul from the time she met Lore and then Merrick.

This book is truly one of the best books I've read in many years. That says more than you know as I'm a voracious reader. This book filled my dreams by night and taught me of new worlds by day. I'm enchanted by Reyla, Merrick, and Lore. I'm enchanted with all the characters of this mystical court. The mystery and curse of Evergorne Court will haunt me until all truths are revealed in the final book. At over 500 pages, this book wasn't long enough. I'm left yearning and desperate for more.

Alaya Wells, you are a masterful storyteller, and your words are etched on my heart and soul. I can scarcely wait for the day that we meet again at Evergorne Court.
