muy fino. me lo acabo d terminar en la biblio rodeada de gente k estudia números y hace ejercicios…..me he sentido un payaso: hola buenos días estoy leyendo cosas del estructuralismo, ¿quieres que haga tres volteretas?

كتاب متخصص جدا عميق المصطلحات وصعب الأفكار
أكثر ماهمني فيه الدراسة التي كتبت بخصوص رواية دوستويفسكي في قبوي .
تزفيتان كاتب يعشق الثرثرة والدهاليز الفلسفية والأدبية البحتة
أرهقني جدا في كتابه هذا
زيادة لو أن المترجم صرف بعض الوقت في شرح معاني المصطلحات عوضا عن تعريفنا بالجنرالات الروس والنقاد والصحفيين
لكسب فينا ثوابا
..
في قبوي أو رسائل من القبو
تعتبر من أعظم نصوص دوستو الفلسفية
ولقد قام تزفيتان بتحليل كافة الجوانب في هذه الرواية حتى إذا عدت لقرائتها مجددا
ستكتشف جوانب لم تكن في ذهنك وقت القراءة الأولى
..
الفهرس ثري بموضوعات تتحدث عن المسرود لعدة أعمال وكُتّاب أظن أنه سيروق لمتخصصي الدراسة الأدبية ..

Poring over a chapter, setting the book aside for a month, re-reading the chapter and advancing to the next, setting it aside again... I think I've been "reading" this book for two years now. A barista recently remarked as he brought my coffee - "Still going at that one?" As of today, though, I can finally refer to 'The Poetics of Prose' as a book "I've read." Which isn't to say that I won't feel like I need to pick it up again in a few weeks for a refresher.

I should clarify, however, that this is actually a pretty accessible read. Todorov's summaries of concepts by contemporaries like Tynianov, Shklovsky, etc. are generally very lucid and clear, and his choice of subjects keeps the discussion alive and fun where it could be tedious or dry. The topics are complex though, and without an extensive background in structuralism, formalism, or really anything in that neighborhood, I've generally been unable to paraphrase a chapter I'd read mere days ago without revisiting my underlinings and margin notes.

There's a lot to enjoy here, with chapters on language versus literature, speech and writing, story and discourse, reality and verisimilitude, commentary versus reading versus interpretation, etc. If you're looking for something to simply dip into, I can recommend the portions on detective fiction, on Henry James' tales, on the grammar of narrative, and on verisimilitude.

Next I suppose I'm on to Gerard Genette...

Si algo cabe decir primero de esta obra es que requiere para su entendimiento de una cierta formación o lecturas de autores estructuralistas, ya que Tzvetan Todorov viene a interrogar sobre las particularidades que el discurso literario conlleva, es decir expone aquella ‘propiedad abstracta’ que constituye la singularidad de lo literario (la literariedad): como la descripción, o la acción, o la narración. Y si Todorov la define de ‘poética’ se justifica a partir de que cualquier objeto de la poética no es un conjunto de hechos empíricos (obras literarias) «sino una estructura abstracta (la literatura)» (p. 40).

Por tanto estamos ante un método científico —la ‘ciencia de la literatura’—, apoyado eso sí en algunas estructuras de la lingüística (fonológicas, gramaticales, semánticas), por cuanto ella instituye a la literatura misma como objeto de conocimiento y se opone a otras disciplinas, sean la psicología, la sociología… —«Freud hizo análisis de obras literarias: estos pertenecen no a la ‘ciencia literaria’ sino al psicoanálisis» (p.35)—, que hacen de ella su materia de estudio.
Así, el objeto de esta obra será el ‘discurso de la literatura’, y a partir de este sistematizará sus aspectos semánticos (significación y simbolización); registros del habla (concretos/ abstractos, figuras retóricas, discurso polivalente/ monovalente, las huellas de la enunciación…). Los aspectos verbales —donde Gerard Genette es muy visible— (modo, tiempo, visiones, voz). Y los aspectos sintácticos donde aborda estructuras del texto (orden lógico y temporal ), la sintaxis narrativa (asunto del motivo, la función Proppiana, proposiciones narrativas y secuencias) o las especificaciones y reacciones.

Termina la obra con un breve apunte sobre la relación de la poética con la historia literaria, la estética y su función transitoria para el conocimiento más elevado de la literatura, pues como antes mencionamos, al final, la literatura también es objeto de conocimiento de otras ciencias, y esta poética estructuralista, aunque opuesta a tales en cuanto a su método, tan solo viene a aportar la revelación de los discursos literarios. Por tanto, más allá de estos, deberá sacrificarse inextricablemente «en el altar de un conocimiento general» pues no deja de ser consciente Todorov que «los rasgos que caracterizan a la literatura vuelven a encontrarse también fuera de ella» (p. 177).

Me costó un poco leerlo porque en este tema estaba en página en blanco total. pero aprendí un montón. Me obligó a leer otras cosas, porque real es un mundo nuevo para mí, por eso lo recontra disfruté.

لا أعرف إن كان الكتاب تقنيّ أكثر ممّا أحتمل أم هي الترجمة السيئة.
عمومًا، أعجبتني بعض الفصول جدًا جدًا.

Ouf. So much to digest. I like the analysis of classical stories to base a foundation on the construction of grammar, themes, and story telling in general - but there is a lot of vaguery mixed in with some specificity. This goes all over the place and sometimes just feels like plot analysis of the classics...

Well, this made me hit a snag in terms of "ooh, I love academic reading! Maybe exams won't be so bad!"

There were a couple of things that I got from this--but a "couple of things" out of 230+ pages isn't enough. The problem, however, is more with where Todorov is coming from--he's a semiotics/linguist, so he takes concepts from that an applies them to literature, which, like, is interesting, but not what I am into at all. That he's coming from this background also makes slogging through it exactly that: it's dense and verbose. (This could be the translation, to be fair.) He also uses very specific texts--Decameron, The Holy Grail narrative, Henry James, etc.--as his corpus, which is fine; all academics/critics reference particular pieces to make their points. However, what this guy fails to do is take those specifics and make them general. Sure, he talks about genre somewhat (what IS it with these narrative guys and the detective fiction?), but his claims aren't quite universal enough to really be helpful, save a few. Wah wah.

Well, another day, another book.

Critical / theoretical commentary on narrative fiction, discussing devices such as verisimilitude and stories within stories. For me, the chapter "The typology of detective fiction" stands out as particularly entertaining: I have re-read it several times. There is a chapter commenting on the work of Henry James, and one that employs the ideas of Antonin Artaud in an exploration of the purpose and meaning of art.

why do i just now remember reading this one...years after the fact...a year or better since i became a member here? i no longer have my copy alas. i don't recall anything earth-shattering within its pages...don't recall struggling w/it like i may have done so w/derrida or irigaray howsomever one spells her name...speculum and all....margins and all...borderline peoples.

if you have the chance and it is available it is worth a look see.
