Known for her dark humor and stinging prose, M.E. Evans often shares personal stories of her complicated family, bad travel, and her ongoing struggle with anxiety and depression. Her blog (me-evans.com) is full of candid and often funny life moments.
I read this book as an ARC and absolutely loved it. Not only was the book wonderful, but the author is as well. I grew up with shows like Vampire Diaries being my obsession and books like Twilight being my comfort series that I always return to. The feeling I had while reading this book gave me those same comfort feelings. I feel like I am terrible with words, but going to try to give this book the hype it deserves. This book has those paranormal romance aspects to it, but there is so much more to it. Our main character, Danny, WHO IS AN ACTUAL ADULT, is a single mom who struggles with finding herself after being in a terrible marriage and a mom of two kiddos. M.E. Evans PERFECTLY showcases the guilt moms feel when we try to do things for ourselves or try to understand who we are as we age. The mom guilt that we all feel was so relatable in this book. I felt so connected to Danny the entire book. The relationship and unbreakable love of a mother was written so beautifully. And the relationship she has with her own sister. 🥲🥲🥲🥲 There is some spice in this book, and a very hot vampire lover. 🥵😅🖤 I felt like I was going on a journey with Danny to find her inner power and place as a woman who has lost herself in being a mom/wife. Yes there is romance and drama in it, but I really just loved the woman empowerment in it. I can not wait to see the direction M.E. Evans goes with for book 2!
*Thanks to Tess Irondale Narration for the gifted audiobook.
The narration was perfectly done I like all the characterizations and it made the story more enjoyable.
This book is perfect for those who are new to the fantasy genre and want to try it for the first time. The book has some fantasy aspects but are very light and mostly play on the background of the story.
I like the writing style of this author the story fluid easily and was entertaining. I could identify with many of the things that Danny was going through and made it easy for me sympathize with her. I love the lil mystery and the plot twist of the story when she discovers that her new love interests was a vampire.
What I felt that was very convenient was the surge of her new powers you’re telling me that this person is more than 30 and not once she felt anything before. And how out of nowhere she knows how to use a firearm and a sword like wtf I thought she was a stay at home mom. Not saying that a staying at home mom can’t do this but it was not mentioned once at the beginning of the story that she had this skills.
I would have like for the story to be more fleshed out specifically after the second half. Because out of nowhere a villain comes into the picture that needs to be deal with. Like I was dealing with a divorce but now I have to deal with an immortal that is out for revenge like what talk about a 180.

If you loved the vampire diaries but want your FMC's a little bit older, then check this one out. Danny, the main character, is a mom in her 30s in an unhappy marriage. I related so much to the pressures of motherhood and the feelings that come with being a stay at home mom. I enjoyed reading her journey of rediscovering herself after divorce and coming into her own. She meets a mysterious neighbor who happens to be vampire and discovers more about immortal beings and magic. I also really loved seeing the sisterly bond between Danny and Jess. This is a paranormal romance, but it feels so much deeper than that. It's character driven, and the author wrote amazing characters that you can easily connect to. This does end on a bit of a cliffhanger, and I'll definitely be picking up book 2.
Have you been looking for a romance book based on a woman in her 30's, with vampires, mysterious death, inclusivity, relatable, drama, secrets. Then let's me tell you about House of Secrets by M.E Evans.
You follow Danny who lives a pretty normal, busy, chaotic, maybe a little bland life for her, mom guilt fueling her days, her marriage failing, her parents being non existent, her trauma over her father's death.. yet, everything changes when she sees Andras. Her next door and hot neighbor. She find herselfs thinking about him attracted to him, pulled to him like a magnet. Yet, she has to work through her marriage and find who she truly is in her life with the help of her sister. Not to mention that the secrets about her unfold and she has to figure out the true identity of her lineage.
Without spoiling too much I will say I enjoyed this book, the familiarity of Danny's life as a mom and trying to figure out who she is and care for those you love pull you into this book.
I expected ghosts or something with a name like House of secrets, but the fact that is was vampires with the vibes of a tormented man who has to battle his hunger, his need to feed all the time, fight his past that haunts him now and Danny. I was instantly excited and ready to live in this book.
Not to mention that Andras knows a little about Rhysand and has knowledge as an editor.
If you're looking for something different, vampires, secrets and unknown powers, relatable, a mom of two in her thirties then this is it.

The Character ARC of Danny is truly wonderful. From being a people pleaser to standing up for herself and fighting her battles along with others she came a long way. The sister bond between Danielle and Jess is beautiful to Read.
Two beautiful little girls Ria & Liv are just pure bundles of joy.
Andras is an enigmatic character, reading him gave me Klaus + Stephen vibes (Love of Klaus + Past like Stephen). Their chemistry is palpable from their first meet cute.
Last 30% of book truly blew my mind. Danny stood out the most to me. Also that ending is 👌👌
I am eagerly Waiting to read the next book in the series.

Thank You Tales & Teacups PR for the ARC. This is my honest review.
M.E. Evans crafts a compelling story about the struggles of adulthood and motherhood, interwoven with romance and intrigue ❤️
The FMC, who I found deeply relatable, faces the challenges of life head-on while discovering her mysterious neighbor holds more than just secrets. What truly stood out to me was how the author created a female main character who is strong, brave, and resilient—a modern-day warrior. I couldn’t help but empathize with her 🥰
The male lead is equally captivating, shrouded in mystery and allure, leaving you wanting to know more about him with each chapter.
Tropes: ☑️ Vampires and Magic ☑️ Adult FMC ☑️ Women empowerment ☑️ Spice 🌶️🌶️🌶️ ☑️ Ranking 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟
This was a touching debut for me, and I’m definitely looking forward to seeing what Evans writes next!
Loved it. This fulfilled so many unfulfilled Twilight wishes, and I LOVE that the FMC has a c-section scar, it makes her so relatable for me, and makes me feel a bit empowered by it.
Plus I’m obsessed with Andras! The cliffhanger is absolute torture, how on earth am I meant to wait a year for the next part! This will definitely get a reread next year ready for the next instalment!
I LOVED THIS!!! Honestly this can't be a debut author?!
Now I'm going to be straight up and say, that I hate reading books where the FMC has kids 🫣 as a mum myself it's something I stay FAR away from. I want to disassociate when I'm reading and have my books take me away from my day-to-day life, ya know?
That aside, I took a chance on this because it sounded so good. And BOY AM I GLAD!
Danny the FMC was so relatable holy shit. And I don't think you have to be a parent to relate to her or her relationship struggles. She is fierce and strong underneath the self doubt and anxiety which I felt on a personal level and I just wanted her to succeed and thrive so badly!
I loved the characters and especially Jess her sister who is just the most amazing support in her life.
The story had depth, mystery and romance. And I loved the lil nod to "Stray Kids" 😆👏
If you like a book where the FMC finds herself and doesn't need no man(or vampire) to come and save her. Who is a 30+ year old mum of 2 girls and LOVES them dearly but still tries to have a life of her own. Plus - fun side characters, magic, and a lil spice - this is the book for you!
I don't think i can wait till 2025 for the next book 😭😭😭
I neeeeed the next book in my greedy hands rn please!
Vampire book but the FMC is a grown up!!! My god that felt refreshing! Danny is a mom in a struggling marriage with some annoying pta drama when a super hot mysterious neighbor moves in bringing in a world Danny didn’t know existed. Hot, funny and weirdly very relatable.
In my teens I was obsessed with Twilight and this book definitely gave me the same vibes, but for adults and without the sparkles! Kinda like a Practical Magic meets Twilight.
It's about Danny, a single mom trying to find herself again after being neglected in her marriage for so many years.
One day she meets her intriguing and extremly handsome new neighbor Andras, who is actually a vampire and helps her find herself again.
I loved the character developement and her humor. I totally related to her as a mom but also to her awkwardness and brutal honesty.
One, to me, surprising way in which I also related, was the being mixed part and the way it represented. Cause we often get forgotten and it's always one side or the other. I don't think people realize It's different when you're mixed and sometimes it's difficult to find where you fit in. The pull from two sides... Danny mentions quite often her british side and her persian side and how they compare and how she was brought up, it doesnt seem a big thing but I think its a big part of who Danny is and as a mixed person I really loved reading it! I really loved the acknowledgement and small nod to say I see you.
The side charecters where also very well done. I adored Jes and the sister bond they shared. And I really really really wanted to punch Steven in the face!
The vampire and witches aspect was also very nice and added mystery and action to the story. It's a very nice, cozy spooky season read and I can't wait for book 2!
I probably do have a different notion of cozy than some people, so be sure to check the tw as there could be some triggers.
PTA Soccer Mom meets Vampire Diaries The story kept me entertained from the beginning and I enjoyed reading a PNR with adult characters. There is real life failing marriage emotions, lots of mystery and twists, danger, and a seductive vampire.
This is a 🌶️🌶️ read and comes with a language warning
House of Secrets is a fantasy debut novel from writer ME Evans and the first book in The Bloodborne Trilogy. The book is a genre-bending dark fantasy featuring vampires, magic, and forbidden romance woven into a tale about the struggles of motherhood and married life. The author’s writing style is very vivid and immersive, making everything, down to the smallest environmental detail, very tangible. The story follows Daniele (Danny) Ténèbres, a 35-year-old woman with an emotionally abusive, inattentive husband, who meets a new mysterious stranger, Andras, in the neighborhood. As her marriage falls apart, she becomes increasingly obsessed with her new neighbor and learns some shocking truths about him, just as her own life becomes threatened. The book includes several popular tropes, including instalove, mysterious stranger, friends to lovers, forced proximity, and twisted love triangles! The story is fast-paced, unpredictable, and easy to follow, making for a read that can easily be devoured in one sitting!
The characters in the story are complex, mostly morally grey, and very compelling. Danny’s personal growth is very evident in the story, beginning as a passive people pleaser, in both her marriage and friendships, and then transforming into a fierce, outspoken woman ready to fight her battles. She’s a very relatable character, and her motherhood struggles and feelings of loss of self will resonate with many readers and make her easy to empathize with. Her interactions with the other “mean girl” PTA women are quite hilarious, as she’s seen as the outcast, especially with her family’s sordid past, and she becomes increasingly vocally resistant to their demands and gossip, often putting them in their place without caring about the consequences.
On the contrary, the relationship between Danny and her sister Jess is the epitome of a strong and healthy sisterly bond. They have an abundance of heartfelt dialogue in the story, keep few secrets from each other, and constantly have each other’s backs. The mysterious and brutal murder of their father is mentioned several times in the book, having greatly affected both sisters as teenagers, and there’s a strong sense that the truth behind this mystery and other family secrets will be revealed in book 2. Andras is an enigmatic, morally grey character, shrouded in mystery, who becomes more likeable as more of his heartbreaking vampire backstory is revealed. The chemistry between Danny and Andras is palpable from their first encounter, giving vibes of a “Twilight for Adults” narrative. It should be noted that this isn’t a closed book romance story—spicy book lovers will appreciate the steamy romance scenes that are well executed and don’t overwhelm the main storyline.
The story quickens in pace and slowly spins towards a paranormal narrative in the second half. When Andras unintentionally brings great danger to Danny and the welfare of her family, she acknowledges that she can't be his lover and also a mother of young children since he is a magnet for perpetual trouble. Even still, readers will have to suspend their disbelief at some of the impulsive, nonsensical decision-making Danny makes thereafter, especially when she chooses to travel to the cabin where a dangerous vampire showdown between Andras and his ex-lover is set to unfold. Another plot point that is a bit far-fetched is how Danny and Andras engage in indulgent sexual activity at the cabin, both well aware of the fact that an imminent threat is expected at any moment—but they don’t seem the least bit concerned.
Despite some of these implausible plot points, the story remains very entertaining and action-packed, with a lot of engrossing dialogue. The battle that ensues also features shocking revelations and some violent, gory scenes that will please horror fans. Soon after, the story abruptly ends in a twisty cliffhanger hinting of big changes coming for Danny and her sister, and readers will want to read the sequel right away. Unfortunately, no date has been set for its release, and readers may require a reread when the sequel comes out to refresh the storyline and excitement.
In summary, this is a highly addictive dark fantasy that will keep readers engaged from beginning to end. Popular vampire romance novels, in the vein of Twilight and The Vampire Diaries, often involve young female protagonists—so this book, with its older characters, is a refreshing take on this sub-genre and will resonate with a wider audience, especially mothers of young children. Narrator Tess Irondale delivers an exciting and compelling performance, inflecting an impressive vocal range to depict the character voices and the wide variety of scenes. If you enjoy stories with vampires, magic, family drama, steamy romance, and relatable characters, then you’ll love this book. The book is a great achievement for ME Evans, and the series has great storyline potential. Let’s hope we won’t have to wait too long for the sequel!
🎤Narrator Performance🎤 (5⭐️)
Narrator Tess Irondale does a spectacular job narrating this book. Irondale uses a smooth and engaging tone to authentically portray 35-year-old Danny, infusing an impressive range of emotions and vocal range to portray the character in a wide variety of scenes. Irondale also provides distinct voices for the broad cast of characters, and her portrayal of the enigmatic British-sounding Andras is performed with a genuine-sounding accent, an abundance of swagger, and an air of mystery that perfectly captures the character's persona. Irondale’s delivery of the dialogue is extremely captivating and well executed, especially the dangerously flirtatious conversations between Danny and Andras, where the chemistry is incredibly intense, and also the emotional scenes between the two sisters that come across as heartfelt. The narration is also paced perfectly, allowing listeners to fully relish in the growing chemistry and bond between Danny and Andras.
Irondale demonstrates her mastery of talent by increasing the pacing and emotional intensity during the climactic showdown scenes between the vampires, making for a very entertaining and unstoppable listening experience! With such an excellent performance, the audiobook is the recommended format for enjoying this first book in an exciting new series! With no release date for book 2 yet announced, it’s definitely one that you’ll want to listen to again as a refresh before the anticipated sequel!
4.5 stars for the writing. Check the highlights for examples.
4 stars for story overall:
Mood readers: This story is about a 35 yr old woman with a terrible (emotionally) husband and two adorable young daughters. The character development of the FMC is spot-on for thoughts and feelings associated with the impossible task of raising children (essentially by yourself) - the doubts, the insecurities, the love, the loss of self. She also faces the difficult task of ending her marriage to a man who clearly does not want to be a husband and barely parents his children. The FMC also has a traumatic past - she and her sister, as teenagers, found their Persian father literally torn to pieces (alert) and their snobby British mother arrested for his murder. Their mom was never charged due to lack of evidence, but that did not stop the neighborhood mean girls (later PTA moms) from bullying the family.
After all this trauma, the FMC just wants a nice, quiet life - and so she marries her nice, quiet boyfriend and they have two daughters... but the husband becomes an obsessed, patronizing workaholic (she takes care of both kids full-time, and paints on commission for pet portraits)..
While she's musing on her failing marriage and doubting her parenting skills, she sees a gorgeous man walking with beautiful dates (male and female) through the neighborhood every so often. She is fascinated by this mysterious man with his beautiful companions (never the same one twice), especially because his existence is so at odds with hers.
And here is where the story slowly spins towards the paranormal, definitely setting the stage for a series because despite the shocking discoveries, gore and violence towards the end, there are many questions purposefully left open. (Nothing bad happens to the kids, no worries) So this book reads somewhat like a prequel... the beginning of something bigger... I like that a mom is the heroine (for a change!) since I too am a mom. Kudos for that! No matter what's happening to her (sexy times) or around her (vicious attacks by... no spoilers), her kids are never far from her thoughts (keeping it real!)
So the writing was beautiful and thoughtful, the FMC, her ex-husband, daughters and sister were well-developed, but the MMC was maybe too perfect- gorgeous, sexy, experienced, an ex-mercenary turned reader/editor, a great lover, powerful defender... of course, he brings great danger into her life unintentionally, and she realizes that she can't be his lover and a mother of two young children because he is a magnet for preternatural trouble. However, it is more than hinted that some big changes are coming, and her familial line may not be as ordinary as they thought...

"Are you…dramatizing your own brand of evil?...You don’t have to bloody exaggerate it. You are actually a fucking demon from hell, you narcissistic shitbag.” (p.237)
No wonder Andras is drawn to Danny–She is brilliant
Danny’s marriage is failing, and she is struggling with feeling as though she’s lost her identity in motherhood. Her new neighbor is a welcome distraction, always escorting someone beautiful when Danny sees him. Something about him is different, and the intense way he looks at her is all-consuming, But there is danger lurking, and Danny will have to fight to protect herself and her children.
Danny is every woman who wants to be the best mom but mourns the woman she used to be. She is the most relatable character I have ever read. I was immediately drawn into the story because of her–she’s fantastic. I absolutely love how as she begins to reclaim her identity, she doesn’t take shit from anybody! Andras’s fervent intensity is alluring, and I am excited to see where the trilogy takes them.
House of Secrets is M.E. Evans’ first fiction novel, but you’d never know it. She writes like she was born for it. I can’t wait for the next book to come out!
I LOVED THIS!!! Honestly this can't be a debut author?!

I don't think i can wait till 2025 for the next book 😭😭😭
I did not realize I needed this book when I started it, but I love that the FMC is an adult dealing with adulting issues. This book made me feel all the feels. I was not expecting to cry so much or to relate so much with a character. Danny is dealing with real life things like trying to be a perfect parent while dealing with a failing marriage while still trying to do everything right for her family and kids. Plus dealing with the judgement of the other moms in her community. Never mind her childhood trauma of her father being murdered. The last thing she needs is to be caught up in a vampire feud. I wish that Goodreads would allow half star ratings, because this was so close to being a five star read for me, but I just wanted more of Andras. I felt he could have used more development. I just know that the rest of this trilogy is going to be amazing though, and I cannot wait for book two!
This book gets 4.5 stars from me! (Goodreads, when can we get the half star feature?!) and 3 out of 5 for spice. There’s definitely some spicy scenes and a slow burn to make you work for it 😏
The FMC, Danny, is a kickass mom, sister and artist. I love that there was so much buildup about where she came from the person she’d become, even in her adult years. It not only made you relate to Danny so much more, but really set up the major twists that started coming in throughout the second half of this book.
Other notes: - if you have a sister you love, you’ll love reading about Danny’s relationship with her sister, Jess - the MMC is an editor who has also read fairy smut (say less) - if you’ve ever wanted been pissed off by another parent on the PTA or a mean girl at school, just you wait - oh and did I mention witches and vampires? No? You’ll have to read to know more 😊
This was great! It reminded me of (a grown-up version of) The Vampire Diaries, and I appreciated the little nods to popular vampire and fae romance.
I found Danny to be mature and relatable, and I enjoyed the PTA drama and loved how strong her relationship with her sister is.
I wanted a little more from the romance, but given this is Book 1 of a trilogy (and Danny's current situation), I suspect this will be further developed in future books.
The narration was well done, but there were a few moments where the rhythm felt a little off.
Overall, I really enjoyed this and I will definitely be reading the rest of the series.
I received an audio review copy for free (I paid for the eBook), and I am leaving this review voluntarily. All opinions are my own.
Modern day Vampire Love story, amid a crumbling marriage and life as a Mom, Danny meets Andras, the Vampire next door. This paranormal romance is layered with a lot of accurately portrayed modern day struggles of being a wife and mom and losing yourself to your marriage and motherhood. As Danny navigates her new reality after the realization that her marriage is over, in comes her sexy, mysterious vampire neighbor. I enjoyed this book, Andras was kind, mysterious and considerate. Danny is drawn to him and I loved their blooming relationship. Tess does a fantastic job voicing all the characters. I really look forward to the more from M. E. Evans, also, I absolute adored this cover, it sits happily on my shelf.
It took some time to get used to the narration, but once I did it became so enjoyable. I agreed with characters' decisions and actions while being captivated by their aesthetic. Art related job/hobby is often a sign of a beatiful book for me and this one was no exception. The supernatural elements were visely combined with troubles and joys of family, motherhood, and everyday social life, building relatable yet in the same time ethereally magical experience.
Will definitely read the next book when it comes out! It promises a lot more of interesting worldbuilding information I can't wait to learn.
Really enjoyed this story and especially all of the parenting and marital topics. I was just hooked from the start and could relate to the ideas that were explored about parenting, and trying to hang on to your own individuality, and trying to figure out how to raise a good, healthy, human being. Also loved the mystery, foreshadowing, and action scenes. Great setup and teasing of a much bigger world and very interested to see where the story goes, and to see more of the lore of this world.
I didn't know I needed this book until it was on my kindle and I was already halfway through before I felt like I had blinked. I couldn't put this book down. The vibes were impeccable, the romance was breath taking, and the world building was top notch. I loved this book and will be keeping M.E. Evans on my radar!.
I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.
I stayed up all night starting and finishing this book. It’s that good! I’ve always been a sucker for anything with vampires and this book is such an entertaining read.
You have romance, mystery, action. A very relatable in her 30’s FMC. Beautiful writing. If you’ve thought about getting this book. DO IT!! You won’t regret it.
As a lover of all things Fae.. ( my daughter’s middle name is Fae) and a bit of spice.. u add some kpop references ( stray kids woo!) I’m SOLD.. now I just have to sit and wait for the next one …..
I wish it didn’t have swear words. I am a fan of the author. She is cool, empathic, intelligent and relatable. While I think the book is good I also think she could raise the bar even higher for herself because she is capable of it.
3.5⭐️, 🌶️- House of Secrets follows Danny, a mother of two little girls who is in an unhappy marriage. While navigating therapy and a divorce, she meets her new neighbor, Andras who is incredibly handsome and they hit it off right away. This book was a quick read for me and was mostly fast-paced. I felt like I connected with Danny and appreciated a strong FMC who isn’t afraid to ask questions and push back! This is the perfect read for fall and my favorite part was the mindweaving!
