Delightful read. Thank you, Penguin Random House Canada, for providing me an advance reading copy. I would want to have a physical copy of this book when it comes out.
I am a cat mom these days and I can relate to Miss Petitfour so much!
The play of words, introducing new words, all in the vein of happiness vibes because our Miss is a true believer in chasing after happiness!
The writing is so much fun to read with lots of activities going on for each chapter. The illustrations are just a treat to the eyes. It feels like Thanksgiving!
Have this one in your collection. Every read will be worth it.
3☆ An Endearing Story with plenty of Quirky Characters.
This is my first book I have read in this new children's adventure series. I would recommend that you read previous books as although there is introductions to Miss Petitfour and her array of loveable quirky cats I do think it would help to read previous storylines.
I had mixed emotions reading this book although I enjoyed reading this book it didn't hold my attention. I definitely think it's more aimed at middle grade readers as there is a fair amount of complex wording and word play, that younger readers would not necessarily relate too.
For me there was far too much word play and teachings of vocabulary rather than concentrating on the actual story. It felt like the book was trying to educate more than being a fun fiction adventure which I what I perceived the story to be. I became a tad put off by the teachings and think children may also lose interest. For example teaching children about rhyming words in the middle of a paragraph it felt a little irrelevant and long winded, and in doing so lost site of the storyline, I had to go back a few sentences to read what was happening.
That said it was an Endearing story, with quirky fun characters, some adorable cats with quirky personalities children will love, some beautiful illustrations which was a nice added touch. It just wasn't for me I'm afraid. This book really has amazing potential I just feel it needs to be a little more focused on the story telling.
Thank you to Penguin Random House Canada & Netgalley for my copy which I reviewed honestly and voluntarily.
I received an advance reader copy of this book to read in exchange for an honest review via netgalley and the publishers.
The Further Adventures of Miss Petitfour is a whimsical and delightful, cozy read - perfect for lazy days. I loved how each of the cats was introduced at the beginning of the book (and there's a lot of them) and the collection of stories within this book about Miss Petitfour and her adventures is so fun and beautifully illustrated. I lobed the authors word play through this book and found it a fantastic book to expand on vocabulary for children. I'd say this book is aimed at aged 10+ due to the vocabulary used. Children are bound to fall in love with Miss Petitfour and her cats. If you love quirky characters and reads, this is definitely a book you need to get!
This book brought happiness to my life. I like it!
This book is sweet, fun, cozy type of thing. The writing style is arranged for young kids, so I think around 6-7 years old and can be older, which is perfect because this is a chapter book but for adults who usually love children's or middle grade books, I don't think all of them can digest it well. This book is perfect for adults who want to wake up their inner child. It reminds you of how fun to be kids, how magical their point of view are, and sometimes we just have to chill!
Miss Petitfour enjoys having adventures that are "just the right size" for a "single, magical day." With her sixteen cats and the aid of a tablecloth as a makeshift balloon, Miss Petitfour soars — which is to say, she rises high in the air and flies — over her charmingly eccentric village, encountering adventures along the way. One never knows where the wind will take her in this delightfully seasonal collection of magical outings: perhaps to the aid of dearly loved friends and neighbors, including a hapless handyman and an onion-loving baby, or to a coconut-confetti parade, or in search of keys, lucky charms or even simply the perfect tablecloth for her next flight. A witty, whimsical, beautifully illustrated collection of tales that celebrate language, storytelling and all the pleasures of life, large and small!
This was a delightful read filled with joy and adventure that warmed my heart. I just couldn’t wait to see what Miss Petitfour and her friendly felines got up to next.
Filled with excitement, fun and adventure this beautifully illustrated book is sure to be a fan for all ages.
This is a difficult book to review. It felt almost like a caricature of a children's book. As a writing exercise it checked all the boxes flawlessly. It had quirky characters doing quirky things. The writing was lighthearted and fun. But it was just off somehow. I liked the idea of a series of short stories following the lively Miss Petitfour and her cats, but none of them were at all interesting.
One very notable problem was that the stories did not seem to fit with the reading level. The stories might have made a decent picture book, but would not likely be of any interest to a child at the level to read it.
I'm not really sure who I would recommend this book to.
I thank Penguin Random House and NetGalley for the opportunity to read and review the advance copy of this book.
Oh dear, being a pet lover, especially to this adorable feline 🐈 just make me more excited than ever. Requested, then, getting super anxious waiting whether @netgalley @penguinrandomca going to give me, their green light or not😂. Alhamdulillah, I got to read it (thank you so much for the approval!!) and became an immediate lover of the author's writing style. And oh, I need to mention the cute illustrations works like wonders!! Well done 👏🏻💗
I rarely pick a book looking for escapism but dear, I needed it so badly!! (With life getting more hectic and chaotic.) Well, back to the book, I loved that it's not only taken me on fantastical adventures (expect more than one! on hunts for onions, finding the meaning on the missing 🔑, snowball fight, a well-created plan turns chaotic😂, food falls out from the skies hilariously and much more –not to ruin the fun, of course!!). I learn about maps, some delectable delicacies 😋 (send me some Cinnamon roll and fish pies, anyone!! 🤤), big words small words, etc. But most importantly, weeeee, off I went with Miss Petitfour and the gangs of feline🚀
The author also does her best to explain what is what in a jolly yet tender voice, with her, continuously repeating “that is to say..." hehe, I understand it and thus, love it. Do not assume adult knows all, okay!😹. You get what I mean right? Frankly, it makes learning more amusing; like sitting in a classroom full of eager and exciting children who wanted to take part because it was simply cosy; tremendously cosy and there's me who invisibly sit around, giggling, head tilt left and right hoping I'm not missing a thing of what's being said😂. I can even imagine my friend Mayah @readmayahread reading it out aloud. Aha! 🤭
The Further Adventures of Miss Petitfour will comes out on 30 August. But, do keep an eye on it. No regret! And while at it, I'm adding the first book to my wishlist ❤😆
THE FURTHER ADVENTURES OF MISS PETITFOUR by Anne Michaels; Illustrated by Emma Block Penguin Random House Canada, Tundra Pub Date: Aug 30
I simply adored this book, starting with that charming cover! The story of Miss Petitfour and her collection of cats won my heart, with their beautifully illustrated adventures capturing the simple joys of living. Perfect for children and adults alike who seek comfort and escape from the real world. Can't wait 'til the next delightful tale!
Thanks to the author, Penguin Random House Canada, Tundra, and NetGalley for the ARC. Opinions are mine.
4.5 I was very pleased to see more adventures for the very charming Miss Petitfour. A very unique lady indeed, she is always excited for day of simple delights (like little desserts, fresh food, good friends, and a trip through the air on her travelling tablecloths! She also enjoys an adventure now and again.
I live the emphasis on rhyming and vocabulary, done in a very proper way. My daughter loves that she is like Anne of Green Gables and Mary Poppins - and that each of her cats has its own personality.
The illustrations within the short stories are beautiful- they are done so delicately and complement the stories so well!
Thanks to Netgalley & Penguin Random House Canada for the advanced reading copy!
I was in the mood for cozy, and this book definitely gave me cozy. I also ordered the first book in this series, but this one came first, so I thought what the heck.
Miss Petitfour is an independent lady, a baker, and the proud pet mama of 16 cats; oh, and she just happens to be a bit magical (taking to the skies using themed tablecloths like hot air balloons to carry her and her cats about town). Each of the cats has a distinct personality- my favorite being Clasby who loves to draw and paint (plus his name reminds me of Gatsby; Catsby would have worked even better:). The stories are light hearted and feature lots of descriptions of food, especially desserts. Coziness, cats, and culinary delights - what’s not to love!
The illustrations are by the amazing Emma Block (whom I’ve had the pleasure of speaking to about the art of illustrating - a dream for me since I am also an illustrator). They perfectly capture the tone and wonderful word play in the story. I can’t wait to receive the first story!
I want to thank NetGalley and the author for giving the opportunity to read this book.
I absolutely loved this collection of stories! It had the whimsy of Mary Poppins with the extra quirk of the cats! The stories, while never intense, are quiet and comforting. There are endless descriptions of delectable foods and cheery gatherings. I loved the sweet moments of these stories. I never read the first book in this series, but I love the voice and the prose. Some of the sentences ran on a tad bit longer than some may prefer, but their sweetness and quirk was enjoyable, no matter the length. I would heartily recommend these stories to any Mary Poppins fan.
Continuing Miss Petitfour’s adventures, Anne Michael’s serves up more whimsical episodes of the tablecloth flier and her many cats. The illustrations are created again by Emma Block, and have a light, spirited feel, and continue to delight. We see more of the town Miss Petitfour lives by, and watch as she and the cats both hinder and help their neighbours. Of course, there are no bad feelings in this story; instead, everyone is kind, considerate, and each episode ends happily. It was lovely, and just what I needed.
Thank you to Netgalley and to Penguin Random House Canada for this ARC in exchange for my review.
Full of whimsy and heart and a poet's attention to detail, the sort of book that is perfect when one is feeling under the weather. The illustrations are endearing. Also, I would have loved this as a kid even though the cats do not always act in plausibly cat ways and I had strong opinions about that as a kid ... Which means everything else about it is quite topping!!
(NB: I received a finished copy of this from the publisher.)
This is a darling children’s book. It teaches about homophones, rhymes, palindromes, and more. The illustrations are whimsical and the story is humorous and entertaining. I’m not a big cat person but despite the abundance of cats I really enjoyed the book. My only annoyance was the excessive use of long hyphenated last names. At times it became tiresome. Other than that, it was a wonderful, enjoyable collection of short stories centering around Miss Petitfour and her cars.
Thank you NetGalley and the publisher for sending me the e-ARC of this copy for my honest review. I absolutely LOVED this collection of stories! I adore the fun lofty wordplay of both these books and so does my 7-year-old! The first one has been read over and over in our house by everyone including grandparents. I was so excited to see the second available. I’m pretty sure this second one will be read by everyone too.
If you recall, we have been on splendid-yet-comfortable adventures with the delightful Miss Petitfour and her (many) cats before. All it takes is to hold the hand (or paw) of Miss Petitfour (or one of her cats) and take off with the wind as it fills up one of Miss Petitfour’s tablecloths like a hot air balloon and takes us for a gentle floaty ride across the village.
So I was beyond delighted when I saw that a sequel was on it’s way. HUGE thanks to Netgalley and the publisher Penguin Random House for sending me an eARC for a review!
This second volume of Miss Petitfour’s adventures takes us a little further into the countryside and we meet a few more of Miss Petitfour’s friends. But don’t worry- it’s not too far, and the new friends we meet are just as nice and cosy, and love food and spending time with friends as much as we do! There are also delightful digressions where we blow off the charted path to learn big words or new concepts before we get back on course- in fact, the first digression is to explain what a ‘digression’ is! 😊
The adventures in the book take place across the year, so we get to experience the joy of tablecloth flying in all the different seasons: a smooth ride on a gentle spring breeze that ends in a delightful supper of golden omelettes, potato wedges and thick toast slathered with butter; a delicious ride on a bright raspberry-scented summer morning in which the cats, Miss Petitfour, and her friends Mr Coneybeare and his brother the coconut king empty backpackfuls of snow-like edible coconut confetti- i.e. Confedible- all over the village parade; an exciting ride on a brisk autumn breeze to watch the village relay race; and a glorious ride on a shimmery frosty winter wind that sharpens everyone’s appetite and calls for a feast of eclairs and cream horns and cheese soufflé and biscuits and puddings and cupcakes.
Like the earlier book, there are little sparkling nuggets of wisdom, whimsy and wonder, as well as delicate, enchanting illustrations sprinkled throughout the book. Together, they make this book a delight and a must-have on my shelf- the eARC just doesn’t cut it! Will share a few wise and wonderful excerpts below for your reading pleasure. :)
Excerpts:
Miss Petitfour was a firm believer in happiness. She knew that sometimes we find happiness and sometimes it finds us – and sometimes we make it and sometimes we bake it.
Everyone, thought Miss Petitfour, has their own special recipe and secret ingredients for making happiness. And Miss Petitfour knew that from a lot of small happinesses will grow one big happiness.
Furry flight was happiness of a sublime kind, always special, always an adventure, with always the pleasure of returning home, fullblown with joy.
Mr. Eddington was always jolly no matter what: because when everything was fine and no one needed help, he was glad, and when something was amiss, he was glad he could help out.
Miss Petitfour and the cats would ride the wind and arrive at Mr. Eddington’s shop sometime between breakfast and lunchtime, that is, around munchtime.
People often say, “Don’t be so shy,” but that’s like saying “Don’t have size four feet” or “Don’t have blue eyes” or “Don’t have three freckles in a row.” These are exactly the sorts of things that make you yourself.
Miss Petitfour, with her friends around her, felt the entire beauty of the night was inside her heart.
What dream is not a dream of home after all? And sometimes, thought Miss Petitfour, looking around at her dear ones, there are wonderful adventures to be had just by looking into a face you love, adventures when the tablecloth never leaves the table, adventures that need no luggage and lead us everywhere and back again, from the beginning of happiness to its never end.
I can't believe it's almost been 7 years since I read the first book of adventures about Miss Petitfour and her (16? I think?) cats. This follow-up book oozes coziness, and every story starts with telling the reader what season it takes place in. The author then builds the setting around that; a perfect spring wind, a crisp fall day with pumpkins dotting the hillside; a cold winter night with ice covered branches "sparkling in the moonlight". Each story has a touch of whimsy. Miss Petitfour travels the countryside with her cats by way of tablecloth, which she uses as a parachute to bring her from one place to another. The inhabitants of the village are charming and mostly memorable.
The story sprinkles in lessons on wordplay. It explains rhymes, homonyms, synonyms, homophones and more, and uses a clever highlighting technique to call attention to the words when needed. These stories could have some limited use in a classroom setting, but I'm not sure if they'll draw in your average upper elementary/middle school reader, and the language is too advanced for most early readers. I do think this collection of stories would make excellent an read-aloud at home for the right kid- especially kids who like a more relaxed, low stakes story like The Vanderbeekers or for kids who just love cats.
My one small complaint is with the third story, which featured my favorite season (fall! Hurray!) but was riddled with incredibly long names for every character who was running in the fall relay race. I ended up skimming a lot of the chapter because my brain just couldn't handle all those long names (one after another, after another) all strung together like that. It made my head hurt.
I do hope Miss Petitfour and her cats (especially Minky!) go on more adventures. This is definitely a book we'll add to our collection here at the library, if only because we're all typical cat lovers here.
The Further Adventures of Miss Petitfour offers a language-rich literary adventure! Idioms, rhyming words, and vocabulary builders (with entertaining & explanatory asides by the narrator) all add to the fun. I especially loved the use of various colors to emphasize specific words. Miss Petitfour is a perfect mix of Amelia Bedelia, Mary Poppins, and Miss Piggle-Wiggle. From beginning to end, Anne Michael's book is full of humor, life lessons, and lots of charm! The illustrations by Emma Block perfectly reflect the whimsical nature of Miss Petitfour.
Each chapter involves a new adventure in Miss. Petitfour's life along with her very interesting entourage of feline characters. I love that the author gives a thorough introduction to each cat by name (and offers a glimpse into their unique personality). And the supporting characters that Miss Petitfour interacts with offer a fascinating cross-section of people. Miss Petitfour handles every problem with imagination and calm. While this is not the first book about Miss Petitfour, it does not have to be read in order. Each chapter is a stand-alone adventure that offers a nice bridge for youngsters between picture books and chapter books.
I highly recommend this book for any age. It really must be read aloud for maximum enjoyment. Even better, have children act out the story as they listen. Everyone needs a Miss Petitfour in their life so grab a copy for your school and home library!
Disclaimer: I received a free digital copy of The Further Adventures of Miss Petitfour from NetGalley for the purpose of review. No other compensation was received.
I suspect quite strongly that The Further Adventures of Miss Petitfour is a book best experienced when read aloud. The art is delightful but the wordplay is definitely meant to be shared and experienced as tongue twisters and trying desperately not to trip over the words as the stories unfold.
I think the art is gorgeous. The book is stunning and nearly every illustration looks ready to be framed and hung around the house (I'm a cat person, what can I say?) and I'm going to have to hunt down the first book because the stories themselves are cute and charming.
You've likely heard of the rule of three, but this book seems to believe three is just a starting point. I'd wager the rule of 16 is more what it's after and after awhile it's exhausting. Not even one of the characters in the race story commenting how long it takes just to say everyone's names is enough to make up for having to read ALL those names repeatedly. I can hear my younger self giggling as someone tried in vain to keep up but I can also tell that after awhile the reader would tire of it and that's not exactly a great thing in a book. There are a few too many digressions and if one scaled things back just maybe five percent, it'd be a little less too, too much.
But if too, too much is your thing or you simply love beautiful books that you can read aloud, this is definitely worth a shot.
I received a copy of this book for review and this is the honest review.
The Further Adventures of Miss Petitfour is a delightful follow-up to The Adventures of Miss Petitfour, brimming with whimsy and charm. Author and illustrator Anne Michaels invites readers into a magical world where everyday moments transform into enchanting escapades, all accompanied by Miss Petitfour’s loyal team of fluttering feline companions.
The storytelling is light, witty, and brimming with wordplay, making it a joy for both children and adults who appreciate playful language and imaginative tales. Michaels weaves whimsical adventures that feel like a comforting cup of tea on a cozy day, complete with a touch of airborne adventure.
The artwork is nothing short of breathtaking. The intricate illustrations capture the essence of Miss Petitfour's quirky and enchanting world. The delicate use of color and detail brings the characters and settings to life, creating an immersive experience that perfectly complements the text.
This book is a celebration of whimsy, creativity, and the small joys of life. Whether read aloud or savored quietly, The Further Adventures of Miss Petitfour is a treasure for readers who love beautifully illustrated, heartwarming stories that tickle the imagination.
The first thing that you notice as you open the book is the gorgeous watercolour illustrations. They elevated my reading experience by a mile. It turns out that this wasn't the first adventure book of Miss Petitfour, but it does not matter if this book found its way to you first because the author beautifully introduces her and her cats again in this one. This book was so reminiscent of Enid Blyton's books. Especially the adventures of Mr. Pink Whistle. I am pretty sure that the book would be great to teach middle graders new words and introduce them to various aspects of language like rhymes, synonyms etc. But I am pretty sure it would be far advanced for any children younger than that. I can't believe I am saying this but there are too many cats to follow. I have forgotten almost all their names, by the time I am witing this feedback. I adore cats, but there are way too many for me personally, to keep track of. Also the text could have been more concise. Too much going on at the same time. The illustrations makes it worth the read, but I think the narration can be trimmed a bit. Overall, I really enjoyed the book.
Thank you Penguin Random House and NetGalley for the ARC
From Goodreads: Miss Petitfour enjoys having adventures that are “just the right size” for a “single, magical day.” With her sixteen cats and the aid of a tablecloth as a makeshift balloon, Miss Petitfour soars — which is to say, she rises high in the air and flies — over her charmingly eccentric village, encountering adventures along the way.
From Leona: I did enjoy this book but not sure if for grades 1-4. I would recommend an adult first read this book and then read it to a child. It is full of rhymes, new words, adventure and cats who have special talents. The drawings are fun and help the book. I gave it a 5 star rating. I won a copy of the paperback from LibraryThing.
This is an adorable chapter book for ages 6 to 9 (according to seller's information). I, however, think that the style of writing and quantity of text make this suitable for a more broader reading age. Perhaps upward to age 12. The story meanders with off-shoot thoughts and explanations frequently tucked in the middle of a paragraph describing a scene or action.
While it can be a bit confusing, it can be a delight as well. That's because it is so akin to how a person tells a story. Sometimes it is just hard to stick to the point without telling the listener or reader something else that pops into the storyteller's mind. I just love it.
Whimsical. Sweet. Entertaining. A bit magical in its charm. And for cat lovers a sheer delight.
The illustrations are lovely, charming, very appealing. The text is divided into about four chapters or "stories." The chapters are longish for young readers, but challenges are how one learns and grows in skill.
I recommend this lovely book. I won a copy of this book.
I love the art in this book. Its well done and super super cute. I enjoyed seeing each cat, and also learning about each cat and their personality. I enjoyed each of the stories (5 total). Each adventure was different, silly, and I enjoyed reading how each cat had its own personality and was included throughout. I also really liked that while this was a book full of silly adventures it also included learning without seeming like it was learning. So the author would pick a word, make the definition fit into the story line while explaining it but it doesn't seem like it's a learning lesson, or coming straight out of the dictionary. I think this is very creative, and I really enjoyed it. This is definitely something I will be buying a copy of(rather than kindle reading) and reading with my kiddos.
I received an ARC of this book via netgalley for my honest review. Thank you to the publisher, Netgalley, and the author!
A book with a myriad of felines and a Mary Poppins-infused world? Well that sounds like something I would enjoy.
I find the overall aesthetics extremely lovely, the illustrations are all very sweet and endearing, and the pastel tones very appeasing. The book is clearly worth contemplating.
As for the content, it’s most definitely quirky, with lots of plays on words and fun characters. I mean, all those cats are just too precious.
It is just too bad that the all-out eccentricity wasn’t combined with a compelling story to follow. A lot of work clearly went into the writing style, but the beautiful musicality of words takes over at the expense of the action that isn’t engaging enough.
So, all in all, a bit of mixed review. Thanks to Penguin Random House Canada for this ARC in exchange for an honest opinion.
The first time I have read one of these Books & decided to see whether it would be suitable for my youngest grandchildren in Japan ,& the answer is yes .The Book & it's illustrations are truly delightful & a fantastic way to add more complex words into English in a fun way .#GoodReads, #Netgalley, #FB, #Instagram , #, #, #.
This book is so cute, from the cover to all illustrations inside, and of course its story! Miss Petitfour reminded me to Mary Poppins, but plus with CATS! Lots of cats and they're so sweet. My favorit is the tiniest one, Minky. All cat lovers must enjoy this.
Oh, I remember how this book made me want to eat desserts!
This book is charming and very delightful. Miss Petitfour is such a simple lady with lots of fun adventures. I wish to have her tablecloths and travel with it!
There were some portions of word play and vocabulary teaching in the story since this book target are children and middle graders. They might enjoy them too.
Thank you to Penguin Random House Canada & Netgalley for my copy which I reviewed honestly and voluntarily.
The ARC of this book was provided by the publisher via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
The Further Adventures of Miss Petitfour was a very charming series of short stories, though I wish I had been able to read the physical copy rather than the ebook. The ebook wasn't able to capture the illustrations, typography, and spacing as well as a physical book could, I'm sure. Harkening back to Mary Poppins and The Phantom Tollbooth, Miss Petitfour's stories teach children words and literary devices in and amongst the whimsical, nonsensical stories. I found some of the self-admitted digressions and broken fourth walls a bit tedious, even if they were teaching moments, but overall enjoyed the silly meanderings of Miss Petitfour and her cats.
This is quite fun tale. I love how many cats that Miss Petitfour has and how they each have such a distinct personality that comes to play on all her different adventures. This book has original Mary Poppin vibes, but I love how it is its own unique spin. The fact that she has a tablecloth for every season, just means she is very much one of my people. The only thing that I can see with this book is this one of those books you really have to find the right reader for. The word play alone makes this a book that would be better geared towards a higher end reader. I do apricate when a word that kid might not know is used a lot of time there are descriptions that help the reader figure out what it means in that context. Overall, this is a fun book, one though that I might not recommend unless a kid enjoys this type of story.
