The only thing worse than her dog… is the man trying to take him away.

Journalist Caprice Phipps is no stranger to heartbreak—two years ago, she lost the only man who ever mattered. Since then, she’s been head down, chasing leads, too busy building her career to dwell on past regrets. But her coping skills hit a wall when she receives an unexpected gift from her lost love—his dog.

Dog trainer Drew Forbes can’t understand why his brother left Rufus, a war dog that meant everything to him, to the woman who drove him to end his life. Cold-hearted Caprice has no business owning a chihuahua, let alone his brother’s military-trained Belgian Malinois. But when Drew demands Caprice hand Rufus over, he’s shocked by her unequivocal no.

Caprice hates dogs almost as much as she hates Drew Forbes, the man who turned his back on his brother. But when Rufus wreaks havoc on her life, jeopardizing the biggest story of her career, she finds herself crawling to Drew for help. And he’s only too happy to prove his point. But working together unleashes feelings—about the past, and each other—that could change everything Caprice and Drew believe.

Thank you to netgalley for the opportunity to read this book early! I ate this book up, but I’m going to have to rate it 3 stars. I absolutely loved how the fmc was not a doormat as that is so common nowadays and just how determined she was to not let a man get his way. Go off queen.

The one thing I didn’t love though was the progression of the relationship.. I could see when they finally did stop hating each other and became friends. What I didn’t see was when they fell in love. I felt like I missed a part of the story. They absolutely couldn’t stand each other 10 pages ago and you’re telling me they’re in love now? Nah I don’t buy it. I would’ve loved to see a bit more development into their romantic relationship.

Finally, this book did a good job repping mental health and suicide. I loved the emphasis on how it has nothing to do with external forces and everything to do with internal. The author did a really good job with it. ⭐️⭐️⭐️

As a dog lover, I instantly wanted to read this book—it has all the ingredients of things I love in a modern romance: dogs, dogs, and more dogs! I absolutely loved Rufus! 🐾 As a fellow Belgian Malinois owner, I could absolutely relate to the challenges the main character faced with a high-energy dog, especially the destructive behavior in the beginning (RIP socks!). I felt like I went through a lot of the main character's own struggles with learning to take care of a high-drive dog.

Love In Training by Emilia Reed is far more than a simple romance; it’s a deeply emotional journey of grief and healing.

The female main character, Caprice Phipps, is a journalist with experience writing about exposing injustice. I loved how the author portrayed Caprice as a strong, capable FMC who works out and takes care of herself—a refreshing change from the common trope of FMCs who hate working out, which can get old. It was heartbreakingly sad to read her perspective of being constantly on edge and hyper-aware of her surroundings, a consequence of having dealt with serious stalking in the past.

Although Caprice describes herself as not being a “dog person,” she inherits Rufus, a military working dog with severe PTSD, from her lost love. This unexpected inheritance instantly puts her in conflict and butting heads with K9 dog trainer Drew Forbes, the brother of her first love, who blames her for the tragedy. Throughout the story, the author explores heavy themes like grief, depression, and forgiveness with sincerity. Check the triggers for any sensitive content warnings that might be difficult to process. Rufus’s struggle mirrors Caprice's own, creating a unique, heartfelt path to connection and healing for the three characters. This is a satisfying and unexpectedly moving story about finding love and hope when you least expect it.

I flew through this over 3 days. I really liked all the dog behavior shenanigans. Dogs act out because their needs aren't being met and this drove that point home A LOT. This felt like a lighter Romantic Suspense book with the stalker sub-plot which was interesting. This story is also very heavy on talking about suicide so be aware of that. A lot of the tension and misunderstandings could have been resolved QUICKLY if Drew didn't jump to conclusions or just talk to Caprise. Or if Theo had talked to his sister about Rufus before just throwing him. at her with no warning. Any dog, let alone a freaking Belgian Malinois, is A LOT of responsibility to just hand someone without warning. A retired, military dog with PTSD is an insane liability and a huge commitment.

What I didn't like was the rapid change from reluctant allies to lovers with little actual build up or chemistry between the 2. It was really jarring when they literally jumped into bed suddenly. That plus the insta-love brought my overall rating down.

I didn't realize this was the 3rd book in this "series" but you didn't need to read the other 2 to know what's happening.

🥃 ARC Review: Love in Training by Emilia Reed
Rating: 3.75/5 stars
Spice Level: 🌶️🌶️🌶️ (A slow-burning, high-heat journey from grief to passion.)
Reviewed by The Bourbon Sipping Bibliophile

Emilia Reed delivers a powerful, emotionally charged contemporary romance that proves love is rarely a straight line—it’s a grueling mountain climb. This story is a poignant exploration of betrayal, the weight of the past, and the unexpected ways we heal. I was captivated by how the author balanced intense themes like PTSD and grief with a romance that feels earned and mature.

🥃 The Pour
The story begins with a gut-punch: Caprice Phipps, a high-achieving journalist, is left at the altar by her long-term partner, Kyle. In his wake, he leaves behind an enigmatic note and—most complicating of all—a high-needs dog named Rufus.

Caprice is forced to navigate her shattered life while managing a dog she didn’t want, leading her to the one person who understands the man Kyle was: his estranged brother, Drew Forbes. As Drew helps her train Rufus, the two must confront their shared loss and a growing, undeniable attraction that threatens to upend their carefully constructed walls.

🥃 The High Notes
Emotional Resilience: Caprice is a fantastic protagonist—strong, gritty, and fiercely professional. I admired her determination to "out-climb" her grief.

The "Slow Burn" Chemistry: The tension between Caprice and Drew is palpable. Their transition from mutual skepticism to intense intimacy is masterfully handled.

Healing Through Connection: The role of Rufus as a catalyst for healing is beautiful. Seeing the dog—and the characters—become "calmer" through their shared work was deeply moving.

🥃 The Low Notes
The reason I am landing on a 3.75-star rating is primarily due to the heavy pacing of the first half. Because the story deals so honestly with abandonment and grief, the early chapters can feel quite somber, which might be a hurdle for readers expecting a more traditional "escape." Additionally, while the "protective" reasoning behind the wedding-day betrayal is explored, I occasionally felt that the ultimate resolution for Kyle’s character lacked the direct confrontation that eleven years of history deserved.

🌺 Overall
Love in Training is more than just a romance; it’s a story about the bravery it takes to be vulnerable again. It’s a great read for anyone who appreciates a story where the characters have to work for their happily-ever-after. I’ll be watching for the next installment in The Unmatched Series.

The Bourbon Sipping Bibliophile's Drink Pairing
🥃 The Forget-Me-Not Old Fashioned (Bittersweet & Bold)

I chose this drink because it mirrors the story's complexity—balancing the sharp sting of betrayal with the slow, floral sweetness of healing.

The Forget-Me-Not Old Fashioned Ingredients
Ingredients (in order for preparation):
Orange Bitters: 2 Dashes
Honey Syrup: 1 Barspoon
Crème de Violette: 1/4 oz
High-Proof Rye Whiskey: 2 oz
Garnish: Orange Twist and a fresh sprig of Mint

The Method (Training the Soul):
Combine the bitters, honey syrup, and Crème de Violette in a mixing glass.
Add the Rye Whiskey and fill with ice.
Stir slowly for 30 seconds—deliberate and focused, like training a dog.
Strain into a chilled rocks glass over a single large ice sphere.
Garnish: Express the orange oils over the glass and tuck in the mint. Savor the complexity as the flavors meld together.

Tropes: Mental Health Issues, Ex’s Brother, Stalking, Suspense, Enemies to Lovers, Dog as Character 😊
It isn’t often in a love story that character development, conflict and emotional healing supersede the romantic portion of the plot. In Love In Training by Emilia Reed, I was so engaged by the gripping fallout of Kyle’s actions that I would have been content if Caprice and Drew agreed to co-exist in the universe and went their separate ways! Journalist Caprice Phipps has loved and supported her brother’s best friend and HER fiancé, Kyle, since they started dating in high school. Kyle has an older brother (Drew Forbes who trained as a doctor but works as a dog trainer) and parents who expected Kyle to follow in their footsteps as doctors. Instead, Kyle joins the military doing what he loves, training dogs. Throughout his issues with his parents and his struggles with his mental health, Caprice has stood beside Kyle until he WALKS away from her, leaving her at the altar. Later, he leaves her a traumatized military dog in his will. Drew is determined to take care of his brother’s dog while Caprice is determined (albeit reluctantly) to do this one last thing for Kyle. This situation is a garbled mess; Drew wants to honor his brother but despises Caprice due to misunderstandings. Caprice is being stalked by person’s unknown because of one of her stories; Rufus the dog is too fragile emotionally to let her out of his sight; and she hates Drew, the one person who can help her with Rufus.
Conclusion:
I really enjoyed this emotionally rich story; Caprice was a strong heroine and her eventual relationship with Rufus was the better love story 😊. The story is told mostly from Caprice’s POV, but we also get to see Drew’s complex relationship with his parents and with Kyle. The romance between our two main characters was a stretch; readers were allowed to see a gradual thawing of their relationship as they sweetly cared for Rufus. Their sudden swerve into a love affair/romance was farfetched and seemed forced. For me, that was the ONLY misstep in an otherwise engaging story. This story is related to two other books, both starring Lydia and Anton whom readers got to meet as secondary characters…residual fall out continues to occur, and their situation sounds interesting: Love Unmatched and Love Mismatched. I will have to check these two books out!
Favorite Lines:
I could never have guessed ten years ago, after that first awkward date in high school, that this is where Kyle and I would wind up.
I may have had a complex history with Kyle, but Theo’s is longer and possibly more complicated.
My boss and I have had numerous conversations about safety over the last few years.
Finally, he clears his throat and stands, and I wait for him to explain why he chose to further ruin my already terrible day with his appearance.
My fantasies of not having to look into Drew Forbes’s chiseled face for forty- eight hours flit away like a traumatized butterfly.

I close my eyes and allow myself to also feel grateful. For the memory. For the boy who loved me with his whole heart, even if he didn’t know how to love himself.

This is a beautiful, yet heartbreaking book about overcoming grief and learning to forgive oneself (and the gift that is the dog). It did get off to a slow start. I was beginning to wonder if the romance existed when the MMC was virtually non-existent for the first third of the book. I know the author was trying to build both the relationship (or lack therefor) between Caprice and Rufus and also focus on her career and how those two struggled to overlap, but I found myself yearning for the Drew/Caprice/Rufus interactions that weren't coming fast enough.
The story really focuses on Caprice and her coping with losing her fiancé (who not only left her at the altar, but then committed suicide a year later). In his will, he leaves her his beloved dog, even though she is so far from a dog person it’s not funny. His semi-estranged brother shows up, hoping to take the dog home, as a last ditch effort to try and fix something between him and his brother.
We spend a good part of the book following Caprice on her journalistic pursuits, as well as her efforts to understand and bond with our doggy MC Rufus. Poor boy has PTSD and completely shuts down during thunder storms and wrecks the house when left alone.
There is a huge plot revolving around Caprice breaking a story about a dating app for married men and the threats receives for doing so. The romance almost feels like a side-plot for most of the book, but was still enjoyable and swoony once it finally joined the story.
Caprice and Drew work together training Rufus and eventually start to heal from the loss of their mutual person, Kyle, finding solace in each other.
Caprice was more developed than Drew, as even though this book was technically a dual POV, Drew only had about six or seven chapters and I wish there had been more of them, as I felt they didn't add a whole lot to the story, yet I wanted inside his head.
The book is really a heartfelt letter to those dealing with grief from loss of a loved one, and learning to forgive themselves for not being ‘enough’ even though it was never their fault in the first place.
A lot deeper than your usual romance novel, but definitely a recommended read.

Content warning at the start of the book lists:
Suicide, grief, stalking, assault, emotionally abusive parents.

A few other possible triggers I noted while reading:
Left at the altar, diarrhea, dog attack, anxiety, mention of past SA threats, living with someone with depression, PTSD episodes (Doggy-version)

explicit consensual sex scenes

Caprice is independent and doesn't have any issues with standing up for herself. I admire her for not backing down. She's jilted, and yet she's healing. She's doing the best she can while grieving the man she loved and the idea of a life they would have shared if he'd still been around. She's strong and determined and a fighter. This was definitely a heart clencher but was so beautifully written

I won this book through a Goodreads giveaway in exchange for an honest review. Thanks for choosing me.

This book is 5 laugh out loud stars worth of stars. I can't remember the last time I actually cackled as I read a book, and this one had me laughing so much I had tears pricking my eyes several times. It's also heartwrenching, unflinchingly authentic when it comes to grief and the destruction left behind in the wake of a loved one's death and heartfelt.

Rufus is 100% the star of the story. I. LOVE. HIM. He's adorably chaotic, and I'm all in for him. 🐶 ❤️Team Rufus! Always.

Caprice is independent and doesn't have any issues with standing up for herself. I admire her for not backing down. She's jilted, and yet she's healing. She's doing the best she can while grieving the man she loved and the idea of a life they would have shared if he'd still been around. She's strong and determined and a fighter.

Drew. Sir, I wanted to choke you. Repeatedly. And then I took a step (or ten) back and forced myself to cut you some slack. You are, after all, grieving your brother, and that can't be easy. After I did that, I came to the realization that you weren't just a class A jerk for no reason. You were in pain and doing the best you could in a sucky situation. Also, you earned points for being a dog whisperer. I set aside your pushy, jerky ways and saw you for the kind, grieving man you are. Once I saw that there was no turning back.

Lydia was a rockstar. Theo was the little brother every girl should have. ❤️⭐️

I'll be thinking of this one for a long, long time. Beautifully written, hilarious, and sentimental. Healing, heartwarming, and emotionally charged. 🥰 😂 ❤️ 🐶

I'd definitely recommend checking the trigger warnings, and yet even with them, it's definitely one of my top reads for 2025.

thank you emilia reed & netgalley for the arc of love in training, i enjoyed it! a solid solid solid 3.5 stars, would’ve given it a 4 with how much i enjoyed it but here are the reasons why i didn’t, sigh.

the book could’ve done better with a few more chapters. i feel like the progression of the story was doing great until it hit the last 25% of the book, not too sure if anyone else would agree. the relationship between caprice & drew was great, the whole “i hate you” to “i think we could be friends” thing was great, but i think their romance was too rushed.

the book was about grief and learning how to forgive yourself for the mistakes that you can never seek forgiveness for. the story really focuses on caprice and her methods of coping w loss of her former fiance, and having to deal w the gift he left for her, rufus (a wittle baby that i love). caprice’s character development was much more detailed than drew’s, even though this book is technically in both of their POVs, so i think i would love to learn more about what’s going on in drew’s head. like sir, how did you go from not liking caprice to finding her the most beautiful being on earth LOL OK

nevertheless, i would say this is a pretty well written book but it could’ve been much better! i’ll be sure to pick up the other two books in the series heh

First, I feel like it is important to mention that this book has heavy themes of suicide, grief, assault, and cheating. If you are not in a place to read about those things then this may not be the book for you.

I really did enjoy this book. While it is a romance, I found myself just totally drawn in by the relationship between Caprice and Rufus. It was truly so well written and was a beautiful representation of the trust that is built between a person and a dog. I was also pleased that the other included so much about mental health. I do wish that the relationship between Drew and Caprice felt a little less clunky. To me, it felt a little rushed and while I understand the desire to have conflict between the characters, I feel like it could have been done without jumping over some development in their relationship.

I also have to admit that at first I struggled a bit with the ex-fiancée’s brother part, but as it went on it did become a bit less awkward for me. Definitely one of those things that I think works better in books than it would in real life.

I would recommend this book for someone who likes rivals/enemies to lovers and loves reading about the best dogs.

Thank you NetGalley for an arc of this book in exchange for my honest review.
Okay, I was not expecting to fall in love with this book. I was looking for a fun palate cleanser book and was pleasantly surprised that this book was NOT that.
We have an opening that makes it seem like this might be a second choice romance, only for us to see that is not the case.
The author was able to take deeper topics like depression and suicide and put it into a heartfelt book that also had humor.
The FMC I felt was very fleshed out as someone who was in a slump with her life after the death of her ex-fiancé who left her at the alter a few years previous. She is then left the ex-fiancés dog in his will and she has to learn how to cope with a dog with severe ptsd from its time as a service dog in the military.
It brings out the parallels of the FMC having to figure out how to cope and support someone (or an animal in this case) as she felt that she failed her ex-fiancé in the past with his fight with ptsd and depression.
The MMC was actually the older brother of the ex-fiance which is kind of weird but also worked.
This was definitely a heart clencher but was so beautifully written

Please check your triggers before you start reading this book as it deals with heavy subjects in detail.

This book goes beyond a simple romance story to a tale of grief, loss, healing, understanding, and relearning to live after a loved one comits suicide. The author uses the cute doggie -Rufus is a military dog suffering from PTSD- to help the MCs -Caprice and Drew- learn about the difficulties that the damage have on animals and people, it is the way to make them understand in part what their loved one -Kyle- experienced and in a way take some of the self blame they are dealing with. And it is painful, sad, heartbreaking at times, but they work through it.

This book also deals with a journalist -Caprice- who is not only dealing with the guilt of the suicide, but trying to get a story, the dog training, and a stalker, so there is plenty of drama and suspense added to the story.

This is not a fluffy easy love , but one laddled with lots of pain, and grief.

Thanks Book Sirens for allowing me to read this book early! As a dog girl, I absolutely loved the dog storyline in Love In Training. It was fun, heartwarming, and clearly written with care. The premise itself is strong, and I genuinely enjoyed the overall reading experience. It’s a cute story with a lot of promise, and the foundation of the plot really works.

That said, the balance felt a tad off at times. The book leaned heavily into the dog training aspects, which were well developed, but at the expense of some of the bigger-picture elements. The threats in her life and the investigative angle tied to her writing career felt underexplored, and I found myself wanting more depth there to fully ground the story.

The enemies-to-lovers arc felt rushed. The transition happened so abruptly that it pulled me out of the realism. I wanted more tension, buildup, and emotional payoff to make the romance truly land. Overall, this was an enjoyable and cozy read with a great concept. A solid three stars for a sweet story that could really shine with more balance and expansion.

If you like your romance with a little sweat, a lot of sass, and enough tension to count as cardio, Love in Training by Emilia Reed absolutely delivers.

This book feels like the perfect mix of a rom-com and a workout montage. The characters are fun, stubborn, and just chaotic enough to keep things entertaining. The banter? Top tier. The chemistry? Let’s just say it’s doing more heavy lifting than leg day.

What makes this story so enjoyable is that it doesn’t take itself too seriously. Between the training, the awkward moments, and the slow realization that feelings are getting involved, the whole book feels playful and addictive. You keep telling yourself “just one more chapter”… and suddenly you’re halfway through the book.

Also, if you enjoy a little will-they-won’t-they tension mixed with determination, personal growth, and some genuinely funny moments, this book hits the sweet spot.

My favorite type of book is one that makes me feel a range of emotions while sharing a characters story.
This book delivers that range while staying interesting, I could not put it down.

Kyle’s story is heartbreaking while highlighting chronic depression. I cried for him and his experiences.
Then we have a sweet dog Rufus who needs Caprice because he is struggling from PTSD and grief. Caprice herself who is left shattered and feeling inadequate after losing Kyle. Then all through the story there is a mystery of who is harassing Caprice. Top it off with an enemies to lovers theme….yah, excellent book.

I enjoyed this unforgettable read and would recommend it. I would rate it 2-3 on spice.

Triggers would include loss of loved ones through suicide, talk of depression, and stalking, assault.

Thank you for this arc Hidden Gems and Emilia Reed, this review was voluntary.

This story has some heavy, triggering topics, including suicide, grief, PTSD, harassment, stalking, and violence. I appreciated seeing the different ways the loss of Kyle and the grief associated with this loss affected Caprice, Drew, and Kyle's dog, Rufus. While this is a romance, I was drawn more to the bond that developed between Caprice and Rufus as they learned to live together and deal with the loss of Kyle. The romance between Caprice and Drew wasn't explored until the last 20% of the book, which was ok with me. But I wish there had been a little more emotional connection and tension built up between them. Also, I thought the portrayal of Caprice's experience as a journalist and how she dealt with stalking and harassment was well written. Overall, I enjoyed this!.

This book is proof that we are unworthy of dogs 🥺 Rufus is such a good boy! But really, this was such a heartwrenching book. The fear and grief Caprice went through was so palpable. It was a tough journey watching her learn how to take care of Rufus while juggling her career, safety, emotions about her ex-fiancé AND his brother. She had so much growth through this book, as did Drew. I loved his arc with his parents!! So momentous. Caprice truly though was a very relatable, strong FMC other than not being a dog person 😂

I think my only qualm was the pacing at the end when they finally got together felt a little rushed but I still thoroughly enjoyed this.

Two years ago, Kyle left Reece at the altar. After a year Kyle was dead and willed his military dog, Rufus, to Reece who was not a dog person. Kyle's brother, Drew, trained dogs and really wanted Rufus himself. When Reece and Rufus have trouble adjusting, Drew helps her train him. Reece is a journalist, currently exposing a dating app for married males to find females. As she exposes those responsible, she is stalked. Rufus becomes a necessity in her life. This is a beautiful book about the importance of friendship between siblings and best friends. I loved how Reece's friend, a dog lover, supported her. There is a lot of information about military men and dogs as they try to adjust to normal life. I loved the way Drew worked with Rufus and supported Reece. Great book!

Two years ago, the journalist Caprice was left at the altar with a broken heart. After his death, the man that broke her heart left her his military retired dog. The twist, Caprice is not a pet person. On top of that, Drew, the brother of her ex not only wants the dog for himself but blames Caprice for his brother’s death.
Dealing with a stalker, a dog that suffers from PTSD, the annoying brother and chasing a new lead on a old story, Caprice doesn’t have it easy. But keeping Rufus, the only connection she has left from the man she loved for so long, it seems the only choice.
I am enjoyed the story because it has the romance feel, enemies to lovers trope, suspense and heartbreaking moments.

A heartfelt mix of romance, suspense, and redemption, this story follows journalist Caprice Phipps, who inherits Rufus, her late fiancé’s retired military dog, despite not being a pet person. Between a stalker, a PTSD-stricken canine, and Drew Forbes—the infuriating brother who blames her for his sibling’s death—Caprice’s life spirals into chaos. Yet as she and Drew clash and reluctantly work together, their simmering tension evolves into an enemies-to-lovers journey filled with raw emotion, heartbreak, and hope. With engaging characters, gripping twists, and Rufus as the unlikely bridge between past pain and future love, this novel delivers a powerful, memorable read.

This romance centers around a military service dog who needs rehoming after his owner’s death, and his connection with the main female character. The beginning can be a bit confusing, as it takes time to understand the relationships and backstory. It definitely requires some patience to get fully immersed in the plot.

Once you settle in, however, the story blossoms into a truly lovely tale about love, second chances, and the effort people make to connect with one another. The characters are relatable, and the dogs add a heartfelt touch to the story. Overall, it’s a sweet and engaging read — just be prepared to invest a little time at the start to fully appreciate it.

Two vears ago, Kyle left Caprice at the altar. A year later Kyle committed suicide and willed his military dog, Rufus, to Caprice who is not a dog person at all. Kyle's brother, Drew, trains dogs and really wanted Rufus for himself. When Caprice and Rufus have trouble adjusting, Drew sees his chance and helps her train him.

Caprice is a journalist, currently exposing a dating app for married men to find women. As she exposes those responsible, she is putting herself in more danger and Rufus becomes a necessity in her life.

This is a beautiful book about second chances and the cute dog doesn't hurt either.

I finished this book and I loved it so much. Caprice was such a strong and relatable character, and I really felt her grief and struggle after losing Kyle. Rufus, the dog, stole the show. Drew was sweet, protective, and quietly strong, and I loved seeing him and Caprice slowly heal together. The book handled grief, mental health, and forgiveness beautifully, with both heartbreaking and tender moments. The emotional impact and depth of the story really made it true beautiful. Thank you so much to the author and Netgalley for giving me the opportunity to read the book in advance, I received this for free and I'm leaving a honest review

KYLE, CAPRICE, RUFUS, AND DREW

I received this book for free and am giving my honest and voluntary review.

I loved this book as it delves into depression and some of the things that people do to combat it, even taking their lives, and the effect it has on those left behind, including their four-legged companions. I loved the way Caprice tried to deal with Kyle’s suicide and how his brother, Drew, did not know what was going on and made judgement calls that affected him and Caprice. The addition of people of color against people of affluence also brought the story out more. Very eye opening and well-written. Accolades to Ms. Reed.

Wonderful story! The main characters were engaging and likable. They helped you connect to the story, and you felt the full range of their emotions as you read their story. Caprice and Drew's anger at Kyle was an elephant in the room the whole story; that tension between them kept me both angry with them and at them, yet rooting for them and their relationship too. Caprice and Drew had every reason to give up on each other, but Rufus knew they were better together than they were apart from each other. This was my first read by this author, and I'm looking forward to reading some of her other stories.

4.75 🌟 This book was REAL. Please read content warnings. The book tackles themes like depression, the aftermath of suicide, and the complex process of moving on.

Journalist Caprice Phipps, who is struggling with her career and a surprise inheritance, and dog trainer Drew Forbes, who is protective of his late brother's legacy, feels raw and authentic. Her new dog, Rufus, is more than just a pet—he is a central character and a symbol of the "broken hearts" mentioned in the title. The story is realistic, with relatable characters who navigate difficult family dynamics. You will laugh, you will cry, and you will cheer for Caprice and Drew.

More than a cute enemies-to-lovers story here. This took on some heavy subjects for Caprice and Drew. You get caught up in pain, loss, regret, assumptions; and so much more. At various points with this, I was either irritated with them both or cheering for them both. But who couldn't love Rufus in it al!

This was a long and tough read. And an emotional one. Drew and Caprice go through it, but get there.

I loved this book for the emotions that were in the book, but most importantly DOG!!! I don't get to read too many books that have dogs in them so this was a nice treat especially when you have emotional connection with the characters that were very well written. It also was very funny at times and I was hooked from the beginning. I recommend this book if you like romances, but especially if you like dogs!.
