A gripping Scottish crime thriller featuring DS Malkie McCulloch, a brilliantly complex detective who will risk everything to protect the innocent, set in the shadow of the Pentland Hills. Perfect for fans of Angela Marsons, JM Dalgliesh and JD Kirk.

My Thoughts /
First and foremost, a huge THANK YOU to NetGalley, Storm Publishing, and author Doug Sinclair, for providing me with a copy of this publication, which allows me to provide you with an unbiased review. Publication date is currently set for October 31, 2024.
A Deadly Flame is the third and latest instalment of the DS Malkie McCulloch series written by author, Doug Sinclair.
Full disclosure; I’ve not yet read the previous books in this series - but was drawn to this one by its title, the blurb, the cover, and - the setting - Scotland.
Scotland: known for its bagpipes, whiskey, imposing landscapes, its moderate and changeable weather, and, the Loch Ness monster; but, Scotland is also a uniquely atmospheric setting for crimes, detectives, and murder.
When Detective Sergeant Malcolm (‘Malkie’) McCulloch and his team are called out to investigate a suspicious warehouse fire, it sets off some serious triggers. Arriving on scene, the team come face to face with a fire that has engulfed the entire warehouse complex. Inside the building, huge stockpiles of whiskey – all stored in wooden barrels ageing gracefully are helping to feed the monstrous inferno.
We learn that Malkie lost his mum in a housefire, when the flame of a lit candle sitting on her bedroom window ledge caught the curtains and engulfed the whole house. Will Malkie be able to put aside his own nightmarish memories of that fateful night and the staggering amount of grief and responsibility he still feels over losing his mum to work this case?
🔥Flaming Yays🔥
🔥Well illustrated characters. Malkie McCullough is a complicated man but an excellent detective. He’s often referred to as being in his ‘Columbo’ pose when he’s mulling something over about the case. And for those of you who are familiar with that reference will immediately relate to DS McCullough. The working relationship between DS McCullough and his partner, DC Stephanie Lang is one of the many things this reader enjoyed about the book. It’s a pairing where there is a deep respect for each other’s strengths and abilities despite the differing age gap. And, as always, things go better with humour, and the pair have their own special type of banter which solidifies their partnership.
She [Lang] turned a page. ‘Graham Cormack. The big, dishy one.’ [Malkie] ‘Can’t say I noticed, but carry on.’
🔥The plot. But first, let me fast forward to the Author’s Note at the end of the book: As I said about books one and two, I never set out to write police procedurals in the traditional sense. I want to write books about the impacts of terrible acts inflicted by ordinary but desperate human beings on others.
👏Kudos, Mr Sinclair, for you have executed that brief superbly.
As in any good police murder mystery there are several story lines which intermingle nicely – think of a jigsaw puzzle – there is only one right combination of pieces to make the whole picture, and Malkie and his team must join the pieces correctly to solve the mystery.
🔥The writing. Sinclair’s writing is succinct and concise, with vivid descriptions of the Scottish landscape and his depiction of the fire and those that fought to contain it was clearly perceptible. The plot is peppered with twists and turns, and the reader is kept in a state of high suspense throughout.
Safe to say this reader is a #teamMalkie convert now.
With thanks to NetGalley and especially to Storm Publishing for the much appreciated arc in return for an honest review. All opinions expressed in this review are my own. The publication date is currently set for October 31, 2024.
A Deadly Flame is the third and latest installment of the DS Malkie McCulloch series written by author, Doug Sinclair. Set in Scotland, this one opens with the discovery of a body in a recent Whisky House fire. Haunted by the loss of his mother in a house fire, this case takes on special meaning and triggers for DS Malkie. I enjoy Malkie's tough wit in this one, third is the series. This can be read as a standalone, while reading the first two will give a little more flavor to Malkie.
Thank you to NetGalley and Storm Publishing for the chance to read and review.
Scottish police procedural mystery with an interesting group of characters. Detective Sergeant Malkie McCulloch and Detective Constable Stephanie Lang have each other’s backs. Malkie is still recovering from the death of his cancer stricken mother in a fire. A candle left burning caused the fire. Malkie had bought her a candle for her birthday. He obsesses that the tragedy might have been his fault. Now eight months later he’s confronted with another fire investigation and the death of someone sleeping inside the warehouse. A fireman on duty dies in the conflagration. Meanwhile Steph is coping with news about her true father, a first rate scumbag and rapist. I went from wondering who these people were to becoming completely immersed in their lives. Now I have to catch-up on previous titles by Sinclair.
A Storm ARC via NetGalley. Many thanks to the author and publisher.
I read A Deadly Flame as a stand-alone, and it's my first encounter with this author. I love reading police procedural crime fiction, but I found this one hard to get into. The plot itself is well thought out, and it is full of complex characters, I just wasn't gripped by it. I think partly because I haven't read the first two in the series and partly because the crimes committed just didn't hold my attention that much. There were parts I enjoyed, and I'm glad to have finished it to know what the outcome was.
Thank you, Storm Publishing, for my advanced copy. My opinions are my own.
Although this is part of a series, it still works as a standalone book. Traumatised after the loss of his mother and family home in a fire, Malkie is confronted by another fire and dead body in a whisky factory. Added to this is the suspicious death of one of the firefighters, and subsequent attacks on another firefighter. This is a richly layered novel, with several themes going on at once. What I really liked was Malkie and Steph's acknowledgment of their weaknesses, yet their actions to overcome these. Both characters are ones I would like to read more about, as well as Deborah. The ending was very poignant. On a side note, in Australia it is easy to get the audiobooks of the first two books, but hard to get ebooks. Thanks to NetGalley and Storm Publishing for a copy to read and review.
Thanks to Netgalley and Storm Publishing for an advance reader copy. If you want a synopsis, click on the book.
This is a down-to-earth Scottish crime novel with a decent plot. I enjoyed the characters and the development of the plot but I tired of the constant references to a tragic event in the main character's past. I appreciate that the reader needs to be reminded of things occasionally but it felt as though it was every other page. Despite that, overall, this is a good read.
I read this as a standalone and still really enjoyed it. After a fire has started at a distillery the police and firemen work together to figure out what really started this fire. After two deaths and relationships uncovered this thriller will keep you guessing!! Thank you NetGalley for the arc!
3.75 ⭐️ (round up to 4) - Doug Sinclair’s ''A Deadly Flame'' is the third installment in a series that immerses readers in a gripping mystery set against the evocative backdrop of a whiskey distillery in Scotland. While I hadn’t read the first two books, Sinclair manages to create a compelling story that stands on its own, though I occasionally felt I was missing some background details from previous installments.
The narrative begins slowly, requiring a bit of patience as it establishes the setting and characters. However, after the first third, the story takes off, pulling readers into its thrilling core. Anna Galbraith's world shatters when she learns that her husband’s distillery has burned to the ground, leaving behind not just the wreckage but also a body inside. Tragically, her husband isn’t the only victim; a young firefighter has also perished, leaving a grief-stricken fiancée just weeks away from their wedding day. This devastating opening sets the stage for a gripping investigation that quickly escalates.
As Detective Sergeant Malkie McCulloch delves into the Galbraith family’s affairs, he uncovers hidden financial struggles that raise questions about the seemingly perfect marriage Anna portrayed. The tension intensifies when another shocking attack on a firefighter occurs, followed by the discovery of another body, assaulted and set alight in their own home. It becomes clear that a frenzied killer is on the loose, and Malkie must confront not only the case but also his own painful memories of his mother’s death in a fire. This personal connection adds emotional depth to his character and heightens the stakes of the investigation.
Sinclair introduces a myriad of characters right from the start, which can be overwhelming. At times, my head was spinning with the number of names thrown at me, and I felt that some characters could have been introduced without their names, especially since not all play a significant role in the story. Additionally, the use of police jargon and abbreviations could benefit from some explanation, as it occasionally added to the confusion for readers unfamiliar with the terminology.
What truly shines in this book is the classic feel of a thrilling BBC detective series translated into literary form. The atmospheric setting of a whiskey distillery not only enhances the narrative but also serves as a character in its own right, adding depth and intrigue to the plot.
Among the well-drawn characters, Malkie stands out as a personal favorite. His perspective, shared through internal thoughts, makes him relatable and easy to root for, providing a nice balance to the more intense moments of the investigation.
Overall, A Deadly Flame is an engaging read that will satisfy fans of crime fiction and psychological thrillers. While it may take some time to fully immerse yourself in the story, the payoff is well worth it, delivering a thrilling experience steeped in the complexities of human relationships and the haunting specter of the past.
Many thanks to NetGalley and Storm Publishing for sending me a digital copy in exchange for my honest review.
Thanks to the publisher and Netgalley for this eARC.
Doug Sinclair’s “A Deadly Flame” is the third installment in the DS Malkie McCulloch series, and it delivers a gripping Scottish crime thriller that will captivate you. Set against the moody backdrop of the Pentland Hills, this novel weaves a complex tapestry of mystery, suspense, and emotional depth.
The story begins with a devastating fire at a whisky distillery, leaving behind charred ruins and a body. DS Malkie McCulloch is thrust into a case that quickly spirals into a labyrinth of secrets and lies. Sinclair masterfully crafts a narrative that is intricate and fast-paced, ensuring the reader is constantly guessing and re-evaluating their theories.
DS Malkie McCulloch is a brilliantly complex detective, haunted by his past yet driven by a relentless pursuit of justice. “A Deadly Flame” is an utterly unputdownable read that will appeal to fans of Angela Marsons and JD Kirk. Highly recommended for anyone looking for a thrilling and emotionally resonant crime novel.
If you love heartfelt police procedurals, you have to read this wonderful 5 star book!
A Deadly Flame, the third installment in Doug Sinclair’s DS Malkie McCulloch series, brings readers a gripping police procedural set against the dramatic Scottish backdrop. With thanks to NetGalley and Storm Publishing, I had the chance to dive into this thrilling novel ahead of its October 31, 2024 release.
When DS Malkie McCulloch is called to a devastating fire at a whisky distillery, the case quickly turns into a tangle of mystery and personal challenges. The flames not only reveal evidence of a sinister crime but also ignite dark memories for Malkie, who’s still haunted by the tragic house fire that claimed his mother’s life. As he works alongside his loyal partner, DC Stephanie Lang, Malkie must set aside his painful past to pursue justice while navigating the complexities of the case.
Sinclair’s ability to evoke the atmospheric Scottish setting—complete with rain-drenched landscapes and misty hills—adds a layer of intensity to the narrative, making the reader feel as though they are right there with Malkie and his team. The plot is beautifully crafted with twists and turns, each clue expertly placed to keep you guessing. Sinclair’s writing is sharp, and his characters are impressively nuanced; Malkie is a complex, relatable detective, balancing his vulnerabilities with his relentless pursuit of truth, and his rapport with Stephanie provides both humor and warmth to the story.
For fans of suspenseful, well-paced crime fiction, A Deadly Flame is a must-read. With its intriguing plot, richly developed characters, and emotional depth, this book cements Sinclair’s series as one of the best in contemporary Scottish crime thrillers.
Thank you to NetGalley and Storm Publishing for the advanced copy.
This book had me gripped from the first page and reading into the wee small hours, Doug Sinclair is a new author to me and this book is the third in the series, it can totally be read as a standalone but I will definitely be reading the first two, I need to know what makes these brilliant, complex characters tick. A fire is the last thing that DS Malkie McCulloch needed after the death of his mother in a house fire, the reality of which Malkie still had to face, his team were worried but Malkie knew that he had to face this, thankfully this fire was in a whiskey distillery not in a house. Malkie was a good detective, sometimes pushing the boundaries, happy to stay as a DS but he had his own demons to fight. Malkie knew that his coping mechanism would be pushed to the limit when a charred body was found at the heart of the fire. Malkie's partner, DC Steph Lang is also a complex character, the product of a rough upbringing, Steph had fought her way to where she is now, having to prove worth in a man's world to gain their respect, Steph was fighting her own demons and not always winning. The gut feeling radar of Malkie and Steph is on full alert, the elegant surgeon wife of the distillery owner was adamant that he was away on business but became distraught when she couldn't reach him, a young female firefighter was crying and yelling accusations when the body of a young male firefighter was dragged from the building and just as the investigation was getting underway, another body was found in a house fire. This book is definitely unputdownable, there are wonderful, if complex, characters, there is nail biting suspense, there are red herrings by the bucketful as Malkie, Steph and the team battle for answers. I love the way that the author has obviously done research for this book, the complexities of running a whiskey distillery etc, a very well deserved five stars. Thank you Storm Publishing and Net Gallery for this ARC, my review is my own.
The third book in the DS Malkie McCulloch series and the trials and tribulations of his life continue to haunt him. He and his colleagues DC Steph Lang and DC Lou Gooch are called out to a whisky warehouse fire where a body has been found. Whilst attending one of the fire officers collapses due to an issue with his breathing apparatus so there are now two incidents to deal with. Firstly was the arson and secondly had the apparatus being deliberately sabotaged? Well written and beautifully descriptive this is a compelling read.
Briefly, whilst Malkie and his team are looking into the case we discover that both Malkie and his best friend and colleague Steph have deep personal family issues which remain unresolved and keep rearing their ugly heads. Indeed Malkie is suddenly faced with two shocking reveals which are going to change his life forever. Whilst both continue to deal with the fall out in their personal lives there is the matter of their investigation to resolve and when a further death is reported matters become urgent.
A gritty story set in Scotland and continues the theme of the maverick detective willing to bend the rules to achieve his purposes. Reading the first two books will give you the background but it is still an excellent read on its own. The plot is so good with great twists and turns and a heightened level of tension as the book progresses. A great read with some terrible acts that have tragic repercussions and what a shocker for Malkie! Loved it.
This is the third book in the DS Malkie McCulloch series that is set in Scotland. The story opens with a body discovered in the aftermath of a fire in the Whiskey Distillery. Malkie struggles in the beginning of this investigation because he is still traumatized by the death of his mother in a house fire. Detective Stephanie Sinclair is his partner, and she is struggling with some personal issues. The two have become close, and they encourage, support and worry about each other a lot. As the two investigate the scene, they discover that one of the firemen died while trying to put the fire out. As details emerge, they become suspicious of the fireman's death. Their investigation leads them to try and discover the identity of the first body as well as the fireman. There are many entanglements with both- and the story takes a dark turn. As with his previous ovels, the atmosphere is dark and adds dimension and tension to the unraveling of the mystery. Malkie and Stephanie are complicated characters, each dealing with traumatic issues. They are honest about their flaws, but this makes them a strong team. I am enjoying getting to know both of them on a deeper level. The mystery is good, and definitely dark. I really enjoyed my time with Malkie! Looking forward to the next installment of this excellent series!
Thank you to NetGalley and Storm Publishing for the ARC. This is my honest and voluntary review.
A Deadly Flame is an exciting police procedural that will keep you guessing and on the edge of your seat right until the very end. All that you know is a whiskey distillery burned to the ground. A body, as yet unidentified, was found inside, and a young firefighter also died, possibly because of faulty equipment. DS Malkie McCulloch is heading up the investigation and must work alongside the fire investigators to discover how the fire started, was it intentional, was the unidentified person a murder victim or a casualty of the fire?
Fingers are pointed, information is withheld, suspects look guilty except for “gut feelings” which don’t count for much in court. Theories are formulated, discarded, brought forth again. It’s non-stop action and thrills.
In addition to the investigation, there is a lot going on in the lives of Malkie, his co-worker and good friend Steph, and others. Disturbing events that may impact their careers. A Deadly Flame is the third book in the DS Malkie McCulloch series. There is enough in this story to make it work as a standalone but you may want to go back and learn the main characters’ backstories.
Thanks to Storm Publishing for providing an advance copy of A Deadly Flame via NetGalley. It kept me glued to the page wondering what would happen next, guessing over and over who was guilty and who was not, and provided a very satisfying conclusion. I voluntarily leave this review; all opinions are my own.
This is the 3rd DS Malkie McCulloch thriller but the first time I've encountered the Scot. A body has been spotted by the fire service as they tackled a blaze at a whisky warehouse, which also claims a fire officer. McCulloch's team are at the scene to gingerly investigate, while mindful of fire service codes. I enjoyed Sinclair's realistic approach in writing a warts and all police procedural, including the profanities that would routinely be used. He clearly knows his way around the police force and often reminds us how foolish the TV detectives are when they assign certain routine checks to their team, outlining each one just for the benefit of the viewers. Not knowing Malkie's full history I didn't have a full sense of him as a person. I liked his loyalty to the team, although it went to extraordinary lengths. Gucci and Steph are both excellent characters and Malkie acknowledged he'd probably be working for them in the future, but didn't mind the idea. The plot was unusual as it combined the efforts of police and fire service, and I liked the tension that created. It ended with me hungry for more, particularly as two enticing angles have been left unexplored, ready for book 4.
4* A bit unbelievable in parts, unless Scottish coppers do things a bit differently to English ones, but an interesting read.
It's not necessary for readers to have picked up books 1 and 2 before diving into this one, as enough info's given so you get an idea of Malkie, Steph and his love interest. The latter doesn't feature too prominently but might be a bit more visible in the next tale as Malkie will likely need emotional support after what he discovers towards the end of this tale.
You don't learn tons about the characters, just enough that you understand why they go about their jobs as they do, what made them who they are. A couple of things shocked me, particularly where Steph us concerned, as how can 'management' not pursue something that's been turned into.sm official complaint?
But, the above aren't the main elements of the tale. The storyline in this is well done, part-sad when you realise the motivations, part-horrifying when it dawns on a character that what she'd kind of done with decent-ish intentions, has had terrible repercussions. There's a lot of fire-brigade talk, so much that it was a tad off-putting, but the storyline and the investigation and outcome were decent.

In book three of the DS Malkie McCulloch series, Malkie is battling more personal demons than ever and there is no real way of disguising the impact this is having on his ability to work the case.
Still profoundly traumatised by the loss of his mother and family home in a fire, Malkie is has to fight to control his spiraling thoughts whisky warehouse. In addition, one of the fire fighters also perishes and questions are raised around the circumstances.
There is a lot going on in this book aside from the main crime investigation and Doug Sinclair masterfully controls the subplots without detracting from the key storyline.
There are some fab characters in this series and the emerging relationships are fascinating on their own, and it is clear there is more to be revealed in future books. Malkie and Steph make for a great team, but Malkie's self-imposed guilt is weighing very heavy on his soul and actions.
This is another dark and gritty Scottish crime thriller that pulls no punches and takes the reader on a vivid and uncomfortable journey as true gruesome horror of the murder is revealed.
A Deadly flame by Doug Sinclair is an exceptionally excellent book. The characters are well developed, and the story will grip you from the beginning. This is a fasted paced book which is full of mystery and suspense. The book is set in Scotland and is a story of DS Malkie McCulloch who is called to a fire in a distillery. Malkie finds there are two fatality's one is a fire fighter and one a civilian. Malkie and his of sider Steph are thrown into this case which has plenty of twists and turns revenge, and the murder of another fire fighter as they work this case. Also, the story of both Malkie and Stephs lives and the issues they face in their personal lives add to the story. The banter and humour they both share solidify their partnership and keeps the readers in suspense until the end. This is the third book but can be read as a standalone book. “An awesome crime thriller. The story was a grabber for sure. It had me from the first chapter... The storyline is dark and twisted, while the characters are real and raw. The whole book is so professionally written that you feel your part of the action, and the ending has left me wanting more books by this author. Thanks to NetGalley and to the publishers of this book for giving me a free advance copy of the book to preview and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
A Deadly Flame by Doug Sinclair is a Scottish crime thriller featuring DS Malkie McCulloch, a brilliantly complex detective who will risk everything to protect the innocent, set in the shadow of the Pentland Hills, which adds such an interesting element to the story.
Anna Galbraith's world shatters when she hears the devastating news: her husband’s whisky distillery has burned to the ground and a body has been found inside. But her husband wasn’t the only victim, a young firefighter perished too, leaving behind a grief-stricken fiancée only weeks away from their wedding day.
DS Malkie McCulloch discovers their financial struggles as he delves into the Galbraith family. Was their marriage less perfect than Anne had made out?
Quite a lot going on in this book and the suspense and action is intriguing. Malkie is a flawed but likable character. I really enjoy his relationship with Steph.
I would recommend this book, this series, and this author.
The third book in the DS Malkie McCulloch series, A Deadly Flame (2024) by Doug Sinclair, is a Scottish police procedural. Not having read the earlier novels was no disadvantage to enjoying this tale with its interesting characters and three subsequent murder cases. Malkie is given an arson call to attend in the middle of the night and has to cool his heels while the firefighters do their work. Body in the burnt-out factory and the death of a firefighter requires Malkie’s team of detectives to investigate. A subsequent murder muddles the cases, with the impact on the protagonist becoming the real focus of the crime fiction tale. A somewhat benign murder mystery tale, with the foibles of Malkie and Steph and various choices of the characters, making for a pleasant read with a three stars rating. As always, the opinions herein are totally my own, freely given and without any inducement. With thanks to Storm Publishing and the author, for an uncorrected advanced review copy for review purposes.
Normally I prefer murder mysteries focused more on solving the crime than on the lives of the detectives working the case. But Malkie and Steph, the two principal officers assigned to a messy case involving a warehouse fire with two casualties, have complex emotional issues that feature at some length in A Deadly Flame and added nice touches of drama to the story.
I found some of the jargon and procedural safety issues for the fire crew that responds to the blaze and loses a crew member a bit TMI, but the way the fire officials and police had to tiptoe around sharing case information was interesting. And there were some excellent surprises in the end. I would definitely read more in this series, for the cases and for the development of the thread about Malkie's mother's death and how Steph deals with her wretched family.
Thanks to Storm Publishing and NetGalley for sharing a complimentary advance copy of the book; this is my voluntary and honest opinion.
Instalment 3 of the DS Malkie McCulloch series and the stories are getting better and better! Once again Malkie is caught up in tragedies and events that test his complex character. With his trusty sidekick DC Steph Lang having her own personal issues, it takes the pair all their fortitude to keep up the high octane needed to solve this latest case. With some cracking one liners, this is DS McCulloch at his best. From a poor first offering, this series has now got itself on track to become a favourite of mine. The second book was such a marked improvement, and this one follows on from that. I would say that books need to be read in order as there is such a lot of background. The only issue I have with this book is that there is a lot of reiteration (ok, we get the idea about who Steph’s biological father is, and Malkie’s mother’s untimely death), with a fair amount of repetition too. Cut back on all that unnecessary filler and this series would easily be a 5* rating. Thank you NetGalley and Storm Publishing.
I really enjoy the series and book 3 is no exception (can also be read as a stand alone). I found it compelling and also interesting as much information about firemen's work. What I particularly enjoy in this series and which is a bit different from many other police books, is that much focus is on the psychology of the police officers. A brilliant team works here, always backing each other, professionally or privately! On top of that, the concept of empathy is ever present. Empathy towards murderers, how is that possible, one might ask? It is, sometimes, as long as it doesn't interfere with justice, it is ok and makes one reflect.... A couple of sub-plots are also dealt with, interesting ones again on a psychological level. I liked the conclusion very much, agreed with it, and now I am waiting for book 4! I received a digital copy from NetGalley and I have voluntarily written an honest review.
A Deadly Flame by Doug Sinclair Pub Date: Oct 31 2024
A Deadly Flame is the third and latest installment of the DS Malkie McCulloch series written by author, Doug Sinclair. If you haven't read the first two books in the series it can be read as a stand-alone. I felt the plot was very good, it kept me hooked the entire time, it was full of twists and turns with lots of mystery and action. The characters were very complex, a very convincing story!
Synopsis: She opens the door to find two police officers waiting on her doorstep. Fear flashes through her. 'Can we come in?' they ask. 'It’s about your husband…'. Anna Galbraith's world shatters when she hears the devastating her husband’s whisky distillery has burned to the ground and a body has been found inside. But her husband wasn’t the only victim – a young firefighter perished too, leaving behind a grief-stricken fiancée only weeks away from their wedding day.
Many thanks to #ADeadlyFlame #NetGalley and #StormPublishing for providing me with an E-ARC of this 5 star book.
DS Malkie McCullough is a complicated man but an excellent detective, if a bit prone to saying the wrong thing. He’s still recovering from his own personal tragedy when he’s forced to confront his nightmares as a body is found in a burnt out whiskey warehouse. As in any good police murder mystery there are several story lines nicely intermingled, just like most real life murder investigations. Add in Malkies team, andf with DC Steph Langs own back story coming to a head it makes exciting and compelling reading.
I like the relationship that Malkie has with his own boss, how protective he is of the few people he considers as friends and the lengths he’s prepared to go to look out for them. The ending is not your usual storybook finish but neither is real life. This is a standalone read, despite being the third book in the series and hopefully not the last.
Thanks to NetGalley, the author and the publishers for the opportunity to read and review this book.
I have read and enjoyed the previous 2 books in this series. This one does refer back to some of the cases in the other books, so although you can read it as a stand-alone, it is probabily better to read the books as the series. As the book starts, Malkie and Steph are investigating a fire in a whisky warehouse. A body is found and a firefighter loses his life during the incident. Malkie's mother also died in a fire so this is difficult for him emotionally. Steph also has problems in her personal life . I enjoyed this book, enough action and you do get a good sense of life in the Scottish town. The characters of Malkie and Steph are developed further and their relationships with others and each other explored. I did think that Malkie's relationship with Deborah felt a bit tacked on rather than being an intrinsic part of the plot . It is a good read on the whole though. Thanks to Net Galley for the ARC
DS MALKIE MCCULLOCH SERIES: A DEADLY FLAME, #3 - Interesting story lines and good characters made this a difficult to put down read. The intensity of emotions and the effects of horrible happenings on the police and the firefighters in their daily lives added to the depth of this immersing story. Source: Netgalley. 5*
LAST TO DIE, #2 - I had to finish this entertaining story in one sitting. I found it predictable because this is how I would have written the story. Interesting and intriguing story lines blended with a variety of interesting characters wove an immersing tapestry of justice, revenge and murder. The last chapter was a perfect ending to this well written book. I enjoyed the fact that although this is the second book of a series, there was no rehashing of the first book, which I have not read; just an interesting story on its own. Source: Netgalley. 15*
DS Malkie McCulloch is a seasoned detective with Police Scotland who acquired a full-blown case of PTSD eight months ago when his mother died and father seriously injured in a house fire. His offsider/partner DC Steph Lang has self worth issues and more due to family issues. Each of them are substantially messed up by their newest case. The fire is not at a residence, but at a distillery, but there was a corpse and also a fireman died. This whole mess is unwoven one thread at a time and there is even suspicion that one of the fireman was the arsonist. The blasted story grabbed me and held on through supper and into the night! I requested and received a free temporary EARC from Storm Publishing via NetGalley. Thank you! #ADeadlyFlame #NetGalley #DSMalkieMcCullochBk3 Avail Oct 31, 2024
Thank you to Storm Publishing and Netgalley for the arc of this amazing read. Book3 of the DS Malkie McCulloch series which I'll have to go back and read. This book is about a distillery that goes up in flames and a body is found plus one of firefighters dies due to faulty BA. DS Malkie McCulloch has to discover who is behind the crime when another fire breaks out. Fantastic read, a binge read to discover who is behind it. The author has you hooked from the very start all the way through, the characters are well developed and executed. This work is gripping and exciting and I had huge empathy for McCulloch whose mother died in his parent's house fire. This is such a good read that it'd be a shame to miss out on it, especially if you love a crime thriller Kerry Kennedy Author
