I've been in a bit weird reading mood and not finding anything that really grips me, so that might've influenced my enjoyment of this book. I was hoping urban fantasy was the genre I was in the mood for and that this book would help pull me out of this weird reading mood, but sadly this book failed to full pull me in. Having said that, I do think it's a decent read. It has many elements in you find in most urban fantasy books and it's a quick and relatively fast paced read. All in all it wasn't a bad book, but not a really good one either, if that makes sense?

Magic Born follows the story of Morgan Drake, who has a bit of an unusual job. She goes through estate sales and the like and finds magical objects. Which she then buys and sells in the magical community to the vampire she works for or other interested parties. I liked the set-up of the book and Morgan's unlikely job and how it was a bit of a gray area of what she did with bring magical objects in the hands of those who couldn't create or use magic. I wouldn't have minded reading more about it. But this is only the background and everything changed when she brings a dragon statue home to her boss.

Morgan lives in the city of Realm's gate, a magical city hiding in plain sight. I never fully understood how that worked and the bits we get to hear about it weren't enough for me to fully bring it alive. Like how did they get food and supplies and how did no one realize there was a huge city hiding there as that must be a big area of space the humans are missing? But the focus is more on the story than the world building. And I did like the overall idea of paranormal hiding in magical cities.

The story started off pretty good, with us getting a feel of Morgan's job and her situation. Then the mystery starts and I was curious how that would get resolved. But then the book sort of lost my attention and I never fully got into the story. The way things get resolved felt a bit anticlimactic and sudden and there are still a lot of lose ends, but I am figuring that will be resolved in later books. In that regard it very much feels like the set-up for the rest of the series.

The mystery wans't as good as I had hoped, but then again I shouldn't expect the mystery in a fantasy read to be as good as in a mystery or suspense book. There was no way to predict who was behind it before it got revealed. And the motivation behind it is still unclear. Although there was a bit of an interesting development regarding the mystery and the length they went to, to pull this off.

Morgan was an okay enough main character. I liked how she did what was necessary to clear her name, but also worried about her situation and when she had a moment to think grieved for what she lost. Then in other moments I did not get her at all, like how she wanted to rush in some situation without a plan and then the next moment berating others because they didn't have a plan. I did like how she cared about Alex and helping him. I just never fully warmed up to her or felt like I really got to know her. It's mostly a story driven book with the characters and world building taking second place.

There is a hint of a possible romance, but too be honest the whole situation surrounding the love interest James made me uncomfortable. He violates her privacy and trust in a pretty bad way and she forgives him pretty quickly after he apologizes. I had a hard time feeling the romance, knowing that happened and the character brushed it aside so easily which just felt off.

I also thought it felt a bit of how James was all super careful and had reasons for not doing things and then gets in the middle of things and risk it all to help Morgan, but he also didn't really seem to care about her yet, so I didn't really get why he did those things. And the oracle information didn't really seem much help in the big scheme of things.

There are some side characters who are okay enough. From all of them I probably liked the vampire Alec the most with how he stuck with Morgan and helped her even tough he hardly knew her. I am not sure how she suddenly gained a friend at the end as it felt a bit weird how that character was suddenly willing to put her life on the line for the main character. Although I think they have some sort of past, that never fully got explained and I didn't really notice that in their interactions. And the main character was a bit rude to her at times even with the side character helping her.

And multiple characters asked the main character if she trusted them and I always feel that asking that question is so unrealistic. It's something you only hear in books and movies. And there were multiple situations were instead of just explaining things quickly they said to trust them and they had a plan, but they had enough time to quickly explain things instead of talking about trusting them. It just felt like an excuse not to reveal too much or try and keep a level of surprise, which just felt fabricated this way.

The world building is pretty limited and we only learn a few things like lot of paranormal creatures exits and before I fully got the hang of the world we got information and reveals, that lacked impact because I didn't feel how rare or unusual that was. There is something interesting about the main character powers that gets mentioned and I was kinda curious how that tied into the mystery plot line, but we don't find out all the details in this book.

To summarize: Magic Born is a typical urban fantasy read with a few unique touches, which will work in a pinch if that's what you're in the mood for. Sadly I've been in a weird reading mood and this book failed to pull me out of it. I liked the set-up, but the book failed to hold my interest and in the end it just felt flat. It is not a bad book, but I just wasn't feeling it. It's a pretty fast paced and story driven book, but I felt the character development and world building fell a bit to the side with the strong focus on the story. The main character was an okay enough character, although I never fully warmed up to her. The romance fell flat for me as I kept being bothered by a situation that happened between them earlier in which he violated her privacy in a pretty bad way and then almost jokingly shoved that fact in her face. I also was a bit annoyed how people kept insisting the main character trusted them instead of just explaining what they knew or what their plan was. The world building is pretty limited, but I did like the idea of magical cities. Magic Born is a decent set-up of this new series and if you're in the mood for an urban fantasy book you might enjoy this one. Sadly it just fully work for me.

This was a very fast read. Very fast paced and a lot happening all the time. I feel like I spent the entire book in an anxious state. There really wasn’t much world building and hardly any backstory and mentions of the past rarely were explained. I’m not sure if this is going to be explained in later books but here was really so little information about what is going on and why it’s going on I felt really lost.

I really don’t feel we know our characters at all. We get to know the vampire (was his name Alex?) the most he gives us a background story but I really feel like he is a secondary character and not even really relevant. He chimes into conversations here and there but he’s really background. As for the FMC we barely have any information on, we meet her BFF during a super brief scene at the start of the book but hear nothing on her afterwards. She has beef with this siren we meet at the front of the book but no real explanation as to why and then at the end it turns out they were friends at one point? Not really sure what happened there it never explained why they had a falling out just a recollection that it was a dumb reason.

Honestly there is just way to many loose ends here and no explanations and the world building is practically non existent.

Great book!

I really enjoyed reading this book. It was fun and had non stop action. I loved the characters and they were interesting and well developed. I look forward to reading the next book in this series.

This was a quick and surprisingly enjoyable read. I hadn't heard of this author or series so wasn't really sure what to expect but it was actually quite an enjoyable storyline and I really liked the main character and am interested to learn more about her and her abilities as the series moves on. My only real complaint is that the while this was a quick read, at the time the actual progress through the story was frustratingly slow and I would have liked to be a little more to be resolved in book 1 before moving to book 2.

That being said, I did enjoy the read and will be definitely moving to book 2

Spiraling out of control

The narrative never settled in to a direction. The world seemed more happenstance and ‘oooh, that would be neat’ than a well-conceived, purposeful construct. So many people introduced who disappear after their scene without substantially adding to the plot or the world.

Clumsy plotting paired with a lack of understanding for motivation.

There are much better books and series.

The mage, Morgan Drake, wandered through the estate sale, looking for magical objects that needed to be removed from human ownership. She purchased these items and sold them to the shops in Realm’s Gate, a magical community hidden from humans. She was about to give up on this one when her powers tugged her toward the attic. She found a pouch holding a ceramic dragon sculpture hanging on a wall. She paid the woman downstairs a dollar for it and headed out. If she took it to her vampire gangster boss, Jimmy, she would probably earn enough to take the rest of the night off! Not only did she get far more money for it than she expected, but Jimmy asked her to take his new vampire member, Alec, on a date to show him the town and to celebrate her birthday. And Jimmy, who sent roses every year for her birthday, even gave her the money for their date!

Morgan took Alex to a club, where he got into trouble immediately by falling under a siren’s spell. No sooner did she rescue him than a loud boom sounded and the ceiling shook and lights swayed. Outside, flames were shooting across the sky! And suddenly Morgan realized where it was coming from – the area of Jimmy’s laundromat headquarters! She and Alec drove through the heavy smoke and looked inside the damaged building for Jimmy. Marco, his second in command, entered the room and bared his fangs, ready to attack her. He had seen video showing Morgan staking Jimmy and Marco was ready to kill her! But Alec told him Morgan had been with him the entire night at the club! She didn’t do it. She cared for Jimmy and the other vampires like family. So Marco told her to run and find proof before the Hunters and police arrested her. He told her the statue had held a dragon which was now destroying everything. Would she be able to escape the city? Would she be able to track down the real killer? And where had the dragon gone?

This was a well written story that I thoroughly enjoyed. It immediately caught up the reader’s emotions seeing the close friendship between Morgan and Jimmy. It was actually painful to know that he was murdered. And with no time to grieve, Morgan had to run to avoid capture as the evidence pointed to her as the murderer! Don’t miss out on this exciting book. It’s captivating and the fast pace will keep you on the edge of your seat!

It was a fast paced book, and this was the main thing troubling this book since the events happen so fast that you don't believe why the people helping the protagonist are helping her in the first place. The author never introduces Morgan, she is just a mage(this is pretty cool), it is her birthday, she works finding rare magical items and she finds a Dragon statue so she takes it to her boss/really good friend-who's a mafia boss this end up killing him and blaming he in th process. She meets Alec-vampire that works for her friend- and suddenly he wants to help because he knows she is innocent from murdering her friend with a curse but helps in no way whatsoever, although he is useful to explain the things we don't know about the world of The book (I liked that, because usually in this kind of books the protagonist is learning this stuff and is the naive one, and its refreshing for this book since she is the one who is really knowledgeable)

Morgan meets James a Dragon who's supposed to be extinct and help her take down the Dragon that went wild and killed her friend. He is a really hot guy and suddenly she trusts him although he made her reveal all her secrets and dark memories to him without her permission. This bothered me endlessly because I understood she needed help, but she trust him way too much for a guy that did that the moment they met and she knows nothing about him in return. She starts liking him but he hasn't done anything worth this, except for this little sacrifice he make at almost the end of the book where he saves her from being hunted by the law and transforms into a Dragon even when he said he wouldn't do it because he is hiding.

She, Alec, a siren and a fae help her until she realizes the fae is the one responsible for people thinking she killed her friend and released a Dragon. She realizes the police and hunters are corrupt because they know she Is innocent and still are following her, so she makes her proof public by going to the news. She ends up pardoned but the fae escapes and that's it.

The book had its moments but it needed more ways to connect with the reader and the protagonist since it ended presenting a lot of characters that didn't really connect in any emotional way, so I wouldn't really care if James, Alec, the siren, the Oracle or the fae were bad o would die.

Another great start to what will undoubtedly become another good series by Dyan Chick. Morgan Drake is a fun character caught between a lifestyle she has always known and a new life with new powers she doesn't know what to do with; which is a common theme throughout Ms. Chick's books.

The first part of the story establishing Morgan’s current “normal” life was fun to read, especially with my personal passion for antiques, and it built a good base for the reader to stay right with Morgan as she starts to meet new personalities and learn more about herself, even if by accident sometimes. I really loved the characters of James and Dima because of their distinct mannerisms and the twists and turns they helped add to the storyline.

There was also some good detail in some of the scenery descriptions which helped the world and action take on a more real feel. This is one part of Ms. Chick's writing that has shown some growth and I hope it continues, as it enables the reader, and myself in particular, to become more engrossed in the lives of the characters. The more detailed the surroundings and the characters’ backgrounds are, the more it draws me in. Great work again Ms. Chick and as always I am looking forward to the next arrival.

In full disclosure, I received an ARC of this book in exchange for my honest review

Uncaged Review: Magic Born is a fast paced urban fantasy that hits the ground running – I was yanked into the story within a few pages and the story never let up. Morgan is a mage, who travels between the magical realm and the human one, smuggling magical objects to sell for a living. Her main boss, and mentor, is a powerful crime lord and centuries old vampire – Jimmy. When Morgan brings him a cursed statue she found at an estate sale, she is well rewarded – and since it’s her birthday, Jimmy tells her to go out on the town on him, and show around his newest employee, and young vamp, Alec.
Things take a turn while Morgan and Alec are at the club, a dragon is loose and burning the city. When she finds out that Jimmy is dead, and she’s set up, she has 48 hours to clear her name.
There are plenty of twists and turns and betrayals – and the author keeps you second guessing yourself and the characters on every other page. The banter, the characters and the action sequences are well paced and keeps the reader engaged. I read this in one sitting, and am looking forward to book two that is coming out in April. Even though this tied up the story arc that was running, it did leave you hanging a bit on others at the end.

(FYI I tend to only review one book per series, unless I completely change my mind on a series, so want to change my scoring.)

The title is a dead giveaway as to part of the plot. -- It was also a bit obvious in some places, but I liked it.

First time read the author's work?: Yes

Will you be reading more?: Yes

Would you recommend?: Yes

------------
How I rate Stars: 5* = I loved (must read all I can find by the author)
4* = I really enjoyed (got to read all the series and try other books by the author).
3* = I enjoyed (I will continue to read the series)
or
3* = Good book just not my thing (I realised I don't like the genre or picked up a kids book to review in error.)

All of the above scores means I would recommend them!
-
2* = it was okay (I might give the next book in the series a try, to see if that was better IMHO.)
1* = Disliked

Note: adding these basic 'reviews' after finding out that some people see the stars differently than I do - hoping this clarifies how I feel about the book. :-)

Great Fun

I almost got dizzy reading this book and i mean a good dizzy. im not sure I've ever read a book where so much happened so fast and still held together.
The book opens with a natural born mage who hunts magical artifacts for a living and quickly moves to a centuries old vampire, then a newly turned vampire, a siren, a wild dragon, a man dragon (or dragon man), hunters (magic canceling vicious bounty hunters), a Fae, back to the siren and just turned vampire, to a set of human appearing and acting reporters and a Sprite Chief of Police.
Whew!
Lol.
Now I'm going to get the second book.
Oh yeah. No misspelled words, no dangling participles or misplaced modifiers. Wahoo!!!

Five Stars!!!

A well written book with good character and world building, set in a unique paranormal world, a supposedly average female mage m.c. thrown into a chaotic situation, and the hint of romance in the horizon. I found Magic Born at a time when I was lost, and parched. Desparatly searching in vain for my next series to love. Thank you Dyan Chick you ended my search. I only wish was the book was longer. I didn't want it to end.

Creative and imaginative. You can't help but be amused by the characters and at times laugh out loud. Morgan always believe she was a mage, until the night her friend and boss is killed. It takes a mage, a siren, a vampire and a dragon to uncover the truth. It takes a news crew to expose the truth to the public and a police commissioner to step up and do the right thing. I can see this becoming a popular series with people who enjoy paranormal mysteries.

OK but some editing issue

Good mystery story. But the protagonists reactions to things were a bit off.. E. G. Being drugged and truth serumed and still finding the person who did it attractive. There were multiple editing errors where you had to guess a word and the last page or few sentences seemed to be missing. There are better books that are easier to read.

Awesome. Mages and sirens, vampires and dragons. Oh my. I liked the gritty heroine, her best frenemy, the newbie vamp, and the hot dragon dude. OMG, the fae? Can't tell ya because that would be a spoiler, but read it and you'll see. Loads of feisty fun for urban fantasy fans and a little bit for lovers of paranormal romance, too. Good stuff here, guys.

Magical beings

Magical beings are just my cup of tea or rather go with it. Deceit and mayhem are just the beginning of this wild ride. So grab something to drink, settle in and let this author whisk you away for one wild ride. Oh and maybe there is a really handsome Dragon flying around too.

Wonderful story. Fantastic main character, Morgan. Plenty of action, intrigue, sorrow, and loss. Lots of room for a backstory and future tales to which I look forward.
